    It wasn’t me that raised the issue, I only mentioned that one factor that may be slowing sales is the international shipping rate of $16 per item, but it is what it is.
    But beyond that, I never give it much thought.

    Edit: No problem, 1st Show. It’s just I’m under oath, I want no problems with the law.

    I think it was Crow or That Mike he is referring to DR. Had to do a double take myself and go back and see. Certainly an informed opinion running a store. There are tons of resellers on ebay and some of the prices are astronomical but as Colin said that's the free market at work. At those prices there must be a very limited market i.e. those with more money than sense. Makes me wonder if there is a way to protect the artist and maker from reproduction as well. I remember the big stew over cassette decks when they first arrived. And that first file sharing thing, was it Napster? Aren't some movies protected from being copied? But I digress. And clearly mine is an uniformed guess.

    That's an interesting post about the sale of cds, but I can't help wondering if you have mixed me up with someone else! My only comment on the sale of Dave's Picks was thinking that if they don't sell out quickly, then it's not so good, and that in this case it might mean we have had a surfeit of 1977 shows.
    That's a shocking figure, 50% of subscribers being people who buy to sell on in the first ten years. Screws everything up, I would say. But it's not something I usually think about.

    I respectfully disagree with your assessment Daverock but I am curious what your rebuttal would be to the situation I presented. What I want (tons of releases all year long) and what is realistic are two different things. I am a CD store owner and keep a very close eye on what's going on with eBay. As I indicated, there is some guesswork without knowing the specifics of the Rhino deal with the Dead or the budget they have to work with from quarter to quarter.

    What I do know is the sales history and sellout rate going back to Rhino's deal to distribute Grateful Dead. First was the Download Series - it was short lived. Why? It either failed because of file transfers between fans, which undercut sales. Or it was a pilot program to gage interest in the Grateful Dead so they could determine how many CDs to manufacture for each release in what would become the Road Trips series.

    Road Trips failed. It was not Limited Edition. Some will argue it failed because it sold partial shows, but in reality, they course course corrected on that quickly, and I think at least half were complete shows, mostly in the last half of the 4 year Road Trips program. Incomplete shows is not a good argument for the rebranding to Dave's Picks. We do know some things about Road Trips: 1) It failed or they would not have changed their business model to Limited Edition. 2) We also know if failed because they had stock on the shelves long after the program ended. Old stock of original pressings on CD / Record Store shelves is the kiss of death. This is why record stores were allowed to return LPs and CDs after initial shipments. That's how distribution to outlets works. Back in the day, Tower Records agrees to buy a huge number of U2's current release so they can sell it faster and cheaper, which ultimately led to more floor traffic in their store and lower prices. But this model relied on bulk purchasing, which required cash. Stores therefore had an "out" written into their deal, which allowed them to return unsold quantities to Distributers. Trust me when I tell you that turnaround is the main objective for small operations, since there is nobody to return these CDs to. They have their own private "thing" going on here with the Dead and other "expired" artists. Yes they have a large parent company and Rhino itself is nothing to shake a stick at but all of these little divisions still operating budgets and fiscal goals that need to be met, and these get reviewed quarterly in most companies. Road Trips did not survive the "mystery pressing" sales model (meaning we don't know how many CDs they pressed for Road Trips).

    3) Dave's Picks - Limited Edition + Subscription = success. They front-load their sales with subscriptions and sell what's left over. But there is motivation for buyers to subscribe. They save money, they get a bonus disc, and they don't have to worry about missing a release. But look at the small, safe numbers they started with. 12K per release. 48K a year. In steps the resellers. We have no idea how many sales go to resellers, but I would guess 50% of subscriptions went to resellers in the first 10 years of the Dave's Picks program. I've spoken to many of them. Some buy up to 100 units. Rhino does not allow this, but they have they're methods for working around the system. Keep in mind, for eBay seller selling a recent Dave's Picks, he has another copy of the same CD lined up to sell next. In other words, you can't just count the number of Dave's Picks CDs currently on sale. You have to assume most of them have several copies.

    The eBay box set and Dave's Picks reseller's bread and butter is the limited edition AND limited pressing model that Rhino took toward the business. It allowed resellers to hog up the merchandise like Harrison's little piggies and mark up the price. Same thing that's going on with concert tickets, except the home business entrepreneur can get a slice of this pie, because CDs are relatively inexpensive next to concert tickets, and relatively profitable if you can get away with a 50 to 70% mark up. But as I said in my previous post, THE EBAY BUBBLE HAS BURST. The casual go-getter can't get a piece of this market anymore. It's been on the decline for a few years as the Dave's Picks numbers increased in manufacturing, but more to the point, which you might have overlooked Daverock, is the massive increase in taxes and other fees that eBay sellers have to accept. They can no longer NOT pay the IRS. eBay reports their earnings to the IRS for anything over $600 starting this year, in the way of a 1099-K (and anyone looking to make money on ebay selling Grateful Dead CDs is Grossing more than $600).

    The US tax brackets are higher than a few years ago now too. As I stated in my last post, there is simply no money to be made by peddling Grateful Dead CDs on eBay anymore. Where they used to enjoy at least100% profit on the worst selling Dave's picks, maybe 300% profit on average demand Dave's Picks, and up to 600 - 1000% (or more) on the real hum-dingers, they're completely out in the cold now, because they've gone from paying a measly 13% in sellers fees (which they could get away with making back by bumping the CD price up $10 -$15) to 50% in most cases, depending on your tax bracket). And the CDs are no longer in demand, because of the growth / competition of eBay sellers, and the production increase up to 25K now for each Dave's Picks release. They'll be lucky to break even. The bubble burst and we're seeing it now. I also stated it wouldn't impact us overnight, but we'll see production numbers begin to decrease, and maybe an increase in time between box sets. I don't think it's a coincidence that the early bird pricing was extended this year (it may have been the subscription availability in general, I don't recall). One could also argue (and some have) that the demand for the Dead is going down (at least for 1977). This is natural I think, because so much is already available.

    I don't want this any more than any of us. I love all the new releases I can get. But I truly believe a large number of subscriptions were going to resellers, and resellers are leaving this market.

    I must be fairly open minded musically, because I occasionally get comments like:

    S’okay, because I like what I like, and I don’t care if anyone else likes it. I heard a person say to me “you have to see opera Live, to get the beauty of it”. Personally, the vocals are difficult for me to take. Really not big on that Northern European Death Metal either, with all of the low, growling voices that muddle the lyrics.
    And yet, give me 20 minutes of pure cacophony, I’ll love it!!
    It’s a fools errand to tear down something that others like, because the coin has 2 sides.

Only Dave's picks I've seen last a week, which is a bit of a shock to be honest. I've gotten them all from 30 on and this is probably my most anticipated show to be released. No doubt there have been some good ones since then but I thought this one would be gone quickly

RT Vol. 1 No. 1, 1979 - Interesting sound on this. Very dynamic and heavy on the midrange? Vocals not so much. Brent's electric piano (synth?) so bright and loud it hurts. Phil sounds good though.

Glad to hear that folks are getting their Dave's Picks 45 in the mail. I got a shipping notification 5 days ago, but if I click on the tracking number USPS still says they are waiting for the package. This has happened before and I've come home and found the package waiting for me, so who knows.

Thanks to all who've weighed in on why this Pick isn't sold out. Anecdotally I've often found that people wax lyrical about Spring '77 but don't seem to have the same affinity for Fall, so maybe that's a factor. IDK. I just know that I was enjoying the heck out of Dave's Vol 25 yesterday. Pulling out 23 today just to listen to it while it's still January...

Paste that tracking number into the UPS system.
Mine tracked all the way with UPS until it was handed off to USPS.
At that point the USPS system tracked it until it was put in my mailbox today.

Started with 10-2 set 2 since I had a pretty good cassette copy of that show and know it well.

Sounds grate!
And waaaaaay better than the opera.

UPS tells me "A delivery date will be provided as soon as possible", the same message since 1/25/23. USPS just says Status not available. If I hadn't had three prior bouts with Dave's Picks being lost in transit and taking months to get resolved, I'd be less anxious about it. Not too encouraged seeing the shipping address is missing my apartment number, which my billing info definitely has as it's listed twice on the order status page at deadnet. Oh well, plenty of Dead to listen to...

And GOGD DaP 45 Listening Party followed by my own Listening Party to 9/9/72 The Other One, which was a relisten as I listened to it when it was announced, curious at a 34 min Other One a week after the 9/3/72 Folsom one that is filler on DiP 36 9/21/72. It more than delivered, but this time I let the Stella Blue play, and I normally don't care much for '72 Stellas, as they just haven't yet found it, and it's almost exactly perfect in '73; but this one was fantastic. Phil is all over it. Far better than the one 2 weeks before on DaP 24 8/25/72 where Jerry is still searching for the vocal and the guitar voicing (another 30+ Other One on that one, too), but I also believe Jerry was completely wasted at that point. But anyway, I know some like to go in with virgin listens to the Normanized, I just get excited and want to hear some of the highlights of what I will hear in better quality. I also listened to Bird Song and Playing on this venture on 9/9. Saving the rest for May, I suppose.

Hope to hear more good things about DaP 45. I liked the Listening Party, except Jack Straw. Way too fast a tempo. Doesn't need to be funereal slow like Dead & Co, but I like a good loping pace to Jack Straw that builds to a fiery peak, not the double time, frenzied pace of this one. DaP 25 11/6/77 shows how by the end of the tour, they learned how to burn the place down with Jack Straw and keep it about the same tempo, just throw in more and more of the power chords.

I've also had delivery issues in the past.. this was not one of those times. Shipped notification email arrived Jan 25; package showed up today via US Mail (Jan 31). Tracking the package online was useless and seldom updated. Love the liner notes and pictures.. can't wait to spin it.

I always thought "Passenger" had a Stonesy type swagger, and I notice that's played on the first night of this set. They did seem more heavy rock to me in the second half of 1977 compared to the first.

Hi Everybody. For what it's worth, I never received a shipping notification. I just noticed yesterday that USPS was bringing a package to my house, which was delivered with my regular mail. If I didn't look at the USPS Informed Delivery e-mail, I would not have know it was coming.

I always buy the vinyl but I just listened to this and it is good but...
I better decide fast only 5000 copies.
That's what I thought about Light Into Ashes.
And I think it is still available. (Yes, and it was a 7200 copy release)
Could justify Dave's 1 on vinyl because I don't have the CD.
I'm waffling. Where is Dennis' wife's credit card?

Well that was unexpected. Seems a bit of an odd choice for a release to me on the back of Daves 45, featuring shows played only two months before it. I played the cds last month and while I do think it's a great show - both sets - I can't remember thinking there was anything wrong with the sound quality that could be improved by listening to it on vinyl.
I guess buying it would be insurance if the cds become unplayable in a few years, as some of them seem to have become..but otherwise, I'm not so sure.

Ordered. Sorry 1st but that sucking sound was my wife's card being spanked to death. I would have asked her permission but she's been on a conference call. If I wait it may sell out!!!

45 is close, but Dallas is shut down for the second day since we got a 1/2 inch of snow!!! Post Office didn't even come yesterday. Looked like snow, but I guess it isn't,,,, right? Rain, hail, sleet or snow, must have be something else :-)

None of my GD CDs have what has been discussed here as "disc rot".
Most of them have never been played (or stored) in the car.
Just lucky? They have been in the dry high desert W. Colo. environment.
Hard to say. Maybe just bad pressings (are CDs pressings?) or production issues for the rotten ones?

Edit: Thanks Dennis, I'm good. Gonna pass I'm afraid. Your DFW area looks like they drivin' in the funny papers (to quote Hoke in Driving Miss Daisy) on that ice. Just one after another piling up. Got a CO buddy who is in Ft.W and he always remarks at the lack of bad weather driving skills down there. No practice I guess! And likely no snow tires either.

Edit 2: Oro is famous! He is cited in Community Bits in the Feb. GD Bulletin currently in my inbox. Way to go Oro! And they mention it is Dave L's anniv. of 1st day working for the GD. PIc of him in his bold ski outfit and some cool looking rockered skis with bolts on them. Seen lots of different GD skis but don't know who made that newer model. Anybody know? The pic with his cat is cool too. Big ole long hair. Of course it's a longhair! Dang hippies, get off my lawn!

Got mine today. Haven't listened to it yet, but I'm very pleased that it contains both shows. Wasn't expecting them to both be complete shows. Thank you Dave.

The 10/2 post-drums section is one of my favorites of all time. Especially Wheel>Truckin>Other One - the transitions are exceptional. Yes, The Other One is brief, but that whole trifecta with the transitions is picture perfect. I can't wait to listen to it.

I have not been lurking here at all in recent months. I hope everyone is in good health and enjoying 2023 so far. Stay warm this weekend!

Hi all, I hope the crew is doing well. I got my copy yesterday and after hard jiu jitsu training session, I came home and gave it a listen. I got through CDs 1 and 2 which is the 10/1 show. As expected very much a classic 77 show. I really love that we are getting more of the fall of 77 being released simply because those shows still have 1977 Grateful Dead feel and flow (obviously), but they do differ (at least to my ears) from April and May of that year. Right now I am listening to 10/2 and I have to say there is quite the exceptional Casey Jones opener... In any case, 1977 is the year that keeps on giving.

Random things:
I have recently discovered Jethro Tull beyond the one commonly played song Aqualung that circulates through the local radio stations. Needless to say I am jumping head first down that rabbit hole.

Oro got the shoutout in the monthly Grateful Dead bulletin in the Community Bits section. Very cool!

I believe that today is the anniversary of Dave L coming on board with the Grateful Dead. All I can say to that is what I always do: Thank You Dave for everything! And when you can , how about a 1985 release pretty please?

Being from PdxS and alive then (though only 2yrs) makes this release extra special.
Thanks Dave for the Portland Oregon consideration, also for Pick #44 in Eugene!

Picked up at the PO yesterday, previewed a few last night. Audio quality preliminary (*after auds) seems excellent. Busy with prep for the bitter cold weekend, will keep warm with this full listen soon. Nice to have more October to go with DaP Dekalb and RT 1.2 releases. Reminding folks Dicks 29 has hidden tracks from October 11 show on discs 2 & 5, including a grate Wharf Rat.

Is it just me, or is the sound quality not great for the first couple of songs on Disc 1 of Dave's 45? About halfway through TLEO it gets better, but not great to start. Could be my Bose disc player acting up.

PF - only 46 days until Spring - tonight, in my area, they are expecting -30 C/22 F, so I sure hope so.
I will NOT be out with my binoculars in my backyard tonight trying to see The Green Comet (Comet C/2022 E3 on its birth certificate), not seen since Neanderthals roamed the earth. It can wait a night or two.

My wife's been watching every night for a week.
Drags herself out of bed after the moon sets in bitter cold air.
She's over it now and not very impressed with Greenie.
At best it was a fuzzy blob, as comets are, but color was evasive.
That said she did not set up the little telescope, just 10x binos.
Amazed at her dedication. You go girl!

Tull - Thick As a Brick, easily my favorite, Living In The Past comes in second. For more modern releases Rock Island and Roots And Branches weren't too bad. Oh, and Crest of a Knave was good.

Kudos to your Mrs for her dedication. You’re right, though, most of the time - with the exception of Neowise - comet gazing is a dud. Neowise was a rock star.

Hey PF, I have a junior in high school, and he just wrote an essay for his English class titled something like "Why the SB 49 call was not as bad as you thought." He makes some great points, including that there was an 80% chance that play call would result in a touchdown. He goes into this "the analytics say" stuff and I'm just like, I don't give an EFF what the analytics say, you got Beast Mode, hand.off.the.ball. Kids and their analytics these days, pfttt

Jethro Tull - Benefit, Stand-up, Storm Watch, Living in the past.
Spinning 45 now, after the first two tunes, it evens out and becomes very pleasant. Mexicali with Jer shredding and the last Dire Wolf in the key of E. A Cassidy then Deal with Jerry again on top of it into a killer Passenger then back to Tennessee. Great first set here with a real pretty Peggy-O. Second set looks great too.
