    MSG 87
This night we got the Watchtower tease before Black Peter, Wednesday Night we got the GDTRFB Closing Jam before the Black Muddy encore. Which led up to Friday nights show and the smoking Second Set. What a great run of 5 shows in six days this was at MSG. Next year we had King Kong join us at MSG, that was so cool walking down 7th avenue and seeing the 30 foot Kong in a Tye-dye at the entrance to MSG.

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, and Happy Holidays! This week we've got some decidedly non-Holiday music, but good stuff nonetheless.

Our first stop this week is in the first leg of the Fall Tour of 1973, which ran from September 7 through December 19. From 9/17/73 in Syracuse, we have a six songs, five of which would appear on Wake Of Flood, to be released on October 15: Mississippi Half-Step, Let Me Sing Your Blues Away, Truckin'>Eyes Of The World>Weather Report Suite>Stella Blue.

Next is music from 8/29/83 in Eugene, Oregon, where we have the end of the first set and the start of the second set, featuring some high-octane Dead: Bird Song, It's All Over Now, Might As Well, China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider.

Lastly this week is the end of the show from 9/15/87 at Madison Square Garden, the Grateful Dead's return to MSG after four years away: Space>The Wheel>Gimme Some Lovin'>Black Peter>Sugar Magnolia, It's All Over Now Baby Blue.

Be sure to join us next week for more music from the vault.

I attended that 9/17/73 show in Syracuse. I thought it was just OK as Dead shows went at that time, but I was highly indignant about that horn player, who I thought utterly destroyed everything he played on. Now that I hear this again, looking back, I was right. It sucks. At the time I thought the Dead needed a horn like a moose needs a hat rack. I have since heard other horns playing with them (Marsalis, Clemmons) who did it well, but this guy is just noise. I guess musicians like Jerry and Phil hear something in it I don't.

Agree with SaintSteveg. Mid-Truckin' at this point and can't stand the horns. Don't know how many horn players are in this show, but one of them (less experienced, maybe) keeps rudely butting in, totally detracting from the jam. Hope it gets better in the rest of this selection. Marsalis and Clemmons are a whole different league.

Too bad Let Me Sing didn't evolve.. Might have had an interesting arrangement in the '77-'78 era. I dig that chorus. Though Keith's vocals are not very strong. The sax sounds O.K. on this track, it's cool the Dead were always willing to break out of the standard in the first half of the 70s and try something different. Anyway, this was my first listen of Let Me Sing Your Blues Away live. Reminds me of how much I freaked over Wake of the Flood when I bought the CD years ago as a youngster. Now I'm listening to Truckin'... The horns do suck on this one. When they subside though, Jerry blisters a killer solo with Keith doing some weirdo ambient synth sounds. I like it. Happy Holidays! Get outside and play that Dead music!

1973 was a rich year, so there are plenty of transcendental performances from this period without having to rationalize that Jerry's solos compensate for the honk-blat-hank-blat buzzkill that warps every one of these horn shows. Nice try boys, but these can go to the back of the vault with a Mr. Yuk sticker on the box.

The first selection cuts off in the middle of "Eyes of the World." I'd love to hear Weather Report Suite and Stella Blue.
