First Dead show
This was the Deads first concert in Cleveland and my first Dead show. They opened the show with Casey Jones.
We had very good seats center stage twentysome rows back, $3.50 I think or $5.50 at the door. We were dancing in the isle by the second song.
They played most of Workingmans Dead. Almost all of Live Dead; Dark Star, St. Stevens, The Eleven. And some of American Beauty.
Pigpen was unbelievable, when I think of him I see him as the TRUTH.
Butane balls of fire rolling across the Music Halls ceiling and an explosives canister. Pigpen lit it off and caught Hart by surprise....almost nocked him over.
They kept playing and playing, they were hot and having a very good night. I dont think the officials in Cleveland knew quite what to do with them. They wanted the show to be over and the Dead wouldnt stop playing. Up came the house lights, they still wouldnt stop. Then a couple of cops, the fire marshal and a couple of suits stood on stage in a line, most with their arms crossed staring. The Dead kept playing for another ten, fifteen minutes. I believe if they hadnt been forced to stop they would have gone on for hours.
What a first Dead concert, I still believe it was the best I ever saw.
it too was my first concert
it too was my first concert as well as my first Dead show. My girlfriend had a midnite curfew, the show ended around 12:30. I will dispute New Riders on the bill. What i really liked were the drummers center stage and all the percussions stage left. if i recall, there were about 3 drum solos throughout the show.

A recording of this show has surfaced. The setlist contains Dark Star> St. Stephen> Not Fade Away> GDTRFB> Not Fade Away> Turn On Your Lovelight. Unfortuntately a large chunk of "Lovelight" (The entire second verse) and a bit of "Dark Star" is missing due to tape flips.
