    well, like I say
uploading 300 dpi is a waste because the Web can only display 72 dpi and the software is almost certain to choke on the hi-res, but whatever.

    RE: Submitting a Fan Photo
Looking to upload via the Submit content under user name on the left, which I have not tried to do yet, not post in a message. Dunno if there is any difference but I could see allowing less in a regular forum post as opposed to a "gallery". On the first page of the Community link at the top left I found, "File size limit is 1.2m. (Photo may take between 1-12hrs to appear on the site.)" At the Submit Fan Photo page it shouts (LOL), "ALL PHOTOS ARE SUBJECT TO APPROVAL AND WILL NOT BE "LIVE" IMMEDIATELY. IT CAN TAKE BETWEEN 1-24 HOURS TO APPEAR." so I figured a human inspects each one for several reasons. Also on the Submit Fan Photo page it has, "Upload your JPG, GIF, or PNG file here!" underneath the field with the browse button. I could see not wanting any uncompressed .tif or .tga files. Yeah I agree jpegs are the best for all around usage. I did some image info viewing from the Community link>Fan Photos. I sampled from Tickets, Concert and Festivals. I tried some I thought might be older and recent uploads. One labeled Further Tour 2010 has to be pretty recent, right? :) All the ones I checked were 400 pixels high, varying widths (600, 533, 419, 181, ...) and 300 dpi when saved and opened in a simple photo program. I wonder if there is an automated process before or after approval to make them all 400 pixels high? There was some other location I found max file and pixel size along with lots of other kinds of info, hence why I thought I could find it fairly easily again, but it was after continuously surfing the site for an hour or 3 so info retention was certainly diminished. I don't recall anything about file part but I want to say I saw a little over 1000 pixels as the max for one of the dimensions. I scanned it in at 300 dpi, will leave it at that, resize it down to 400 pixels high from 586 and it is only 68 KB so that should not be a problem. I'll give it a go here shortly and we shall see what happens.

the Fan Pix upload is quite temperamental and your problem may well have nothing to do with your image per se. That said, the Web can only display 72 dpi, so uploading hi-res is asking for trouble. I would recommend keeping the image no more than about 400 pixels wide at 72 dpi, just because bigger than that starts doing weird things to the page layouts. Jpg is the most reliable format to use, although in theory gif and bmp work also. Tif definitely does not. Also, all pix go into a moderation queue where I look at 'em and mostly turn 'em loose. About half the time the uploads contain no image so there's nothing for me to turn loose (see above). Still, this info should help you avoid some of the known trouble vectors. Thanks! (And yeah, one of the reasons the uploads go to moderation is that we occasionally get spammers or others uploading porn and the like and that is so not happening here.)

Last week I stumbled across technical info about uploading photos and now I can not find it. FAQ & HELP links at the bottom of the page are about the store. When I do a search I get many results but unfortunately clicking on a result that is in the forum goes to the first page of that topic instead of the post with the info returned in the search :( Since it seemed I came across the info fairly easy I thought I could find it again fairly easily so I did not note the info but no such luck. When one goes to submit content I would think info/restrictions would be listed there but I did not see anything. It could be somewhere obvious that I overlooked but right now I am out of time to search and this appears to be the place to ask. My questions are: 1. What is the max file size to upload a photo? 2. What is the max size in pixels? Thanks

    1. The full show downloads are in the process of being re-loaded and will be back shortly. 2. Per the engineer: "all of the FLAC files are sourced from .wav files of the original masters and are not converted mp3s"

Not sure where the comment about torrents/stealing came from. For the record, I own several thousand recordings and have paid for every one. :) Still wondering about the Road Trips Full Show downloads - were they removed on purpose, and might they be made available again?

I'm curious about how to record shows by Phil & Friends, Furthur, and who ever. You used to need a ticket for the "Tapers Section" but how is that all handled now? do you just show up at a show with your gear and they just let you in ? Check Out My Orignal Music at myspace.com/salaversano

not really. If you can remember a distinctive phrase in the post, put it in quotes and use the search tool on the upper left. That's about it.

but then you'd get everything in which that username appeared. You can't search for posts BY someone, but you can search for their name. If you can remember a distinctive phrase in the search you're probably going to have better luck searching for that.

I see that RARE CUTS AND ODDITIES is available from the GD store again. That's "grate" for everyone who would still like to have a copy at the reasonable issue price rather than going on eBay or Amazon and paying a premium to get the CD but it would be nice if when a CD goes out of print there was a notation in the store listings that it is scheduled to be re-issued or has been discontinued. Would it be that difficult to have a list of "out of print" discs that are not scheduled for a re-issue?I, for one, would like to know if several of the Dick's Picks volumes, which are currently unavailable, will be re-issued.

This site is becoming a popular destination for spammers. They are now making posts in an effort to hock their wares. See page 23 of the Philly '89 Now Available release pages and the post by jerrym. You can tell they are spammers because they are always new members for less than a day. Is there any way to prevent this?

I'm sure there are ways around it but at least they'd have to work harder. I can see the drawback being those legit users that just don't know the answers. Nonetheless, you are on to something. Good thinking, kudos.

This is a great idea, I too, have noticed the increased spammer presience and a question to answer would be ideal, there are so many to choose from, it could be changed every 3 to 6 months, multiple choice:strangers stopping strangers just to________ a. say hello b. smoke a bowl c. dance and twirl d. shake hands the list is endless:) what a great idea.

JimmieJi, very good question. I've had a couple of posts where I wish I could have edited them. But, unfortunately there is no way to do it brother. I must say, that this always makes me think even harder about my posts, and what I've written. So I guess it does help in that sense...but once you press post comment it's set in dead.net stone. A few suggestions for when you post here though: 1. Always preview comment ~ to see how it's gonna post, this will help 2. Proofread your comments, although there is a built in spell checker reread what you write. 3. Sometimes on long posts I'll copy and paste into Notepad because there is nothing more frustrating than writing a big post and accidentally hitting forward or back in the browser and your post is gone. 4. Always have fun! Hope this helps! ~CC _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? You mean the extended version or 2004 reissue of the Terrapin Station album with the 16 minute Dancing at the end of the disc? Released - 1977 Original Label - Arista A re-mastered version was initially released as part of the box-set, Beyond Description on Oct. 26, 2004 on Rhino. Released individually March 2006 You can buy the extended version on the album, I just checked on itunes for $9.99 or I'm sure you can find it on Amazon or somewhere else. Hope this helps our new friend. ;-) _____________________________________________ Will you come with me? Once in awhile you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right!

Hello,I would like to know if, according to copyrights, I am allowed to do my own Shirt with using at least the Steal Your Face logo on its backside by uploading this logo to this website: www.spreadshirt.com I DO NOT WANT to make this Shirt on this website to sell it (even through a web t-shirt shop). I only would like to create and make only one personnal shirt for me. May you give me further information if such operation is illegal or not according to pending licences on this logo. Best Regards. (Sorry for my bad english written, I am French !)

It's available on amazon.com apparently... but only in MP3 format... makes no sense why it's not here any more.Makes more sense to have people pay for it here, than download it from amazon, or leech it off a bit-torrent site....

I would encourage the band to make all the rehearsal shows available for download. I and I think a lot of folks would love to get this music. The music this band is making is pleasing a lot of folks like shows haven't done at least for me since the 70's and a few good years in the 80's. The energy level is high and it shows in the music they are making. All downloads do not have to be 3 discs. May 28 fit on 2 discs with GDTRFB fitting at the end of dics 1. Mayeb they could package all the shows together. Thank you..Big Moe

why is it when I come to this site (and I have an account) there is no music? Shouldn't there be some streaming of great dead music when I come here?! Its about the music after all! I have really considered buying the winterland 1973 (nov 10) cd package but how can I preview o make sure it is the cd of the tape I owned so long ago? Any suggestions? Archive dot org removes it when there is a commercial release (fair enough) but how can I have a quick listen before buying? Its not on iTunes... any suggestions? Also, Dead.net should consider a format like iTunes where you can have a quick preview of songs....(but not sell by the song!!! never go there!)

Marye, thought you were gonna check on the Download series availability? Just looking to see if there's any plans. Would like to get the flacs, and I'm sure so many others would too. I can't see how it actually costs the company money to keep a link online... it's revenue generating. I can get the mp3's from amazon (no thanks) and so may forums have the bittorrents but that's just stealing. Why can't legit customers get the product? makes little sense to me.... Still would love to get the artwork for the cd's too.. not sure why that seems to be such a hard thing to acquire too.

Just about the entire GD catalogue including the Download Series and Rare Cuts and Oddities can be purchased online in FLAC or MP3 or ALAC from: http://www.livedownloads.com/live-music/3,461/Grateful-Dead-mp3-flac-do… you can download the front cover from that site too. If you want all the artwork send me a pm and I will tell you where to find it Why you can buy there releaes from livedownlaods and not from here beats me..but at least they can be found somewhere!
