Ok looks like 200 dpi works
With my time not being my own all too often yesterday and most of today did not work out as planned, thankfully nothing "bad". Cool I see the pic at my account and the show page. I only submitted from the original window twice. The first failed on your side at 300 dpi and the 2nd at 200 dpi went through. I did not hit submit on the 2nd test window I had open after the first failure. Aye, don't know what all yet but do know 300 dpi is a no go and 600x400 is the max. I will post here again when I try another one, only submit one at a time and wait for confirmation of failure or success before submitting another one. I won't go crazy I'll just try testing with a few that I want to upload anyway. Time to head home and write my story for the show 20 years ago today. A whole bunch, as opposed to ½ a bunch :P, of firsts for me that nite.

M'kay, I went like I was going to upload something new from the start in a new tab and @ 200, just like the 1st @ 300, I did not see anything other than the scaled 150px × 88px above the browse field when I would click on preview. Then I tried 150, 100, 72 dpi and each time I did not see the image when I previewed. I left the first tab open after hitting submit just in case and used another tab to go to my account page and it still showed, "No photos uploaded yet for this member (yet)." So I went back to the tab I left open after submitting, clicked on edit, browsed to a 200 dpi version, same size of 600x350, uploaded, hit preview and I see it. I did not see it originally after hitting submit and thought that might be due due to waiting for it to be approved but apparently not. I tried to upload other versions and it kept reverting back to the 200 dpi each time I hit preview. I don't recall hitting submit again, a 2nd time (1st w/200 dpi) after the 300. Perhaps it took what it liked and for me to try and change it again I have to click on submit??? I tried to change it again and paying a little more attention I see it listing both files with delete checked next to the first one after clicking on preview. Unlike initially browsing for files once submit is hit the page has view and edit at the top and it appears it will not change the upload until submit it hit again. Maybe I did hit submit after initially hitting the upload button with the 200 dpi version. Doing too many thing can cause this confusion, lol. Well it is getting kinda late here and I'm not really where I should be at this time so I think I'll leave things where they're at for now as to not mess up the system too much, lol, and come back to this tomorrow. If I have to redo what I tried to upload today no biggie but I'm thinking where I left it is ok since resubmitting replaces the current image, we'll see tomorrow. I am game for trying it with a test file that can be nuked to determine what is the max dpi the system will accept as long as you are willing. Sometimes outside testing is better but I don't want to disturb or take up too much of your time Mary. I am guessing from your last comment you'd like to know too. It's got me a little curious at this point, a bit confused with trying too many things and it might be best to try from the start fresh(er) tomorrow.

OK 300 dpi is no good and I still am not remembering anything from that one info page, lol. It could have been something "hidden" and outdated I found. I'll try again at 200 since I am into figuring & testing these kinds of things then we'll know.

When I clicked on upload for the pic @ 683x400 300dpi I got a message at the top, "The image was resized to fit within the maximum allowed resolution of 600x400 pixels". So me being me I had to mess around a lil more, :) Now I know the max res for sure, most likely max file size (a 1.2 meg .jpg or .gif would be very high dpi but not so much for a .png file) and well dunno about max dpi as of yet. If the software does not choke then we know it will take 300 dpi. Perhaps that 1000(?) I saw on the elusive info page is for dpi not res???I finally hit submit a few minutes ago.

uploading 300 dpi is a waste because the Web can only display 72 dpi and the software is almost certain to choke on the hi-res, but whatever.

    RE: Submitting a Fan Photo
Looking to upload via the Submit content under user name on the left, which I have not tried to do yet, not post in a message. Dunno if there is any difference but I could see allowing less in a regular forum post as opposed to a "gallery". On the first page of the Community link at the top left I found, "File size limit is 1.2m. (Photo may take between 1-12hrs to appear on the site.)" At the Submit Fan Photo page it shouts (LOL), "ALL PHOTOS ARE SUBJECT TO APPROVAL AND WILL NOT BE "LIVE" IMMEDIATELY. IT CAN TAKE BETWEEN 1-24 HOURS TO APPEAR." so I figured a human inspects each one for several reasons. Also on the Submit Fan Photo page it has, "Upload your JPG, GIF, or PNG file here!" underneath the field with the browse button. I could see not wanting any uncompressed .tif or .tga files. Yeah I agree jpegs are the best for all around usage. I did some image info viewing from the Community link>Fan Photos. I sampled from Tickets, Concert and Festivals. I tried some I thought might be older and recent uploads. One labeled Further Tour 2010 has to be pretty recent, right? :) All the ones I checked were 400 pixels high, varying widths (600, 533, 419, 181, ...) and 300 dpi when saved and opened in a simple photo program. I wonder if there is an automated process before or after approval to make them all 400 pixels high? There was some other location I found max file and pixel size along with lots of other kinds of info, hence why I thought I could find it fairly easily again, but it was after continuously surfing the site for an hour or 3 so info retention was certainly diminished. I don't recall anything about file part but I want to say I saw a little over 1000 pixels as the max for one of the dimensions. I scanned it in at 300 dpi, will leave it at that, resize it down to 400 pixels high from 586 and it is only 68 KB so that should not be a problem. I'll give it a go here shortly and we shall see what happens.

Well, the short version is that at the moment you can't, because we turned off that function because it was creating some really bizarre side effects. I'd suggest doing what they do on Freecycle (and if you don't know about Freecycle, it's the best!), and just make a new post that the tapes are taken. I could go back and manually delete it if you're still getting deluged with hopeful emails, though. Just lemme know. This does point to an interesting problem; if I delete it it might throw off subsequent conversation, and if I don't delete it somebody comes along six months from now and in a wild burst of optimism thinks the tapes are still there... Hm.

Being able to edit our own posts would be the best solution, IMO. Maybe it does the same thing as what marye is describing but most web boards I frequent are able to allow that feature without any problems. The Dude Abides!

that feature was turned on. Unfortunately it seems inextricably linked to the surrealism problem, i.e. posts suddenly appearing wildly out of order. You know, three answers, an unrelated post, and then the original question. If we can get that pesky little issue solved I think it would be great to restore the feature, though. I'll mention it to the intrepid techs.

for the moment, you might want to try the In Search Of topic, which is a bit more generic than a matchmaking topic but couldn't hurt. Meanwhile, Iz and I will brainstorm on this.

Hey all you sweet people! Im not sure if this is the right space to post a question of this sort but anywho. My name is Amy, and I have been a long time grateful dead fan, as well as a long time early childhood educator. Having started a family of our own recetly, my husband & I have decided to start a childcare center of our own. I struggled for a while about what to call it, and finally decided on The Dancing Bear Childcare Center. Id love to be able to use the GD dancing bear logo for our center, but Im not sure who to contact and how to go about doing this? I thought you might have some info. regarding this, and would be so grateful for any info. your willing to share! Thanks so much & I look forward to hearing from you! Amy Jane

First off, Amy --I salute you on your choice of a professional path. I come from a line of teachers myself and hold them in the highest of regard, especially those involved in the education of the little ones. It's truly possible to save lives by getting them steered in a positive direction as soon as it can be done, so major thumbs up to you. Regarding the naming thing, I would guess that you can, with a few obvious exceptions, call your business whatever you'd like (but of course I doubt that you'd see, for instance, an unlicensed Grateful Dead Auto Parts or a Terrapin Station Petting Zoo getting away with it for very long). I mean, upon whose intellectual property rights does the mere name "Dancing Bear" infringe? As to logos, we're probably singing a different tune. If I started up a national chain of soda/ice cream parlors, there's probably not a lot that the Coca-Cola Company could do about me naming my shops "The Real Thing" --but I daresay they'd balk at my incorporating the duly trademarked Coke "ribbon" as part of my company logo, whether or not I asked in advance for their permission to use it. It's just good corporate CYA practice. Suppose I had tainted product in my shops that was making people sick, and that it became a big local and national cable news story, replete with film crews and reporters parked outside of my storefronts --Coke's image would be damaged by association, and wrongly so, which is why they would have their lawyers fire off a cease-and-desist order within minutes of getting wind of what I was up to and why they'd never grant a request for permission if I bothered to ask in the first place. It's in that vein, but I wish you the best of luck and salute you for doing as many others would not by asking for permission in advance.

I can't remember exactly, but in Fayetteville, North Carolina (home of the 8nd Airborne Division) there was an auto painting (I think!) shop that had a dancing bear as its streetward sign.

Hey Amy,you have to check whether the image itself is trademarked. If it is not, then you can use it as is. If it SHOULD be trademarked, then change the image somewhat on your logo, and have someone paint your logo freehand ie: give the bear a bigger belly, have it doing a cartwheel, add a ball or some child's toy, a trumpet, put a hat or even shoes on the bear...you get the idea. and then it is your own original image (I think anyhow, can research this further though, just to be sure that I am not telling you crap)

The first one was on Steal Your Face, but there are other better versions. I always loved this song as I have spent lots of time on and around the Mississippi River. I like how the song travels down the river as have I. But Bobby never sings the verse about "cavortin in Davenport", too bad. Written by the great Johnny Cash. Do I contradict myself? Did they just remove the 8/20 "Taper's Section" with all of the reaction and commentary/criticism from the site? So now its "The Grateful Dead, Inc." censoring Dead Heads? How Pathetic! This site has nothing to do with the freedom, joy and honest commerce that was once the Grateful Dead! Dr. Funky

I have two photos of the Dead performing from the seventies. I have had them a long time, so long in fact that I'm not entirely sure who gave them to me, or if that person was the same person who actually did the photographing. Can I post them without needing to be concerned about any of these issues, given copyright law, etc. etc.?

"I heard my dream went back downstream, cavortin" in Davenport." Is that the line you are talking about Hal? I haven't noticed Bobby not singing this line. He may have missed it a few times, but I believe he hit it more often than not. Am I missing something? BTW, DeadBase shows this song appearing in 397 shows. Peace, Richard

Richard, you are right. Tonight has been Big River Night at this household. Bobby sang "I heard my dream went back downstream, cavortin" in Davenport." in every version I listened to. I think I have to eat crow, Texas crow that is. I was probably singing that verse so loud that I never heard Bobby sing it. And I'm pretty attached to it because I did my fair share of cavortin in Davenport. Glad you are still on the site. I loved that Bobby and Jerry were always bringing classics like this out (most of them). Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) Hey Hal,Sounds like great way to spend an evening. Big River is a really cool song which often inspired both Bobby and Jerry to some smokin' guitarwork. I once made a CD of nothing but NFA from different shows. It was a lot of fun to listen to. I may do that again, with Big River. Yahoo! Peace, Richard

I think you've solved the problem, yes? You seem to be posting to forums just fine. Now if you've encountered the message that says you can't start forum topics, yes, that's true. Call it chaos management. this may be in the wrong section, but my idea, though it would make the opening screen for the forums really long, I realixe... but is there any chance ALL of the topics could be visible on one screen? kind of like The Scene area, which has most of the sub-sections listed. it would help me find stuff, since I can't remember where all of the different topics are, or where they are buriried.

I agree with your idea but don't know if it's possible. It might work better to have it as a link rather than an opening screen (i.e., Click Here for a list of all topics); that way only the people who wanted it would have it in their face. I'll pass this along and see what happens. Thanks!
