    Great Show...Iowa State Fairgrounds - June 16, 1974
On are way west to camp in the north west (US and Canada) for the summer... Remember it looked like rain all day and then the Dead played one of their sun songs and sun was out all day... We said good-bye to our friends the next day, after saying at an old friends farm that night and off we were to see great n/west, just as Jack and Neal had done 20 years earlier...

    Cassius Clay
This was the site of 1 of the Clay (AKA: Ali) vs. Liston bouts. I think it was the phantom punch fight. Anyway, it was a fair grounds that was used as a race track. We got up there the night before with my cousin, his girlfriend and a friend of hers, and headed to the venue early the next day. Despite my call to park far from the venue to increase the speed of departure, we parked right up close. The show was nice, but not very memorable. Roy Buchanan was an opener. After the show we sat in traffic for hours as the cars further from the venue were released first by the local constabularies. As we we waited, the car in front of use started to smoke. I urged our departure, but my traveling companions told me to relax, it was just over heating. I squeezed out the window and trotted away as the car burst into flames. I am the Greatest!

It was my first (and only) backstage experience. Chatted with Keith and Donna on their first Father's Day. On the Interstate back to Wisconsin after the show it seemed like everybody we passed looked like they had been to the show. Ran out of gas at 3:00am and was very late for work on Monday morning. Thanks a lot Val!

We came down from Minnesota and slept in the corn fields to a farmers dismay. During the show the clouds pulled back and the sun shown as on command when they sang "here comes sunshine" and as I remember it this happened whenever they revisited this during the day. The crowd was beautiful and the wall of sound was awesome. The boys played on. My hero's.
