    March 4 - March 10, 2013

Welcome back to the Tapers' Section, where this week we'll check out music from 1970, 1971 and 1989

New Year's Eve 1969-1970 saw the Grateful Dead performing their only New Year's show outside of California, in Boston. Two days later, the Dead played a couple of terrific shows at the Fillmore East in New York City, and from the first of those shows, on 1/2/70, we have the big jam, the Live/Dead sequence of Dark Star>St. Stephen>The Eleven>Lovelight. Please note that there the master reel changes at the end of Dark Star/beginning of St. Stephen, so you'll hear that.

A year later, the Grateful Dead were opening a six night run at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on 2/18/71, a show that would turn out to be Mickey's last show with the Dead for more than three years. From this show, we have Casey Jones, Playing In The Band, Me and Bobby McGee, Candyman, Big Boss Man, Sugar Magnolia. That's the first-ever live Grateful Dead version of Playing In The Band.

The four-night New Year's run in 1989 included loads of great music, and from the opening of the second set on the second night, 12/28/89, we have Foolish Heart>Looks Like Rain>Eyes Of The World. Every night of this run was filled with some monumental playing, a precursor to the excellence of Spring 1990 a couple of months later.

Be sure to stop by next week for more great tunes from the vault.

    Cool
You just can't go wrong with the combination of words and numbers...Grateful Dead Fillmore East 1970. For some reason, the '71 Port Chester shows, to me, have always seemed kind of mediocre. I don't dislike them, but they are never the first shows I pull of of the shelf either. New Years '89-'90 = EPIC Maybe I'm just pickier than the average Deadhead, but in '89, the Dead became more than mere mortals. They were rock gods. Gimme more!!!

Ahhh a Saturday here! Now filled with bliss from every good day that was good from then; all for this day to be it too. Love and appreciation, xo "In the letters..." Lyrics By: Robert Hunter Music By: Jerry Garcia Carve your name, carve your name in ice and wind Search for where, search for where the rivers end Or where the rivers start Do everything that's in you, you feel to be your part But never give your love my friend unto a foolish heart Unto a foolish heart Dare to leap, leap from ledges high and wide Learn to speak, speak with wisdom like a child Directly to the heart Crown yourself the king of clowns or stand way back apart But never give your love my friend unto a foolish heart Unto a foolish heart Shun a friend, shun a brother and a friend Never look, never look around the bend Or check the weather chart Sign the Mona Lisa with a spray can, call it art But never give your love my friend unto a foolish heart Unto a foolish heart A foolish heart will call on you to toss your dreams away Then turn around and blame you for the way you went astray A foolish heart will cost you sleep and often make you curse A selfish heart is trouble, but a foolish heart is worse Bite the hand, bite the hand that bakes your bread Dare to leap, where the angels fear to tread Till you are torn apart Stoke the fires of paradise with coals from hell to start But never give you love my friend unto a foolish heart Unto a foolish heart

Man, I have heard clips of 89 here that have made my jaw drop! No mere mortals were they, thundering from on high! It must have been a great time to be in the band. I know that the shows I saw that year are very memorable for their power. The show at Pitt. Civic Arena with the double encore comes to mind, the whole show being consistently awesome!

Rising from the Sweetwater blissmy eyes are slow to focus and my brain still cozy in my otherwise empty skull. I saved the '71 NYer for this very minute. Point click, point click, point click mmmmm... sigh. I will have to hit the '70 again later as it was sacred karma to my soul. I've always loved the wildness of Pigpen and how Bobby has mirrored that since he checked out. To this day I still talk his jive and will never stop. Did you forget to get your hands OUT your pockets? If you did ---------> Get Your Hands Out Your Pockets!!!!! It's Tuesday and everyone should have sex on Tuesday because it's Tuesday! ----------------------------(-----@ ------------------------------(------@ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Why, you can't be angry after an orgasm.

Mmmmmmmm, Harmonica Baby! Ah let me think in the other part... that's empty. ahhhh Gently finding a wilder-side groove, in the air..."come and play everything is a okay." What a find! I think the words harmonica and soul mean the same thing, or they should...and I have never heard a harmonica I didn't like. It's a sacred mind set. Let what is great be great. Excellent.

Dave, et. al., Finally a selection w/ pigpen, we can clearly hear his organ chops! I never understood why jerry was always mixed up while others where mixed down. By hearing the Pigpen/ garcia interplay in dark star, the listener can listen to the collaborative chaos of it all. In any future dave's pick or other pre73 release, it would be wonderful to remix pigpens organ @ a higher audio level. We all know jerry is the engine & drivetrain, its nice to hear the wheels once in a while. The parts make up the whole. the wave contains the sound note, & the sound note is in the wave.
