An institution in American rock music, the Grateful Dead continue to surprise the ears with new arrangements and altered styles. If their playing continues with the force that was heard in San Bernardino, the spirit of the Dead will live on. - Sun Telegram

We are more than pleased to kick off this year's Dave's Picks series with the much requested and quite spirited complete performance from Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, CA 2/26/77. The Swing ’77 show was a unique beast, unlike any others from this era: as the band’s first concert of the year, it bridged the gap between the new and re-emerging sound of the returning 1976 Grateful Dead and the precision excellence of the spring ’77 Dead. Debuting two of their most intricately crafted songs of the 1970s, “Terrapin Station” (to open, no less!) and “Estimated Prophet,” the Dead demonstrated right from the start of this new touring year that they were not going to be a nostalgia act; they were going to be as adventurous and ambitious as they were at any time in their career.

Join the adventure as they soar through tried and true ("Playing In The Band," "Tennessee Jed"), well-loved covers ("Mama Tried," "Samson and Delilah," "Dancing In the Street"), and epic new jams.

Rounded out with three songs from Santa Barbara, CA 2/27/77, this one was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 29 is limited to 20,000 individually-numbered copies*.

I wish I liked Garcia Band more. it's just that the set lists are so repetitive.

I get plenty o' Jerry via the GD, so no worries, ultimately.

I'm kinda looking forward to it also. We've got the perfect spring weather in the Bay Area right now, so kinda perfect music for it.

Was it the Samson from Dick's Pick's 18? (one of the all time greatest releases - ever). This one has an 11+ minute Samson that I recall goes on for a bit longer than normal...

but I was too young to see BD in 1975

that had to wait until 1987 with Dylan and the Dead

BD opened for Phil and Friends at the Gorge in 2000; one of my favorite shows of all time. i think it was 6/17.

    yeah, that was great.

I heard a version of Samson & Delilah a long while back that I have never been able to place; I'm thinking maybe this room will know what I'm searching for. It was from 78 or 79, and it seemed like in the middle of one of Jerry's solos, Bob's equipment must have crashed because that solo just goes on and on and on, way beyond normal. Anybody know what show I am thinking of?
    Thanks

In the Scorsese film one of the interviewees said that he went to New York for a few months and when he came back he was a totally different musician. As a guitar player who’s been slowly plucking away chords and notes for 30 years with little success, this is mind blowing. Dylan is quoted as having visited the crossroads during this time....directions please?

Was it this board where I read there will be a new Scorsese ducumentary and box set covering the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue Tour? I will be first in line. Did anyone have the pleasure of seeing this tour live, or seeing Bob anytime pre 1975?

getting old: I referred to 7/4/81 as 7/11/81 recently. derp on me.

    best S/F from 80s? can't say OONNEE, but 3/10/81 is a top 5.

isn't Dave's 5 (11/17/73) the one with Here Comes Sunshine as the second track? :)))

Moon/June/Spoon reference: a long time ago I saw a Wizard of Id comic where some guy was singing "we got busted in June, when the cops found our Spoon, by the light of the Moon". nyuk nyuk

Dylan's triptych of awesomeness: legendary stuff, indeed.

Right on Uncle Sam
I'd think most may agree, this thread helped get our collective mojo back.
Whether it was the awesomeness of the 'Schwiiiing' or just that the time was right, the metamorphosis is hard to ignore. I trust it will carry over with the momentum in tow aiming at the prime time rockabilly-fest in 2/3/70.

Peace All
