You explained your intent from the very start of your shn/flac vine series .crap it saves a TON of money on postage ! I had to step away from the NNWL vine because someone converted it , Luckily our freind Andy sent me the dvd`s for that one . And I have been walked through Traders little helper and I have walked others through it too . And I am more then happy to help even more understand it and how it works . Just shoot me a PM I`m more then happy to help anyone ..

I feel a little bad now. As everyone probably knows, I am not trying to exclude anyone. I guess that sometimes once you finally give in and do something, you get to thinking that everyone else has already done it. So when I finally decided to start doing lossless, I figured everyone else did it (or could do it). If you don't have a DVD reader, you can't do it, and if you don't have a burner (a la Hippy) it makes it difficult as you have to burn onto CDs, which hold a lot less. But if you do have a DVD burner, let me tell all you luddites (technophobes) it is SO EASY. People use different software, but I highly recommend Trader's Little Helper. One download. Free. All you need. I don't even have an IPod. I don't have a flat screen. I have a mini stereo system (which ONE DAY will be massively upgraded). I am not into technology. And I did it. Many of the 73 shows I have in my lossless vines have already been vined, either by me in my early Cream Filling vine (11/14, 11/17, 11/20), by Bob in his 73 Eurovine (4 Sept shows), or by others (3/28, 3/31, 5/26). But I am willing to start a few WAV vines containing 3 shows each. WAVers should post here the shows they want vined and I will do that. As for 1977, I am going to let someone else do that. Again, much of 1977 has been vined in WAV (Stache Rides 77, most of the May shows, Winterland 77, Fall 77 Parts 1 and 2). I do feel the need to tell you that from MY EXPERIENCE, it will behoove you to make the switch. I wish I had converted to lossless earlier as I am now slowly trying to replace the WAV shows that I have. The number of people who trade WAV is rapidly shrinking, just as cassette traders have in the past. If you just want to have a small collection, WAV is probably fine. If you want a lot of shows, you definitely should do lossless.

I have no interest for much of anything in wav format , however i will be adding to a vine here soon that will be in wav format . I don`t have a dvd burner at this time . But yes if someone wants to convert from a large dvd vine , and make a seprate vine out of it thats cool . Maybe just use part of the name of the dvd vine in the name of the wav vine . like 3-18-xx wav from shn/flac #x or something like that . that might help clear some confusion on the folks signing up for the same shows twice thing . I dunno , just a thought .. But yes we can`t exclude the flacless folks here . I beleive dstache has mentioned that once before ..

    Marye - That's a tough one
I have noticed that the larger vines usually contain shows that have already been vined as smaller versions. The only problem with that I see is that you end up signing up for and receiving the smaller vines without realizing that you already have or will have it from the larger vine - so it's kind of a waste in that sense - waste of postage, time etc. That's why I have created my own spreadsheet to keep track of all the shows I have to avoid repeats. I personally enjoy and look for flac/shn vines. I don't really care how big they are as long as it is flac. But for the folks without flac capabilty (and really it is the folks without DVD-roms because it is so simple to convert flacs, that should not be the problem, it's not being able to read the DVD's that's the problem), I understand that they should be able to enjoy these vines too. So I think the only way around that is like Marye suggests (and dstache has mentioned this too) for someone to take the flacs and convert them into smaller (separate) audio CD vines. Problems I see: 1.How would we know someone wants a particular show converted to wav? How would we know to start a new, separate wav vine? Which shows do you convert? 2. You could have a bunch of small vines come off of one large vine - that seems like it could get chaotic, like someone would need to manage that.. 3. There's really no feasible way to convert an entire flac vine into wavs - going from a couple of DVDs to a stack of CDs, that would be an insurmountable amount of work and postage. If I could find a full time job that would pay me to do that ... hmmmm :-) "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Dust off those rusty strings just one more time. Gonna make em shine."

I am all for someone taking a vine, selecting the best shows, converting them to WAV, and vining them. I have asked that my recent vines be lossless ONLY so that the vines will be less cumbersome and expensive to post. But by all means, please convert these vines to WAV and start a NEW vine. If someone does SHN/FLAC, but can't handle a 4 disc vine, I suggest PMing someone who did sign up and offering to trade. I have lost interest in WAV trading but I am always up for lossless trading. I am especially looking for Fall 79, early 80's and Brent 1990 shows.

Folks, I'm sure I speak for all of us in giving amazed thanks to dstache and his merry crew for the lossless mega-vines they're putting together. Community, collaboration, and love for the music at its best. Way to go! Some folks have privately expressed concern that these huge vines will stifle the growth of smaller ones and we'll lose folks who aren't set up to handle the big ones--maybe they can only handle CDs, maybe they only want a show or two, and the shows will only be available in the huge collections. I'm not telling anybody what to do here, but it seems to me the fix for that is fairly obvious--someone gets the big vine, excerpts it, and vines that. I'm pretty sure no one here is interested in keeping fellow Vineyard folks from vining in the format of their choice. I mention the issue because it's come up once or twice in the background lately. What you guys want to do about it is up to you! Thanks! ME

I looked over my list (this is the smallest its been in months - 26!) and came across vines that are totally dead, trust me, and need to be re-seeded in order for them to continue: 1) 3 from 82 and a 78 too (dead only 3 into the list, sad) I did pm gdhead77 about a re-seed 2) Augusta 10/12/84 3) Buffalo Springfield 4) Santa Fe 83 Then the ones held up by gratefulmikes: 1) Summer 82 2) Greek 84 3) Jimi HendriXmas I spoke with him about a month ago and he was back from being on the road and was going to send out the pile of vines in his possession. Now its a month later and still no movement/communication. Come on gratefulmikes help us out bro! This is just the ones on my list. The overall list is ridiculous. I think dstache has one but I'd also like to consider non-Grateful Dead vines too. Can anybody help re-seed the first 4 on my list?? Please, I'd really appreciate it! I'm always willing to re-seed any lost vines, I just don't have a copy of these yet :( Thanks for your help!! "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. Can't win for tryin. Guys, my computer crashed the other day and I am writing this from a friend's computer (mine is in the shop, supposedly can be repaired, circuit problem). I had that JT show on my list of shows to get, and I think there is another JT show he recorded, either from 75 or 77. Re: the Who, I would check that website we have discussed Lopezz; I bet it is there. And yeah, a second Lampinsky vine will be needed. JT, Supertramp, the Who, and there are a few other good ones I am sure.

Does anybody have 9-23-76 Duke University? One of only seventeen times (according to Deadbase) the Boys played Morning Dew and Wharf Rat. Nice overall set list with a lot of B for A. I have no idea as to the quality of the playing, but I love 76. "That path is for, your steps alone."

I have sbd.backus.14687, but am hesitant to trade or vine it as I grade the sound quality as only B+. I suggest going to archive and seeing if a better version circulates.

I'm gonna comment here because I don't want to piss off BJ or dissuade any non-viners from purchasing it. I am not excited about this release. Just as I have not been excited about most of the releases in the last couple of years. I think the early show is good (3-3.5 out of 5 stars) and the late show very good (4 to 4.5 out of 5). But both already circulate as A SBDs. Can someone who signed up for my 70 vine back me up there on the sound quality, if not the performance quality as well? I WANT to give the Dead some money. I feel that I owe them. But I don't want them to act like I owe them. And that's how many of the recent releases make me feel. This isn't a bad release. And if the show didn't circulate it may even be a good release. But because it already circulates as an A SBD, what's the point? I know, I'm jaded, and the more shows you get, the more jaded you get. BTW, I purchased 30 of the 36 DP's, both Winterland box sets, the 69 Fillmore box, plus many other official releases. I give the Dead money. But now, it has to be for something I really want. A show that doesn't circulate, or a very good or great show that circulates only in subpar sound quality.

I'm sorry you feel jaded, dude. Your reasoning is sound, but... just think of those '77's that came out ... they were all A boards, too, but after the powers that be had their way with them they became absolute pearls!!! I'm really excited about the three disc format - I know that what is available for the 5/15/70 is eight discs (w/ NRPS), but maybe this will be a harbinger for shows that are three discs. We are, but a few, missing the absolute aural richness of these remasters because the HDCD format requires equipment we don't have. I'd like to hear a handful of the early Dick's Picks remastered with todays technology - especially 5/02/70!!! BTW, I can't wait to sample your next Pink Floyd vine - it looks killer. I just d/l'd, extracted, and converted to WAV the Who show. Then I logged in here and see that unclejon already snagged it. Unclejon, if you want to take the lead on a Lampinski AUD part 2 vine, with the 76 Jethro Tull show and the Who show, plus some others, feel free. There is a 75 Lou Reed show that I have been unable to download, and 76 Skynyrd, 74 Marshall Tucker, 76 Boston (whcih would be really cool but the band had sound problems and I don't know how it affected the recording), a 75 Jethro Tull, and a 76 and 77 Supertramp that I haven't tried to download yet. Those are the ones that I think look interesting, but there are others you may find so, and who knows if any others will be unleashed (a 79 Supertramp, Breakfast tour, would be awesome). Let me know if you need any help. Oh, and I got my computer back and it seems to be fine. There was a problem with the circuit board.

I am out of town until next week and didn't want to coop the Lampinski movement from you. It'd take me another week or so to d/l anymore of the shows as I will be slammed at work when I return. I'd be happy to work on it with you though. If you have any of the other shows you mentioned let me know and we can put it together. I'll PM you and we can coordinate? I don’t know how they choose what to release, but 5-15-70 seems a fair choice to me. I am not sure we can expect them to second-guess what everyone already owns or analyse what is out there. What is often frustrating is not knowing exactly what is and is not in the Vault and so not knowing what they could have released (9/23/76 apparently is not in the vault unfortunately). Many of us have been howling for full shows and we have 3 or 4 discs with almost two full shows (albeit chopped up and mixed up). What tempts me every time a new RT comes out is the sound quality. I ended up buying an HDCD compatible player last year thanks to EBay. Maybe the Dead have shares in Microsoft (who own the HDCD patent). There is also some special feeling about having the CD set on the shelf, even thought I don’t care much for the RT packaging. Maybe instead of getting stressed about the official releases that duplicate circulating shows we should instead be grateful that there is often a free alternative for those short of $$. Plus you get an extra Deep Elem Blues that is not on any of the circulating recordings or on any of the published setlists that I have seen. How can you resist THAT? ;-)

RT vol2 #4 and I don't understand why they chop it all up and jumble the song order - like parts of May 26th spliced in with parts of May 27th. That doesn't make sense to me but whatever. I do like the last couple releases- 11-15-71 and 12-28-79 that were complete shows with the songs in the correct order. I personally would rather compromise a bit of sound qaulity in order to get the show unaltered. That's just me though... Like I have said before, I support the band by seeing them live and I do that a lot!! :-) "Lazy lightning you say you never strike the same place. I want a double dose in any case" ... (just a thought, if we write the vine on the outside of the envelope it might avoid these types of scenarios). anyway, the vine I currently have contains the following shows: 4-23-84 6-26-84 6-30-84 each show is two CD-Rs of FLAC files. it was mailed to me from a fellow viner in Alaska. if anyone knows which vine this let me know, I will look it up and get it mailed out ASAP! thanks

On some message boards, the "last log-in" date is shown beside the poster screen name. If we could see when some of these folks last logged in, that would help in figuring out if someone is reliable or not. I've got some '95 soundboards that I may plan to vine in the next month. I am a little hesitant because they are not in flac format. They guy who sent them to me left 1 second gaps between tracks.

And it turns into a big jam session. This has 27 songs on 2 CDs. From Elvis playing solo (in first four songs) to adding the wide variety of friends that showed up to play with him. I'll post a 4 show "best of" within the next week. I still have to listen to 2 more (4/15 and 16). I don't have the last show (4/17) of the tour or the late April and May California shows, but the latter aren't really part of the tour anyways. So far, I think 3/31, 4/5 and 4/6 are the best. I'm looking forward to listening to the final 2. 4/15 has a great set list (2 of Brent's best, Blow Away and I Will Take You Home, as well as Franklin's Tower, China/Rider, Playing, Terrapin and if that is not enough Dew). This will be like most of my other "best of" vines, meaning there will be 1 FLAC DVD, I will convert and burn to CD 1 show, and the first 3 people will each need to convert and burn 1 show.
