    Boxed and Ready to Go!

Sound the imperial trumpets! Bang the drum! Pop that champagne! Another Grateful Dead box set is comin’ your way! Yes, in the grand tradition of the beloved Fillmore West 1969 and Winterland 1973 boxes, comes Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD box set that is sure to knock your tie-dyed socks off.

At this point, we probably don’t need to hype you on the glories of ’77 Dead. It was a magical time for the band, which was reinvigorated by a plethora of great new material—“Terrapin,” “Estimated Prophet,” “Passenger,” “Fire on the Mountain”—and really hitting its stride again following the October ’74 to June ’76 performing hiatus. The group spent much of the first three months of 1977 recording their Terrapin Station album with producer Keith Olsen, and Garcia also managed to find time to complete the much-anticipated Grateful Dead movie (which opened June 1, 1977). The third week of April, the band embarked on what most Dead Heads agree was one of the greatest tours ever: 26 concerts in the East and Midwest in a little over a month—an awesome stretch that produced so many great shows, a few of them already released in the Dick’s Picks series and subsequently (and more, no doubt, destined to come out down the road.)

So when the Dead returned to San Francisco’s Winterland for shows on June 7, 8, 9, they were pumped up and feeling good! They treated their hometown fans to three superb concerts that included excellent versions of much of their current repertoire, from the new combo of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire on the Mountain,” to a truly colossal, more than 30-minute “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower,” “Saint Stephen,” “Terrapin,” “Good Lovin’,” “Not Fade Away,” “The Other One”… too many favorites to mention (you can see the complete song lists here). Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings contains every note recorded from the three shows, more than nine hours of prime Dead, all taken from the master analog tapes, restored using the Plangent Processes, and mastered in HDCD by that inimitable sonic tweakster, Jeffrey Norman.

The nine discs are packaged in a beautifully designed box that includes artwork by Emek (you loved his crazy Winterland ’73 phantasmagoria); a 28-page booklet featuring a wonderful and illuminating new essay by Rolling Stone senior music editor David Fricke (who dubs this a “box of paradise and circus… six complete sets of inspired risk and collective explosion”); lots of great Winterland action shots by noted GD shutterbugs Ed Perlstein and Bruce Polonsky; and a couple of little pieces of period memorabilia we won’t reveal here.

clicking here. We know you’re gonna dig it! And rest assured, there’s plenty more where this came from: We know you love the box sets; well, we do, too!

    $105 and no booklet?
Maybe this seems trivial, but it's not to me. After spending $105 and change for this set, it arrived without the 28 page booklet. I emailed customer service with a nice message on October 28 and have heard nothing to date. Nothing. Perhaps I should just attempt to return the set in it's entirety? Would that get their attention? Do they respond to anybody? About anything? After dozens of years and thousands upon thousands of dollars of merchandise, I may have finally reached my the end with GDM/Rhino.

While a new boxset would probably more exciting (and I'm expecting a boxset release in early 2011 if the current rate continues) it would be pretty fantastic to re-release the Fillmore West 1969 boxset somehow:1. Downloads (with cover art - and by the way, where have the Download Series releases in the store gone?) 2. In the packaging of the 73 and 77 Winterland sets (i.e. the less "deluxe" packaging than the original release). 3. Individual show releases over the course of a few years. I don't know. It wouldn't hurt. It's a pretty spectacular release - 16-track recording, 4 full shows at the Fillmore West in Feb and Mar 1969. I'd say you'd sell plenty of you re-released it.

Would kinda be a breach of contract, and trust with customers.I was lucky enough to get it, but lotsa people were left out.Maybe a download version would be the way to go to get this out...The prices of Fillmore West 69 on ebay is just crazy, but then again..lotsa things are crazy there. I think we are gonna see another Jerry release before Yuletide, as well as a new Road Trips. I am drooling for a Autumn 73 one, but we will see...all good things comes to those who wait..;-)) Peace And Love Oddleif

there are currently 98 available downloads in the Store. They're here. Click the Download tab. These are for the most part download versions of commercial releases, e.g. the Dick's Picks, but also the spring Dead tour etc. As I understand it the list will keep growing.

The Winterland June '77 box can be bought from third-party sellers on Amazon.com - new for $250 or if you can't afford that, you can have it used (pre-owned!) for a mere $220. Is that bizarre?

What's bizarre is that they actually got copies of it. :-) Still waiting for mine... I bet I'll get the Kindle I ordered yesterday before I get the Winterland box.

Yep - most of the downloads that used to be there are there again. It's only the thirteen volumes of the Download Series that are missing. It would be a shame if they didn't return. There's some good stuff there that I'm intending on buying (eventually).

Like Ben, I sincerely hope the download series releases are made available again. There were some cool shows that I really want -- most notably that double-shot from '89. I got most of them but there were 3 or 4 of those releases I never got a chance to get -- if they show up again I'll grab them. Any word on those, Marye? And my box set is fantastic!

So how about offering as a download, or for old-school individuals like me who like CDs, artwork, etc, please release a “standard” version that makes it stand apart from the original “limited” release, but please leave the complete concerts intact. eBay is out of control, there are vendors trying to sell Dick's Picks at outrageous prices, for example $75 for Vol 12, $50 for Vol 18, etc. Once in a while I also see sellers tag some of the Dick’s Picks as Out-Of-Print (OOP), which is completely a deceptive practice, fishing for uninformed buyers. I challenged a seller once on an OOP posting for Vol 33 where he was looking to get $99. His response to me was that “Per David Gans and David Leimieux, the Dick's Picks series is no longer going to be produced, the volume will be 36 (and they would know better than anyone)”. I informed him that the “Dick’s Picks” titling is no longer being used for future releases, but all 36 volumes are still being offered at dead.net for more reasonable prices. Val

Wanted to give a public shout out of gratitude to Marye and Meggan for helping get my Winterland 77 box to me bonus disc and all. I placed my order the second it hit the site. Long wait began...and waiting...and finally "damn where is this box!"...two calls to customer service and still not having received my discs by 10/16, I PM'd Marye. Lo and behold, here it is 10/21 and I have my discs at last! Thanks so much Marye and Meggan.

Got the box meanwhile, everything sounds great - though nothing really new - thanks a lot for this release anyway and please keep them coming - whole runs, single shows, road trips, dvds and - yeah! - downloads.By the way: what ever happened to that road trips-full show-downloads-concept you started last year with two shows from 1979???? Another very, very annoying topic: had to pay for the box $126,76 incl. shipping and tax. And then more than 45 Euro over here in Germany, nearly $70 more for postal fees and customs. So asking you urgently to alter your delivery method!!! best regard

alas, UPS does seem to be doing this and if you choose UPS as your delivery method this will happen and we can't do anything about it. Therefore, in the future, it's better to go with USPS.

I think the UPS charges fiasco started when the store - for some time after the initial release of the box - listed the shipping prices (to Europe) as $22.50 for "Rush" shipping and something over $100 for "Normal" shipping. Of course, the "Normal" shipping charge had (as Marye said at the time) nothing to do with any known reality. Naturally, everyone chose "Rush". Subsequently I think the store tried to do the decent thing and issued a refund ($10.50) for the difference between "Rush" and the real "Normal" shipping charge ($12) but sent the orders "Rush" (= UPS) so that everyone got it as quickly as possible and those who really wanted "Rush" shipping would have no reason to complain. Unfortunately this backfired somewhat as nobody seemed to realise that UPS are a bunch of thieves. How can anyone justify charging twice for the same delivery - and not state that at the time of ordering. They seem to justify this by claiming to to present the package to customs who then levy import duty on top of that. Customs duty is common on packages of this sort of price and all packages pass through customs. Sometimes they levy the charge, sometimes they don't - it depends on the country and the value of the package. I have the idea that the store are innocent here - and UPS are guilty as hell. Still, now we all know what will happen in the future if we choose "Rush" shipping to get our desired goods a few days earlier. UPS = U Poor Sucker.

dearest marye, thanks for your immediate answer, really! but trying to order the newest double release I found only two options: standard $ 12,74 and rush $ 22,50, so I voted for standard and just hoping now for the best. by the way: no free shipping, nothing at all for overseaers????

The Fillmore West box set isn't selling for $1000 on ebay...that was just one jerk's BIN price. No one used it.The first bid price, which was ignored by all as well, was $700. As someone who called to pre-order only to hear they JUST sold the last one, I feel pissed at some money-grubbing prick trying to rip off a Deadhead...that should have been my box set, 'cause I'd NEVER sell it on ebay, no matter the price. I even called them back and begged them to make a list with my name on it...'cause they said they didn't have one...for when some of the credit card orders weren't approved.... which always happens....so I could get one then. They wouldn't do it, then a week or so later released an email saying call them, there were a few left. Of course people who aren't online every minute due to work or having a family had no chance then, and yes I phoned when I got home only to be told they were sold out again...that was like kicking someone when they're down, considering I'd begged them to start a list encompassing the people who called immediately after it sold out....timing wise, they deserved to get the extra ones that came available. As you can tell, years later I'm still pissed about the whole thing. I miracled tickets at shows when I had extra cash, and sold them for face or slightly less when I needed cash, even desperately...but I guess those days of Deadheads trying to be fair with each other has gone out the window? I guess it doesn't help when you have everyone in the band but Lesh whining about losing money to people downloading soundboards, and yet, they release a "crown jewel" box set as a limited edition, ensuring some of us can't have it either way. Sorry for the rant, but maybe I'm not the only one who feels this way? First show: July 4th 1986, Rich Stadium. Last show: July 6th 1995, Riverport Amphitheatre

... is a heck of a lot of money. It's pretty tempting no matter what. But I agree that making a limited edition was just plain stupid. I really think they were afraid it wouldn't sell.

The outrageous selling practices on eBay is one of the reasons I wish that dead.net would consider modifying their cheap “bonus” disc marketing ploy and begin to shutdown the individuals who continue to buy up releases early, for the sole purpose of attempting to reap outrageous profits. As I mentioned in a previous post, the Grateful Dead have a very dedicated fan base which translates into a solid consumer base for the products offered by the dead.net store. The “bonus” disc should be a permanent part of each release. Initiate each release by offering a special price for a limited time, and then increase the price by $5 or so. I wouldn’t mind if the initial price was $19.95 and then went to $24.95 as long as I had the option to buy the “full” package. Not everyone can always afford to buy each release out of the gate, but many would love to have the option to buy the complete release when the timing is right. I challenge the powers to be at dead.net to give my suggested strategy a try with one of the upcoming releases and see how it works out financially compared to your current strategy. I know that it would be a win for the Grateful Dead consumers, but my guess is it would also be a win-win situation for both dead.net, as well as the Grateful Dead consumers. “May the four winds blow you safely home” Val

Here's a summary of the problems folks have posted with this box set: Disc 2 Scarlet Begonias -- Jerry’s voice is lost in the mix from 1:06 to ~1:22, some crackling around 1:13. Disc 3 Uncle John's Band -- skip @ 9:15 Disc 5 Bertha -- glitch around the 1 minute mark. Disc 6 = Disc 1 There is a similar issue on the beginning of “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” on the bonus disc – Jerry sounds like he is in a cave (heavy reverb) from 0:13 to 0.29, then his voice is brought up properly in the mix after that. CAN WE GET LEMIEUX AND NORMAN TO RESPOND --- ARE THEY MASTER TAPE ISSUES?....UNFIXABLE WITH AUDIENCE PATCHES?....OR ARE THEY TRULY MASTERING PROBLEMS (THE 2 SKIPS/GLITCHES) THAT SHOULD BE FIXED AND RE-ISSUED DOES RHINO HAVE THESE GUYS MUZZLED ???

I've listened to half the tunes so far; I'm up to the end of the first set of 6/8. (I've also listened to the bonus disc.) Great stuff, really solid playing (though there's one Sunrise, which always makes me think I've got the wrong music on). Highly recommended. So what'll the next box be? I want to see a lot of Europe 72... Or a Pigpen special.

Europe '72. I've said it before and I'll say it again - Amsterdam + Rotterdam - Holland '72 on 8 discs. Assuming they got the goods (both shows, complete) in the vault with sufficient quality. That said, there is a whole lot more fine Europe '72 stuff that has yet to see the light of day officially. A fair bit has already come out - but not recently. Also a Pigpen special on Road Trips.

Yes thats right!!! The box is still coming with the bonus disc!! I ordered yesterday on 11-10-09 had the box sent overnight figuring i wasn't going to get the bonus disc and today i get home open it up and the bonus disc is inside!!! My guess is that when the box first came up for sale that so many people had problems with the ordering process as we are all aware!! That there are still box sets with the bonus cd because so many people could not place an order!! I called the phone number and ordered that way!! The guy on the phone said the bonus cd is no longer available! But i dont think he knew how many were left not sold!! If you want this with the bonus cd now is the time to order!!!!

Hey Now! I received the Winterland June 77 boxed set in October. I was away a lot and didn't realize until November that discs 7 and 8 are unplayable. I just had my third customer service conversation with some guy in India trying to get replacement discs. I've twice been promised that the replacements discs would be sent; that the issue was being escalated, but when I call back, there is no record of the previous calls. There was also no supervisor available to speak with. This is very frustrating. Is there another way to resolve this? It seems from the comments there were plenty of problems with these discs. Any helpful comments on how to receive playable discs would be welcomed. Have a peaceful day! Cheryl

I ordered Winterland June '77 the other day from dead.net (first time). Today I find this thread with references to ordering snafus, bad & missing discs, booklets etc. I know that a forum like this generally only attracts people that experienced problems but I am now a little apprehensive and wonder if these issue have been resolved. So far I have not received any shipping notification so I guess it is not too late to cancel my order. I just don't want to received a $100+ headache.
