WHAT DEAD HEADS HAVE BEEN SAYING ABOUT...

    NEW HAVEN 5/5/77
"Here is a prime example of the saying ‘the whole is greater than the sum of the parts’ … It’s called synergy and the Dead wrote the book on it.”

    BOSTON 5/7/77
“The music they laid down brought me places I had not been before.”

    CORNELL 5/8/77
“...the single best rock performance anywhere, anytime, by anyone.”

“There was just some kind of magical connection this night between the band members and the band and the audience - some texture, or some type of cosmic or celestial force is in the room.”

"This show is, was, and always will be Mecca.”

    BUFFALO 5/9/77
"...an awesome display of the Dead’s captivating power"

If you've been following this site for quite some time, then you will know we are often flush with hyperbole when it comes to our releases. We can't help it, really - for we, like you, are Grateful Dead fans above all else. Just like you, we've spent countless hours debating the merits of show over show, year over year. We've kept a watchful eye on your wish-lists and carefully considered how to make - excuse the cliché - your dreams come true. And once we've made our commitments, we are steadfast in our determination to conjure up those dreams fully-formed and nearly perfect. Sometimes these heights cannot be reached without physical and cosmic elements aligning, and that, dear friends, is why it has taken so long for us to bring you THE ONE and the epic shows that surrounded it. No need for even the slightest embellishment here, 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell University: Ithaca, NY, has for decades, been THE resounding favorite; you've said it yourselves - the "holy grail" of Grateful Dead shows. Thanks to the passion and perseverance of Dead Heads like you, we are beyond pleased to finally be able to present this show and its brethren, the fabled four of Spring '77, in sonically pristine condition.

Limited to 15,000 individually numbered copies, MAY 1977: GET SHOWN THE LIGHT is a collection of what is unanimously believed to be the most sought-after previously unreleased complete shows the Grateful Dead ever played. Collected, traded, and debated for decades, "the beloved Golden Trinity" of Boston, Ithaca, and Buffalo, along with their New Haven prelude, have inspired fans to "get on the bus," converted critics, and even garnered national attention (Cornell was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry). But until now, you've never really heard them quite like this!

The Dead is in the details... how serendipitous is it that the notorious Betty Boards were returned to the archive just in time for the 40th anniversaries of these shows? Lovingly sourced from these well-reputed recordings, we invite you to experience four utopian shows just like they happened, to "be inside the music" as engineer Betty Cantor-Jackson intended. Whether you listen to each night on its own or imbibe the whole lot at once, we suspect you'll hear why every note mattered. Much like we were, you will be hard-pressed to determine which of these fine documents - will it be the understated but nuanced New Haven, Boston's festive fantasy vibes, the monumental catharsis of Ithaca, or Buffalo’s dreamy exuberance - is truly "the best." Does it really matter? We think not.

Due May 5th, we anticipate that this revelatory boxed set will sell out. Your best bet is to pre-order it now, then sit back, relax, and enjoy all the exclusive content we'll be rolling out over the next few weeks.

Looking for something a little more byte-sized? The collection will also be available for HD digital download in FLAC and ALAC, exclusively at dead.net, on release day.

    Gap Between Songs?
Received my box yesterday. Very pleased with the whole package and the sound. Haven't found any skips yet, but...it seems there are very brief gaps between songs that should have seamless transitions. So far I've noticed it on Cornell Scarlet-->Fire and Lazy Lightning-->Supplication. Has anybody else noticed it? I don't recall experiencing this on the hundreds of hours of other live GD discs that I have.

Come to Daddy, on an inside straight! Opening the box I felt a little like Charlie opening his last Wonka Bar and finding a Golden Ticket. The music's excellent but Billy's vocals seem a little high in the mix. (+G)

Have imported all 11 cds into iTunes and have listened to the first two shows. Keeping my synapses crossed - no skips or other problems so far. I find Nagaoka Anti-Static Inner CD Sleeves are a good investment. I place the cds in these before returning them to a box or cardboard slipcase. For car listening I burn cdrs so I don't have to worry about any damage or thieves.

First, let me say how truly amazing the music is here. I was looking at Deadlists earlier, and thinking about Gordon Sharpless and others who managed the database, and thinking about Owsley, Betty, etc. How lucky are we that such an amazing band came together and others had the foresight to document it all--each committed to doing their part in the best quality possible; not just "good enough," but the best possible? I was fortunate enough to get the box edition, and the care and beauty are extraordinary, but I do agree that consistency in size with prior editions would have been desirable. Even July '78 and the earlier May '77 were close enough in size... I am not worried about bringing this box into the car of course, but these comments are worth consideration for the next box coming down the line! Many thanks to David L and Rob Eaton! Thoroughly enjoying every note!

Nice but isn't made for handling, just looking at.CD-R copies for daily use required. Spinning 5/5 Sugaree now and it's awesome! Spun 5/8 last night in this CD order 2>3>1 and really noticed the improved sound quality on set 1 (or was it because I had more beer in me?). It's good that the AME is available, these need to be available to everyone. So, when do we get 5/4 and 5/18 to fill in the gaps?

Yesterday. I was gonna leave work early, got hung up but the brown truck was pulling away as I rolled up. Immaculate. Spent 45 min ripping it and tucked the box away. I might toss some of the CDs in my car but agree the packaging, while intriguing, is cumbersome. But damn, the music is everything and more than I expected it to be! Just got to the 5/8 Scarlet--->Fire and am loving it!

Well maybe competence and thoroughness should be considered in hiring web designers. Still huge blood pressure raising problems and frustration in ordering. There should be a health warning against older people ordering; I wonder if anyone trying vainly to order for the 49th time dies in the process. credit cards are impossible to use since a name on the credit card is required, but the designer failed to provide a space for the name! Only alternative was pay pal, which seemed to have gone thru, but then I received a notice from Rhino of payment failure. Then I got a confirmation of the order from Paypal, but not Rhino. God knows if I have succeeded in ordering this box set, but I should know too. What a mess. I give up.

My question is this recorded on 2 track or multi-track? also does anyone else know if the 1st may 77 box set and the stand alone To Terrapin release also 2-Track recordings? they kinda seem to have the same audio feel as Dicks picks 29 and those were 2-track recordings.

Luckily I had no problems ordering my copy, other than having to enable cookies for dead.net on my browser..... The price does seem excessive, as usual...... Guess there's no loyalty to us Dead fans, in not trying to extort every last dollar out of us.... Not how I'd treat my customers......

After several failed attempts to buy this box in the first few hours that it went on sale, I gave up and waited until the next day. In the early morning hours on Friday, I was successful. It's probably will arrive about the dame day as Dave' Picks 22. I think the $139.98 is a fair price, but Rhino/Warner Music Group should give registered users of dead.net a discount of free shipping, and guests should pay that shipping charge. Add my state's sales tax, and the total amount is almost $15 more than the list price. These are great shows and I'm glad the original tapes finally found their way back to the Grateful Dead vault and that these 4 shows were released.

Like the Orpheum 1976 Dave's Picks 4 CD set, similar result with 5.4.77, probably pegged for 2018 subscription with bonus This announcement was pretty obvious, only thing in question would it be a box set of Winterland March 1977 or May 77. Primo stuff Returned GD reels also have some more from late 1979 and Fall 1980 ~ Brent era Dave's Picks 21 sounds amazing, can't wait to hear the December 1971 recordings Dave's Picks 22 ? How about 10.29.77 ? That one is really high energy. Also would like 11.6.77 OR an offering from the Pacific Northwest run September 1977 - October 1977. Future Box set after May 77,,,, bring on the BCT run from August 1972 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And save some shelf space Fall 1989 ~ Philadelphia Spectrum

The returning. I hope BCJ got a little slice of the pie on this, she deserves it. I don't know the inside story, but it seems right. I saw the tweet from Rolling Stone and snuck in under the gun, about 5 mins before the official email went out. Then all hell broke loose, and the site was flumuxed till last night. I'm surprised this isn't sold out yet. Looking forward to getting the box a day or so after my birthday, May 4th. Buffalo is the one for me. Can't wait to hear that Peggy-O and The Music Never Stopped from that night. Just pure swing perfection. I wonder if they did anything to the time between songs for Cornell. Aren't there some fairly long pauses? Also, that 2nd disc of Buffalo is a little weak, guess they couldn't fit everything on 2 discs.

Why do I have to log into Dead.net and then when I pre-order it takes me to Rhino.com to start the process over - and not only that but I have to provide all of my contact info - which Dead.net already had on file. Whatever idiot designed Rhino's ordering page should be taken out back and shot (probably someone's idiot nephew as someone said already). I already have to go to the DMV today and deal with them this just made my day so much "nicer"

my brother's family ordered the Dave's Pick subscription for me for Christmas, but instead of sending the confirm to them Rhino sent it to me so I knew what I was getting for Christmas. For some reason they are sending emails to an email address I no longer use - and hasn't been on file with GD for years. When I called Rhino about the issue they said they'd fix but it is February and so far no luck (oh and they sent the first Dave's Picks to my brother's address not mine). Top notch customer service.

To my ears, It sounds like Maybe Dave decided to throw in an audio patch so that for a few seconds the listener can get the reverb from Barton Hall on the sweet sweet part of the Garcia Lick, and I totally dig it, what sounds strange is how at like 9:35 it cleans up and sounds quiet. If I was betting man, and especially after listening to the Dave's Pick #20...As well as the Amazing quality Aud. recording of this show over at Archive.Org. Me thinks it is a few seconds of Audience Patch. Just wish the volume or the reverb would have lasted a little longer.

i would have tried to order another and then looked in my email, rhino.com webstore sent order confirmation, even though it looked like a fail, usually after order submit is complete,, it will go to an order summary with confirmation number. in this case it by-passed that and said my cart was empty... appearing as if it had crapped out at the end My opinion you guys should be fine, they will see your comments here and it would be nuttier than squirrel turds if they shut out any one that posted in the comments section. I get the feeling this is going to sell out before end of month So now that 5.8.77 is on vinyl ? will there be an RSD release in April ? really hope so,, and hope its from 1966 ! Okay, so this does feel like a bit of a cash grab considering the superb-sounding Betty Boards long available for the Godhead of Grateful Dead shows (father, son, and holy spirit; 5/7,8,9), but the slight improvements in mastering and the extra goodies make this one worthwhile. If you're like me and you already own all of the Spring '77 releases and boxed set that have come before, you might as well, might as well. I've always been partial to the Dick's Picks 29 shows as 'best of tour,' but nothing can beat the insane lysergic jamming on Barton's "Dancin' in the Streets" or "Row Jimmy." Take my money please.

I had guessed it would sell out in 24 hrs, like the recent Daves Picks- but I think website issues might have hindered that. I really hope they still do an April RSD release as well... Dave keeps saying that "theres a lot of really cool stuff coming up" so Im hoping that he wasnt just referring to these releases. Not to sound ungrateful, I mean this is May 77 we're talkin about.

6100 left as of right now. Yesterday logic told me that a release like this would take at least days to sell out but I was in panic mode like everyone else non the less. I am glad that it has worked out for everyone and we finally have this release to look forward to. 20,000 may have been a better count for this one so I am telling all my friends to grab one while they can, but the other 3 shows may end up being released individually down the road. If you hit purchase and then your cart shows empty, it's empty because you successfully made the purchase.Do what mbarilla says and check your email. Also, be patient, the website is quite slow at moving to the next screen. That was part of the problem yesterday, people kept clicking on the buttons thinking that the first mouse click didn't go through, but it did, followed by additional clicks which overloaded the system. It was a self-inflicted denial of service attack. You can tell by people's posts from yesterday that were posted 3-5 times because they kept resending it, thinking that then first one didn't go through. At one point I had 8 Boxes in my cart because I kept hitting the add to cart button but wasn't getting a response, then all of a sudden had 8. Had to close my browser and delete the history to get rid of them.

It is true, I have not listened to these shows. Why? 1977 has never been a go to year for me. I am hoping this box will change that. Now I do own the other 77 boxes. I have only listened to songs not the entire thing. Don't think I haven't tried. It's hard to describe, but after a few songs I feel the need to move on. My goal this weekend is to listen to one complete show either from Winterland 77 or The May 77. Any suggestions on which show? Thanks Now for something completely unrelated: I need to get my hands on the bonus disc from the Cleveland '73 that was included with Denver '73. That 40 + minute Dark Star is killer.

You should have received a confirmation screen at the time of your order and a follow up email. Another way to check is see if the charge has hit your credit card. At some point before things were directed to Rhino I seemingly made it through the order process - name, address, billing info, and submitted it - but after about 30 seconds the connection dropped before it looked like the purchase was completed, and my guess was nada zilch zip zero. Sure enough, after about 15 minutes of no email and not being able to reaccess the check out page I called my credit card company and there was no charge against it - the charge would have posted at the same time as a successful order. Once Rhino was involved I was able to lock a copy in! Thank you Rhino!

I also hope they do a RSD release, i was bummed they did not have on on black Friday. I would love for it to also be previously unreleased music. I would rather have the opportunity to get something that has not already came out in a recent box.

Aaaaaaaand now when I click on Add To Cart, I get a message from my computer telling me I should not continue to that site (the purchase page) because it will expose my computer to malware. This get more and more f'd up at every juncture. I'm sorry, Warner/Rhino/GD, I cannot proceed to put my credit card info into a site with malware. WTF?
