One more Saturday night at Winterland! Yes, we're back to home base for DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 42, the complete show from Winterland, San Francisco, 2/23/74. The one that featured the earliest amalgamation of what would soon become the Wall of Sound, the one that is so "loud, clear, and defined," it's been ripe for release for quite some time and we're glad it's finally getting its due.

First set or second, there are no wrong answers here. From the unique show opener of Chuck Berry's "Around And Around" and an incredible "Here Comes Sunshine" that would then disappear for 18 years, to a medley of WAKE OF THE FLOOD tracks - "Row Jimmy," "Weather Report Suite," and "Stella Blue" - cementing their status in the canon and an unstoppable hour through the classic 1973-1974 Dead that is “He’s Gone”>“Truckin’”>“Drums”>“The Other One”>“Eyes Of The World,” it's all exceptionally hot.

I need to carve out some time this summer and reacquaint, especially the 11th, hmmmm, that number 11 again lol.
Agree on 76 evolution etc. Really is yet another interesting transitional period, and another that amazes me how many consider it fly by territory? To each their own I guess…

....funny you've mentioned 7/18/76 - I, too have an excellent bootleg CD of this show and it is indeed a WHOPPER! The sheer ins 'n outs of songs during that second set is truly magical. It's outstanding.

As for my favs in all 'O 76, I was OVER THE MOON when the June '76 box came out - it hit all of my sweet sweet spots, and in doing, so, included my all-time favorite show from '76: June 11th. I needn't go into excruciating detail on this one, it seems to speak for itself on many levels; but that second set is is just pure drippy bliss to these ears. The Eyes is, hands down, my all-time favorite. Fight me!

But, that entire box is so outstanding and I really love the grooves they spew forth in that early part of the tour and then on into July. By the end of the summer, the sound is already starting to morph and get a bit more edge, which takes on an entirely different conversation and feel heading into '77.

Here we go again: I have an idea!

The PNW box was rightly hailed for showcasing the band's development in '71 to '73, major years of evolution in setlists and style.

And we assume, probably correctly, that vault tapes for the earlier years are fairly scarce. Taking up the spirit of the PNW box, an even greater illustration of band development would be to issue a modest box containing one show each from 1966 to 1970, the first five years leading into the 71-73 period of growth. The '66, '67 and '68 shows might well be one disc, two discs each for '69 and '70. Beef it up with a lengthy '68 show or two-show curated output for '69 and '70. Or pad it with partial shows that will never be complete. Ten discs and a booklet for $100. Make it limited edition if necessary.

Screw the fetishization of anniversaries and just do it. One show each from the slender stock of '66-'70 won't kill future notions of other uses. (And what "other uses" can anyone imagine? Shows from the first five years don't exactly scream potential release as "Dave's Picks" due to length.)

Yet another brilliant idea from HF that may never happen. But it's worth considering....

The 18th is the shizzle, but selfishly I hope they don’t release it soon as I have a great bootleg copy on CD, so would rather have something released we don’t have lol I got a tape of that one very early in my development and I’ve always loved the energy and turn on a dime segways on that one. Perhaps my favorite 76 show?

I’ve been pretty relaxed throughout the playoffs so far, but third period last night I started getting the fear.
Actually started getting unsettled before that since all the broadcasters etc were acting like it was already over.
Now being a Buffalo Loser for sixty years has made me a tad superstitious. See the last Bills game for reference, ahem. So it makes me extremely uncomfortable when they do that. By the end of the game everyone was acting like it was over: the press, the crowd, the AVs, everyone except the Blues!
But the thing that really signaled code red was the increasing sloppy play in the AVs own zone. As the Blues started scoring/catching up, they seemed to become extremely energized, like folks fighting for thier life will do. At the same time most of the AVs seemed to ? Can’t really describe but the result was increased sloppy play and worse, scary turnovers in their zone. This seems like their Achilles heel throughout the playoffs?
When McKinnon got the hat trick it was a slight relief, but I actually said to the other half, that I was worried this isn’t over because of the above. Sure enough, they tied er up and now it’s a whole new game.
I told her at the start of OT if they keep coughing up the puck their gonna lose…
I felt really bad for McKinnon after having such an amazing game. That ridiculous third goal was old school magic ala Gilbert Perrault, beauty eh! But one player does not a team make!
So now you have an extremely capable and energized Blues team, heading back home where the fans will be jacked like Casey Jones himself, and perhaps an AVs team with internal noise In their heads, which all makes me like a dog that knows he’s going to the vet! No Bueno!
Hopefully some of the folks who’ve been quiet in this series will step up because If they don’t git er done in game 6 I think the Blues might win the series.
Hope this 20 year curse doesn’t turn into a fifty year one like our poor bastard friends from the North. ; )

And talk about scary good, I’d say currently the Bolts are the team to beat! Not sure what to make of the other eastern series? You’d think Edmonton would learn from the AVs and nip that one in the bud tonight?

7/13/76, great show, time to release it, I was there. Those Orpeum tickets were hard to get, they went fast. The Orpheum only holds 1800 people. I saw Garcia play there a couple of times in the 80s.

E72....DaP 42....DaP 1

As usual, my listening sprint was derailed by the May Dave's Picks. I have managed to get the Dark Stars in. There is a cool Steve Hoffman Forum thread that has people analyzing all Dark Stars in great detail. A must for people who enjoy reading about the little nuances and time stamps when everything occurrs.

E72 repeats. I find a lot of cool stuff from version to version on many of them. The longer jam songs are obviously worth the trip. But even the shoter tunes have subtle differences that make them great to get to know (most of them).

This Dave's Picks is incredible to my ears. It's just a consistent dose of Dead all the way through with great sound and good mixing. Yeah, there are some audio anomalies here and there, but they're not too frequent. Billy is having a night of it. I've been including the Bonus Disc highlights within the main set, because I can't wait 4 or 5 hours for China Rider, Brown-Eyed Women, and Uncle John's Band. How does it compare with DaP 13? I can't tell you that...you couldn't afford me....

Sixtus I also love DaP 1. Man, What I went through to get a copy of that. Some lommox on eBay sold me a burned copy for 40 bucks. What a dick. But I was desperate to hear what was so great about it, and I didn't have any '77 except the commercially available 5/28. So I basically had no exposure to the '77 machine. And it was so popular on eBay, I figured it was the Veneta of '77. It did not disappoint. Still has some if my all time favorites from that year. I think they play just about flawlessly, like a studio record, all the way upmto the backup chorus vocals. I still find it to have the most definitive Mississippi Half-Steps; doesn't have the jam you get with Englishtown, but that's what Englishtown is for. It's only weakness IMHO are the last two songs. Not really into post-hiatus Around And Around or Johnny B.

Good old grateful podcast - Europe 72

I have been listening to this podcast from it's first season. Currently it is covering the Europe 72 tour, show by show, venue by venue, days off adventures, with marvelous interviews with those of the 42 person entourage who were literally 'on the bus'. Wonderful stories abound, including great backstories of the new songs that made it to the official Europe 72 LP. Today I heard a great breakdown of all the characters referred to in Ramble on Rose, and the history of Morning Dew.

This podcast is making me consider going through the trunk again, this time just enjoying all the long jams.

PS Really enjoy all the discussion of Jazz masters. McCoy Tyner is one of my faves-seen him several times at Yoshies in Oakland. He used to play two week stands there right around my birthday. I would have a small birthday gathering of friends there, eating sushi, then we'd all go see the show. One time my friend passed him a note, and McCoy announced my name and it was my birthday! Sweet memories!

Someone on this forum mentioned Charles Mingus at Carnegie Hall a few months ago. I picked it up, nice mellow jazz, with a great pianist, Don Pullen. I really enjoy this and now I'm considering some of the other recommendations from you jazzy folk! Thanks for the great conversation.

Songs played during Europe 72

It occurred to me last night just how many new songs they played on this tour - and how few off "American Beauty", which was their last studio album at the time. Strange in a way, considering how good it is. Only "Truckin" and "Sugar Magnolia" were regulars-with just the one performance of "Brokedown Palace" as an encore for one show ( I think). Just goes to show how prolific they were at that time, I guess.

Hey VGUY72. I heard them on JamOn on Sirius and downloaded a couple of shows off Nugs. They are an awesome band. Jam band for sure. My favorite so far is 4-9-21. Take a listen. I've wanted to see them but I really curtailed my concert going since covid.

Another band you guys need to check out is Umphrey's Mcgee. They are a little heavier than Goose but in my opinion the best band there is today. I've seen them about 25 times before covid, mostly on the rail, and for sure the best times I've had since seeing the Dead in the late 70's early 80's. You really need to check them out live to get the full effect but download a show or two. 10-20-17 from the Capitol in Port Chester is one I would recommend. I saw a private show in Garcia's bar next door right before this show. They played right under a picture of Jerry. A great night!!!

The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Village Vanguard imbroglio...

So we're maybe 17, possibly 18, and we head into NYC to catch The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band at the Vanguard, which is barely big enough for the band and triangle-shaped room of the classic tiny bar tables. T-shirts, jeans, long hair, natch. Maybe three or four of us. My buddy's dad had drummed for the Newark-based Savoy label and turned us on to real music beyond rock 'n roll. So we were on a mission.

We catch the first set and blow our money on several drinks apiece. Second set starts, waiter stops by, 'What'll you have?' 'Oh, nothing, we're good.' (We're now broke except train fare home.) 'I'm sorry boys, there's a one-drink minimum required.' 'We bought several in the first set, doesn't that count?' 'No. No it doesn't.' Maitre de comes over. 'Gentlemen, you'll have to buy a drink or leave.' A light goes on in my head.

'May we have a word in the kitchen?' I say... 'Sure,' says the maitre de, uncertain of my motives. So we go into the tiny kitchen, a cook is looking on, and I said, 'We'd like to stay for the second set, would this help?' And I pull out a fat bindle of blow and dump some on the steel steam table. (The maitre de's eyes are getting wider...) Then I pull out a bag of killer Columbian and place a few buds on the table. The maitre de smiles. 'Feel free to order whatever you like, it's on the house,' my new best friend says. Ah, New York City in 1975! Where there's a will there's a way... even for veritable kids on the loose.

Trying not to get carried away, catching up. HF: fine stories from back in the day. In central Maine through mid 70s, our code name was CKR, for Columbian Killer Reefer, a huge step up from Mexican weed and standard grade Columbo. My how things have changed, local farmers gearing up, October 1st, retail sales begin in Vermont. Maine is way ahead of any other NE state in terms of retail, quality and value.

Forgot to mention Roosevelt Sykes for blues/barrelhouse piano. Saw Gary Burton and band play at a college chapel around 1971, outstanding. My second fave vibe after Hutcherson.

JJ Cale, indeed. A while back here, tagged a nicely done cover of Cale's "Same Old Blues Again" by the Terrapin Family Band with Neal Casal on location at TS, with that sweet Tulsa chug. Video can be found on the tube. Story goes, Cale was "discovered" after Clapton picked off "After Midnight" some fifty years ago. JJ's original remains the best, imho. He released several albums in the 70s that are well worth checking out.

Yes, yes, yes, yes, the 60s box must be about to be announced, fingers crossed there's several versions of Viola Lee Blues therein.

I also have it on good authority that a flock of Russian man-eating starlings has escaped, they are heading South and are expected to make it as far as Vancouver by the weekend. Much like fish are attracted to flash lures, these mutant starlings are attracted to jittery, tall, distracted people with a remote controls. I suggest filming the next reveal before the weekend.

Chances are (nice song) if it is multi year, it’s going to cover different eras. That way they can have a mix of reels and cassettes/dats etc. I’m not sure they’d go full cassette/dat for a box yet as they still have many reels and then there’s the whole ABCD situation?
But if I’m correct about the above, there are just too many venues etc to try and guess, though my Great Dane Bix would fit the bill!

Maybe the Lyceum vinyl box, momentous as it is, has cast a bit of a shadow over the next one of the year. For better or worse. Whatever is released next has that as company - and it may influence which year(s)are chosen. Or it may not.

This is only relevant to anyone who had to wait a long time to receive a package(surely that's NEVER happened to anyone here) :)

Had a package shipped from TN, which is only 3 states away. It has travelled thus far, with 22 scans:

All of this has already taken the better part of 2 weeks. WHY??????

Excellent video on Paul Motian in NYC, at the end of his career, with undertone of valiant struggle with cancer that would take him out. One of the great contemporary jazz drummers, unique in many ways. ....there is a very good copy of video from a tasty portion of this show on yootooob; it's black and white if I recall (Nay! it's in color, I just checked) but crispy picture and sound. Pretty sure it includes the entire second set and the heavy Estimated > Shakedown from this show, which was a highlight for me despite Jer having a bit of laryngitis.

I will check out the aforementioned Bakedown GOAT from today in '85.
