    The Pacific Northwest offers up a rich feast of land, sky, and water. It is ripe with influences, abundant with symbols, deep and spirited. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the Grateful Dead played some of their most inspired shows on these fertile grounds. It does, however, sometimes take a breath for the elements to re-align years later. It seems for us, they finally have and we are able to present not just a glimpse of the band's extraordinary exploratory tour through the region, but a two-tour bounty as the PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS.

    For PACIFIC NORTHWEST ’73-’74: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS, we've paired two short runs made up of six previously unreleased shows - P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, B.C. (6/22/73); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (6/24/73); Seattle Center Arena, Seattle, WA (6/26/73); P.N.E. Coliseum, Vancouver, Canada (5/17/74); Portland Memorial Coliseum, Portland, OR (5/19/74); and Hec Edmundson Pavilion, University of Washington, Seattle, WA (5/21/74). Each show has been mastered in HDCD from the original master tapes by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. The transfers from the masters were transferred and restored by Plangent Processes, further ensuring that this is the best, most authentic that these shows have ever sounded.

    Noon-ish is not the best time to catch a full-blown show.....
    My memory has clearly telescoped events, because I almost think I remember rolling over in my sleeping bag and, for breakfast, snorting a pile of 'chocolate' mescaline off one of those mini-cereal boxes. I definitely took some blotter. But even if we'd 'slept in,' it must of been 10-ish or something. Surely we'd had some water and a snack, probably provided by a merciful neighbor. We were still 15 and we looked like what we were: goddamm-near children! Ah, so I was saying, we dropped acid and snorted mescaline and fired up the pipe with Numero Uno and, hey, is that freakin' Jerry on stage? Wait, Bobby. Phil. Bill. The piano guy. Jer kept dipping his cigarette into a brass ashtray and, when he re-lit it, it flared up. I didn't hit the blow til '75 but later, I thought, freebase. I hope someone can clarify this, but I think I recall the band starting just a bit after NOON(!). As far as I was concerned at the time, they fucking rocked the place for hours. I do recall, as I often feel, feeling goofy about a camera while tripping. But I managed to snap off three shots, of which two survive, which catch the three guitarists blasting away on Playing in the Band, then turning towards each other to converse more intimately, finally arriving in a tight circle and sending tides of sound across the crowd. I think this was the time I experienced Phil's bass as physical, purple pulses in my chest and the realization that vibrations, rather than corporeal reality, were at the heart of existence. I clearly remember the gospel treatment at the end of He's Gone and at the end of Sugar Mag, Weir thrust his arm skyward for stop time, ran back to his amps, downed the rest of a Heineken and raced back to the mic for the coda. Still, I was 15, down front at one of the biggest gatherings of humans in history. I did look back over the crowd, but, as usual, there wasn't much profit in looking back. Not with the Grateful Dead killing it in front of me.

    The Soundcheck
    The Allmans rocked big time. They'd slayed us at RFK after the Dead when, exhausted and dehydrated, we had retreated to the shaded overhang of RFK and been simply psychedelically rolled over by the ABB. They smoked the Dead that day. Back to the Soundcheck. I got up and hiked around the scene while it was still afternoon. A very loose scene with lots of elbow room, cool air, breathing. I returned to our space, easily located, for The Band. It was nearly sunset when the Grateful Dead took the stage. We had all the room we needed. I started the soundcheck boogie-ing upright, shakin it to the rock 'n roll. I had snorted some mescaline and taken maybe a half tab of the blotter. Everyone knew this was unprecedented in GD history. Here we were, groovin' on a cool pine forest evening, high but not pressed and our favorite band was blasting away on the finest sound system we'd ever heard. I do not recall individual songs, just the transition between comprehensible songs and jams that had us smiling for reasons we knew not. [Beautiful Jam from So Many Roads is blasting in the background as I write these words.] I do clearly recall the feeling of complete ease as I nestled down into my sleeping bag, head on cool gallon jug, looking up at the band just jamming away. We rode it out after the band departed and the next thing we knew, it was morning and the crowd was bustling, hustling, and by noon it was show time all over again.

    I hope you are writing these in a word processing program and saving them.You probably should combine your memories and pictures and put it out on the internets where it will hopefully be forever preserved. Maybe upload the final version to the archive someday.

    Any headphone listeners out there? Or maybe you don't need them. I find the bass on this GSTL recording overwhelming. Bertha and Help On the Way are good places to start. I don't get the same thing with the SB I have if this show. I think Jeff Norman boosted it somehow. Anyone else notice it? Garyfarseer - what kind of medicine?

    The greatest missed show on Earth
    Long story shrunk to size... We had to get home on 10 June 1973 because we were exhausted, dehydrated, broke, without tickets, food, water, anything, so we thumbed back and tried to blend into humanity. I was 15. I lived with my parents, of course, and they needed to see some evidence that I was alive. They never even said a word about my setting out for a multi=day excursion in jeans and a t-shirt. We just did it. We heard the 10 June show was smokin' and we were pissed. We were NOT going to be caught short like that again. No effin' way. So when the news broke of a show with all three of the greatest rock bands of that time -- the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers and The Band -- we were on it like white on rice. Tickets cost $10.50? We had 'em. And we'd just seen the Allmans at Madison Square Garden in, May? I smuggled in a bong. A young cop caught me. An older cop said, "Let him go. It's a bong. Don't worry about it." Jesus, this whole law enforcement thing was confusing! But my view was broadening... Late July 1973. The older brother of a hot schoolmate of ours was driving to Watkins Glen. We signed on. Me, Mark L, David W, and a few others. We brought our backpacks. We had a little food. A shit-ton of Numero Uno. No alcohol. I had a sheet of blotter. Someone's adept use of the map enabled us to skirt around the worst of the traffic and we actually accessed the grounds in fine fashion, probably 12 hrs ahead of the hoo-ska-boo that eventually developed. The van's inhabitants split into units and we never saw our driver-host again, until a week later, just before the 31 July - 1 August shows back at Roosevelt Stadium. (Biggies, waiting for release...) So we hike over to the "gate," passing food trucks that specialized in big scoops of weed. We snickered, fully equipped. We were still 15. We entered the gates around midday and for some reason no one took my ticket, so I immediately doubled back to the chain link fence and passed my whole ticket to a have-not. Instinct, communal instinct. Later, my parents said that friends of theirs in Europe had seen footage that included my entrance into the concert site. The stage was perhaps 2/3 of a mile away. As we walked down the gently sloping hill towards the stage it was obvious we were a bit early. In earlier shows we were leery of getting too close because of the physical crush, the volume and the collective high that sometimes ... got a bit hairy. But fresh off missing 10 June, we marched down and claimed a beautiful space about 20 yards from the stage, just a bit left of center. On our way, we'd grabbed a few one-gallon water jugs that were set out free by Bill Graham in response to the scene at RFK in DC 6 weeks earlier. I found myself high on mescaline, laying on my sleeping bag with my head resting on a cool one-gallon jug of potable water and passing a doobie when the crowd sputtered and roared. It was late afternoon and the Allman Brothers had just taken the stage.

    Throughout the fall of 1972 and through the winter-spring of 1973 I had ingested numerous psychedelics, including the wonderful agent known as mescaline and naturally a few substantial doses of the Lady Herself. At one point, with my buddy Moose, we were sitting atop a van-sized boulder in a 2,000 acre wooded preserve near home and we focused on the visual margin between the rock beneath us and the ground in the background and felt that we had lifted the boulder upon which we sat perhaps several inches into the air, then lowered it again to its natural resting place. But I digress... June 1973 and me and David W are hitching to RFK in DC about 200 miles away for the 9-10 June 1973 shows. It's summer. So obviously we go in t-shirts, jeans, sneakers, with a ticket and few single dollars/dead presidents in my pocket. Next to the sheet of oval 4-way blotter. A little smokum in the sock, in case we got stopped. Look, we're 15, okay? 16 was months away. We were just up for adventure, loud rock 'n roll and, um, a closer look at the scene. I remember that some of the serious traveling hippies with LSD-dead eyes were there selling pipes, but also passing them around. We had long hair but we were little kids! These folks looked 50 but were probably 20, i.e., impossibly old, grizzled and of unknown origin. But no one actually bothered us, nor was there any attention. Everyone treated us as adults. So we slept on the ground on the grassy parts outside the stadium that night. No water, no food, no equipment. The next day, temperatures climbed towards 100. We were smoking a joint by the grate that blocked one entrance and a black cop motioned us over. We approached cautiously. "Hand me some of that, will you?" he asked. "WHAAAT???" was our initial reaction, having already experienced the pleasure of being cuffed and harassed by the cops for having a beer in the park. Turned out, cops can be cool, too. We burned two with the cat and we bid each other a good day. He was clearly amused by the scene, but in a groovy way. This was 1973 and racism and violence over the Vietnam War made longhairs outcasts, just like minorities of every stripe, then and now. Short story long, me and David split a 4-way and the Dead played that afternoon, opening for the ABB that night. The lines for water were long. We survived on The Lady, a little water and some "Numero Uno" substance we thought was hash but turned out to be opium. Worked for us that day, though, the heat was excruciating and I'm sure a lot of folks needed help in the heat. I got up close for Chinacat at the end of the first set. I was mesmerized. Bobby played a Gibson SG, which in my mind meant "bass guitar." Phil was playing a big possibly semi-hollowbody bass that said to my untutored eyes, "rhythm guitar." But I was already a huge Phil fan (being a Jer fan was too obvious) and this had me confused. At some point some idiot hurled a lit M-80 onto the stage (June 9, right? obviously in close proximity to July 4??) and it rolled up to Jer. In that day, he had a stage mannerism of sort of shuffling in place and I saw him move his right foot forward in perfect time and using the tip of his cowboy boot sent the live M-80 back out over the crowd. I don't even recall hearing it explode. The music was pretty loud.

    Backstory and launch....
    The briefest of backstories: Six years old in 1964, persuaded my mom to buy me a Beatles LP at the checkout counter of the local discount store. Played it on monaural phonograph with one 12" speaker output. Rocked as child. 13 years old in 1970, convince mom to drive me and a friend to a Chambers Bros concert. We dug the music but were too young for 'action.' 15 years old, summer of '72, catch The Byrds and New York Rock 'n Roll Ensemble at college outside Saugerties NY where The Band rec'd Big Pink five years earlier. We drove by Big Pink. (Still Pink.) We were 15. (An older brother was actually driving...) Since 1971, been spinning American Beauty and Skull & Roses LPs on the same phonograph as in 1964, only now it's in the basement where our ping-pong table and hang-out couch are located. 19 Sept 1972, I jump in a car full of older heads with an ounce of hash in my pocket, 33 days after my 15th birthday, and we proceed to the Roosevelt Stadium in lovely Jersey City, New Jersey, and catch my first Grateful Dead show. I had already been 'experienced,' but did not drop at this show; too chaotic, large crowd, determined to survive and catch my ride home. I listened for familiar songs, jams, anything -- nothing! Everything was different. Records, shme-cords. This scene was crazy. Maybe 10,000 people screamin' high groovin', freakin', dancin', gyratin', handing you things you knew best to pass along... I was alone in the giant crowd with the music louder but sweeter than anything I'd ever heard before. The music rocked, I just couldn't grab onto a big Jerry jabbin' guitar riff that would remind me of Skull & Roses. Obviously, this was no American Beauty. As Jer once said, recording in a studio is like building a ship in a bottle. Playing live is like being on the ocean in an open rowboat. And that's kinda how I felt -- out there, surfin', knew I'd have to get home ... 3 hours into the show, I do remember saying to myself, "Well, all righty then, damn good show, YOU CAN STOP PLAYING ANYTIME, I'M GOOD. GOTTA GET SOME REST... MUST SNAG RIDE HOME..." Part II, coming ...

A great band-I will definitely be having a look at the reissue of Sweetheart as a possible purchase. My favourite albums by them were actually the three before it-5th Dimension, Younger Than Yesterday and Notorious Byrd Brothers. But Sweetheart is great, too. This new Buffalo Springfield box set could be worth a punt, too. Nothing that hasn't been available for years...but supposedly now in better sound.

I was curious how many dead.net would allow me to place in my cart... the answer? Precisely 9,894 copies. I'm wondering how accurate a measure this is. Could it be only 5,106 copies have sold so far?

I think people are wanting to work on getting the july 78 box set before they get this one. cuz there seems there was a quite a bit of purchases for it after the positive talk of it. and why not its a really good box set, everyone seems to be taken with that Arrow Head show. well as for me i'm delving into '86 today.

I am currently working on the HJK February shows with summer '95 on the appropriate days of what I have. josie the cat saw a rabbit in the backyard and just couldn't understand what was going on at all. 4th of july used to be awesome for me, when I first moved here I could step into back yard on 4th of july and have an excellent view of the fire dept doing fireworks. now they moved and if I want to see em I can in my front yard but horribly blocked by trees. it sucks I wish it could go back the way it was. going to the park blows too many people and its used as a means to try sneak beer in and drink in public.

I'm just going down the road feeling bad. Listening to the top shelf American band in the Land. Mama tried to set me right. I'm guilty of losing focus. Apologies Mom.You want sparkles? Cue up 6.22.86. On my third tour. Really good show. Short sentences. I blame the IPA's. See how easy it is?

Version of history is one one of the most ignorant I have ever read. The revolutionary generation didn't fight for freedom from fear and want let alone the right to life. They fought to establish they had the rights of Englishmen and as the declaration of independence stated they had given up on getting them from the king who they wrongly thought was their protector. BTW glad to see you support the right to life lol.If you knew anything at all about that period in our history you'd know far from wanting the government to provide with freedom from want which by necessity would require a leviathan monstrosity like we have now they want as little as possible . One more thing I'm not much of a fan of ICE but in my work have to deal with them far more than you do, if you've ever actually met one. To call them the Gestapo shows the American Revolution isn't the only period of history that you are completely ignorant of.

Gonna have to push back on that one, globe-trotting American band with a worldwide audience and groups of simpaticos, okay. But, the Grateful Dead are ABSOLUTELY an American band. I'm a huge fan of camembert but that doesn't make it a global cheese, it's friggin' French... ;)

Now that our American Independence Day has passed, shall we get back to the music that drew us all here, that we share in such delight? Politics not worthy of debate here, imho, and we are very diverse, does dead.net have a political discussion page for those who would? Nahhhh. OK Cheese, I will debate, Vermont being a dairy state and damn proud of it. We will put our cheese up against anything else in the world... ok it might get sticky, yes. For example. in a small farm not far from me: http://www.vtcheese.com/members/blythedale-farm-2/ If you ever have the chance to put their camembert against ANY French camembert, go ahead try it. We have freaking incredible cheese here. Not going to even mention my favorite Vermont cheeses, don't make enough of them. World Class Cheese, like our World Class Grateful Dead. OK maybe I will mention one, because it is almost out of this world... called Bayley Hazen Blue, served to the French president when he visited the White House in 2014. Oh the irony of a reveal on Friday the 13th, I see a twisted humor in it. DaP 27 will sell out probably within 2 hours of the posting of the new page on the day of the reveal. The selected show? I have no idea what DaP 27 will contain, but it probably won't be from 1967, '68, '71, '73, '74 or 1977. "DaP 27 will be a show from the time period from 1/1/70 to 12/31/79." wissinomingdeadhead "had a dream that DaP 27 was 11/25/79" he could be right about that, but I won't count or bet on that one, but who knows...

Dave's Pick's really never sell out...there are LOTS of them for sale on eBay. It saddens me, as an old deadhead, that people would buy these to "flip" while others cannot even buy one. I know...capitalism! This would be easy to fix by limiting people to one. That would mean that they would sell out in two days instead of two hours. I've tried several American Camembert before, and none of them really came close. I'll try the one in your link if I can find it in California. However, if I'm not mistaken, the production of cheeses made from raw milk has been prohibited in the US since 1949; you cannot make a "Real" camembert without raw milk, ideally raw milk from Normandie.

@direwulf. As a Frenchman and as a deadhead since 1972, I consider the Grateful Dead to be an American band above all else. In France, the group has never had more than a success of esteem, and it is very little known. I think it is better known and appreciated in Britain and Germany. I'm French, but I recognize that I much prefer the Dead's music than the pie chart. This is of course only a question of personal taste. :-)

Member.... 1986; 6/30/86 Riverbend and 7/4/86 Buffalo were great, don’t remember so much of Alpine (1st time there, I do remeber it was a blast camping in the far lot etc, and that whole trip was insane!) ...recall thinking Akron was lame? It seemed like altemont with burning tires and wierd shit, but a, that might of been something I ate?? and/or the comparative let down after Riverbend? Remember Dylan came out to jam but it wasn’t happening.....have never heard this show because of my memories, perhaps I should at least give it a spin sometime.... not familiar with 6/22, will have to check it out.... 1978; I’ve tried again to get jazzed by this box, (have listened to 1st, 3rd and 5th so far), but meh, imho it’s white bread...perfectly fine shows etc, I like them (3rd is fav so far...) their just not wierd/psychedelic enough to move me. Of course that’s how I feel in general about the Mickey Godchaux Band.....I’m sure I won’t feel this way about the new Box!! 7-4-87; nother one I recall feeling was lame and the overall vibe was pure shit show??? Got so turned off by summer shit winds tour,(Alpine, Wonderland, Chrotchfester, Boston) combined with choices of venues in the fall, I sat out fall tour.....luckily Hampton 3/26-28/88 rekindled the hope. Did like Chrotchfester show..... 7/4/89; still really dig this one, perhaps tour favorite, or 7/17/89.....both were great shows, 7/4 being home base in those days was great fun. Alpine was great show, bit less fun (personal experience/logistics etc, not the show it self) So Dave WTF......tap, tap, tap hear our collective feet tapping, waiting......for number 27....... Received 23 I think it was 1/22/78 on August 1st last year. If they follow the usual timelines, they ought to be dropping this one sooner than later. Hurry up ya bastids, sone of us have nothing else to look forward too, lol, and we NEED A FIX!!! That is all. Remeber, “Dancing is a contact sport, have fun but be safe” And keep hydrated, and ware your sunblock it’s nasty out there.... Party on Garth!

Half way through JPB’s, good so far, about what you’d expect, nothing crazy.... Selvins......not enough time for full comment, but generally ok book, could of been good if he’d get out of the way of his own coffee breath as Jon Evison would say....obviously he has an axe to grind with the Lesh’s...There was so much material to work with that a great book could of just reported things without the constant little digs and his personal opinions etc. There where also just enough factual mistakes to question his authority on the subject. For someone who says he’s not a head, but has had all this access and experience on their beat, it occasionally felt like he was just another wanker trying to cash in. I did like how he eventually tied it together in a positive spin about FTW, and how WE the fans made it happen etc, even if I disagree about the choice of Trey and his critique of the music. He did capture the essence of the excitement about the shows, and the travel plans etc. I remember feeling like all that was what made it fun.....reliving the whole excitement and process/preparations etc e.g., where are we going to watch, what are we going to do etc.... As far as surprises, I probably knew about half of it, or most of the general nonsense that was going on. I guess I was enlightened about others participation/roles in the whole mess, and why certain thinks we’re said and done. But of course those opinions are partly based on his obviously biased view, since no one inside has, or probably never will correct the record.....would like to go back and read some of the other books over again now......also, need to read his Altemount to see if this is always his style, or is he really have it out for the Lesh’s? Remeber folks, these guys are just people, not gods. So just like the rest of us, sometimes their going to do dumb/shitty stuff, especially when your scared and your future is completely up in the air etc. I’m not condoning some of the behavior, just saying that when you look at the big picture objectively, you can perhaps understand things a little.... Most importantly, we can’t let any of this diminish what it’s really all about, the MUSIC!! “Sweet, sweet, music....”

Wow I actually totally forgot that we have another Dave's coming in the next several weeks. We are beyond spoiled. Hmm, I'm always bad at guessing these things. Doesn't seem like TPTB care about what year or lineup is "due" (nor should they be), but if you ask me, I think we're going to get a show from 68 or 69. This has already been a pretty incredible year for releases so why not keep it going. Hope everyone had a great 4th (or in Dave Rock's case, a nice Wednesday). I'm still full from eating too many burgers and still have a ringing in my ear from the fireworks. Truly a sign of a good holiday.

Ahh, great board shop back in the day..... I always liked the old saying “there are three sides to every story, side one, side two, and the truth which lies somewhere in the middle ; ) Probably apropos of the book also? As for the Fourth, wierd day, fires all around us, hot and windy, so all Fireworks canceled. It looked surreal, all dark like the flat light in December....HOA just stained the deck and this morning there is ash all stuck to it.... also, back to work today so had to dial the “fun” back.... Hope all y’all had a great day!

Once again I have to say it. Why don’t they take pre-orders before they run production, then guestsmste what they’ll need for the rest of general market and individual sales etcThis way everybodygets a copy and they don’t get stuck with too much overstock, although some would be good for Johnny come latelys etc... Also, not having limited/numbered etc might remove some of the greed/resale factor...so people wouldn’t be buying multiple copies for resale...

I feel like an 80’s release is coming and the year I would like to see is 1982. If I could pick the show it would be 8-10-82 from Iowa City with an unreal Eyes among other gems. Best guess for an 82 release would be 10-10-82 Frost. I love all of the speculation around the time of a new release. We are spoiled silly and I am happy for whatever may be coming our way.

Good post-I have never heard of the tv show "Route 66". But your quote provides a great example of how there often (always?) more ways of looking at any given situation than is immediately apparent. I am suddenly reminded of an old Todd Rundgren song -I can't remember what its called, but I'm pretty sure its on "A Wizard, A True Star", The chorus goes-"You want the obvious-you'll get the obvious" or some such.

Camembert is not what it used to be, since now in France, they allow pasteurized milk camembert to be labelled as "Appelation Controlee"Dead content? Sure: John Mayer is like a pasteurized Jerry. Still really good, but not the real thing.
