The Dead Rock the Cradle of Civilization

2-CD/1-DVD Collection Rocking The Cradle: Egypt 1978 Celebrates The 30th Anniversary of the Band’s Historic Concerts at Giza With Previously Unreleased Audio and Video

Fans Who Pre-Order on Dead.net Will Receive an Exclusive Bonus Disc Containing Additional Egypt Performances.

Available September 30 from Grateful Dead Productions and Rhino

In the fall of 1978, author and counterculture icon Ken Kesey reported to a close friend that he had recently witnessed “the latest Rocking of the Cradle of Civilization.” The course of events that he went on to recall was the Grateful Dead’s assorted family, friends and fellow Pranksters—“Pyramidiots” of various origins—descent upon Egypt’s Nile Valley that culminated in three legendary concerts performed at the foot of the Great Pyramid in Giza. Although perhaps unintentionally, the entire adventure might have been easily seen, as Kesey did, as one very special contribution to the then-critical Middle Eastern peace effort. To commemorate the 30-year anniversary of this cosmic convergence of sound and sphinx, Grateful Dead Productions and Rhino will release ROCKING THE CRADLE: EGYPT 1978, a collection of highlights from this historic three-night stand. The 2-CD/1-DVD set will be available September 30 at regular retail outlets and www.dead.net for a suggested list price of $34.98. Fans who pre-order the set from Dead.net will receive an exclusive eight-song bonus disc that includes additional unreleased performances from the Egypt run. A digital version that includes all the CD content will also be also available.

Recorded September 15-16, 1978 at the Gizah Sound and Light Theater, the original 24-track recordings have been mixed and mastered for this set in HDCD by Jeffrey Norman for optimal sound quality. The two CDs contain 18 tracks featuring more than two and a half hours of music. Except for three performances that appeared on 2004’s Beyond Description boxed set, the tracks on ROCKING THE CRADLE have never been released. The accompanying DVD features more than 100 minutes of footage, including 13 songs from the third and final Egypt show, which took place during a rare lunar eclipse. It is misxed in 5.1 surround sound and presented in DTS surround and PCM stereo sound. Legendary promoter Bill Graham called this show “one of the great experiences of my life.” The DVD also includes a featurette titled “The Vacation Tapes” which catches never-before-seen candid band footage from the trip. The set comes in pyramid-inspired packaging and features rare photos from the trip and liner notes by longtime Dead associate Alan Trist, who was pivotal in making the trek to Egypt happen.

Trist recalls that “the Dead long dreamed of playing at the foot of the Great Pyramid.” However, pulling off this dream proved to be a monumental task as no other American band had ever performed there. The band spent months planning and making arrangements with the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. The band agreed to pay all of its own expenses for the trip and donated all of the proceeds from ticket sales to several Egyptian charities, as well as the Department of Antiquities, which preserves the country’s ancient treasures. Another major challenge was the minimal amount of power available at Gizah, which required the band to bring in an enormous generator to power its state-of-the-art sound and recording equipment. In the end, the massive effort paid off. The shows were spectacular successes, attracting a mix of world cultures including American Dead Heads and European fans as well as curious Egyptians and Bedouins on camels drawn by the unusual spectacle.

Unbeknownst to the band at the time, these shows would soon have a remarkable historical context. On September 17, the day after the last show, the Camp David Peace Accords were signed after nearly two weeks of secret negotiations. The Accords lead to the Egyptian-Israeli Peace Treaty, which made Egypt the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel and ended a near 30-year state of war between the two countries. One has to wonder if the Dead’s message of peace and love might have had some sort of impact on the negotiations.

ROCKING THE CRADLE features Jerry Garcia (guitar, vocals), Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals), Keith Godchaux (keyboards), Mickey Hart (drums), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), Phil Lesh (electric bass, vocals), and Bob Weir (rhythm guitar, vocals). These performances took place just a few months before the band released Shakedown Street, its tenth studio album. The shows featured performances of several songs from the upcoming album, including the title track, “I Need A Miracle,” “Fire On The Mountain,” and an updated take on the blues standard, “Stagger Lee.” The band also peppered its Egyptian setlists with classics like “Deal,” “Truckin’” and “Stella Blue.”

that is all... I fondly hope all this will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, Badger, if you change your mind send me a PM and I'll see what I can do from sunny California to eliminate this pain and suffering.

    Ha! I knew it!
I knew this was gonna be another disappearing page...so I saved a copy, you know, for evidence! CB: do you really catch a lot of crap because of a French address? That's lame, you're a valued member of the international Deadhead community, I'd've thought.

    guess what
http://www.deadnetstore.com/egypt1978.aspx was up for a while and has now vanished. Even when I do get to ordering I know that the system will not accept my credit card due to an unexplained problem with my French address, so I will have to make an long and expensive phone call to California, explain the problem (again) and convince the person to bypass the credit card security system so I can obtain the product. I have been pretty patient and ordered everything so far but actually I'm going to pass on this one ...its not my favourite Dead period anyway and I shall make a no doubt futile protest by withdrawing my custom in this case.

Well, in my ranting above, I made few mistakes. NYE 76 came out in January, and I forgot about From the Vault 3. So, in September, that will make 7 releases in 21 months. That's one every 3 months, me likey, keep them coming. In these 7 releases, we have 5 full shows (NYE 76, From the Vault 3, and the Winterland Box), 3 compilations, and a DVD. Yeah, these Rhino and GDP guys are terrible. Wake up and smell the goodness. Dump the sourpuss attitude and enjoy all the great music!

I wasn't "crying" about not having whole shows although like everyone else I do prefer them when I can get them and I've been pretty happy with Road Trips although I think they should drop the limited bonus stuff idea and just make them three discs. Those bonus discs are some of the best stuff and deserve to be around forever much like the bonus disc here. With the Road Trips releases we get full cd's that are packed to the edge but the point I was making about the DVD is that at 100 minutes, it isn't all that full compared to other releases. Perhaps the bonus feature The Vacation Tapes will make this alot fuller. I'm still wondering why this version of Stagger Lee was released yet again when we have a whole show on the 14th that remains completely untouched.

Well the music as a whole wasn't like three great nights at Winterland. There were a lot of hash throats happening, and Jerry would lock himself into the bathroom on the plane. Everyone had the experience of their lives. Kesey wired King Cheops burial chamber as a reverb box. The horse rides in the desert, the scene at the hotel poo, boat trip and still some very good to great music.l

Does anyone know what the DVD source material is? Did they videotape or film? I have a copy of the Kesey footage which seems to be from 16mm, though I may be wrong. It's haphazardly thrown together: a lot of incomplete songs, random interviews and goofy fun... Great to see and slightly frustrating as the sound was never great, but hey, it was the only footage I thought existed! I'm guessing that might be "The Vacation Tapes" maybe? Or is that something else entirely? Do we know if the footage on this DVD was multi-camera? Either way, I'll be purchasing, but am very curious. Also surprised it hasn't surfaced before. Internet and all. Unless it's the Kesey footage extended. And while discussing DVD's, anyone know if Rhino or GDP have access to the Capital Theater, NJ video footage from '77 and '78? Amazing shows, multi-camera. THOSE would be a DVD release to end all releases. If there are plans to release that footage, PLEASE consider releasing entire shows. There are no weak links there. And I might as well add on Durham, NC 1978. Probably the most energetic Dead show ever captured on video. Jerry doing the Townsend windmill? It's out of control and the boys are all at their peak. Again, multi-camera and very well edited. As for the entire show debate, I rarely purchase incomplete shows AND I understand that not all releases can be that. I buy what works for me. So long as they keep releasing whole shows alongside partial shows, I'll be happy. Show highlights have never been my thing, but they may be someone else's and it may give Rhino the revenue to release those wonderful Box Sets like the Winterland Shows which were so marvelously packaged and sounded so beautiful. Just keep the releases coming, there's no way to please everyone. I'm happy SOMEONE is taking the time to release SOMETHING, whether I buy every one or not. In the meantime, as someone else on here pointed out, the music's available through trade and download everywhere. It may not be remastered in HDCD, but it's out there. We're very lucky fans no matter how you slice it. And Rhino folks, feel free to explain your thoughts here or elsewhere. There are some of us who would love to hear from you from time to time. Or maybe someone do an interview with those folks, as well as the GDP folks. Sometimes keeping the doors of communication open helps people to feel heard, which may lessen some of the bitterness I've felt on this and other forums. I would look forward to that. Just my 2 cents.

I somewhat agree with alot of others, we like the whole full show releases, thats how we like to hear the band play live, the whole shows have a flavor as they play, and they are spectacular, but im sure its not easy to pull these releases up from the vaults as whole shows often. The Winterland 73' set is an epic event for me, i still cant get over how good it sounds, i just cant get it off the constant play list in my ipod,, they did a great job on it, but it would be hard to expect great box set after great box set, they do a good job keeping things spicey,,and its also not easy to afford the large sets often, i am very happy to see this Cradle of Civilization come out, the Camels, and the different peoples, and the backdrop,, the idea that they (Band Members) had by going there to do there music is great, i wish i coulda been there to see it, but i wasnt, and thats whats going to be so nice about this, after the great job they did getting The Winterland 73' realease together and the other great ones before, Im looking forward to this one, and to the future!!

I'm totally looking forward to this one...I got on the bus just after it happened and my deadheaded friends were all still talking about what a cool idea it was. Wasn't there a lunar eclipse during one of the shows (my birthday)? Yes, these shows were initially rejected for release (the album was supposed to pay for the trips), but remember that this was back in the day when the Dead were signed to a real corporate record company. Many of the Dicks Picks would have been deemed unsuitable for (double-vinyl!) release at that time too. The market has changed and it's 30 years ago (damn, I'm old!) and here they come--yeehaw! I'm loathe to wade back into the complete-show vs. compilation argument again, but please realize that, whatever your personal preference, there is no One True Way to listen to this music. If you don't like what they're sellin, don't buy. In this case, with the performances universally acknowledged as hit-and-miss, why in the world would you want to own the misses? Me, I can't wait for these hits to hit!

Someone once gave me a VHS tape of the third night, the lunar eclipse. It is super mellow and fun to watch. I bet the DVD will look and sound amazing, especially when compared to what I have. I don't think I will buy it, but I'm looking forward to watching it and listening to the CD whenever my library gets it in. I agree with the other posters though about not complaining too much about GDP. The musicians - and by extension their support network - have given me so much in the past, I'm happy to pay them back with the occasional purchase.

Granted the performances might have been better, but as your realtor will tell you it's all about LOCATION,LOCATION,LOCATION! It's hard to top the pyramids. I have another idea for future DVD prospects. Over the years, the Grateful Dead played various T.V. venues such as The Tom Snyder Show and Saturday Night Live for instance. I sure would enjoy seeing something like that come about and am guessing I would not be alone! Keep brainstorming!

Hey mountainlynx, there's a DVD compilation of the Tomorrow Show w/Tom Snyder that has a pretty good Dead set, performances and interviews - "Tom Snyder's Electric Kool-Aid Talk Show". There's some other pretty cool "Tomorrow" DVDs, and some Dick Cavett DVDs worth watching, not the Dead but other 60's icons (Jefferson Airplane went on like the day after Woodstock). Just so you know. Cheers. To jump into the "whole shows" debate, I don't mind compilation albums at all, hell, I listen to Infrared Roses all the time. A good collection album (I think) would be a gathering of kickin' special guest artist tracks. I'm guessing the licensing would pose problems, though. (Preorder minus 3000 minutes and counting...)

The one thing about the releases through this site is that occasionally they really break through with some great releases; other times, not as much. The ones I don't want to buy or don't interest me enough, I don't purchase; the ones that look really good either by venue, year, or setlist I do. That is the bottom line here folks. If you don't like the releases of the half shows, or Road Trips series then don't buy them. Basically if folks keep purchasing the releases that are offered here, they will continue to put out more of the same. While we all enjoy full shows, sometimes there are some true gems that come together through compilations. Who can argue Dead Set or Reckoning or even Without a Net that these are great compilations. The Egypt shows may not have been the greatest recorded, but I'm truly looking forward to the bonus footage of seeing Kesey and the boys in the late 70s running around Egypt as well as the show for what its worth. I do plan on picking this one up as soon as I can. I would love to see some more dvds from the vault series here as well. It was going good, and then it just stopped. As to why I don't know. Anyhow I for one I am looking forward to seeing Egypt. Oh, by the way, WHERE IS THE PREORDER LINK???

i remember the egypt shows being so legendary for years before we managed to put our hands on any tapes. Then we found out that in true hypnocratic examples, the shows were not musically big highlights. nevertheless the place, the time, the historical events, and of course the grateful Dead playing the pyramids always made this run and oustanding one. i have most of the 3 nights on tapes and i can remember the fire being good but also the eyes and there is a monster Space!! talk about getting lost in time and space... Sure this is not a selection based on musical performance but i admit this is such a legend that 30 years later issuing a nice box set is a real treat. By the way people at rhino, please make sure the quality of the packaging is better than on the Winterland 73 where some of the cardboard is really crap... But amazing design, one of the best i have seen in a box set in many years... There was some 10 years ago a box set (bootleg) with 3 cds of Egypt shows on the european market... Can't wait to see deadheads dancing at night in front of Gizey pyramid...

Folks everyone will have different opinions and such. If you don't like the discs the answer is simple, don't buy them. I think in our community we are very privileged that we have had the opportunity and more importantly the encouragement from the artists involved to distribute their live material freely. Yes money will be made off this, but such is life. Plus why shouldn't the effort that went into these packages be rewarded. My self I don't buy every Dead set that comes out simply because I can't afford it. But when I can, I like doing it. My reasoning is that it will encourage and enable people to continue to produce quality packages for us, and in return I don't mind giving them some money so they can continue to do so (this includes not only the band but the other artists, musical, technical and otherwise that are involved in these productions). It's the same approach I take towards artists I enjoy in general. If I like thier work I don't mind shelling out some money so that the artist can be free to have more time to create. Remember we can all act as patrons in our small ways. I see it as allowing an artist some freedom from financial concerns so they can produce. In the case of the GD, a band that is no longer an entity, well for me it's more about support the folks at GDP so they can keep on going. I enjoy their products and I'll buy the ones I'm interested in. But why complain about what you are not getting? Suggesting is fine, but why complain? I'm no guru on the industry, but I think it must be rare for a group like the GD to be able to put out so much material eventhough they are no longer an entity. And hey like so many have said, copies of the show are circulating, so if you want the complete shows I'm sure you can find them. Now I know folks will say that the amounts of money involved are at issue. That artists make huge sums. That's true. And yes it gnaws on my noggin at times. The world isn't perfect and balance is in short supply...so I'll just try to keep on doing the best I can. Okay enough rambling, back to work for me...have fun all

So what's wrong with making money? Rhino is not in business for their health, their in business to make money. Let them make millions for all I care; good for them. What's it to me if they make money? This idealistic hatred of wealth is sophomoric and a hypocracy.

It's the Mummy's Curse raising digital hell... or a last minute dispute involving payment of royalties to the descendants of Cheops, and after two thousand years there's like a million of them. Don't think "preorder" has happened yet, and haven't seen any postings referring to the schedule. I'm guessing they'll have it all worked out fairly soon. Still seems to be some buginess in logging on, I'll try once or twice before it's successful then see my screenname listed multiple times.

Generally (previously) if you have signed up for e-mails from here, you get a lavish e-mail from which you can pre-order - when they are ready, I guess. I expect to receive such a mail any day now. To be honest, I expected one a couple of days ago. Patience is limited, as are all virtues. Indeed the cover art is cool.

Just a note to update the impatient among us: apparently dead.net has been experiencing technical difficulties during a server migration. Don't think preordering of the Egypt '78 set has begun, and I haven't seen any postings as to when it will. The darn thing won't be released until the end of September anyway, y'all will have plenty of time to preorder - I'm sure there will be enough to go around. In the meantime, stream a show from archive.org, they sound pretty good. Cheers MitD

"On August 3rd, 2008 simonrob said: Generally (previously) if you have signed up for e-mails from here, you get a lavish e-mail from which you can pre-order - when they are ready, I guess. I expect to receive such a mail any day now. To be honest, I expected one a couple of days ago. Patience is limited, as are all virtues. Indeed the cover art is cool. " I've gotten that e-mail days or even weeks after the fact.

This just keeps going on and on and.......... I think that too many of us are into the Egypt gig and they might be out of the bonus disc- which really makes it all worth while. The one who says it will be out in September fails to recognize that. Marye, whoever you are, keeps saying it's all good. Marye - are you actually part of Dead.net? I'm new to this site but not new to BS, so what is the truth? Show me the truth! My money is waiting.

So it is not a matter of being out of bonus discs, and while I still don't have specifics I am assured the preorder is going live real soon now. And I'm the forum host, so yes, part of Dead.net. Hope this helps. Your impatience is well understood. Stay tuned. Thank you.

Yep I feel strongly that after a band are done,ANY new albums/dvds etc.are to be applauded. It seems mean spirited somewhat to complain about this edition,as if Rhino and GDP are going to make millions from this, whereas its sad old guys like myself that are dead(ahem!!) excited about this edition. I think with deadnet and all the releases we all get an insight into how the band could be maddening, crazy, sloppy yet utterly beguiling, like no other band ever!Thats why we ALL still love 'em no?

I had a countdown started for the 1st of august and then it stopped to a shuddering halt after a couple of days, disappointing indeed......hope the preorder will start very, very soon!

No, no cold here, just another bozo. Lookit, Dead are and always will be copasetic. Made a decision to cut all loose to Rhino - pretty much - one might say "chips cashed in" but that said they gave us so much for free. Don't forget some of the boys (we know who they are) paid the ultimate price for their muse and their music (in that order). Like my other brah's, I'll buy what floats my boat, and decline otherwise. This is unique, is what it is,deserves "discovery" for that reason alone. Put me down for one and another as a Christmas gift for sis (saw GD 2 months before my first show, Englishtown, my first being Rochester 11/5/77 - yes, that would be DP #34). Rock on, and remember to wave your freak flag high in honor of JIMI (RIP 9/70). "DtM"

Rocking the Cradle plus Road Trips 1.4 - all for a very nice price. Nice one, Rhino. I was convinced and I've ordered them. Only thing is - will Road Trips also be out on Sept. 30 or will I have to wait a bit longer. Whatever, it will be worth the wait.

Since when are Rocking The Cradle and RTV1N4 available? I've been waiting for the link to appear for pre-ordering Rocking The Cradle and now I hear the next Road Trips is up for pre-order as well? I followed the link someone posted a while ago to the then-inactive pre-order page for Rocking The Cradle. Now it has Road Trips stuff. Amazing. Can anyone point out where I might find the info page for Road Trips V1N4 or is this not meant to be visible yet? Not a bad little combo really - Egypt, then to Winterland, then back to Winterland for a party. Wait, I just realised - I'll have all the 1978 releases - these and the two DPs. How did that happen?
