Great show
I think this was the band's 1st time in the big arena !! Having played the smaller Felt Forum many times and the boy's did not disappoint!! There was a major sound glick during the NFA but this show still ranks in my top 15!! Rogue
polar opposites...
I remember this show really being quite awful. I guess it was the huge audio problems that set the tone for the evening. But the funny thing was the next night they came back and kicked serious ass. These two shows were polar opposites. That was one of the things I loved about the Dead... when they were off they were awful but when they were on... watch out. Good thing they were mostly on. Except for the really big gigs.
First show - enough said
Friend's older sister took us - seats were basically behind the stage but that didn't matter; i was mesmerized by the surging, pulsing, bouncing crowd and simply blown away. I think I might have known two songs at the time, truckin and casey jones, and nothing of the culture but the next day I went and bought Live Dead and Skull and Roses... and started thinking about ways I could see more shows.
Never got off the bus from that point on.

You can never tell...
For years I didn't think much of this show and didn't seek a recording of it. I went to the show in Philadelphia 2 days before. Many repeats from the Spectrum, sound issues and mixed feelings about the Dead finally playing MSG. Prior to 1/7/79 the band, Bob in particular, said they would never play MSG. Never is a long time. A few years back I finally listened to the show again. I enjoyed Jack Straw, Passenger, Miracle-Shakedown. After listening again I thought the Eyes was better than the prior show. Thinking back on it now, there must have been enoyable highlights because I had to go the next night and scalp tickets!
