Announcing July 1978: The Complete Recordings

We’re pleased to announce JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, five incredible unreleased shows and the first official release from the long-lost tapes, recently returned to the Grateful Dead’s vault. Follow the Dead on a sonic journey through a superb selection of settings, an often epic adventure that finds them winning over Willie and Waylon fans in Kansas City, conjuring charisma in Omaha, and elevating the Red Rocks beyond their already spiritual planes. With five distinct performances painting the masterpiece of 1978, Betty Cantor-Jackson's always-pristine soundboard recordings, and the "hall-of-fame pedigree" of the Dead's first-ever shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, this is one release that far exceeds excellence in music, sound quality, and rarity.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, JULY 1978: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS includes Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO (7/1/78), St. Paul Civic Center, St. Paul, MN (7/3/78), Omaha Civic Auditorium, Omaha, NE (7/5/78), and Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison CO (7/7/78 and 7/8/78) - all of the performances in this collection are drawn from the band’s master soundboard recordings, each newly mastered by Jeffrey Norman. The set also features original artwork by esteemed cartoonist Paul Pope (D.C. and Marvel comics) and in-depth liner notes written by Nick Meriwether (Grateful Dead Archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz), as well as a producer’s note from producer David Lemieux.

Due May 13th, we anticipate that this extraordinary box will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks right here.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

July 1978: The Complete Recordings delivered today

Hi just an bit of info for people who were in a similar position to me: I ordered the Box Set (as part of a larger order) on 9-21-19, and it arrived today, so a little over 3 months later. I had written CS once (on November 26) and received a reply on December 3 from Warner Music Group Customer Service which read, in part:

Due to a complex warehouse move we now have a significant backlog of both customer inquiries and shipments, and as a result we haven’t been able to deliver at the level that we pride ourselves on.
For those waiting on their orders, while we wish we could give you an exact estimate as to when your order will ship, we are still awaiting the exact order status details that we urgently want to get to you.
We are putting 100% of our focus and dedication into a solution to this shipping delay, and are currently working with our warehouse partner to send out outstanding orders.
We wish we had been able to have communicated this to you sooner, but we had relied on assurances from our warehouse partner that they would be able to quickly resolve the backlog of orders, and they haven’t been able to honor this commitment. We must again apologize for this delay in reaching out to you.
While it is not our place to be making requests of you, we do hope that you will continue to be patient with us, as we work through these issues and work with our current partner to ship out your order as soon as possible.
We are genuinely sorry for the delay and inconvenience associated with your order, and we thank you for your patience and understanding to date.

HANG IN THERE FELLOW DEADHEADS!!!!!! AS ALWAYS IT WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT.
However, I don't see the Box Set currently listed for sale on the Dead's site right now either? My S/N was 091xx of 15000.
    Peace and Happy Hanukkah!

I feel for you, man. I made the mistake of ordering a simple CD (Terrapin Limited--3/15/90) for a Christmas gift some three weeks ago. Alas, it still sits in a "processing" status. Email requests have been answered with the same "robo-response" bullshit. And what makes it even more frustrating is dead.net had absolutely zero problems charging my credit card the day I ordered it...that portion of their logistical process seems to run flawlessly! And by comparison, I ordered other Christmas gifts from the Foo Fighters, Rush, and Pearl Jam websites the same day as my Dead order, and holy shit, like magic, all their merchandise arrived, as ordered, in less than a week.
This "we're moving our warehouse" excuse has grown pathetic and old...any logistical issues dead.net is having should be transparent to the customer! But allow me to end my complaints with a few suggestions, as I'm the kind of person who won't complain without bringing some solutions to the table....: (1) SHUT DOWN ALL SALES UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO COMPLETE AN ORDER! (2) DO NOT CHARGE THE CUSTOMER UNTIL AFTER A PRODUCT SHIPS!

Merry Christmas All---and Carlo, if you're really Jonesin for those 78 shows, PM me (if it works) I'm sure I have a copy's I could share

Wish I knew. I was hoping to confirm that the order will be recognized instead of forgotten. So I tried Dr. Rhino and got the same robo-response/apology as regular customer service email. These responses include a reminder that multiple inquiries may further delay an order...so handcuffed, LOL! But I can still play the shamisen and there are far worse things. It's all good.

I also ordered this box 7 weeks ago and still nada. I am waiting patiently because it will eventually ship. I will say it will ship on Dec. 22. What date do you think.

This same video was shown on the big screen for MUATM. Dave cleared up the fact that all 5 of the shows are Betty boards. I believe there was some confusion about that since the first listing on Dead.net said 3 of the shows were never before heard Betty Boards. I think that was because the Red Rocks shows have circulated before. So rest assured, all 5 shows are from Queen Betty. Rock on

Dream on, Icecrmcnkd. Sad to say, my wife's (legally compulsory) medical insurance is the most expensive monthly bill we have to pay. Second most expensive is my medical insurance. Things like mortgage payments etc. are much cheaper than the compulsory medical insurance. Oh, and just to rub it in, after paying for the exorbitant medical insurance, we each have to pay the first 375 Euros of costs (for medicines etc.) each year. 2 x 375 Euros = $848. As I have said before, these days everyone is a thief and there is nothing that one can do about it.

The pricing is no different than anywhere else in the industry. Take some friendly advice, and let go of your negative attitude - it serves nobody but your high blood pressure doctor. I know there is a life for you out there without angst, you just need to want it. Sincerely, Dr. LoveJerry

Actually I am surprised the Apple lossless version is only $100. If I lived overseas I would definitely save myself a lot of grief and go for that. The "high resolution" version is in theory higher fidelity than the CDs, so it makes sense it would go for a premium above the 16-bit product. If your German Shepherd can hear the difference, it might be worth the extra dough. I ordered the box this time but those days may be waning. There are way too many boxes around here!

This may not be the website or, indeed, the forum, but the GD being my #1 group, I might as well post the question here. I invested heavily in cd's (>9500). As long as possible, I will buy the cd, especially if nicely packaged, like GD. But ultimately it's the sound quality and listening comfort. I'm considering buying a ripping / vault / streaming addition to my system, probaly Bluesound, matching my NAD (M3/M5). I'd love to manage my complete collection with an i-pad (or similar) or mobile phone, switching from one year of GD to another (or from one version of Yesterday by the Beatles to another one by Sinatra). In that case I'd rip my cd's to a hard disc that's connected to my hifi. CD's would basically be the hard copy. I sense that several people here are doing exactly that. Could you please elaborate a little on pros and cons and things to take into account?

While I wait for the box to arrive, I was just looking over the known list of Betty Board shows that weren't in the Vault, just to hazard a guess as to how future releases may shake out. Mind you, this list is by no means complete, as 7/1, 7/3, and 7/5/78 were not on it. I'm guessing these 3 shows (and others!) were from the stash of shows that had never been tapped into. The interesting thing is that most of them are continuous runs of shows, meaning that they all seem to be built to make into box sets. The obvious candidates are: Capitol Theatre 1971: 2/18, 2/19, 2/20, 2/21, 2/23, and 2/24. The second show has already been released, so maybe it would be omitted. This should be more than enough to supplement the multitrack recordings that may have been used in the making of Skullfuck. Berkeley 1972: 8/21, 8/22, 8/24, and 8/25. None of the Betty Boards are complete shows, but hopefully the other sets are already in the Vault from other soundboard sources. May 1977 (The Other One): 5/5, 5/7, 5/8, and 5/9/77. Throw in 5/4/77, which was already in the Vault and you have a wonderful 5 show set. I don't know anything about the status of 5/1 or 5/3, and 5/18 and 5/26 would remain the only shows from the month not released. I can't see them passing up at a chance to complete the entire month with a 9 show set (and bonus tracks from 5/22) if those shows are available as well (5/18 and 5/26 definitely are). Those 3 are the obvious ones for boxes. There's also several sets from March 1973, which if other pieces exist in the Vault, would make a fantastic 4th option, but I couldn't see it coming out before the above three. There are also the 4 shows from 4/5, 4/6, 4/7, and 4/8/71, which aren't the best of '71 (although I've always enjoyed 4/5 and 4/6). From '76, there are 6/10, 6/11, 6/14, and 6/15/76 that could supplement RT 4.5. What I don't think we'll see are the April 1978 shows (basically 4/6/78 through 4/16/78). There are some moments here, and even a good show or two, but nothing more. There's also 3-4 very notable shows that would do well as stand-alone-releases, with 5/26/73, 6/29/76, 2/26/77, and 10/2/77 coming to mind first. That's not to mention obvious stand-alone releases that would accompany any of the above boxes (2/18/71, 5/8/77, and a comp of the Berkeley shows). Finally, there is a boon of acoustic October 1980 sets. As good as these shows are, I can't see them coming out without the electric sets, which were mangled during the construction of Dead Set. Even a compilation of acoustic material seems overkill; the expanded Reckoning has been all I've ever needed in terms of 1980 acoustic Dead. Anyway, that's how I see the return of the Betty's shaking out. I'd be willing to bet that we'll see the May 1977 in time for the 40th anniversary of the shows. It makes perfect sense to experiment and "collaborate" with July 1978 first, see if it is profitable, and then do May 1977 on the anniversary. I'm guessing that the owners of the tapes, with whom Rhino is "collaborating" with, is gonna wanna see a nice chunk of change in return for the fabled May 1977 shows.

(For the most part) negative attitude/angst can't be gotten rid of by conscious effort. First: note how the clarity of a mirror is unstained by whatever it reflects; then: identify consciousness with clarity & angst with reflections. This way, negative attitudes dissolve on their own, as untainted clarity ceaselessly self-restores, nourishing its own self-KnowGlowing fruition : clear through mind-rind.Then, even as the sky is yellow & the sun is blue, self-liberated wakefulness shines clarity clear through.

Vinyl and HD are "niche market" products, not "mass market" products. Unit pricing arithmetic is much different when the expected sale number is a "small" number. There are costs associated with preparing releases, obviously. Some costs apply to preparing for any and all release formats, but some are specific to single formats. CD sales are expected to be a "big" number, while HD and vinyl sales are "small" numbers. CD pricing can spread these costs over many more units sold than LP or HD pricing can. Thus, HD and vinyl releases are EXPENSIVE (gotta preserve the profit!). Most of you remember when LPs and cassettes were $9 and CDs were $18. Same reasons then. I think the "Rhino rat" is just those market forces that we all bow to. And, LoveJerry: print out your last 50 comment thread posts, finishing with your most recent one (to Unkle Sam). Read them aloud to yourself in front of a mirror. Please.

Release Date is May 13th. This does not mean it will be on our doorsteps on the 13th - it means it will ship on the 13th (or sooner). If you receive a shipping notice after the 13th, this does not necessarily mean it was not shipped on time, it just means the notice didn't go out before the 14th. This is all okay, as far as customer expectations are concerned. If the shipping notice indicates that our unit did not leave Rhino by the 13th, then there is grounds for complaint. There is also grounds for complaint that this is not more clearly explained on the Web site. All that being said, I'm okay with a day or two delay, because it's such an extraordinarily GOOD product that is being brought to us several times a year, at a fair price. By GOOD, I don't mean the Dead music in particular, as much as I mean the fact that there is a service and product here that is completely unique to the Dead, which fans of no other band really get to indulge in. Ithe would cost all of us a disproportionately higher amount of money to guarantee shipping dates - not worth it when we're talking a couple of days. Hope that was an education for ya Todd. Sincerely, Dr. LoveJerry

sorry folks, my ignorance is showing. Is there a difference in the sound? I download all dead in flac, sounds great, but as good as the cd? I don't have super dog ear hearing so I really can't tell the difference, but I think my cd's and lp's sound better, just an opinion, everyone's ear is different. Dr. Love jerry, thanks for the diagnosis, I don't have a dr. or high blood pressure, I live by the old adage "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" so I don't buy into the go to the doctor every time I get a little pain idea. I just call them like I see them, and I really did not get an answer for my question, why would you do this download thing? at least not from you, all I got from you is a reply about some self conceived negativity. Didn't mean to be negative, just think that soon, cd's will be old school and the powers that be are just getting us used to the idea that air should cost as much as a physical product. I do not agree and there fore the conceived negativity? I am so lucky not to need a dr. at my age, and if I ever did need one, sure hope he's better at his job than you, cause your diagnosis was way off. I think the only angst I have is that everything changes and sometimes, not for the better. As you get older, you might understand. Ken Goodman, that was a really cool reply, hard to follow and will have to reread it several times I'm sure before I get it to sink in, but that was some thoughtful stuff, got anymore words of wisdom?

Before Rhino took over operations, Dick's Picks and the other online/mail only CD and DVD purchases almost always showed up on or before the release date when Musictoday handled the distribution and shipping. Another issue early on for Rhino was that there were many problems with the actual manufacturing of the physical product (glue from cardboard slip sleeves on discs, bad and/or damaged discs...ect) that lasted well into the the Road Trips series (and others like '78 Egypt). Some problems still exist (sliced digipacs, cracked discs) but not as often as they were. There was even an issue with orders getting lost in the mail, particularly Dave's Picks Vol 3 where they ended up having to print an extra 500 copies. On the plus side, Rhino has exceeded expectations with the box sets for both, content and artistry. I don't mind waiting a few extra days, so long as I don't have to send messages to MaryE and Dr Rhino every other release for replacement discs. Since switching to digipacs from cardboard slip sleeves, Dave's Picks have been better for disc storage and transport. They seem to have worked most of the bugs out.

Thanks for kind words. Sorry for "hard to follow" nature of words, but that's what happens when you post first-draft material, without the wondrous luxury of revision(s). All I can say is [and beware: this TOO is raw first draft]: Nothing to be meditated, shining knowingly-- beyond all confusion essence of simplicity-- self-restoringly, vividly awake where image basks in clarity-- without any craving at all for the ecstasy-- where understanding knows where listener is silently : unheard of, un 3D...no trace at all its truest sense : I AM identity, unseparatedly, pre/post mortality... giving up the last obstruction: writing poetry.

In my experience, the FLAC and CD files will sound identical. And I can't hear the difference between CD and high-resolution (24-bit) files. I tried to hear the difference by performing a double blind test (my helper did not know which files she was playing, and I did not know either). Although I was pretty sure I was choosing the correct file format when listening, I was right only about half the time, which is the same as guessing. I have never seen any evidence (scientific studies, etc.) that anyone can hear the difference. I do like the warmth of vinyl. I have not tried a double blind test (vinyl vs. CD or whatever) but I'm sure I can hear surface noise, etc. that would give it away. But I also believe there is a depth to the sound that is more musical.

Hmmm, when you said "I smell a rat, a Rhino Rat", I took that to be negativity. What would you call that, if not negative? Certainly not positive....

Decided to play 5/14/78 from 30 Trips as a tribute to yesterday and as I wait for July 78 box. Wow! Jerry lets rip on Look Like Rain almost 3:00 into it! To my ears he usually lets rip at the end mostly! Lets rip. Peace.
