Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we check out some Grateful Dead music from 1969, 1972 and 1984 as we roll into August, passing Jerry's birthday as we go.
Our first stop this week is on 7/3/69 in Colorado Springs, CO, where the Dead were playing as part of their summer run of shows. From this show we have Hard To Handle, He Was A Friend Of Mine, Lovelight, including one of the best versions of He Was A Friend Of Mine I've ever heard. Please note this was drawn from the cassette master, as there is no known reel of this performance.
From three years later, we have music from 9/15/72 at the Boston Music Hall, the first of two nights in Boston. From this mighty fine show, we have He's Gone, Me and My Uncle, Bird Song, Mexicali Blues, Ramble On Rose. These shows were originally scheduled to take place at SPAC in Saratoga Springs, NY, but the town decided against hosting two nights of the Grateful Dead, and it would be 11 years before the Dead debuted at SPAC.
Lastly this week, from 6/29/84 in Akron, OH, we have Scarlet Begonias>Touch Of Grey>//Dear Mr. Fantasy>Man Smart (Woman Smarter). This sequence of Scarlet>Touch would precede the more famous 7/13/84 version, which of course would then segue into Fire On The Mountain. There is a cassette cut at the start of Dear Mr. Fantasy, which debuted only two weeks earlier on 6/14/84 at Red Rocks.
Be sure to join us here next week. More tunes from the vault coming up.
