"The Grateful Dead picked up their instruments and hit the first note with perfection. They never missed a note for the next three and one-half hours. People followed the flow of the tunes. Down on the floor in front of the stage was a sea of heads keeping time with the music. No one sat still. No one, except the youngsters behind us sat still. They were still and stunned." - The Power County Press

And what a stunner it was, that show at the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise, ID on September 2, 1983. Dave's Picks Volume 27 contains every stitch of music from this mid-80s show (our first in this series), one that's as good as any other in Grateful Dead history. When the Dead were on, they were ON! Straight out the gate with a definitive take on the old standard "Wang Dang Doodle," the band swiftly switches back to a setlist of yore, firing off 70s staples like "Jack Straw" and "Brown-Eyed Women" and wrapping things up with a terrific trio of "Big Railroad Blues"/"Looks Like Rain"/"Deal" (don't you let that epic guitar solo go down without you). Primed for the second set, they tackle the complexities of "Help>Slipknot!>Franklin's" with heart and ease. It's clear there will be no stopping their flow - Bobby and Brent hanging in for a fantastic pre-Drums "Jam" and Jerry and Bobby in the zone on a not-to-be-missed melodic "Space." Not a skipper in the whole lot!

Dave's Picks Volume 27 has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman and it is limited to 18,000 individually-numbered copies*.

I actually like some of Steal Your Face, especially the version of Mississippi. I always thought that one, and the Promised Land, sounded great. Those were some of the first versions of those songs I ever heard. Legend has it that Lester Bangs wrote the "steal your money" comment in his review, but many Deadheads have called it Steal Your Money since back in the day when it was a new release! Just a reminder that it's not unusual for some of us to be unhappy with the quality of an official release. And it's funny: If you listen to SYF back to back with this latest Dave's Pick, you'll note a surprising lack of blown lyrics or off-key notes on SYF. Yes, they certainly did things differently in the old days. Skip Spence was also a member of Jefferson Airplane and Buffalo Springfield. If you just can't get enough of the Oar tunes, check out the very weird tribute album, which features everyone from Robert Plant and Tom Waits to Jay Farrar, Beck, and Robyn Hitchcock: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_Oar:_A_Tribute_to_the_Skip_Spence_Al…

This was a part of a collection called "Grateful Dead Records Collection" issued for Record Store Day 2017. The box was a 7500 unit run of 180g vinyl. Included were the albums: Mars Hotel, Wake Of The Flood, & Blues For Allah. I've always parodied the Steal Your Face album title as * Steal Your Money; * Steal Your Underwear. * Steal Your Jams; * Steal Your Car. SYF is not one of my favorites.

I'm not holding much hope for the Credence tape though.. Perhaps if they had used bear acid in that video we wouldn't have had to suffer through Kenny Rogers the country pop star for the last 45 years, but I digress.

I've never actually heard Oar!!, although I have been aware of its reputation for years. Maybe now is the time to check it out. I noticed you mentioned Sun Ra in a recent post, though. I have just got back from London having seen the Sun Ra Arkestra as directed by Marshall Allen-apparently now 94 years old. The concert took place in a beautiful old church, and the music was exceptional, including many Arkestra themes as well as free jazz and full blown swing. From the future to the past and back again. I picked up a few cds, too, including the digitally remastered "My Brother The Wind" from 1969 which, as you probably know features Sun Ra's early experiments with the mini moog. This version also features some extra tracks, including the 17 minute synthesizer solo known as "Space Probe" from 1970. Very far out!

In my mind, the clues point to 10/18/1972. But I guess we will see soon enough. Seriously, this posted four times and there's no delete button?
