this was actually Dec. 31. New Year's Eve. No Bill Graham but a small mirror ball rising, emulating his spirit. It was a sad moment. we all shine on

they showed a film at setbreak of all? past NYE moments, very very cool. any chance of getting that out to the masses??

To me, the New Year's extravaganza seemed purposely way out of sych, a kind of back-handed tribute to the organizational skills of the late Bill Graham, as if to say "We can't do it without him!" And it was the last GD NYE...

I believe this is the only New Years show with only one encore song. Heaven's Door.

This was my first show. Actually I was in the parking lot hearing the show over loud speakers. Taking in all the sights and sounds of this new (to me) culture. I fell in love and never missed a local show till the end. Nag champa takes me right back to that moment. And listening to Knockin OHD softly leading me in to one of my first trips while on the ride home, heavenly!!!

This show was kind of disappointing and sad, since Bill Graham had just passed and he was the KING of NYE. I remember throngs of seats saved with nobody around. We got there as early as we could but all those seat savers took everything in the lower seating bowl.

Sing me away. Turn back the years. Sing me back home, before I die. Thank you Ron, Bill, Jerry, Keith, Brent, Vince, Donna, Billy, Phil, Bobby, & Mickey. Thank you for a real good time.

When I heard about Bill's passing I knew the guys would never do another NYE show after this one. I didn't get any tickets in the lottery so I flew from Chicago without any. Me and my friend had no luck finding any and it was just about show time when in one of our loops around asking anyone and everyone for spare tickets. Desperate and not willing for our trip to be in vain we started offering $300 dollars for a ticket. Still no takers. So we see this older short asian woman and this young big beefy white guy neither of whom looks like they belong there. My friend asks if they have extra tickets and she hesitated for a second. My friend Gypsy sensed it and started telling her our story hpw we had flown all the way from Chicago and just had to see the show etc etc. I'm standing their speechless. The big beefy white guy is trying to convince her to keep walking at a steady pace away from the scene. Gypsy pulls out the cash and says please help us! And lo and behold she pulls out 2 tickets from her purse and takes the cash then walks on. I can't remember if she even spoke. My friend was so excited jumping up and down and hugging me and everyone that by the time I told him who it was she was almost out of sight. He still ran down a side aisle to get in front of them and look again. Then he saw it and was even more excited. I could write a book about the show itself. I really really liked the opening acts especially Babatunde Olatunji. His dancers on stage were very interesting and cool. Jerry was on fire.. literally.. ok..I think it was just Rosebud on fire. Awesome set list. Worth every penny I spent on the trip.

My roommate and I had been waiting for friends to arrive from Mendocino before driving from Sacramento to Oakland, but they were several hours late, and finally, we had to move...only to find ourselves in the lane right next to them on I-80 right past the Carquinez Bridge! I really enjoyed Bela Fleck & the Flecktones-had never seen or heard them before-there's something about banjo playing that stirs a primal chord deep inside me; perhaps it was listening to my great-uncle play as a small child. Got pick-pocketed by scammers in the break before the Dead played-a really sexy woman in a VERY low-cut dress walked up to me in the concourse as I was waiting in line and gave me a hug. I barely noticed being jostled by others trying to walk thru the lines, but when I got to the front of the line, I discovered that my wallet, with my cash, which had been there when I got up from my seat, was now gone...hopefully, karma has caught up to those individuals. We drank champagne (warm) in the parking lot after the show with Doug Irwin until the cops kicked us out, then had New Year's morning breakfast at Rudy's in Vallejo on the way home...good times!

My last NYE show with Jerry. Without BG it just wasn't the same. It was a very strange and somber moment when it struck midnight and he wasn't there.

I was invited to this show by Dennis McNally, the publicist for the Dead at that point. But when I got there, he put me in that area in front of the stage between the stage and the audience and...my date and I were the only two people there!! It was somewhat exhilarating and embarrassing at the same time. I mean, I didn't expect the special treatment. So very cool. Thank you again Dennis for the once in a lifetime view!! Mimi :D

The dancing in section 222 was spiraling to a peak with The Other One. Great memories.

I have this on an 8 track are there other recordings of this anywhere?

I must have seen 75% of the shows in 91. Great year. We won tickets for the show in Shoreline, probably in the August run. It was something so simple. The Dead had a booth at the show. Maybe it was for rex Foundation? I think you had to throw a velcro ball and hit within a target, but they let you buy a bunch of balls. It was so easy. We must have got New Years Eve tix for $10 or $20 in balls. I'd guess if you asked a veteran, they'd say this was the weakest NYE show, but I'll take it. Good times! (The Dead used to do Rex Foundation raffles at the shows too. The band would sign some tix. I got a Bobby ad Phil autograph that way)
