Wow, what a day, got to see Grace Slick and was turned onto the Dead. I snuck backstage at expo, I think it ws teh youth pavillion or gardens or something, if you could call it that and bummed a cig from Pigpen and got a light from Grace while Jack, Jorma and Billy stood by. I started talking about Vancouver and the like and everyone just kept nodding OK and smiling and giggling a little and not saying much at all. I later found out most were dosed that day. Concert never really got going, too many people and the bands were all pretty laizzez-faire in their attitudes to do much to fast. I was 16, visiting Montreal with family to see Expo for the summer and disallusioned with the middleclass world I came from. I left there for Vancouver BC and decided to be a hippie and here now 40 years later I am just that, still, and play in band that does Dead and Garcia Band music. Then names of bands over the years doing Dead were, Dust, DUSTCOVER, JAMBASSADORS and THE FAR SIDE BAND (at Oregon Country Faire) Thanks for all the good times and all the great shows I saw on the west coast. Sorry Ed, I meant the only DAY they came in Montreal, Québec. I read about bad vibes after the show at le Jardin des Etoiles. I was 13 at that time, been to Expo 67 more than 50 times but miss that one. I was 30 miles from there and have to hitchyk(not sure of the word) to go there. Listen to the band a year after for the first time from my cousin record collection. Hooked since that time. As a lighting tech, I worked in that place a lot and and my fellow soundman let me put on a lot of great Dead music in the PA. Take care, Richard

I spent a week at Expo with my brothers and father. One day we heard there was going to be this free concert, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Apparently they were in town for a show that night, and had nothing better to do than set up and play an impromptu show. I was a pretty hip 15, had seen The Byrds two years before on their "Turn! Turn! Turn!" tour, and was pretty psyched. I was more into the Airplane than the Dead, but as far as my brothers and I were concerned, we were not gong to do anything else, for sure. It has been a long time, and many dreams and brain cells have come and gone since that day, so I can't even remember which band played first, but I do remember the encore. Imagine combining these bands, at that time. Three drummers, two amazing bass players at the peak of their powers, all those guitars, all those voices - the question, really, was what would they do? They got a groove going, Jerry and Jorma traded licks for a while - it seemed like eternity but it was probably just about ten minutes - then Marty Balin grabbed a mike and sang, "Let me tell you 'bout my baby!" They did the first verse of "Gloria," led the crowd in a "G-L-O-R-I-A Gloria!" chant for a couple of minutes, then Jerry and Jorma took off and explored the cosmos for a good long while, and never really came back to finish the second verse. It was a magical, transcendent moment for me. Even though I saw the Dead dozens of times after this, and the Airplane a month after Woodstock (in a little college gym, for $3), and even got to hang out with Paul Kantner and Grace Slick once, this was a touchstone moment for me. I have been unable to find a tape of this show. I am a bit baffled as to why - perhaps because it was spur of the moment, unannounced, no tapers were present - but if anyone ever hears of a tape being available, please let me know. And by all means, turn your amps up to 11!

WOW, what a day!!! My best friend and I were 16 and experiencing our first summer being out of school with a car and driver's license, so we drove up to Montreal from Connecticut to see Expo 67 on Aug 6, 1967. After wandering around for a few hours, we heard over the PA about a free concert at the Youth Pavilion with the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. We were thrilled to hear this and quickly made our way over there to get a second row seat right in the center!
The Dead opened and we really liked the sound but I don't remember many details. Next Jefferson Airplane played and we sang along with many of their songs. But the absolute best was when Grace Slick sang White Rabbit! I had chills and when she sang the last few lines, WOW!
