An institution in American rock music, the Grateful Dead continue to surprise the ears with new arrangements and altered styles. If their playing continues with the force that was heard in San Bernardino, the spirit of the Dead will live on. - Sun Telegram

We are more than pleased to kick off this year's Dave's Picks series with the much requested and quite spirited complete performance from Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, CA 2/26/77. The Swing ’77 show was a unique beast, unlike any others from this era: as the band’s first concert of the year, it bridged the gap between the new and re-emerging sound of the returning 1976 Grateful Dead and the precision excellence of the spring ’77 Dead. Debuting two of their most intricately crafted songs of the 1970s, “Terrapin Station” (to open, no less!) and “Estimated Prophet,” the Dead demonstrated right from the start of this new touring year that they were not going to be a nostalgia act; they were going to be as adventurous and ambitious as they were at any time in their career.

Join the adventure as they soar through tried and true ("Playing In The Band," "Tennessee Jed"), well-loved covers ("Mama Tried," "Samson and Delilah," "Dancing In the Street"), and epic new jams.

Rounded out with three songs from Santa Barbara, CA 2/27/77, this one was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman.

Dave's Picks Volume 29 is limited to 20,000 individually-numbered copies*.

*Limited to 2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

After seeing Oroborous' reference to picking this one up I decided to give it a spin, another one that I haven't listened to in a long time. Yeah, you will not be thinking about the cost once you settle in for a listen. I am currently listening to the Nebraska show from 2/26/73 and it is some cool, jazz heavy '73 dead expertly recorded by Bill Candelario. I recommend using it as motivation to get that stereo up an running.

I have been using the Last 5's to choose some stuff to listen to lately, in addition to DP 28 I also checked out Hooteroll and the 7/5/78 Omaha show from the July '78 box after seeing them show up in Last 5 lists here. Also been listening to some Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers with the bonus disc, It's Only Rock and Roll, and the Hot Rocks compilations, as well as Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti and Bad Company's first album, stuff my wife sometimes describes as teenage boy music.

Just busted it out in fact. Thanks CaseyJanes. Phil's take on Caution. "At one point, we were standing out there, entranced by the rhythm of the wheels clickety-clacking over the welds of the rails; Billy and I looked at each other and just knew - we simultaneously burst out, "We can play this!" "This" later turned into "Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)," one of our simplest yet farthest-reaching musical explorations. Based on the train rhythm. It had only one chord and was played at a blistering tempo...."
    ....Fuck yeah it was.

Buenos Dias to you as well rockero, dragon eating tail man. Hope your Saturday is going nicely, and same to the rest of you Dead People! I always confuse the Two Oroborous’s, but who is not a wise one who listens to the GOGD on a regular basis?

No doubts about the folks at 3/14 wishing or trippingly feeling that the night would never end, but still an interesting dynamic between song selection and crowd interaction that perhaps you only find randomly at a Dead Show. Also agree with the many meanings of songs. For me and for many I’m sure, that is part of the fun....lyrical meaning tied to current emotional status that is. I recently purchased “Annotated Lyrics” and have been slowly working my way through. Interesting thoughts and literary references on the song lyrics there.

Wrapped up 03/19/90 just now. Highlights for me are We Can Run (maybe my favorite Brent song?), It’s all Over Now. Then Deal to end the first set followed by Box of Rain and a phenomenal Foolish Heart to open the 2nd set. I love all of the 90 shows! Make it a Grate rest of the day folks! Time to change the rusty strings on me old guitar!

Eel is out for delivery. From the description below, it looks like the format Phish uses for their boxes. Minimal, yet convenient. I, for one, like that format. Keeps the cost down too.

Right on Uncle Sam
I'd think most may agree, this thread helped get our collective mojo back.
Whether it was the awesomeness of the 'Schwiiiing' or just that the time was right, the metamorphosis is hard to ignore. I trust it will carry over with the momentum in tow aiming at the prime time rockabilly-fest in 2/3/70.

Peace All
