If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

Of the 60 plus discs released in the Dave's Picks series perhaps my favorite is the DaP 18 disc with Comes a Time, Other One, Eyes, etc. Blows me away every time. I can't help but keep coming back to that single disc. What a release. I'm thinking we need more from that Orpheum run. A lot more

    Cornell 77 , at last !!!
Hey GD folks… it's been a long time since I have been engaged on dead.net. Here is what I recall about the Cornell 77 show. According, to deadbase, dupree's diamond news and the old Dat heads group it snowed that night which was unusual for the month of May in North America. So, that was a vibe factor; the Grateful Dead was a living organism that has a symbiotic relationship with not only the audience but the whole zeitgeist of vibe. As for the performance, the 1st set in my opinion is rather average, but the second set is very, very well played and feeds off the energy of the crowd. The "step back" banter from the band pleading with the audience not to rush the stage was great evidence of how much energy at the concert; something that didn't happen that much in most dead shows. However, many have claimed that this Cornell show is the best sounding Grateful Dead concert recording ever! Someone correct me if I'm wrong: the show was recorded at 7" 1/2" ips on 10 inch reels and Betty Cantor had a separate rig to record the show; this not a PA or monitor mix recording like so many other GD live recordings. I believe the Grateful Dead were using Sennheiser 421 for vocal microphones , tom tom mic's; and Garcia also used a Sennheiser 421 on his guitar cabinet as well. So, that's a lot of sound leakage but from a great microphone, not a Shure SM58 (industry standard) If you couple that with the gym like acoustics you can get a lot of hall with the recording. In fact, there was no way to avoid it with out severe isolation like in a controlled studio. It was also possible that Betty Cantor used some ambient microphones but to my knowledge that has never been confirmed. I also believe the Betty Boards from this era have been encoded with DBX, so it will be imperative that it should be decoded correctly for commercial remaster. Some of the early circulated transfers to PCM Betamax of Betty Board's have not be correctly decoded which yields a dull or "grabby" sound. Cornell was one that was correctly decoded which was why it sounds so good as a unauthorized recording. I recall sometime around 2003 or so, collectors had discovered the famous "interleave" recordings that gave us soundboard patches for the cuts on the master reels. Basically, the recordist ,Betty Cantor, would have a separate tape deck to start when the master reel is about to end during a performance; therefore, they could splice it in post production if need be. However, splicing two track live recordings was difficult back in the day but now with modern digital workstation it can be very possible to be seamless. The only caveat was those interleave recordings were on cassette and have not been confirmed to be a reel source so there could be a difference in sound quality for those moments and cuts. With all of this aside I am elated to learn the recording will be professionally mastered and released for everyone to enjoy. It really is a marvel show, but there are plenty other shows in this era that rival this show in earnest.

    Question, re. Scarlet>Fire download
I ordered a couple copies of the cornell box and received a confirmation slip. HOWEVER, I can't seem to download the Scarlet>Fire. I checked my visa and it shows Warner Music but says it's "pending". I wouldn't question this except for all the BS around ordering when this thing launched. I'm a little worried that my order hasn't gone through due to the website problems, even though I got the confirmation slip. So, can anyone else download the Scarlet>Fire and has your credit card been charged? Or anyone have same experience? Thanks!

Broke out E-town to vibe '77. They smoke out of the gate with Promised Land, Highest energy, Phil lights a string on fire, fix it during the 1rst break and drop of a cliff into They Love Each Other, just a grimey groove. Been too long since the moonshine. No doubt, overall, the strength and depth of this year is hard to top. We'll all be beautiful together!

I was at Phish '97 UNLV, then walked The Strip until 4 am. It was Thursday night so not very busy. Just strolling around with beer in hand, enjoying the lights in a post-show frame of mind kind of way. :) We got a 2 queen bed room on the 18th floor at MGM for $42 (it was a Thursday). In and out of Vegas in less than 24 hours....

It's great, isn't it? I had a feeling we weren't getting a bum steer when Dave talked up the big ones, like Playing, HCS, and Eyes, but to also get something special in an everyday song like Casey Jones is a story in itself. Jerry plays it like it's the first and last time anyone's ever gonna hear it. So yeah, if the closer Casey Jones is that good, you know the rest has got to be special too. I'd like a day with just this show and DaP 16.

This is a fabulous release. Everything about it is beautiful, the packaging, the book, the literature ...and music is excellent. Just epic recordings all throughout. As far as complaints go, I have to say I am taken aback a bit. Yes, one of my discs was lose in the box, but it's fine. I often have lose disks in CD shipments, from all vendors BTW.

The sound quality of my cassettes in the 90's went 8>9>5>7.Sound quality improved with the SHN then FLAC files. Now we all have sound quality of 5=7=8=9 and it's A++++++++++++...... Excellent (picture Mr. Burns tapping his fingers together).

Afternoon, rockers!!!! Got my box. Just one man's opinions, with the following qualifiers: 1) I was at 5/7. 2) I had excellent cassette copies back in the day. Music quality: Very good to excellent. Sound quality: Fair to moderate. Very thin sounding. Vocals not properly recorded. Just as the Bettys were back in the day........ Overall impression: totally underwhelming. Can we get back to 1968 now? Rock on rockers!! Doc To stimulate wildly weak and untrained minds is to play with mighty fires

Arrived on Saturday via UPS SurePost (listed on their website as "Even slower than Ground"). The corners of the shipping box were crushed, but there is like a half inch buffer on each end of the box to protect the inner contents, which were fine. A few discs had slipped, but no damage. One disc had glue on it. How the hell do you get glue on a CD during manufacturing ? I can only think the glue was used to put the liners together and was sloppily applied and when the discs were loaded, stuck to the disc. I use dbpoweramp to rip to 24 bit FLAC, and I was getting distortion on some tracks, I tried re-ripping, but figured out that Windows Media Player can't really handle the 24 bit, and adds distortion. VLC media player plays them fine. I'm impressed, the Cornell show really does sound spectacular. Amazing to get the tapes back and have the technology to be able to put them out in such a good sounding format. Interesting to hear differences in sound between the shows, as well as the variety of set lists. Amazing that this was 4 shows in the space of less than a week, and while they are all relatively near each other, it is still a lot of waking up in one city, getting to the gig, playing your little heart out and then back on the road. Kudos to them for creating the music in that time, and on the back end, the people who are now working to get it released back to the fans.

I've had the sound board awhile. Havent received box yet, but on the soundboard, there is a LOUD feedback squelch that precedes the laughter. I always imagined she laughed because it was an "oh man, that loud noise scared the poop out of me" moment. I was also wondering with the new Full Norman release if they would be able to fix the feedback. Sounds like they did, if all you hear is the laughter.

This is a really nice book and fits so well with the set.If you just got the AME or the single show release, this book is a great companion worth buying. Sort of dry, what you would expect from a University Press printing, it has a nice flow that back fills the GD story and tape trading before getting to show itself. It provides the context for the show and factoids that help explain how the event happened at all. If only all liner notes could be this detailed. Well done Mr Connors. BTW has anyone figured out what shows were used to patch the shows where the reel flips are on the Betty reels?
user picture

That is a great question KG and one I was wondering about myself. I recall on one of my early copies of the Cornell first set, I never had a complete soundboard version of the lazy lightning > supplication. So I was really interested to hear this one, and of course it's fantastic. But I was thinking, I wonder where this came from? I'm sure there are other places as well although I think you explained the Minglewood opener elsewhere as being a patch. I am also looking forward to reading that book, once I get some time away from little Rugrats and other creatures requiring my half to full attention. It's actually sunny on the back porch, might make for a nice afternoon. Currently hitting Tennessee Jed from Boston; well into the first set. I absolutely love this show. Happy Five-Seven everyone. The problem with reel flips and other missing bits of recording, like the late start on Minglewood, is that there was no interleave copy on a 2nd deck like some shows have. The missing material has to be substituted from somewhere, usually either an AUD or a SBD from a close date with the same sound and pace. Patches are the pink slime of the hobby, I just like to know where the patches comes from ;) Most likely from other shows in the set that had already been processed. The book is really well done I should have it finished today.

The Bill's birthday conundrum. Both good shows. Then there's 5/7/80 Cornell (Road Trips Vol. 4 No. 3), another great one. On the other hand, 5/7/89 itself is pretty epic as well. One of the craziest The Other Ones performed in that era (or any era for that matter. They pulled out all the stops on this one). They played some nice shows on Bill's birthday. Happy Birthday Bill!

In the confirmation email, the hyperlink I clicked downloaded 24 bit FLAC files to my computer, but only after the 4th attempt and using a hard wired computer, and disabling all wifi devices on my network. I'm not complaining but I think I may have been an unintentional screw up.

This is great being able to listen to Scarlet / Fire as one track, and without the "Take a Step Back" intro. Now can I get you to join up Help on the Way, Slipknot!, & Franklin's Tower? Or for that matter all of Scarlet / Fires and Estimated / Eyes from 77 / 78! Where do you stop? What if you have something like Dark Star / Me & My Uncle / Dark Star part II?

Jim speaketh wisely, that Swing Aud show is so good. I subtitled my soundboard copy "Killer Slipknot!!" I had spent some fun time trying to determine which official Help / Slip/ Franklin's was best, but didn't have any success; they'really pretty much all great, each with their nuances that made them special, but none that stood out above them all. Then I picked up a copy of the 2/26/77 and Slipknot! had me picking my face up off the floor. It starts off like your standard fare, but Jerry soon dominates the rap with these incredible solos, which come across loud and clear, in a tone that sounds like the Wolf to me; I would love to know if, on this first show of the tour, he decided to put down the Travis Bean for a night, to see if it was time for the Return of the Wolf. Regardless, Jerry own fire. Keith goes piano mode, to my liking, and lays down a fine tapestry of lead notes and rhythm chords. And there's nothing reserved or mellow about any of it; these guys are rocking out, Jerry and Keith - catch 'em if you can. I don't know where Bobby went - to turn down his amp I guess (I think he kind of knew when to get out of the way). And that's just one set of songs. The opening of the show and tour with Terrapin Station tells me that no matter what else was going on offstage, they still just did whatever they pleased when the lights went down, and that night, they said "this new one's pretty damn good, let's wow them". Last I checked, this performance occupied the #1 slot on Heady Version. The arrangement is the same, but Jerry sings without accompaniment mist of the song; they join him at the TERRAPIN climax. I'm not a fan of too many post-hiatus Playings, and definitely not when they break it up; but this one is an exception, as it's in the vein of the Orpheum masterpiece from the previous tour. Part of the magic is the Wheel that's in between. Much more developed intro - just fine. Sugared has exceptional jamming, and for a guy who doesn't like too many post-hiatus Eyes of the World, this would be up there as a favorite; Phil delivers some funk at the end you don't want to miss. Bring the Swing!

I'm up to Boston set 2 and the mix is incredible, it has a sound that is impossible to imagine as being played in Boston Garden. All the recordings so far have been so similar in sound and mix they could be mistaken for one of the other venues. Betty obviously knew what she wanted to hear and where she wanted to hear it in the mix. Her ability to have a separate feed and personal mixing desk allowed her to dial it in on headphones without worrying how it sounded in the hall. To have recorded this quality, show after show for most of the late 70s, capturing it to 2 track reels is such an amazingly fortunate thing to happen. That they still exist and can sound this great after 40 years is mind blowing. Thank You Betty

I don't like the slip-case cover art that was posted. Don't have the box set yet, but I'm assuming that's as good as it gets. I'm sticking with the images I used for my soundboards of these shows. I think if I did this correctly, anyone can access and download: https://goo.gl/photos/qS3CjiGcY66DFNed7

"Jerry's first solo in TLEO from Cornell sounds like how Charlie Chaplin walks. Unreal what he could do with the guitar." ....yes. I could see that....

Sort of have to don't you, after all the efforts to have it in our hands in time.I'm on the 2nd set now, i've restarted Scarlet 3 times as i keep wanting a little more pipe time before the Dew. Mutron me Jerry. Speaking of the Mutron, the Dave notes specified some of the tapes that got returned he was so excited about and one was one my favorites 11/6/77, so it' looks like that will be a future Dave's Pick as it's a perfectly recorded 3 disk show with no patches required. Wolf+Mutron=mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm https://archive.org/details/gd1977-11-06.122296.sbd.flac16 The booklet was nice, the Cornell 77 book better, but what caught my attention was the amount of online commentary from LMA they both used. Imagine the surprise of finding out you were quoted in a book and to be known forever only as Poo Face.

It's better to be quoted as Poo Face than not to be quoted at all.... I read that in a fortune cookie once...

Keith fan I have 2 of those on the shirt. Boston and Ithaca. Do you have Boston in higher resolution? Mississippi Half Step is nearly perfect. One botched vocal is all it takes. P.S. what's the best official release Terrapin from 77? I want to listen to one where the guitar growls at thfe end. Who knows what I mean? Rowr. You know, when they do the pick slide trick. Is that Weir? Rrrowr.
