"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Head on over to Rollingstone.com for the very first listen of "Morning Dew" 9/18/87 Madison Square Garden, David Fricke's exclusive interview with archivist David Lemieux, and the reveal of 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN's '69 and '84 shows.

*Helpful hints for using your USB:

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

This Grateful Dead original is as tasty as a fresh morning bun here. Jerry barks the words with great conviction even though he apparently was not happy with the poetry. Sometimes all you gotta do is sell it, and he knows just how to do that, even at this early stage. The odd time changes are maneurvered expertly and the song is a rousing success. A victory lap is called for and Garcia whips up a guitar froth that goes on for a good, jammy time while (I hope) the dancers frug to their hearts’ content. First Jerry, then Billy chops the time in half and drops back to 4/4 soon after. Jer wants to stretch out still. Pigpen's organ stabbing gets louder, to the point of some distraction. The self-made fade at the end is like watching steam dissipate. It's another winner.

Sigh. See, you should have ordered the USB. Then you could be on pins and needles the next 30 days and might have gotten lucky! Now when did you feel that way and hopeful for the holidays since you were a kid! But then again, if we are still waiting, you still did better. And NO - I DO NOT WANT TO CANCEL!!! I just want what I paid for or an update. And if I can't get an update, but sometime in the next 12 months will actually get what I paid for months ago, I will take it. And no, I do not resent those of you who got the box. I truly am happy for you - others suffering does not alleviate mine, but knowing others are happy (if supportive) does ease mine. And it sounds like a blast to listen to. Just hope I get to someday - and feel that making the point here now and then is my right. Not directed at you who have the music, just the off chance that being shamed in public makes someone at Rhino try to do better.

Well, after several listens through the box, I finally have found out one bad thing. What could anybody possibly get me for Xmas that will hold a candle to this box? The bloom is certainly off the rose for me this year. Boxzilla is just SO amazing that I am afraid I will have to wait for Xmas 2016 to receive any present that will really spin my top. Rock on

WOW. I didn't listen to the streams and have a random listening pattern so it takes a while to hear new stuff. This Trip was great, a perfect choice and the 1st of the box shows i heard. I literally had to turn around and look at the monitor to find out WTF it was. Similar in feel to the 5/6/70 Kresge Plaza show at MIT where they crank the whole set knowing they don't have another set to worry about. The Other One is intense, the Lovelight NFA closer is as good as the Minglewood from 5/15/70 when Bob shreds his vocal chords in the give and take with Pigpen. It's a nice choice for the box, short but it's the whole ride from start to end.

Honestly, I'm posting to see if my new photo shows up. Ha. But while I'm here, let me say to the USB crowd that I feel a portion of your pain. My box arrived very late and there was no reason given in advance, even though the reason was a shipping label SNAFU. They could have just told us that, and instead they chose to let us guess. Adding further tragicomedy, I just received my shipping notice. It came about 4 weeks after the actual box arrived. So hang in there, brethren. It's a mess but I have confidence it will be straightened out in the end. You'll love the tunes. The time lapse morph from pimply garage band to lumbering behemoth collapsing under its own weight is a wonder to behold in all of its audio splendor. The stops along the way are priceless.

greetings from here, so, my cat loves the grateful dead. he's now listened to a good chunk of the trips box set. in fact, he's the one who wanted it. i covered for him though, i don't want my wife to get too suspicious. he's got a habit, and i enable him. but habits are habits. he would have found someone else to indulge his needs, so i thought. it was a surprise when he left the room during the cornell '81 althea though. he loves the spring 90 box he wanted me to get for him, so why would he walk on that song, that show? i couldn't figure it out. he's listened to a lot, and he makes a statement now? the only thing i can think of is that i've had to revisit that show a few times, and maybe he wants to move on. i could understand it if that was the case, but why not walk out on the me and my uncle (nothing against it personally)? we're all different, just have to accept it. i don't see how i could change, nor why would i want to? everyone of us here's something different, through a neural network of experiences and genetics. i can get him back in the room though. he's a sucker for black muddy river. i know just the encore. i think i've talked myself through this little therapy session. thanks for listening.

I'm holding out hope that the eight charges to my card disappear quick so I can get a legit order in. Looks like somewhere between 4950-5000 units still available plus my eight and god knows how many others in the same banana boat. I'm holding back how I really feel but one can only wonder WTF is going on! It's 2015 people. Crashing crap websites, non confirmation and spinning wheels. Very professional. I do want to give a shout out though for the CS rep I spoke to twice. Nice guy and helpful.

I won't be buying it either. This box set is a big huge joke to me cuz they basically put out a box set that only rich dead heads can afford. I had high hopes for the 50th anniversary and this box set is a slap in the face. I was hoping for non limited releases that would be in stock so everyone could enjoy the music well hasnt happened yet. i would have to say that the 50th anniversary has so far been a huge letdown and joke.

Waited an hour - nothing processed. So abandoned the order (yikes!) and started again. It took 30 secs second time round. Now where is the money coming from?

Has anyone ever bought something close to this on a USB?I debated that version but went with the CDs for a few reasons. I was wondering if the files might go bad at some point. It would take a lot of space to back up.

I will be buying this box and selling full shows from 1976 - 1995 separately at $50 dollars a piece. Seems like a fair price considering what Dave's Picks are going for on ebay etc. PM me if interested with the individual show or shows & I will respond to let you know if they have already sold. First come first serve. 1966-1975 shows will not be for sale. This is not a scam. Just hoping to recoup some of the damage this box will cost me while helping others get some long sought after shows without going for the whole box. I will not raise my price ($50 dollars per full show - flat rate) & will ship them out as soon as I get the box. Sincerely -CJ

Shouldn't be charged any shipping for the USB or the CD box. The $50+ extra is tax if you're one of the six or seven states with that internet sales tax. (Never had one in Jersey back in 2011 when the Europe box came out-makes a big difference on something like this.)

If this seems like a lot of money now what will full sets go for on eBay, yuk. Took a long time to order and two calls to customer help listening to 20 mins of awful music while in the queue, can't they at least play something more appropriate, "I Can't get no satisfaction" would be appropriate or "I Need A Miracle". The reps were friendly and understanding, so good on them considering the millions(?) of irate calls they must have been receiving. Gotta feel for people who really can't justify the cost of this, hope the next 'big' release (next year presumably - there is a limit to what we can afford) scales back to more accessible box sets in terms of price. At this rate i'm going to have to sell the Ferrari or change sex and appear on Vanity Fair like the bloke down the road.

Got home from work, placed the order, confirmed. I am NOT rich, but I saved in preparation for this day and received welcome assistance from my loved ones so I had a credit card to use. It's the GD, ya gotta make magic happen! What is it,9.00 a cd? Come on! This is gonna be nuts!

That does seem like a fair rate, a few shows during that period maybe 2 disc, Now that the ordering fiasco has taken place, its time to get back to the music and the meat of the box. One question did anybody hear 10.20.68 on Sirius yesterday ? Death Dont Have No Mercy had a majot cut near the middle. This show is included, so I am wondering if they are going to patch or leave it be ? And any chance for a Matrix ? I know Dave mention the 2-tracks and a couple Multi-track. Some folks may get lucky with sharing stories or artwork that wil be included. That is why I am guessing they wanted all those fan submissions because they knew what shows they were going to use and I am sure they needed some ammo for a lot of these shows that were heavily requested over the years. And for Future Dave's Picks since 10.20.68 made a super random appearance on Sirius Today in GDhistory yesterday. Today's randomness was 12.13.80... A nice bonus disc for 12.13.80 would be the Acoustic set from 12.6.80 if a soundboard emerges.

For my money, I bet this does not sell out. That's a lot of disposable income, and a lot of folks already spent theirs on the Fare Thee Well shows. But my money just bought this instead of that. I love it because it's such a monster. So audacious. There is nothing like it. I have a 28-CD Sun Ra box but that's all from one 1980-81 residency in Detroit. The only question of import now is: How many copies will shrewd investors like mayormarionberry and brianhane buy?

Why is it that they can have 2 major screw ups this year with the tix and then screw up again. Oh well after letting it process for 4 hours I shut it down redid it and got a confirm number in 10 seconds. Yeah save the money on the customer service that can answer nothing and put it to IT. On the other hand at least their putting out something worth having. The people that are complaining must not know how to save it's been coming for a year. No I doubt that we are rich just know what we want and will put off other non essential purchases like a bag of weed or 2 LOL

a few days ago, I am considering buying an extra and then listing it right before they announce the last GD release ever. If i am around that long. Some of these years may never see another official release like 1995, I would bet it sells for Double when it hits ebay after Dead.net has finished processing orders. Just for the record my everlasting processing order, i just clicked off. Thanks customer service for the tip to not refresh or click off. I will remember that next time.

Several of these releases - especially the '73, '74, '75, and '79 shows shouldn't cost $700 and be limited to 6500 pressings. Ridiculous. I was really hoping they'd be Dave's Picks instead, but now they're priced out of reach. I hope the plan to keep individual shows away from fans will be reconsidered. If not, this is just a shameful money grab. My guess is that several hundred will be sold on amazon by Bears season ticket holders. >(

My older went through a couple of hours ago. Price is fairly steep down under with the exchange rate bring it to just under $1000 in my currency. But obsessives must have it all and I will have a few months to put the money aside. I hope the presentation will be up to the usual inventive standard.Never saw a show but listen most days to something.

Forgot the other important part of my day. I wanted to start the with some Winterland 77, tipped the box set upside down on accident and out pops the bonus disc. It had been hiding under the card board and movie ticket on the bottom of the box for a couple of years....lucky me! Found a bonus disc I didnt know I had and then spent close to 1500 on the cat and a box set....funny day

Firstly, congrats to me for correctly predicting the exact format of the 50th Anniversary Box Set (i.e. one show representing each year of GD permorming history). I think a few other posters had similar thoughts. Anyway, all that matters is this is happening and I am incredibly f-ing excited! Every show is going to be smoking...especially the pre-hiatus stuff (and the '75 show), the early '80s and the '89 show...and my favorite attended show (3/27/93). Heck, every show is a damn must hear/have! Secondly, you can add 4 extra copies to WharfratWhitey's 8 copies that may be locked up and eventually put back into the available pool. Gee...what a mess this afternoon. I have no idea what to expect regarding the "pending charges" on my credit card. I guess I'll wait to see if they disappear. Customer Service was pretty weak, unfortunately. I feel a bit bad for them, as the nice lady I spoke with certainly tried to care/help. Now, with all these career-spanning releases coming out in 3+ months, what will be released as the next Dave's Picks? Later folks!

They kept telling me to re-order, so I did. Eventually my funds were depleted entirely, and I have no money left to buy a set. I have $3K in money I can't access in my bank because of this little computer stunt / customer service shortcoming of theirs, and they can't even reserve a copy for me, until my funds that THEY WON'T RELEASE becomes available in my bank account, anywhere from 12 hours to 6 days from now. Classy organization all the way. Unbelievable that they're not prepared for this. Some of the choices seem weak. 1973 - extension of WL Box set + DaP 5. Nothing new here. 1972 - extension of DP 23, 36, 11. Nothing new here 1977 - hmmm. Well, Cornell, Boston, or Buffalo would have been nice. What I think I'm getting is Download Series '77 part II. 1978 - extension of DP 25 And I don't even like Brent. Maybe it's best I didn't get this. P.S. - I love the guy who wrote "Not shelling the money out for this one. I'm only interested in a couple of shows from the 80s and 90s." What? Why is he here? On this site? P.P.S. - my first posting of my experience with dead.net disappeared into the vortex. Must have been the F bomb I dropped.

Based on the language above, it seems a good guess these shows will available for download, hopefully on a show by show basis. Because if the only option of hearing a released show is $750 or bust, that would not only be quite exclusionary, it would also stink like a baby's day old diaper. And those smell really bad.

Hey MinasMorgul, You may certainly buy one of my extra copies (at face value, of course), if I did actually buy four copies. I honestly don't know if all four pending charges will actually be legitimate purchases, but I'll let you know. I'm sure others are willing to do the same. No worries (easy for me to say/write), but everything will work out.

Call the bank associated with your credit card and ask them to delete the extra charges. They can remove them immediately. If you have not gotten an email verification or confirmation number from Dead Net, just have the bank remove all pending charges for this purchase and then do a new order later tonight when things quiet down. HTH.

Was not planning on attending Dead-Phish anyway. How else can I justify this. I got my first raise in eleven years. I eat low budget (and healthy). I can collect social security in a year. My rent is cheap. No kids to send to college. Economy car. Was at two out of thirty of these concerts. Waterbury, Ct.1972 and Salt Lake City 1995. OK excuses excuses. Well Phuck me blue damn it!,I've been phucked by the phickle phinger of phate yet again.

One Man, I think this will sell out, but not for some time. That being said, if theres enough volume to shut down the site, theres already a lot of pent up demand, its a unique release and the production run is 'small'. but the sticker shock will keep a lot away and alienate a bunch too. That being said, there were 12k DaP 1's printed. Want one? (kidding) mbarilla, I did listen to the 10/20/68 show on serious yesterday. I have never heard a Death Don't Have No Mercy I did not like yet. It was a cool show. They either will patch it or have a better source. ..and speaking of Bonus Discs, do we get one for putting up with all this nonsense today? Please, sir Bolo/master Pinkus?

To the poster in Ga who asked about his shipping fee, the state of Ga requires all big retailers (revenue of 1 million) to collect an internet tax. I also live in Georgia and that extra tax just may get me off this sharp barbed wire fence I have been dangling on for hours. All I really want is 66-75 and the book; and to be honest, I don't have to have the book or the 72-74 shows. I can always wait for a la carte releases. Just like E72, I believe it will happen, but it will take a few years.

So I've seen several scenarios with Dead boxes...immediate charges, pending charges, pending charges that go away after 2 days and show up 4 months later as committed charges. What's the story going to be with this one? Will it be pending, or are they charging cards now?

Won't sleep well tonight. I've happily bought every set for the past 5-6 years (including the 72 set which my wife still brings up when angry with me). But I passed on the DP subscription this year to help fund the 50th purchase. But I never thought they would push out a $700 beast. Maybe I'll get a part time job. Maybe I'll stay strong and pass on this. Maybe I'll buy the set and auction half of it away (seems sad to break up a family though) Maybe I'll just buy the Phish set coming out later this month. Back to lurker mode.

A few choices seem questionable, unless they are planning something for Spring or Summer 73. And 1980 should have an acoustic set included unless some Radio City / Warfield is getting separate treatment. And how about a bonus disc for early orders ?? What's up with that 10.21.72 Truckin > The Other One > Morning Dew The 7 inch is a super nice touch. I will give them that. And WTF !! How are they not going to put some pics up or any sort of art, but a promo graphic. If it's so cool lets see a video. Supaaaaa unprepared. And please shoot it inside with no wind effects. Have Mickey do it with his Go Pro.

Like (some of) you my order looped for a few hours. I phoned the cust service # and a very nice woman told me to wait it out, that she had been told that. I could tell from my router connections manager that my connection to the website was no longer there and clicked off. I emailed customer service and had a response that my order hadn't gone through, that their system had been broken for much of the day, to try again, and that the pending CC charge for the first one will be removed in a few days. My second attempt went through in seconds. So I'm covered, and maybe you can be too. My worry is for those whose CCs maxed out due to the "pending", and yet they're not getting anything for having their card tied up. I'm hoping they will be treated fairly and have their order filled; since the logs should show that they tried.

....but I've downloaded everything available from archives.org, most of them sound damn good, especially if you come from the tape trading days. When I think about some of the tapes I had!! I wish they sounded as good as the archive.org stuff (the Charlie Miller cleanings and posting are great). I laid out the big bucks, I'm lucky enough to have the green. I have all the big sets since Europe 72, they look good on the shelf. I've been wondering where and when this summer's set would come out,,, just check deadnet yesterday looking of what and when, but no go. Then today the email came. But if you really want shows, check archive.org. I'm also sure you can find fellow heads who will share what they have. Now I need to know if I got charged multiple time,,, oh and what Dave's Picks 15 will be!

Huskerwing-I don't know if you went out of your way to choose the more expensive shipping, maybe they'll charge you that if you want to pay it, but if you chose one of the two cheapest,-$34.95, think it was?-you saw a credit of that amount before you clicked the final order, as state sales tax should have been the only extra charge if your state has one. Mine was $751 and change total here in NJ. The spring '90 and '77 sets had shipping charges as well but this one and the Europe '72 included shipping. No real point in choosing pricier shipping since it's not coming until Sept. anyway. You can try and change it now if you want, but have to start over again most likely.

Salt Lake 2/95 weren't the best shows I ever saw, but they were fun, the 21st was definitely the best, and they were the best seats I ever had for a 3 night run. Remember when ordering on the phone old fashioned pre-internet days, I got thru after ten minutes BEFORE the 10 AM or whenever it was on sale hour about 9:57 or 9:58 and the ticket master lady was cool and told me she'd put me on hold until the hour struck. She came back to me before 10:05AM and told me she had 12th row Phil zone, 10th row center and 4th row Vince for his birthday show, three tickets each night. Was I stoked. So close we probably scared the band, as Damone would say. Remember noticing how snow-white jerry's 52 yr. old hair looked all of a sudden. Ticketmaster lady, wherever you are now, God bless ya forever. Scene was surprisingly mellow too, for Mormon town Salt Lake, we were expecting paranoia.

First of all Worcester does not have an "h". Now that being said I was at that show and it was fantastic. Yes I have many of these shows in excellent quality but I have been begging Dave and Mark P for over 10 years for the 10/12/84 Augusta show and now that they have made this part of the box, I just had to buy this. Plus I always said I would buy these releases as part of my gratitude for all the free music. So here we go and I can't wait to get this. 10/12/84 Morning Dew!!!

Customer service for the GD store gets bashed around here often, and with good cause. I am going to relate the flip side. I called when I was hung up in the circle of death and the guy took my name and number and said he would call me back when the system was fixed and taking orders. He did just that this evening and walked through the one order that did go through and the four that were approved to make sure I didn't want them to actually go through and be charged. His quote was he wanted to make sure I got what I wanted and didn't get what I didn't want as a result of the tech issues. That's good customer service right there.

To all those who are scared to purchase for fear of the wife"s wrath ( I am one too). I ALWAYS think it"s better to beg for forgiveness rather than ask for permission. I think it will apply in this case. I'm really happy to see the 92 show from the hammer in there. I think if this box is done right, if everything promised is delivered, than this box just might win a Grammy. Thank-you for doing this .

So it turns out my first order was probably cancelled, but then it did go thru. Although by then it was ordered again and without incident- this time it took 2 minutes, smooth sailing. This wouldn't be a big deal, but, and this is a big but- That $750 is frozen, even though the order didn't (or did?) go thru. I'm not one of the Carnegie descendants- I can't throw around $750 credit card authorizations like jelly beans at a Jolly Rancher Festival. Hopefully the card isn't actually charged until September, so I can live on Jelly Beans and Jolly Ranchers until then. Never had a problem ordering here before, and hopefully never will again- but what a fiasco.

I bet they wanted to make this announcement before Amazon. Once we figured out what was going on, the floodgates had to be opened. Explains the clusterfuck, but I am just speculating. ..but if you planned this, would you let Amazon go first? Not! Looking at this. Its going to be the Box to Rule All Box Sets. (now for the second mortgage to pay for it). There's shows here I never thought would get released that are just killer.

It's just a temporary authorization that will be removed in a few days. Though until it's removed those funds are occupied. It's really just the principle that a $750 hold was placed for something that wasn't actually ordered. Anyways, as long as I didn't order it twice, then everything will be fine (and there's some who tried more than twice). Might not know for sure until September and it starts shipping. Anyways, the ordering fiasco will hopefully soon be a distant memory.

Zuckfun - Call your bank now (use the fraud number which is manned 24/7) and ask them to remove the first pending charge on your account. That will free up the $750 the charge is currently using up on your credit limit.
