    Recap, part 2:

    It appears that the "streaming releases" issued by the Floyd in 2021 and 2022 are related to the changes in European copyright laws, especially the "use it or lose it" aspects that have prompted numerous reissues of old stuff from several bands.

    The funny thing is, of all those Floyd releases in 21 and 22, they may not have "originally owned" those, almost all of which were audience recordings. Unless, of course, they bought the masters from the tapers.

    It appears that audience tapers latched onto Floyd shows fairly early on, maybe around late 1970, because moving forward from there there's lots of audience recordings. Of these "streaming issues", the Hollywood Bowl show from September 1972 may be the best. The recordings they issued in 21 and 22 have actually been around for a long long time. Glad I have them, but I don't go there often.......

    One noteable exception is the 1/23/72 Southampton recording----sounds like a soundboard, maybe worth checking out? A very early DSOTM show...............

    3/14/73.........6/18/75........6/27/77................believe me, I remember.............

    I never cared for The Wall. One of the most overrated Floyd albums, but they were superstars already so it sold millions. Couple of decent songs, lots of filler, overexposed on the radio. The fact that they brought it to only 2 US cities, I thought was arrogant and disrespectful to the fans. Which, in a way, was very ironic. Yes, I have it, but it hasn't gotten airplay here in decades...........

    Took me a while to warm up to Animals. I'm not a huge fan of "political music", but I like it a lot. Very underrated Floyd album. Snowy White was in the studio for this, and his solo was released on the eight track version of Pigs On The Wing. Yes, I'm a dinosaur, I had that in my car lol...............

    The Final Cut? More like a Waters solo album. Still listen to the live cuts from Ummagumma, Meddle, DSOTM and WYWH with some regularity. Atom Heart Mother, kinda weird, Alan's Pschedelic Breakfast a big waste of vinyl, 3 pretty OK short songs, and the big suite. Of course, if there was no Atom Heart Mother, there might not have ever been an Echoes lol......

    When I first got into bootleg recordings, late 1979, I quickly discovered that there was very little high quality Floyd around, and I think this was an issue for me, it may have had something to do with me turning away from the Floyd and more towards the Dead. Some of the best Floyd out there, then and now, are their BBC appearances, which have been well preserved and are worth checking out.

    After the "big Pink Floyd divorce", I went to see the first tour of what I sarcastically called "the 3/4 Floyd", more out of curiosity and to pay my respects. The spark wasn't there and I never went again. And while I'm not a big fan of Waters' politics, he's right about one thing----Gilmour doesn't write very good songs. In one man's humble opinion, the "post-divorce" albums are very weak. But I'm a fan and a sucker and I have them, so bad on me..........

    Enough for now, back to our irregularly scheduled programming............

    Who was it, then?

    I wonder if the lack of knowledge about exact dates of shows is something of a British malady. I have no idea what dates I saw most of the bands I witnessed in the past. I can usually remember the year, and the time of year - Floyd at Knebworth was summer 1975. More than that, without looking it up, I know not.

    It's not a criticism by any means, in fact it's a quality - Deadheads generally seem to have a phenomenal memory and knowledge of dates. If any Britain knows the exact date of something he or she did in the 70's or 80's, chances are they are a Deadhead.

    So this is what the end of civilization looks like, huh. Dave's Picks still on the shelf after 6 weeks and the topic is Pink Floyd. I've seen worse ends to civilization.....

    Like most classic rock bands I got into Floyd sort of backwards. The Wall was my first exposure - every other year my Dad bought a cool album, and 1979 was The Wall (the previous was News of the World). Then I started hearing it all over the radio, along with a lot of Time and Money. Once In a while they break out One of These Days, US and Them, or Wish You Were Here. And then I found Animals in a friend's record stash, and Dogs caught my attention. Side two eluded me. I just plain didn't like Pigs (Three Different Ones), and I never made it to the Sheep outro early on (a few years later a friend pointed out the ripping guitar ending by Gilmour. In those days without internet or complete song background and recording history in the liner notes, we had no reason to believe it wasn't him. It became a favorite.

    Went on to get the rest of the 79s stuff and happily saw them on the Momentary Lapse and Division Bell tours. I don't really like either album, or the Final Cut, or Waters solo material (Radio Kaos was ok). It's a shame really, because the post-Wall years featured a lot of workable material that could have been crafted into at least two more great Floyd albums. But alas, it was not to be. One of the best bands to hang it up before their time. Oh...imagine my disappointment severl years later when I learned it wasn’t Gilmour playing the guitar on Sheep.

    There has been a small avalanche of live Floyd, circa 1970-1972 mainly, released over the last 12 months, in England. I have just had a quick count on Amazon UK and there are 14 there at the moment. These are bootlegs in all but name , though, and seem to be either FM or audience recordings. Looking at the reviews, the consensus of opinion seems to be that they feature great playing - but indifferent sound. They are not always what they seem, either. "Sound of Philadelphia" supposedly from that city 3/15/73 seems in actuality to be another version of Wembley 1974.

    How Doc describes Floyds acid rock status is very much reflected by how I perceived them in the early 70's. "Relics" " Meddle" and "Ummagumma" were the first ones I got in 1972. Very far out, with an underground audience to boot. While it was immediately apparent that DSOTM was a great album , it was also the moment they went mainstream. By 1973, their image as lords of infinite space had been usurped by the likes of Hawkwind, Gong and Faust - and Tangerine Dream, who seemed to be inspired by the space epics Floyd had introduced and played up to 1972.

    I didn't see them until Knebworth 1975 - a very indifferent show, with a set list almost the same as Wembley 1974 - except for "Have A Cigar" sung by Roy Harper.

    Doc here, who was a FloydNoyd long before he was a Deadhead............

    Most of the story surrounding Wembley 74 is pretty well known, although why a broadcast of one single complete show wasn't done remains unclear.

    To recap: The shows from Novermber 15 and November 16 were both recorded by the BBC. A mix of the DSOTM portions of both shows was broadcast on the BBC on January 11, 1975. The first half was from the 16th, the second half from the 15th. The Echoes from the Early Years box was from the 16th. Shine On, Raving & Drooling, and You Gotta Be Crazy--which appeared on the Wish You Were Here Immersion box set----were from the 15th. Why they did it this way, who knows BUT these are pretty much the highest quality sonic documents from this period.

    Like most other bands, who didn't record all their shows unless prepping for an official live album, the Floyd apparently did not routinely record everything. Which means that there really aren't a lot of soundboards or even FMs of their best work, which in my opinion was 68 through early 73. However, with that being said, there are LOTS of audience recordings from that era, and some are even fairly decent.

    The Floyd didn't ditch their acid-rock-cult classics until well into 73, but after DSOTM had been around for a while, they really got locked into a format and their old stuff pretty much disappeared (although, LOL, they did their last Axe in May of 1977 in Oakland). Still a great band, but much less interesting...........

    Oh what I wouldn't give for a soundboard of my first Floyd show---Boston Music Hall March 14 1973. I do have a nice audience recording, and yes it brings back fuzzy but fond memories............

RT Vol. 1 No. 1, 1979 - Interesting sound on this. Very dynamic and heavy on the midrange? Vocals not so much. Brent's electric piano (synth?) so bright and loud it hurts. Phil sounds good though.

Glad to hear that folks are getting their Dave's Picks 45 in the mail. I got a shipping notification 5 days ago, but if I click on the tracking number USPS still says they are waiting for the package. This has happened before and I've come home and found the package waiting for me, so who knows.

Thanks to all who've weighed in on why this Pick isn't sold out. Anecdotally I've often found that people wax lyrical about Spring '77 but don't seem to have the same affinity for Fall, so maybe that's a factor. IDK. I just know that I was enjoying the heck out of Dave's Vol 25 yesterday. Pulling out 23 today just to listen to it while it's still January...

Mine tracked all the way with UPS until it was handed off to USPS.
At that point the USPS system tracked it until it was put in my mailbox today.

Started with 10-2 set 2 since I had a pretty good cassette copy of that show and know it well.

Sounds grate!
And waaaaaay better than the opera.

UPS tells me "A delivery date will be provided as soon as possible", the same message since 1/25/23. USPS just says Status not available. If I hadn't had three prior bouts with Dave's Picks being lost in transit and taking months to get resolved, I'd be less anxious about it. Not too encouraged seeing the shipping address is missing my apartment number, which my billing info definitely has as it's listed twice on the order status page at deadnet. Oh well, plenty of Dead to listen to...

And GOGD DaP 45 Listening Party followed by my own Listening Party to 9/9/72 The Other One, which was a relisten as I listened to it when it was announced, curious at a 34 min Other One a week after the 9/3/72 Folsom one that is filler on DiP 36 9/21/72. It more than delivered, but this time I let the Stella Blue play, and I normally don't care much for '72 Stellas, as they just haven't yet found it, and it's almost exactly perfect in '73; but this one was fantastic. Phil is all over it. Far better than the one 2 weeks before on DaP 24 8/25/72 where Jerry is still searching for the vocal and the guitar voicing (another 30+ Other One on that one, too), but I also believe Jerry was completely wasted at that point. But anyway, I know some like to go in with virgin listens to the Normanized, I just get excited and want to hear some of the highlights of what I will hear in better quality. I also listened to Bird Song and Playing on this venture on 9/9. Saving the rest for May, I suppose.

Hope to hear more good things about DaP 45. I liked the Listening Party, except Jack Straw. Way too fast a tempo. Doesn't need to be funereal slow like Dead & Co, but I like a good loping pace to Jack Straw that builds to a fiery peak, not the double time, frenzied pace of this one. DaP 25 11/6/77 shows how by the end of the tour, they learned how to burn the place down with Jack Straw and keep it about the same tempo, just throw in more and more of the power chords.

I've also had delivery issues in the past.. this was not one of those times. Shipped notification email arrived Jan 25; package showed up today via US Mail (Jan 31). Tracking the package online was useless and seldom updated. Love the liner notes and pictures.. can't wait to spin it.

I always thought "Passenger" had a Stonesy type swagger, and I notice that's played on the first night of this set. They did seem more heavy rock to me in the second half of 1977 compared to the first.

Hi Everybody. For what it's worth, I never received a shipping notification. I just noticed yesterday that USPS was bringing a package to my house, which was delivered with my regular mail. If I didn't look at the USPS Informed Delivery e-mail, I would not have know it was coming.

I always buy the vinyl but I just listened to this and it is good but...
I better decide fast only 5000 copies.
That's what I thought about Light Into Ashes.
And I think it is still available. (Yes, and it was a 7200 copy release)
Could justify Dave's 1 on vinyl because I don't have the CD.

Well that was unexpected. Seems a bit of an odd choice for a release to me on the back of Daves 45, featuring shows played only two months before it. I played the cds last month and while I do think it's a great show - both sets - I can't remember thinking there was anything wrong with the sound quality that could be improved by listening to it on vinyl.
I guess buying it would be insurance if the cds become unplayable in a few years, as some of them seem to have become..but otherwise, I'm not so sure.

Ordered. Sorry 1st but that sucking sound was my wife's card being spanked to death. I would have asked her permission but she's been on a conference call. If I wait it may sell out!!!

45 is close, but Dallas is shut down for the second day since we got a 1/2 inch of snow!!! Post Office didn't even come yesterday. Looked like snow, but I guess it isn't,,,, right? Rain, hail, sleet or snow, must have be something else :-)

None of my GD CDs have what has been discussed here as "disc rot".
Most of them have never been played (or stored) in the car.
Just lucky? They have been in the dry high desert W. Colo. environment.
Hard to say. Maybe just bad pressings (are CDs pressings?) or production issues for the rotten ones?

Edit: Thanks Dennis, I'm good. Gonna pass I'm afraid. Your DFW area looks like they drivin' in the funny papers (to quote Hoke in Driving Miss Daisy) on that ice. Just one after another piling up. Got a CO buddy who is in Ft.W and he always remarks at the lack of bad weather driving skills down there. No practice I guess! And likely no snow tires either.

Edit 2: Oro is famous! He is cited in Community Bits in the Feb. GD Bulletin currently in my inbox. Way to go Oro! And they mention it is Dave L's anniv. of 1st day working for the GD. PIc of him in his bold ski outfit and some cool looking rockered skis with bolts on them. Seen lots of different GD skis but don't know who made that newer model. Anybody know? The pic with his cat is cool too. Big ole long hair. Of course it's a longhair! Dang hippies, get off my lawn!

Got mine today. Haven't listened to it yet, but I'm very pleased that it contains both shows. Wasn't expecting them to both be complete shows. Thank you Dave.

The 10/2 post-drums section is one of my favorites of all time. Especially Wheel>Truckin>Other One - the transitions are exceptional. Yes, The Other One is brief, but that whole trifecta with the transitions is picture perfect. I can't wait to listen to it.

I have not been lurking here at all in recent months. I hope everyone is in good health and enjoying 2023 so far. Stay warm this weekend!

Hi all, I hope the crew is doing well. I got my copy yesterday and after hard jiu jitsu training session, I came home and gave it a listen. I got through CDs 1 and 2 which is the 10/1 show. As expected very much a classic 77 show. I really love that we are getting more of the fall of 77 being released simply because those shows still have 1977 Grateful Dead feel and flow (obviously), but they do differ (at least to my ears) from April and May of that year. Right now I am listening to 10/2 and I have to say there is quite the exceptional Casey Jones opener... In any case, 1977 is the year that keeps on giving.

Random things:
I have recently discovered Jethro Tull beyond the one commonly played song Aqualung that circulates through the local radio stations. Needless to say I am jumping head first down that rabbit hole.

Oro got the shoutout in the monthly Grateful Dead bulletin in the Community Bits section. Very cool!

I believe that today is the anniversary of Dave L coming on board with the Grateful Dead. All I can say to that is what I always do: Thank You Dave for everything! And when you can , how about a 1985 release pretty please?

Picked up at the PO yesterday, previewed a few last night. Audio quality preliminary (*after auds) seems excellent. Busy with prep for the bitter cold weekend, will keep warm with this full listen soon. Nice to have more October to go with DaP Dekalb and RT 1.2 releases. Reminding folks Dicks 29 has hidden tracks from October 11 show on discs 2 & 5, including a grate Wharf Rat.

Is it just me, or is the sound quality not great for the first couple of songs on Disc 1 of Dave's 45? About halfway through TLEO it gets better, but not great to start. Could be my Bose disc player acting up.

She's over it now and not very impressed with Greenie.
At best it was a fuzzy blob, as comets are, but color was evasive.
That said she did not set up the little telescope, just 10x binos.

Tull - Thick As a Brick, easily my favorite, Living In The Past comes in second. For more modern releases Rock Island and Roots And Branches weren't too bad. Oh, and Crest of a Knave was good.

Kudos to your Mrs for her dedication. You’re right, though, most of the time - with the exception of Neowise - comet gazing is a dud. Neowise was a rock star.

Hey PF, I have a junior in high school, and he just wrote an essay for his English class titled something like "Why the SB 49 call was not as bad as you thought." He makes some great points, including that there was an 80% chance that play call would result in a touchdown. He goes into this "the analytics say" stuff and I'm just like, I don't give an EFF what the analytics say, you got Beast Mode, hand.off.the.ball. Kids and their analytics these days, pfttt

Jethro Tull - Benefit, Stand-up, Storm Watch, Living in the past.
Spinning 45 now, after the first two tunes, it evens out and becomes very pleasant. Mexicali with Jer shredding and the last Dire Wolf in the key of E. A Cassidy then Deal with Jerry again on top of it into a killer Passenger then back to Tennessee. Great first set here with a real pretty Peggy-O. Second set looks great too.
