    We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

    The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

    The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

    The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

    Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
    On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
    You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

    To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

    Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
    When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

    More thoughtish things
    For more evidence, think of the songs, the lyrics: from the politics of playing "Okie from Muskogee" and "Mourning Dew" to "Throwing Stones," with the playfully political anti-politics of "Truckin" holding down the fort. My point, though, is that the whole scene, the new way of thinking and living and dwelling and moving and seeing, well, that's fucking politics. If the music is more important than anything else, the music's instantiation--with bodies moving before and well after a show--is nonetheless more important than the music. Politics baby. That means this IS the place where one can make complaints, articulate desires and positions. Complaints, as someone mentioned, are never simple whining; that is reducing a human being to an infant. A complaint should be listened to. I may be quickly ignored, realized to be stupid, or it might be insightful, getting at something, making a point heard in this potentially wonderful political world of the internet (Barlow, anyone, talk about politics and the internet!? ...who tried, however well or poorly, to reimagine a politics otherwise through the potentially non-state regulated polis). My biyearly or so intervention, with its pedantic, hypocritical, arrogant prescriptions.

    Politics and Chimes, first thoughts
    I always have to intervene here. I agree, this is not the best forum to discuss politics, especially in its partisan and policy form. HOWEVER, this is the place where one can and ought happily discuss the politics of the Grateful Dead. They were certainly, absolutely, never "apolitical." Rather, they avoided partisan politics while having many explicit stances (often through benefits, foundations, etc.) on issues that were precisely political. More interesting, though, is that they had an even more interesting politics: a different politics or politics otherwise. This would involve the anarcho-neoliberal/libertarian-communism hybrids that formed on the road, among the audiences, and in the community ethoi, AS WELL AS IN the production, sale, and economic relations with its fans. This was all part of the Grateful Dead, to enact, in life, an other politics, an unknown or new politics, a politics on the margins of politics, ...one which never formed as such, but was and is always being renegotiated, unfolding through and with the world that surrounds it and its own movements. Not talking about Grateful Dead politics is pretending that you can discuss the singer without the song, or the dancer without the dance; it is pretending that the music is just the music, but the music is so much more than the music.

    Most Appealing Show - Can't be sure until I hear them
    ..but I am looking forward to (hopefully) sonic upgrades / shows that previously circulated in less than optimum quality. And the old stuff. What's most interesting to me, at least on paper is the vibrant, lively, dare I say bold choices of some of the newer shows. Cape Cod, both MSG's, Augusta, Miami, .. did I go past one show? ..oops, sorry. These are some hot, late-era shows. Bold picks, DL.

    Can't quit chiming in....
    ....try this. Get a sheet of college ruled paper, sit down, and hand write every show, line by line. I bet by 1983 your hand gets sore. Now, after completion, look at what you scrawled and soak it in. My sheet came two lines short of the bottom. Holy shit...what did we get ourselves into?

    Box is hideously overpriced compared to Europe '72 box, but they have us over a barrel. A show from every year? How cool is that? Hell, man, I even want the 4 disc sampler! Looks like some great shows stuck in there, was even at a couple, thank my lucky stars.

    The Shows
    It's tough to say which show I'm looking forward to most. 4/25/77 is up there. Will be nice to pop in 10/21/83 just so I can scream "Kick Drum!" Similar to 10/12/84 in that the reason it wasn't released was sound quality issues. Interested to hear these shows sounding as good as possible. I'm intrigued with 9/10/91, because every recording I've heard of this has either too much Branford in the mix and not enough Jerry, or vice-versa. A lot of musicians on stage here, tough to have a very balanced mix of this show. There's some major heavyweight shows in this box, quite a few that probably would've been released individually as Dave's Picks. Anyways, long story short- the first show I'll probably listen to- 4/25/77, 10/26/89 or 9/10/91.

This offering from 30 Trips is a classic Bruce/Vinnie show! The whole fall 1990 tour really. For a band who just hired two new players this tour has some mighty fine moments. New York to the UK and more! Good stuff!
