This is one I'll never forget. Met a VW bus of some cool Heads from Oregon and we spent the weekend camping and jamming. Friday night there were over 100 Heads sleeping on a school ballfield...kind of funny when the sprinkler system kicked on at 4:00 am. We found a nice spot in the woods just before daylight. Wicked hot show on a cool, crisp starry night. I've still got the long sleeve purple and green splash and swirl tye dye I needed to buy during the break...and then soaked it during the 2nd set. The whole show was a fast-paced break-neck-speed dance and smile thriller...from the Hell and Victim openers through the Uncle John's>Morning Dew come back for One More Saturday Night encore was simply astounding. Wow!...Thanks again!*!

I was a 24-year-old junior at Arizona State University that fall semester. A few months earlier I'd made friends with another student, Mary S., a Head of the Dead and other things. She from Maryland, I from Ohio. A few of her friends were living in Santa Cruz that fall of 1988. Mary didn't have a car, I did, and she asked if I wanted to go to the October 1 show at Shoreline. It was only a 17-hour drive if we left after classes on Friday afternoon. Of course I accepted. We drove all night and by the following morning arrived in Santa Cruz, almost totally crazed by exhaustion. I was a neurotic asshole at the time (still tend to be), and Mary put up with my annoying stick-up-my-ass behavior on the drive to Santa Cruz (I stupidly took 101 up the coast instead of 5 through the valley), on the drive north to the show, during the show, and on the drive home to Arizona. God bless her. God bless the Dead and everyone at that show and all their shows. Mary snagged a friend to take back with her to Arizona and my car battery almost died in the desert, but we made it home. I never became a Dead fan but I felt the magic. I still have a stick up my ass and regret not enjoying youth more fully than I did. That was 24 years ago and I'll remember those three days until my departure date.
