If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

Despite my stance on the Eras Conflict, I would love the next 3 boxes to be Cap Theatre 71, BCT 72, and Boston & NYC 76, with 5/26/73 (a 4disc show) getting a stand-alone release in 2017 or 2018, and 2/26/77, 11/6/77, and 4/22/79 appearing in the Dave's series before 2020. And that is just the Betty's I am familiar enough with to know I love them. ForensicDoc: you're description of '71 Dead's good points was perfect!

I was so glad Dave released the May '77 set a few years ago because I was at the 5/13/77 show at the Auditorium Theatre, Chicago - 5 days after the infamous Cornell show. It is still my favorite show out of all the times and years that I saw the Dead. So glad to get some more from the previous shows, it will be a nice addition to the 1st set, and I love the double stealies lol. Betty Boards are awesome as evident by the July '78 renderings last year and of course all the years of actually trading and listening to them so many moons ago. This is so great. Love the Dave's Pick's series and can't wait for this set. Helps us keep Truckin' every day! By the way, someone was asking about HDCD and if it's worth it or not. Believe it or not, Windows Media Player decodes HDCD because Microsoft bought the technology. So make as good a connection as you can from your computer to your audio system and you might be able to compare the results from your current CD player. Hope that helps. Be Kind

I had a second listen to DaP 18 over the last few nights. It kinda grows on me. Lots of slower versions of songs. When I saw them several nights during this run, one big impression I had was "They are so low key. What happened to the band I saw before the break?" I think Suguree on is excellent playing, and the second set Comes a Time medley is pretty killer, if you get used to the mellow groove. the filler from 7/16 is excellent too, especially the Music Never> Scarlet. I think they were finding their way after time off, and figuring out how to integrate Micky back into the band. Honestly, this is a very different band than most releases, IMHO. I was still in a '76 mood after that, so I put on diP18. Quite a difference a couple months makes! this band is much more centered and assertive. I love that "Orange Tango Jam" they leap into without warning out of the Eyes jam. Did they play that Tango thing very much? Other recent spins: Pure Jerry 1 9/1&2/89 Excellent two shows with different set lists. TTATS 82 and 85 Thanks for the recommendations! DiP18 when I got in a '78 mood I am so psyched for this new box!

Hey there rockers!!!! Well, it's seems the voluminous, glaring/blaring white noise chatter about the release of some possibly overrated mid 70s shows has awakened me from my hibernation........... Good thing, too, since it IS February 18. For those of you who want some Bakersfield with your Berthas, whose guilty pleasures are Bobby's Cowboy country & western tunes, for those who savor the newly minted Hunter/Garcia tunes in their original mid-tempo forms, consider this historic, ground-breaking, mind-boggling run: https://archive.org/details/gd1971-02-18.sbd.miller.111793.flac16/gd71-… http://www.dead.net/features/release-info/finally-three-vault-2-19-71-c… https://archive.org/details/gd1971-02-20.sbd.miller.116617.flac16/gd71-… https://archive.org/details/gd1971-02-21.sbd.miller.116618.flac16/gd71-… https://archive.org/details/gd1971-02-23.sbd.miller.110353.flac16/gd71-… https://archive.org/details/gd1971-02-24.121065.sbd.miller.digitalrbb.f… Clearly an historic run. Prior to the Bettys we had only been exposed to really bad audience recordings of these shows. When we got our copies of the Bettys, it was like dropping acid for the second time. Very very enlightening.......... All are super fine. Many prefer 2/18, although I think it's a little overrated. Wasn't too happy when 2/19 was released, but after repeated serious listenings I had my breakthrough and understood why. 2/20 is very fine and underrated, 2/21 has no big jams but has some really sweet playing, 2/23 is the elephant in the room, by 2/24 they're maybe a bit tired but it's all good. April may be the chocolate, but Port Chester is way buttery.......... In fact, the release of the Bettys was a real windfall for 1971 freaks----it included the entire Port Chester run, two of the Manhattan Center shows, both April Boston shows, and 12/14/71--one of the least talked about classic late 1971 shows. Thank you Betty! Back to hibernation. If anybody needs/wants the Port Chesters, you know where to find me........ Rock on rockers! Doc

I'm guessing the DaP 22 will be introduced sometime during the week of the 17th or the following Monday the 24th, or maybe Thursday April 20th (4/20). Pre-orders will start shipping on Friday the 28th. More than likely, we'll get emails for shipping of the limited and early orders of all-music editions of Get Shown The Light on Monday, May 1 thru Thurs May 4th.

I was lurking when Dave's 21 came out but was puzzled by my subscription copy when it came.Knowing it's Rhino or whoever did the distribution, which was timely and early so it probably wasn't Rhino, this might not hold true, but you would think they would take care of the subscriptions before the sales of the leftovers. This would leave the high numbers as the leftovers to know how many to sell before they sell out. With that in mind i was surprised when i got 16004/16500 that's less than 500 copies available for day of sale. Of course this is Rhino so they might use a random approach to the numbers or start at the back and work forward to keep the low numbers for ebay sellers ;) Did anyone get a copy on the announce date that didn't subscribe with a number lower than 16004?

Their distribution models remains opaque. Maybe random packing of the pallets at the manufacturing plant so when they get to the distribution center the boxes are jumbled to avoid the warehouse people being bribed for the low numbers. Everyone knows the lower the number the better they sound.

My numbers have been all over the place since Dave's Picks #1, and I have always subscribed pretty much right away. My guess is the CDs arrive on a big palate and they start shipping orders regardless of numbers from the first digipack off the stack.

The original Fillmore West 1969 box, #1791 which i can read through the shrinkwrap meaning i never had to opened it, was the last one i felt wasn't a random process when the number really should be based on ordering order. That 16004/16500 Pick was the highest number i ever got, so far, makes me feel like a Jerry come lately or even worse, an ebay buyer ;)

My subscription DaP20 12-9-81 was in the 16000's. I also ordered 2 more to give as Christmas gifts and did not get sequential numbers even though they shipped together. One was in the 7000's and the other in the 8000's, which a lot lower than my subscription. So consider this: the number is printed on the container, not the CD. During the CD production run the first one to be pressed goes on the bottom of the stack, and the last is at the top. If they start putting discs into the cases and start with the top of the stack of CDs (the last one pressed) and put it into the 000001 CD case, then the first pressed CD would be in case #16500. Actually, I think it's fairly random with a few special people possibly getting desirable numbers, and the rest of us getting random numbers. But which number is desirable?

That would be so cool, but wouldn't that really cheese off the people that got denied on this box and now have the mysterious Music Only version as their only option? I think this page is now dead and all the official action will be on the Music Only page. According to the banner there's still less than 500 copies left and it's been sold out since a couple days after the preorder.

funny you should ask ;) Looks like a slow night here at the kiddies table. LMA is just so cool it NEVER ceases to amaze me. For the past 10 years, when i go to clubs shows and meet the "vintage" bands, i always lobby for LMA and tell them to check out the GD section and they could have the same thing because it's filled by the rabid fans and the tapers themselves, all they have to do is approve being on there, the rest is automatic. a couple of bands that have shown up eventually are Butt Hole Surfers, Meat Puppets and i'm still working on Mission of Burma ;) Just taking a stroll through the Pups section, which is getting more robust each time i check, i see this gem from the original drummer who no longer tours but runs their archives. Meat Puppets Live at Highlights Of 1985 on 1985-01-01 Uploaded by Derrick Bostrom on 10/22/2015 Its a 41 track best of 1985 that you can download in lossless flac, it's sick. It doesn't have Franklin's Tower, but it's got everything else. great palette cleanser stuff, lots of fun and part of the 1980's country punk movement that was similar to the spirit of the GD in 1970. try it out its FREE. https://archive.org/details/meatpuppets1985-00-00/03CommunicationBreakd… By the way the new Meat Puppets drummer is the son of Doug Sahm who was the opening act on the "experiment with horns" tour in 1973. This is the night before the experiment began, so no horns here, but it does have Keith singing deep in the 2nd set. Grateful Dead Live at Nassau Coliseum on 1973-09-08 Set 1 Bertha, Me & My Uncle, Sugaree, Beat It On Down The Line, Tennessee Jed, Looks Like Rain, Brown Eyed Women, Jack Straw, Row Jimmy Row, Weather Report Suite Prelude-> Weather Report Suite Part 1-> Let It Grow, Eyes Of The World-> China Doll Set 2 Greatest Story Ever Told, Ramble On Rose, Big River, Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, El Paso, He's Gone-> Truckin'-> Not Fade Away-> Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad-> Not Fade Away, E: Stella Blue-> One More Saturday Night https://archive.org/details/gd1973-09-08.upg-sbd.tobin.126071.flac16/19…

Just a picture of all the contents, very similar to the first May 1977 box with the discs laid out and the booklet, only this new Get Shown The Light will have a book and booklet. The book being the Peter Conners about 5/8/77 and the booklet with Nick Meriwether's essay and the music credits and legals. Reproductions of tickets to all 4 shows. Dimensions: 6"w x 7 3/4"h x 2"d same as original May 77 box from 2013.

After the total meltdown and quick abandonment of this page to the All Music page i think it's unlikely we'll get anymore here. It is sold out, why waste any further effort on it, the All Music is the one they are pushing now, the unlimited, folio packaged one. I suspect we see more on the folio version before we get more on this one. Maybe after it ships, but until then there is no reason to do anything and remind people of preorder day or payment cancellations. Though Dr Rhino seems to really get off on the unboxing videos, i like the white gloves he uses.

Just me and the crickets here tonight.Working my way through 1970 it really makes one appreciate the foresight of Bear in recording and keeping all the tapes of the shows he was doing. Spring 1970 he's off the tour, after the January New Orleans Bust described in Truckin and the virtual vault goes SBD vacant, with AUDs now serving as place holders and reference points in the year. This is the part of the real Vault i would be interested in asking Dave about, 1970. With the return of the Betty's it gets easier to plot future releases for the 1971-79 years, but 1970 is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle that holds the most promise for unknown goodies to be found next. They go from Ballrooms and Festivals in 1969 to college Gyms and auditoriums, the tapes are primitive, the decks had auto level and was in the time before tapers knew that when they were chatting it was being recorded too. Great story about this one. https://archive.org/details/gd70-05-03.aud.goldman-sirmick.20852.sbeok… Rhino has already released most of the prime dates from this period already, from what i can tell. A super duper deluxe Bears Choice/ Dick's Pick 4 box with all of the Fillmore East Feb 70, early and late 11th, 13th & 14th Normanized would be a special pleasure. The June Fillmore West 1970 look ripe for a set and have seen some limited release as bonus material. Tomorrow morning will be back to working on the AUDs with this classic AUD recording that was a mainstay of cassette trading in the 70's in much worse sound. i'll skip the NRPS, but you don't have to. Grateful Dead Live at Capitol Theater on 1970-06-24 Big Railroad Blues, Deep Elem Blues, Friend Of The Devil, Candyman-> Cumberland Blues, Cold Jordan Not Fade Away-> Easy Wind, Dark Star-> Attics Of My Life-> Dark Star-> Sugar Magnolia-> Dark Star-> Saint Stephen-> China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, E: Uncle John's Band https://archive.org/details/gd_nrps70-06-24.aud.pcrp5.23062.sbeok.flacf

I will relish the NRPS with Jerry on pedal steel, he was much too hard on himself, questioning his proficiency and claiming he needed to practice too much to be good...his pedal playing with the Riders and early 70's Dead was extraordinary...Bobby couldn't play slide for shit, but he did...and the world is a better place for it as well as Jerry's pedal steel...

Can't believe this thread is still going. I can never seem to find it from the regular website as they are obviously pushing only the All music edition. But today I received the almanac email and bang there is a link to this thread. Kayak guy thanks so much for that Meat Puppets link. Wow that band knocked me off my ass when I was 17. Was at a lower east side NYC club called the World when I figured I would check out the second floor of this club. I hear a 3 piece rock band performing for roughly 30 people. There were several hundred on the lower level drinking and dancing to a DJ playing bad 80's dance music. The Meat Puppets were punk rocking their way through some classic rock covers and playing many of their own repertoire. All I really knew was classic rock. These guys were young and fierce. It was musically speaking a life changing moment for me at the time. Even at 17 I was sick of FM radio playing the same 60's and 70's songs over and over. I thought rock was dead or at least simply coasting along. After that show I went out and bought the MP's current EP release Out My Way and MP 2. Then I picked up the obviously GD inspired Up On The Sun and immediately knew these guys were crazy talented and inspired by all the greats before them. Then of course I heard the Replacements and others in the underground scene. A few years later we had the last great rock music era courtesy of Nirvana and other great indie acts. So discovering the Meat Puppets and the Grateful Dead a year earlier restored my faith in rock. The 80's was the era of drum machines and synths but there were still a few bands playing real music. You just had to poke around to find them. Thanks for letting me vent all that out though I probably won't be able to find this thread again. Really psyched to get this box in a few weeks. Happy Passover to everyone. I remember back in the day it always coincided with Spring east coast tours. Mom I really need to miss the Seder. Why? I need to be at Nassau Coliseum or further out in Worcester Mass to see the Grateful Dead.

Are currently on tour and why i was thinking about them.I've lobbied them enough over the years they now recognize me at the shows and i don't want to be a band stalker, so i now wait to let them talk to me if they want. very cool people and being smokers they have to use the same smoking area as the fans, so they are used to requests for signatures and having to chat with the fans. Starless box is also cool, Road to Red i like slightly better when they were working out the jam that became Asbury Park on the USA album. Obligatory GD content, this is the best summer SBD i've found searching through summer 1970. I decided to go with both for my virtual box but only linked the CM seed. SBDs are few and very far between, so it's relying on the AUDs for most of the fall. Continuing on my docents tour of the unreleased 1970 Archive we are up to November 1970 for a 4 night run in scenic Port Chester NY, and i've been there to verify at least the Capitol Theater is scenic, once you get inside. Maybe they'll ship it out early!!! Ironic that they put the tease photos on the AME page but not this one. Video in email showing Dr Rhino unveiling getting me very excited. Edit - the picture on the AME is the AME version.

Bring it on. Seriously, I am going to try to revel a bit more in the lead-up. I mean, this has been a lifetime for some people, this thing coming. We're on the cusp of the Great Flood. Of GD. Proper. Just sayin'. All the time, until now, this has been a true inigma. It's so cool we all get to be here as it comes to life, for real. Yes. Sixtus P.S. A worthy one: Ingrid happened upon an unfamiliar GD book as a gift while shopping for some Easter stuff for the kiddos, and now I am realizing it's the one in the unboxing video. Her GD radar was on target. Stay on target. Also...Kayak Guy...love your '70 Virtual Box; I've been following along enough to know that thing's gonna start a grease fire.

I wish they'd offer a discount for the "byte sized" version for those of us already buying the physical medium. Would love to be able to A/B the lossless version compared to the HDCD version of Barton...

We had the red dog Hurley and we adopted another rescue named Girl. We changed her name to Cassidy, but after a day she was renamed to Delilah due to the way she took Hurley's power away... Hurley's got at least ten pounds and a couple of inches over Delilah, but she dominates him anyways...

Does One indulge and create a voluminous comparison-base, and devour 'The Year up 'til May'?Or Does One sit back, relax, but actively avoid The Era of Spring '77, and wait for this to land in All It's Glory. I'm left to ponder among others. Sixtus

You can do the other May 77 box and see how they were really coasting after the shows in the Barton Hall box, which is what Dave call's the new box, and seems like a better name than Get Shown the Light box.

I got an email earlier this week from dead.net saying that recently a single copy became available for me to order (since I got screwed on the original order snafu and missed the lim. edition by an hour!) I must have been the first to get a 'number' when they sent an email back in Feb that said they would let me know if any popped up, I did not believe them, replied w/ an email begging them for 1 copy and explaining how many times I tried to order and got kicked out of the shopping cart (5x)... My mistake for not calling it in earlier, but now I CAN share their laughter! Yesterday they sent me a 1 time link to order it!I ACTUALLY WILL GET A COPY! Someone must have backed out or their card was bad or something.... Whew, close one! however, I think there should be a limit amount per buyer, 3 copies per order and also they could do a thin g like ... "for 1st 48 hrs. you can only order one copy" and then they could open the flood gates after all hard core heads have had a chance to get their single copy.

I think they really started coasting after 68, happy to rest on their laurels and really were do you go from up? Agreed, Barton Hall Box does roll off the tongue easier! I like that Barton Hall T-Shirt, hope they get more in. Footnote, just got tixs for Tedeschi Trucks Band in September, Dallas Texas, Fair Park. Great seats, not cheap (100 a pop), but she does have a huge band to pay. Luckily my wife can afford it :-)

Has anyone gotten one? I was pleasantly surprised to get Dave's 22 on Saturday after the tracking info told me it wouldn't arrive until tomorrow. With all the ordering problems, I want to make sure my order was processed correctly and that I'll be enjoying some May 77 this weekend.

I have delivery notification from UPS and just got an email from UPS My Choice that a package to be delivered has arrived from WEA Distributing.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hi Mr. Guy, you have a package coming. Scheduled Delivery Date: Friday, 05/05/2017 Estimated Delivery Time: 12:45 PM - 04:45 PM wooHoo I think someone on this site mentioned getting the free My Choice service and it's been great for UPS stuff. They email when they get it, they email the day before as a reminder and then email me when it's dropped off.

We can never know about the days to come But we think about them anyway And I wonder if I'm really with you now Or just chasin' after some finer day Anticipation, anticipation Is makin' me late Is keepin' me waitin' And I tell you how easy it feels to be with you And how right your arms feel around me But I, I rehearsed those words just late last night When I was thinkin' about how right tonight might be Anticipation, anticipation Is makin' me late Is keepin' me waitin' And tomorrow we might not be together I'm no prophet and I don't know nature's ways So I'll try and see into your eyes right now And stay right here 'cause these are the good old days And stay right here 'cause these are the good old days (These are the good old days) (These are the good old days) (These are the good old days) (These are the good old days)
