    I undertook the Taper's Section last November with a pretty simple vision: to have fun providing folks a regular opportunity to hear vault material that kept their interest in Grateful Dead music fresh.

    Recently, I and others that work on dead.net became aware that certain fans had been regularly downloading the tracks offered in the Taper Section. From the very beginning, this program has always been intended to be a "for streaming only" service. Downloading was never announced, described or promoted in any manner. The situation that developed over the past months is very different than my original plan.

    Where we’re at today requires us to step back, gather some information, do some thinking and get back to you. In the meantime, we ask that you all realize that dead.net's and GDP's commitment to the Dead Head community is unchanged. We’re very excited to be hard at work with Rhino on a number of very cool releases and programs that you’ll be hearing about soon. Please bear with us until then.

    This week, we’re going to explore some cool moments from the Family Dog in 1969, as well as some great material from 1980 and a taste of 1972.

    Although most shows in the Bay Area in the late 1960s were BGP-produced concerts, there was a very hip alternative promoter, namely Chet Helms and his Family Dog at the Great Highway. At the end of the summer of ’69 (no Bryan Adams jokes, please), the Grateful Dead played a few shows at Chet’s cool venue, and from those shows we have some interesting material. From 8/29/69, we have a nice Easy Wind, Me and My Uncle>High Time, as well as the show-closing Lovelight, and from the next night, 8/30/69, we have a very good Morning Dew from early in the show. Be sure to check back next week for another rare track from the Family Dog in 1969.

    One thing we always get excited about is a great tour with consistently great performances, with highlights too numerous to list. The mid-August to early-September 1980 tour is one such stretch of shows, and we have a few examples of great material from this tour this week. Unfortunately, two of the best shows from the tour are not in the vault (9/6 at Lewiston and 9/2/80 at Rochester), but what does live in the vault is exceptional. From 8/27/80 at Pine Knob in Michigan, the second set opening trio of China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider>C.C. Rider (or China>Rider>Rider, if you will) is as high energy as they come. From three nights later in Philadelphia we have the ending sequence of the show on 8/30/80, featuring Space>Not Fade Away>Black Peter>Sugar Magnolia, One More Saturday Night. A classic 1980 sequence if there ever was one. Unfortunately, the first set of this show is not in the vault. Finally from this tour, we have the show opener on 8/31/80 at the Capital Center in Landover, MD, with a rocking duo of Alabama Getaway>Promised Land. As the flipside to the Philly show above, the second set from this Cap Center show is not in the vault.

    Lastly this week, we have a couple of tracks from the first night of the Europe 72 tour, the first two songs played on the tour, in fact. Both of these songs from 4/7/72 in London have a little extra something, as the band was clearly happy to be playing in Europe, a feeling that would evidently continue through the final show on 5/26/72 in London. Oh, yes, the songs: Greatest Story Ever Told and Sugaree. Enjoy.

    How about this then?
    Boycott Rhino, they own the rights to just about every '80's cartoon. Transformers, G.I Joe. They bought up the rights to the dead's treasure trove. They want to treat their consumer with contempt. So I'll treat them by being content to put my wallet back in my pocket. The new motto. So if it says Rhino on it........ Stick it back on the shelf!

    The Starbucks thing
    People keep alluding to this, and of course a vehement comment about the Starbucks release is what prompted David Gans's heated response last week... I think there are real reasons why the Starbucks release concerns many Dead Heads. They may not be fair reasons, but they're valid from a certain point of view, and I don't think they've been aired in a calm way yet (I might have missed a post, though). First, rightly or wrongly, I'd imagine that for a lot of us, Starbucks represents a certain kind of corporate, yuppie mentality--huge international chain, highly standardized product and merchandizing environment, etc. The opposite of what the Dead stood for in many of our imaginations. That's a romanticized image: the Dead have been a big (or at least mid-sized) business for a long time now. And a negative attitude toward Starbucks may be unfair. But still, there have to be at least a few unreconstructed hippies around the Dead organization who could tell you that the Starbucks alliance would cause a gut reaction in some fans. That gut reaction is not necessarily a reason for Rhino/GDP to refrain from putting out a Starbucks release, but it does, I think, explain at least some of the negative response to it on these boards. Especially combined with (and this is my second point) the fact that the new Starbucks release comes at a time when archival releases are few and far between. This is two best-ofs released in the last four years. Obviously, it took somebody some man-hours to put the new one together, and I imagine many fans wish those man-hours had been spent on a release that they could appreciate, instead. This combines with some frustration about Three From The Vault, which many found to be a less-than-overwhelming release, but which seems like it may have been easier to market to a mass audience than, say, the once-rumored Winterland '73 box would have been. In other words, there seems to be a perception, not entirely unjustified, that more effort right now is being put into trying to recruit new fans/customers than trying to please the faithful. (To be fair, the faithful can be very hard to please--we're loyal, but veeeery cantankerous, and often passionate rather than considered in our responses.) There's nothing, absolutely nothing, wrong with Rhino/GDP trying to enlarge the audience for Grateful Dead music. It's not like '87, when there was a delicate ecology to the scene that was thrown out of whack by the arrival of the "Touchheads" (then again, that's when I first got into the Dead, and here I am still, twenty years later). Now, it's just a question of how many people are going to buy each new vault release, and so it's truly the more the merrier. Right? Maybe. Again, I would never argue that Rhino/GDP should NOT try to increase their audience. But from the hardcore fan's perspective, there can certainly be a difference between a label that's dedicated to serving an existing, knowledgeable fanbase and one that's dedicated to appealing to as broad a market as possible. I'm a big Dylan collector, and I don't think I'm alone in feeling that the big problem with Columbia/Sony's approach to Dylan archival sets is that they're trying to appeal to a broad, uncommitted audience, rather than the real hardcore fans. It's no coincidence, I think, that Starbucks also released an exclusive Dylan album, Live At The Gaslight 1962--and Dylan collectors were wildly disappointed with this. What was on it was great, but it left off a good chunk of what's on the circulating Gaslight tape, maybe so as not to scare off casual purchasers with too many unfamiliar songs. Again, Columbia/Sony's Dylan archival releases always seem calculated to rope in as many casual fans as possible, rather than trying to get it right (if I may say so) for the hardcore fans. It's possible that some of us have reacted to the Starbuck's set, 3FTV, and the discontinuance of the DPs and Download Series as Rhino's steps in that direction, as trying to appeal to a broad but casual audience at the expense of the faithful. I take DL2's and everybody else's word for it that this is not the case--that it's just taking a while for Rhino to get all its cylinders firing, and that there will be lots of things to make us hardcore fans very happy (something that the Taper's Section mp3s were doing, incidentally--one reason why taking them away provoked such a reaction). I live in hope. But I just thought I'd point out that the reaction to the Starbucks set was not entirely paranoid or silly. Let's hope the Starbucks set creates thousands and thousands of new Dead fans, and that all of them are ready to make a big box o' '73 their next purchase.

    it's working for me, however...
    ok, i too was a downloader- but i feel no guilt for it. if no one running the show knew until recently about the downloading, the people running the forums (what are you currently listening to? what's in your mp3 player?) certainly did and mercifully weren't telling!!! if my downloading was a contributing factor, i will line up for my lashes with the wet noodle... or for streaming poor quality sound... but i can live with it. it isn't ideal- but, as willie nelson says, 'thankfully, i am not in charge' so, my new thing on mondays will be to tune in and enjoy while grading papers instead of tuning in, downloading, giggling like a little kid on her birthday, and loading up my mp3 player will new goodies to take to school to play for myself and all the impressionable young minds... in an ironic twist, our school has prohibited teachers from bringing in music (or film, etc) to use in the classroom for either academic or recreational purposes. the reason given is that the teacher and the school may be sued for copyright infringement (can you smell the disney attorneys in the air there???) and the school can't pay the fines (up to 10k)... so my plan was to continue my old plan: all dead, all day... and this decision to drop mp3s has NOT changed my plan at all (unless the suits come knocking on the door of 1607 looking to take me for all the $500 i'm worth...). although my other plans for an all sugar mag or all shakedown st cd will probably not pan out... i don't want to pour gas on the fire! anyway, david, you have been more than kind to me (and to the collective 'we') in your choices and in your generosity. i have no complaints, only compliments to you on your fine taste in music and your vast knowledge on the band. thanks for all if it. caroline

So, through ESP, I'm pretty sure that copyright infringement was the reason the downloads were removed. OK. Fair enough. But simply out of pure curiosity (I swear), can anybody tell me how on the up-and-up the GD organization is about paying royalties where royalties are due. I must have close to 100 different versions of "Samson" and "Lovelight." Does the estate of Rev. Gary Davis and the still alive Bobby Bland get there due for all of these? Perhaps that's the issue. Cover royalties. Maybe GDP could offer original music as downloads and covers as streaming. In all honesty, I don't need anymore versions of "Dancing In The Streets." But another 10,000 versions of "Dark Star" or "St. Stephen"'s would be perfectly ok. And many thanks to Mr. Gans for FINALLY coming out and stating that he doesn't like the way things have been handled here. You really ARE human, after all :-/ After a week of cooling off, and laughing hysterically at some of the more humorous posts here, here's my most recent final perspective on the whole situation: What if the downloads had never been here in the first place? Would our lives still go on? Would we be any less happy? I just burned my last CD from the MP3's. Number 84. 84! 84 friggin' CD's of material I wouldn't have otherwise. 84 CD's that sound pretty great to these ears. Everybody keeps talking about how bad they sound (FLAC ... blah blah blah, digital, blah blah blah, two inch tape vs. cassette vs. DAT, blah blah blah), but have you ever been to a live show? In terms of sound, they suck. It's a miracle if you can understand the lyrics and if you still have half of your hearing the morning after. Am I nuts, or what? Oh, and I, too, apologize for being criminal by downloading all of the material FOR MY OWN PRIVATE USE. If you send me postage for the weight of 84 CD's as well as compensation for the money and time I've spent on CD-R's, labels, ink, and creating a database of the material, I'll gladly send them back to you. Sorry, that was a bit petulant. But look, I'm really glad that we've gotten this material for "free." But what other band has inspired so much devotion for so long? We are still hungry for material. Feed us! As for the posts of read concerning Jerry and "what would he think of this, blah blah blah," I'd like to point out that Jerry is dead. Let's not speculate about his opinions nor take any off the cuff remarks he may have made in interviews as gospel. He was human. His opinions probably differed from day to day like most of ours. And personally, I don't really CARE what stickers he had on his guitar or whatever. A phrase is not a philosophy. Regardless, let's just say I'm trying to "enjoy the ride," but I'm "goin' down the road feeling bad," and I "don't want to be treated this-a way" by Rhino or whoever is in control here. I want a better explanation for the downloads disappearing. And by better, I mean more specific. Because the more I read it, the more bizarre it gets.

I recently purchased the 2007 Rhino CD release: Three from the Vault. The sound quality is excellent- much better than the MP3 downloads previously offered on this site. Wharf Rat is unbelievably clear and the best version I have heard. My teenaged kids never buy a CD and only download/burn MP3s (or whatever iTunes converts them to). When I listen to their CDs or iPod, I an appalled at the poor sound quality of the music. When I can get them to listen to my store-bought CDs, they admit the sound quality is much better but still will not go out and purchase CDs themselves. If Rhino and other record companies would stress the high sound quality of CDs vs MP3s so that the kids would take note and then drop the price a little, I believe that CDs would make a comeback. Also, don't forget that the huge touring profits of GD Productions disappeared after Jerry's death. It is amazing to me that these GD services still exist, and they are the result of CD, DVD and other merchandise sales. It takes a lot of dedication for the GD staff to keep it all going. So stop bitching and purchase the music so the GD scene can continue. A Deadhead since 1971, JT (who did a lot of jumpin' at shows)

Only two comments this week. 1. Streaming does not work for me on Ubuntu Linux. I'll keep sending feedback about that. 2. I love the music. The Grateful Dead was the best damn band I ever saw. This makes being blamed for downloading the music freely offered hurts even more. Blame me for loving you guys. Blame me for coming to the site, listening to some new music. Don't blame me if I don't visit as often, and buy less. Scoobie Lay it down dirty, play it back clean.

hey david im surprised at your reaction to the downloads. sounds like your falling short of being honest to me. if this is your site, then you should have a better explanation,at least an honest one. im not mean, only dont take me for a fool. unless your retarded you knew the downloads were happening. im disappointed in you david for the lack of character your displaying. i have spend alot of money on the dead and i feel i have a voice to criticize when necessary. bottom line you all knew we were downloading,someone did not like giving the music for free so you pulled it. dont insult us david with this rap about your vision and what it was meant to be. what it was meant to be, was the way things were you got inconsiderate again.

it seems interesting that your intent is to get folks to listen to new grateful dead every week, yet you have converted them to this streaming format. I have all but abandoned this page because i simply dont have time to sit in front of my computer all day and listen to these. all you are doing by changing formats is forcing music hungry deadheads to go elsewhere to obtain these shows that are not for sale on any cd or otherwise available to us directly through the grateful dead. since the old tapes are now pretty much obsolete, these downloads have been the bread and butter of my dead collection. congratulations in doing nothing but driving us off to another archive sight. were these clips up for sale on cd, itunes or anywhere else, I would gladly purchase them all, being that i already own all the other shows that are on cd. however, back in the day, the tapes were freely traded, and just because its all gone digital, this shouldn't change things.

I can only speak for myself, once I found out about the tapers section and had the option to download it I did like most people. By doing that I was able to put the music on my mp3 player and on a CD for my truck. I have 100's of hours of Dead shows, but I've gotten away from listening to them for whatever reason the last couple of years..The tapers section renewed my interest and David was putting out some good shit too from different era's which was cool..... Now I'm or should say WAS looking forward to every Monday to see what's new that I can put on my MP3 player. I think it's a fatal mistake to give it and then take it away. It must be a legal reason or about money.. I don't know what it is and I don't care.... I just won't be here on Monday's....anymore...... Dave, shoot me an email if you go back to the mp3 format..Thanks

First some thanks: Thank you David Lemieux for all the work you have done to bring us more music. It is obvious that it is a passion for you as it is for many of us. I liked your breif insights into the tidbits left for us every Monday. Thank you David Gans for all your work bringing us more music every week over the airways. Always a pleasure no matter what station it is on. A welcome respite from the usual crap on the radio. As with the archive fiasco I see this as a problem of respect. We deadheads don't get any (or so it seems). The soundboards and the vault are not my property. You can do with them what you see fit. But it is painfully obvious that there was little, if any, consideration for the fallout from such abrupt actions (or a calculated risk and they just don't care that they piss of soo many customers - copyrights?). The loyal fan base has been purchasing almost any official release that has been put out and will continue to do so until too disgusted by the actions of the corporation. I thought the Taper Section was an attempt by Rhino to woo back the disgruntled fans and to bring in new customers for the future. And what a great tactic it was until it was ripped away. Oh well, so it goes. I also thought that most of the MP3's were not of commercial quality even if they were available in FLAC or SHN format. Nasty tape flips without other masters to splice, poor casette masters, etc. Not much that I didn't have either, but still such fun to listen to in MY CAR, not on my computer. MP3's streamable??? I thought they had to be downloaded to listen to!?!!! In the explanation by David (note that it is signed by David only, not David Lemieux - could this be a different David? Almost certainly written by somebody else and, I suspect, without all the real reasons for removal of MP3's) "Recently, I and others that work on dead.net became aware that certain fans had been regularly downloading the tracks offered in the Taper Section. Thanks again for all the work you have and will continue to do to get the music out there. I'm sorry that you both have suffered personal attacks. I hope that everybody both within and oustide the system can continue to work towards the same goal; to get the music to as many ears as possible and to keep the spirit alive in all aspects of our lives. ps no more MP3's today, but you gotta be happy that Alberto Gonzales is gone!! :)

A few things before I sign off for good. 1. After reading way too many comments over the last week there has been this back and forth about who to blame, etc. For the record, I don't think anyone ever blamed Dave. 2. Who really thought that we were clicking on the song titles and saying, "Ooh, I shouldn't download this because it's implied that we shouldn't? 3. I immediately got the feeling that Dave was not speaking through that message. 4. I don't like feeling like I am a "CERTAIN FAN"! What's with the singling out. Aren't we all fans, period. Come now, man! DL, that explanation is a pig trying desperately to fly... I think our man DL is in trouble, he's being held captive, forced to sign this ill-begotten PR jive under duress. Send in the Rescue Bears! Look, I can understand if Rhino feels the need to pull the MP3 files, for whatever reason. May not agree with it, but I can understand somebody in a suit with a briefcase full of buzzwords getting tight about it. May even be some legal shit involved for all I know. As it turns out, someone (I prefer to think a handful of misguided, cube-dwelling marketing pukes, not our man DL) came up with the bright idea that accusing the fans of bad behavior was the perfect pretext for shutting down the honey hole. Bad move. "certain fans", "The situation that developed", "Where we’re at today".... What kind of talk is this? Here's the bottom line: you published a weekly page with publicly available links to FREE MP3 files, no questions asked. And to now suggest that it's the fans' fault for actually downloading your files... I must now barf. "Downloading was never announced, described or promoted in any manner." True, but neither was it discouraged or prohibited in any manner, nor was streaming even possible up to this point (and apparently still isn't). You do realize that every time you click one of those free mp3 links, it is an HTTP GET request, which means, it's a DOWNLOAD by its very nature. There were never any streaming protocols involved... downloading WAS the only means. [insert beat dead horse image here]. What's next? Was I not supposed to click the 'Store' link and buy something? Better not look at the photos in the 'Archive' too much??? Hell, I thought the whole point of Taper's Section was that you WANTED people to come and check out the weekly selections. (BTW, let me take this moment to say THANKS, DL! for some really great commentary, have immensely enjoyed having a tour guide lead the way) Won't lose any sleep over the mp3's, and not going to bother with the streaming... But that official explanation insults mine and everyone else's intelligence to no end... In honor of this week's travesty of logic, I resolve to hoist a fresh beer, smile really big, and play Charlie Miller's latest offering really really loud. Now, bring on Dave's Faves Vol. 1, I'm still buying.

Hey, er...I'm one of those dumbasses who thought "what a cool thing, free show fragment downloads!" I hope I haven't screwed anybody up too bad. I think it's awesome the band can remix and sell whole shows on CD (and I own a bunch), but seriously, DEAD TAPES ARE FREE. (And, frankly, great for Dead business in general -- always have been, always will be.) Remember: some of these shows are partials or odd quality and would never make it to CD. Maybe we need a real taper's Taper's Section with fan tapes available for download, so the band's rich treasury of masters stays protected. Seems a little stingy, though. I've cherished these fragments, David (and Co.), and though I may come back for the occasional listen, I doubt I'll be here weekly just to peruse the jams before they're swept away the following week. Then again: if that's what it takes to keep the ship afloat, I guess I'll manage. Peace, everybody! Long Live the Dead!

David, Thanks for a real good time, while it lasted. This streaming thing is a real pain. Like a lot of others, I have all the records and CD's that have been offered. With the re-masters, I have doubles of a lot of the CD's. Here are a couple of thoughts that I have on this problem. Start the Digital Download series again! How about offering up a lossless download each week for a small cost, it seams to be all about $$$ anyway. Better yet, why don't you talk about shows on archive.org? We could download the tracks and listen along as we read about them. Figure out a way that we can listen as we read the Tapers Section. Right now I have to open up two windows and read in one and listen in the other. Thanks again for all of the music that you have already showed us. SunshineDel

I have a suggestion to keep everyone happy here. Release new CDs every couple of months and perhaps a DVD or 2 a year. Problem solved and everybody benefits. No need for streaming signals or downloads. I have purchased virtually every release since '93 except the Fillmore 10 disc box which was sold out by the time I tried to order it and would continue to do so if releases were put out more frequently. The more time between new releases only encourages fans to seek out the freebiesn.

So lame. How long can it be before those in charge of this community offer us the chance to buy some of Jerry's bone fragments? Here's a better idea: How about creating a podcast with each weeks songs, and instead of writing the blog, David adds the audio commentary in between each song. If someone really wanted to edit the podcast into individual songs, so be it, but how many would really be willing to waste all of that time? Rhino would be happy, and we could all get our tasty nuggests each week. Really a sad state of affairs.

It has always been my understanding through jerry that once the music was performed, it was alright to be copied. "Hence the huge tape trading scene" there are alot of us out there with many of these old tapes that are simply trying to update the quality that they already have..NOW the suggestion that You want us to pay a nominal fee each month for these tracks are rediculous, The GD themselves didn't take advantage of money making schemes so why is it right for you to be making money off of something you never even had production with,( yet alone put your time and creation into the making of these songs) and your excuse is so that everyone has the chance to listen to the dead?? I think you just want to be able to dictate what we listen to on a regular basis and have to be directly on your sight to do so.EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES

I did it already with some of the GD Hours that were posted as mp3s. We got almost a full disc of 7/18/90--I edited them into individual tracks and burned them onto a disc, and I'm glad I did. I usually watch these discussions and bitch sessions from the outside with mild humor and mild annoyance. I feel blessed that we have as many opportunities to get wonderful music as we do. All the DP's, download series, and aud's out there what other band provides as much for the fans as the Dead. That being said, I must jump into the fray. I am no technocrat and did nothing special to download some of the tracks provided, if I can do it anyone can. Nothing on the site stated one way or another as to the intentions of those who created it. I therefore believed I was using the site the way it was intended, sharing the love. Now had the creators changed their collective mind and decided it was too much of a good thing, fine, it is their decision and I can live with that. What makes my blood boil is being told that I am somehow to blame for this situation. You put the music out there and in a format making downloads possible. You did not say it was only for streaming. This is not an MP this is a YP. Do not make me and other fans the villans in your cluster $*&%! Good night and Good luck

i swore i would never by another commercial release when soundboards became stream only at one of the other sites and i had reconsidered once i discovered the tapers section, i was shit this is cool , sound quality is above and beyond maybe i will have to buy 3 from the vault...i got abunch of overtime got caught up on bills and then the tapers section went stream only well guess what rhino i got 3 from the vault AT THE LOCAL LIBRARY

Step back and consider the name you are using: "Taper's Section." It is reasonable to assume that Deadheads starved for music for their machines would be enticed to want to be able to record this music. Not all of us can listen when we want, or streaming from a computer. There can only be one reason you are withholding the ability to tape, and it is commercial interests, i.e., is there a way you can squeeze us or some advertisers for cash.

After years of not purchasing anything Dead related or really listening to that much Dead, this new site resulted in me listening to much more. I also purchased the Cow Palace CD. I download a few songs to my IPOD every monday and listened on my runs every Tuesday and Thursday. I have PUH-LENTY of Dead music on my harddrive that I could listen to, but I download from the site and 'stayed in the loop.' YES - I EVEN MADE A PURCHASE! You have lost a customer. What focking business school did you imbeciles go to? (Not you Dave - I appreciate your work with respect)

I am more disappointed with the reason given by David as with the actual disappearance of the mp3s. It takes a lot of gall to suggest that we "certain fans" are somehow at fault for "the situation that developed." I was so pleased at the (apparently accidental) generosity by the Dead's organization in putting up these mp3s! I even went and bought an ipod in order to best appreciate this (unintentional) kindness. The Dead and Rhino have all the right in the world to restrict soundboards, in my opinion. But this continued insulting of the fan base is uncalled for, and I think we are all owed an apology. (Maybe they can get Michael Vick to script it for them.) I'm reminded of Bobby's "what they are doing is stealing" quote during the Archive bruhaha. Maybe I will curtail my practice of buying nearly all of the commercial releases. This stinks.

I posted a comment yesterday morning, at ended up on page 5 of the comment board. In the afternoon I checked,,,,,,,,,,Hmmmmmmmmmm where is it??I checked EVERY comment today.....ITS GONE, BEEN REMOVED!! It went something like this: David knew exactly knew what he was doing, thats why he was posting so many songs. Then someone from management was looking over his shoulder "Hmmmmmmmmmm Mp3's you cant do that!!" Hope you did not get in any trouble by posting mp3's David. Thanks for getting away with it this long. As for streaming, never liked, never will. I would be willing to pay a FEW bucks for a high quality show of my choice. So just post all the shows and have us pay for the ones we want............That is the plan, right?? Thanks again David for getting away with it this long Now lets see if this comment go's away. Gary

rambling random thoughts... hmmm...The first part of that letter almost sounds like it's a letter directed to Rhino - not to us. It's almost reads like the folks at dead.net got busted for posting .mp3s and are trying to say they didn't know about it. Downloading? Really? We had no idea! We never implied that it was a download site. We didn't know they could do that! We'll fix that right away! If the letter really was written for us - it's a bit insulting. We're not fools. Starbucks...get over it. Like it or not Starbucks is a viable venue for selling cds these days. Rhino is marketing a product and trying to attract new customers. I certainly don't blame them for that. At least it's not a Wal-Mart-only exclusive cd. In general I actually like what Rhino has been doing (other than this). I love what they did with the reissues of The Cure, Ramones, X and, yes, even the GD studio catalog. My bet is that they're just treating us the way they'd treat any other fanbase. If nothing else, they need to learn that we're a different beast. We can be mindlessly dedicated, but we can also be incredibly vocal when we feel something isn't right. Lets see...Are people really willing to put out money to download a handful of .mp3's every week? I doubt it. Maybe a few of you, but it seems to me that once you start charging money, the rules and attitudes change. I'll bet downloads drop 90%+ if they start charging even $5/month. I'm sure some people will pay it. I'll just bet most won't. I'm not saying that's right or wrong, or that we're "entitled" to anything. That's just my guess on how things will go. I loved the mp3s. I didn't download them all - just a handful of the ones I thought would be interesting. Some I kept. Some I didn't. I was never disappointed though. It was enough to keep me coming back every week . I listened at the gym, in the car, by the pool....rarely while sitting at my computer at home. As for the streaming, I simply can't do it at work. It's not allowed. I tried it from home and it didn't work on my Linux box anyway. Even if it worked, after sitting at a computer all day the last thing I want to do is sit at my home computer all night, just so I can listen to some music. The hacks/software mentioned to download the streams? Too much time and effort when I can go elsewhere, click a few times and have some new music. It's just not going to happen, and I imagine that's the case for most people. We'll just go elsewhere. David+David aren't to blame for any of this. If anything, I give DG props for stepping into the middle of this mess, knowing he'd take the heat for something he's not really responsible for. I'm sure DL's hands are tied and he can only say/do certain things. That's the way the real world works sometimes. Don't kill the messengers. Enough hinting at "things to come" from Rhino. Bring it. The '76 release was interesting. the '71 release was tepid, at best. Enough promises. Let's go. I can't buy it if you don't release it. Enough. I'll stop.

I'm sorry, but you do not call a section the "taper's section" and not expect people to "tape" a few nuggets. This is nothing but Monday morning quarterback on the part of Rhino. and the blame, as well, should rest squarely on the shoulders of Rhino. Any of you that wants to can capture any of these streams on your hard drive if you can figure it out...so maybe you have to work at it a little harder, and maybe it must be captured in "real time"...but it is still a pleasure to have some of these unheralded nuggets...I hope I haven't blown it for everyone by saying how easy it is to convert these to wav or mp3 on your own...figure it out... Let's face it, the mp3 version of taper's section was a virtual goldmine, so where's the gratitude to David Lemieux for delivering all the goodies to the community? Just take a bow, brethren and sistren, show some respect. Now it's all over, and we can start to sort out the stuff, enjoy it and basically: IF YOU GET CONFUSED, LISTEN TO THE MUSIC PLAY. Personally, I believe that the section has been the ultimate explanation of "the dead experience", the perfect introduction for the newcomer in terms of understanding this long, strange trip. And honestly, we've all got tons and tons of GD-music, in my case I felt slightly relieved when it all came to an end. Let's just value this tremendous effort one more time. Thank you, David!

Someone mentioned how many CDs he/she burned from tracks downloaded from here (I think it was 84?). Does anyone know how many tracks were offered in total? I think I have 374.
