    7/7/78/ & 7/8/78
as with marye, not my first dead shows but my first Red Rocks shows. My girlfriend (now wife) had seen Joni Mitchell there and raved about the venue, and then we got to see the Grateful Dead there. It was magical. The massive red rock formations towering on each side of the audience and a lower rock wall cropping behind the band. And we could look out over Denver, when you walked up to the top of the venue. With the view of the clouds and weather blowing in.....And the sound.... but I really think that the band had a better view, with the rock slabs flanking the wild crowd and the sky rolling by behind us. A transportive location if there ever was one. A natural wonder, a fantastic elevated amphlitheatre, and an altogether mystical spot for the Dead to work their delights!

... some guy fell from the rocks and died at this show. That's why they moved the next two nights (originally scheduled to be 3 nights at the Rocks) to McNicols Arena in Denver. They placed a model of a skeleton next to Jerry on stage for those two nights.

I saw all 3 shows at Red Rocks and then drove down to Santa Fe for 2 more. This 3rd Night at Red Rocks was the best of the 5 shows. Great Scarlet/Fire and Baby Blue encore.

One year, two friends and my self, set out for the Red Rocks shows from NJ, no tics, no plans, etc. Once arriving, due to the small nature of the venue, we were unable to get tickets, but found a spot where we could listen, dance and..well you know( thanks Tim). Although I do not recall anyone falling off the rocks,(lucky I remember being there at all), I do remember that two more shows were added at McNichols stadium, reason being heavy rains.

This is the show where someone was blowing kids soap bubbles and when one popped.... in it's place was a helicopter from the evening news... Whew ! Please perform random acts of kindness for your fellow man... Be Kind and pay it forward ! and BE the change you wish to see in the world !

The 1982 tickets said "If rainout, then at McNichols" or something to that effect. Well, that proved to be untrue noting they played the next 2 nights at Red Rocks. And the 2nd night the heavens opened up. I missed the 1st night Red Rocks since after Compton Terrace, the bus I was on went to Denver while the bus my backpack was on went to Santa Fe. 2nd night was incredible with amazing 2nd set Althea and Let It Grow, some St. Stephen teases outta drumz and a Sugar Magnolia that completely blew doors. 3rd night was significant in that after the show I hooked up with a girl I went to high school with back in MD. Still together and now married 22 years.

Red Rocks won the best small outdoor concert venue award so many times that they renamed the award the Red Rocks Award and took them out of the competition. GOAT? Heard 7-7-78 from the parking lot. My user name tells the story for the next night; Wow! The Aug. '78 were classic mellow just back from the recording studio shows and not even a sell out as it was a short time announcement and was in the ticket by mail era so mostly locals. So we got four in a row separated by seven weeks. The '79 shows with the "new guy" Brent were top notch and many of us now would like those released Dave. BTW '80 at Folsom in Boulder (15th anniv.) was no slouch either.
Cheers all!
