Finally listened to the scarlet>fire download that came with the purchase. It sounds amazing and i'm so excited for the full release. One very pleasant surprise...on the tape i had all these years, there is a woman in the crowd who quickly screams for a sec just as Jerry finishes the line: As i picked up my matches, and was closing the door (1:41 mark). I'm happy to say that this mystery woman's scream of delight was not cleaned up or edited out of the official release. It's the little things...

We need more Brent shows

I'm ecstatic about the early May 77 box set and placed my order before they broke the internet the other day, but what I really yearn for these days are more releases with Brent and Jerry with his newly defined sound in the early 90s. I hope Dave finds a nice gem to release for DP 24 or beyond.

Non-Dead Betty's, Live 'Blows Against the Empire'

mbarilla, ah, maybe it is 2/27 and not 5/4 as I feared (as the other missing show). In addition to the exciting Dead release possibilities this opens (the BCT 72 run!, Swing!, 10/29/77!) and on and on, does anyone know if the returned Betty's include non-Dead stuff? There's some mouthwatering JG shows with Nicky Hopkins that would be sweet. And some really odd stuff which I'd love to hear - this one jumped out at me: Jefferson Starship 11.24.74 Winterland, whole show (with entire Blows Against the Empire suite) Hell yeah to that one...

Is an HDCD deck worth it for these?

Has anyone here done A/B tests of Dead HDCDs between decks that decode HDCD and decks that just play them as CDs? I'm pretty happy playing Dead HDCDs on a Onkyo C-7030 deck, but it doesn't claim to know anything about HDCD decoding. The decks that do claim to do HDCD, by the likes of Oppo and Emotiva, are priced at $500 and up. From reading up on it, HDCD provides a menu of options for the sound engineer, not all of which are always used. Seems like the main loss in playing them as CDs would be in flattened peaks. And that they should have increased resolution in quieter passages no matter what they're played on. The Dead have a lot of quieter passages, and they do sound good on my current system. On the loud passages, am I missing something? I generally hate the compression of, say FM radio, but I'm not feeling like the reported compression artifact of playing HDCD as CD is in that range of obvious annoyance. Still, would the sound just open up in an obvious way with the right deck?

Mr. Jack Straw, 30 trips selections

for some years they went with the A plus banger, for others they went with B+ bangers, there was a strategy with all factors considered. Song selection was a major, as well as performance. SQ took third. And taking into account what they wanted to do with other series/box sets was major in selection process. One example is 1977, 4.25.77 or 5.26.77 ? could have went with either, but I was always under the impression 5.26.77 will be selected as a stand alone release. Both excellent shows but is either A+ ? Example from 1967, 11.10.67 or 10.22.67 ? both killer but i am under the impression the 10.22.67 will be released as studio remaster bonus disc, similar to new ly released 7.29.66 with GD debut album. Its only one disc compared to the two from 11.10.67. No doubt that 11.10.67 is one of the finest to be ever released and near the top of 30 trips selections with all factors considered for 70's shows they could have filled the set with all A+ bangers and used some of these betty boards. I am pretty sure they have had access to these for a good amount of time, like before even before May 2015. I also mentioned recently that the 2016 Dave's Picks selections could have been in the 30 trips - 1974, 1976, 1970, 1981 other selection factor, some shows build off each other because of song selection. "Viola Lee Blues" is the first example 1966-67, but it really picks up in the 80's some of these similarities were stand out moments from each show, but its really all good to me 80-81 "Feel Like A Stranger" 81-82 "Truckin" 82-83 "Scarlet Fire" "UJB" 83-84 "Playin"->"UJB" 84-85 Couldnt really find much similarity with the shows 85-86 "They Love Each Other" 86-87 "They Love Each Other" "Man Smart Woman Smarter" 87-88 "Hell in a Bucket"-> "Sugaree" "Walkin Blues" "Bird Song" "Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad" to be fair a lot of the shows from the 70's had just as many SQ issues as 80's , the big difference and reason 70s era does not stick out like sore thumb in some of the cases is the method and materials to how they were recorded. I said at the time if some of these were stand alone releases no matter which year or era, some fans would be complaining, because they have cuts, patches, dropouts, but since it was lumped together its almost an afterthought for some shows. But the 80s shows took a lot of the hits , as usual also some of these shows would not have been released in my opinion without this 30 show set. And I am not strictly talking about 80s / 90s either way Rhinos keep the Grateful Dead releases coming, I can find something to like from any show

Why 15,000

hey Mr7171551, I hear ya about getting older. If they release these for 20 years (I sure hope physical media will still be around that long), I'll be 67 when they're done. And then lots to listen to in retirement :) As for why only 15,000 copies - my 2 cents is that it makes perfect sense. It's fairly hardcore Deadheads who want the other three shows in the box, even though I think most of us agree they're all on par with Cornell (and my favorite of all four shows is actually 5/9/77 not least because of that Help>Slip>Franklin's). Anyway, the 50,000 worldwide will be true for Cornell because, right or wrong, even casual fans, not to mention fans of "jambands" - have heard of Cornell. Not so much New Haven, alas. Having said that, I surely was alarmed that the box could sell out before I got my order past the electronic bugbears. PS - Keithfan, I like "May 1977 TOO (The Old One)" - nice.

Future releases

Well, now I just need to stay alive for the next,how did Dave put it?-5/10/20 years!!!! Ha, bloody, Ha. Need to move those Betty boards a bit faster before us older Deadheads just up and become members of The Grateful Dead ourselves. Just saying.P.s the Berkeley Theater 1972 box set- Can I pre-order it now? I'm getting too old for another Thursday debacle. I live in the UK and ended up getting up at 5am Friday(our time) to try and complete the bloody order. Now that Warner Elektra are taking my money, you'd a thought a big company like that would have been able to handle the release. Also, why limit the box set to 15,000? I'm certain you could easily sell 50,000 around the world.

Box Sets

Yeah, good point Mr. Jack Straw, about the Bettys. Did they ever say how many shows were recovered? I'm with you guys on the box sets - it's not so much that I care if they release 80s, I just don't want it to be at the expense of having to wait for the good stuff, like the '76 tapes, Port Chester, Fillmore East, Summer / Fall '72, mid-1973, Winterland '74, etc. But I don't believe Rhino is about to go experimenting at this point. I think they released the runs of 80s / 90s shows they thought were marketable, and are focused on the best stuff left in the Vault now. If there were to be a later era box, I think the Vince years are preferable, with no MIDI, if that was even going on during his tenure. I just dig his keyboard style more, and I'm back into enjoying the harmony vocals again. Syracuse 78 - lol, you said it man, exactly what I was thinking when I had my own ordering issues - when have they ever handled volume well. And part of it, no doubt, is what someone else mentioned already - the problem was exacerbated by all of the double / triple / quadruple clicking. Well at least it was cleared up and everyone who wants one can get one.

Dave's Picks 22 roll out

I'm guessing the DaP 22 will be introduced sometime during the week of the 17th or the following Monday the 24th, or maybe Thursday April 20th (4/20). Pre-orders will start shipping on Friday the 28th. More than likely, we'll get emails for shipping of the limited and early orders of all-music editions of Get Shown The Light on Monday, May 1 thru Thurs May 4th.

I was lurking when Dave's 21 came out but was puzzled by my subscription copy when it came.Knowing it's Rhino or whoever did the distribution, which was timely and early so it probably wasn't Rhino, this might not hold true, but you would think they would take care of the subscriptions before the sales of the leftovers. This would leave the high numbers as the leftovers to know how many to sell before they sell out. With that in mind i was surprised when i got 16004/16500 that's less than 500 copies available for day of sale. Of course this is Rhino so they might use a random approach to the numbers or start at the back and work forward to keep the low numbers for ebay sellers ;) Did anyone get a copy on the announce date that didn't subscribe with a number lower than 16004?

Their distribution models remains opaque. Maybe random packing of the pallets at the manufacturing plant so when they get to the distribution center the boxes are jumbled to avoid the warehouse people being bribed for the low numbers. Everyone knows the lower the number the better they sound.

My numbers have been all over the place since Dave's Picks #1, and I have always subscribed pretty much right away. My guess is the CDs arrive on a big palate and they start shipping orders regardless of numbers from the first digipack off the stack.

Low numbers

The original Fillmore West 1969 box, #1791 which i can read through the shrinkwrap meaning i never had to opened it, was the last one i felt wasn't a random process when the number really should be based on ordering order. That 16004/16500 Pick was the highest number i ever got, so far, makes me feel like a Jerry come lately or even worse, an ebay buyer ;)

Numbers

My subscription DaP20 12-9-81 was in the 16000's. I also ordered 2 more to give as Christmas gifts and did not get sequential numbers even though they shipped together. One was in the 7000's and the other in the 8000's, which a lot lower than my subscription.So consider this: the number is printed on the container, not the CD. During the CD production run the first one to be pressed goes on the bottom of the stack, and the last is at the top. If they start putting discs into the cases and start with the top of the stack of CDs (the last one pressed) and put it into the 000001 CD case, then the first pressed CD would be in case #16500. Actually, I think it's fairly random with a few special people possibly getting desirable numbers, and the rest of us getting random numbers. But which number is desirable?

4 Weeks

Til the boxes supposedly arrive, getting very very excited. Part of me is hoping for an uboxing video, the other half is thinking to wait til its in hand and have it be a surprise.

That would be so cool, but wouldn't that really cheese off the people that got denied on this box and now have the mysterious Music Only version as their only option? I think this page is now dead and all the official action will be on the Music Only page. According to the banner there's still less than 500 copies left and it's been sold out since a couple days after the preorder.

funny you should ask ;) Looks like a slow night here at the kiddies table. LMA is just so cool it NEVER ceases to amaze me. For the past 10 years, when i go to clubs shows and meet the "vintage" bands, i always lobby for LMA and tell them to check out the GD section and they could have the same thing because it's filled by the rabid fans and the tapers themselves, all they have to do is approve being on there, the rest is automatic. a couple of bands that have shown up eventually are Butt Hole Surfers, Meat Puppets and i'm still working on Mission of Burma ;) Just taking a stroll through the Pups section, which is getting more robust each time i check, i see this gem from the original drummer who no longer tours but runs their archives. Meat Puppets Live at Highlights Of 1985 on 1985-01-01 Uploaded by Derrick Bostrom on 10/22/2015 Its a 41 track best of 1985 that you can download in lossless flac, it's sick. Unboxing video?

Just a picture of all the contents, very similar to the first May 1977 box with the discs laid out and the booklet, only this new Get Shown The Light will have a book and booklet. The book being the Peter Conners about 5/8/77 and the booklet with Nick Meriwether's essay and the music credits and legals. Reproductions of tickets to all 4 shows. Dimensions: 6"w x 7 3/4"h x 2"d same as original May 77 box from 2013.

Sticking it to 'em

After the total meltdown and quick abandonment of this page to the All Music page i think it's unlikely we'll get anymore here. It is sold out, why waste any further effort on it, the All Music is the one they are pushing now, the unlimited, folio packaged one. I suspect we see more on the folio version before we get more on this one. Maybe after it ships, but until then there is no reason to do anything and remind people of preorder day or payment cancellations. Though Dr Rhino seems to really get off on the unboxing videos, i like the white gloves he uses.

You know who has CD set #1 of every Dave's Picks?

Dave Europe 72 is so good, probably the best. I wish there was some 1973 that sounded as good. The Winterland Box set is probably as close as it gets.

To make up for the Let Me Sing

Just me and the crickets here tonight.Working my way through 1970 it really makes one appreciate the foresight of Bear in recording and keeping all the tapes of the shows he was doing. Spring 1970 he's off the tour, after the January New Orleans Bust described in Truckin and the virtual vault goes SBD vacant, with AUDs now serving as place holders and reference points in the year. This is the part of the real Vault i would be interested in asking Dave about, 1970. With the return of the Betty's it gets easier to plot future releases for the 1971-79 years, but 1970 is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle that holds the most promise for unknown goodies to be found next. They go from Ballrooms and Festivals in 1969 to college Gyms and auditoriums, the tapes are primitive, the decks had auto level and was in the time before tapers knew that when they were chatting it was being recorded too. Tomorrow morning will be back to working on the AUDs with this classic AUD recording that was a mainstay of cassette trading in the 70's in much worse sound. i'll skip the NRPS, but you don't have to. I will relish the NRPS with Jerry on pedal steel, he was much too hard on himself, questioning his proficiency and claiming he needed to practice too much to be good...his pedal playing with the Riders and early 70's Dead was extraordinary...Bobby couldn't play slide for shit, but he did...and the world is a better place for it as well as Jerry's pedal steel...

Can't believe this thread is still going. I can never seem to find it from the regular website as they are obviously pushing only the All music edition. But today I received the almanac email and bang there is a link to this thread. Kayak guy thanks so much for that Meat Puppets link. Wow that band knocked me off my ass when I was 17. Was at a lower east side NYC club called the World when I figured I would check out the second floor of this club. I hear a 3 piece rock band performing for roughly 30 people. There were several hundred on the lower level drinking and dancing to a DJ playing bad 80's dance music. The Meat Puppets were punk rocking their way through some classic rock covers and playing many of their own repertoire. All I really knew was classic rock. These guys were young and fierce. It was musically speaking a life changing moment for me at the time. Even at 17 I was sick of FM radio playing the same 60's and 70's songs over and over. I thought rock was dead or at least simply coasting along. After that show I went out and bought the MP's current EP release Out My Way and MP 2. Then I picked up the obviously GD inspired Up On The Sun and immediately knew these guys were crazy talented and inspired by all the greats before them. Then of course I heard the Replacements and others in the underground scene. A few years later we had the last great rock music era courtesy of Nirvana and other great indie acts. So discovering the Meat Puppets and the Grateful Dead a year earlier restored my faith in rock. The 80's was the era of drum machines and synths but there were still a few bands playing real music. You just had to poke around to find them. Thanks for letting me vent all that out though I probably won't be able to find this thread again. Really psyched to get this box in a few weeks. Happy Passover to everyone. I remember back in the day it always coincided with Spring east coast tours. Mom I really need to miss the Seder. Why? I need to be at Nassau Coliseum or further out in Worcester Mass to see the Grateful Dead.

Are currently on tour and why i was thinking about them.I've lobbied them enough over the years they now recognize me at the shows and i don't want to be a band stalker, so i now wait to let them talk to me if they want. very cool people and being smokers they have to use the same smoking area as the fans, so they are used to requests for signatures and having to chat with the fans. Starless box is also cool, Road to Red i like slightly better when they were working out the jam that became Asbury Park on the USA album. gREAT News MR PEte! DEAD.NET CAME THRU FOR ME!

I got an email earlier this week from dead.net saying that recently a single copy became available for me to order (since I got screwed on the original order snafu and missed the lim. edition by an hour!) I must have been the first to get a 'number' when they sent an email back in Feb that said they would let me know if any popped up, I did not believe them, replied w/ an email begging them for 1 copy and explaining how many times I tried to order and got kicked out of the shopping cart (5x)... My mistake for not calling it in earlier, but now I CAN share their laughter! Yesterday they sent me a 1 time link to order it!I ACTUALLY WILL GET A COPY! Someone must have backed out or their card was bad or something.... Whew, close one! however, I think there should be a limit amount per buyer, 3 copies per order and also they could do a thin g like ... "for 1st 48 hrs. you can only order one copy" and then they could open the flood gates after all hard core heads have had a chance to get their single copy.

Kayak Guy - Coasting

I think they really started coasting after 68, happy to rest on their laurels and really were do you go from up? Agreed, Barton Hall Box does roll off the tongue easier! I like that Barton Hall T-Shirt, hope they get more in. Footnote, just got tixs for Tedeschi Trucks Band in September, Dallas Texas, Fair Park. Great seats, not cheap (100 a pop), but she does have a huge band to pay. Luckily my wife can afford it :-)

Has anyone gotten one? I was pleasantly surprised to get Dave's 22 on Saturday after the tracking info told me it wouldn't arrive until tomorrow. With all the ordering problems, I want to make sure my order was processed correctly and that I'll be enjoying some May 77 this weekend.
