We know where you've been and we're taking you back with the twice as nice DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 45: PARAMOUNT THEATRE, PORTLAND, OR - 10/1/77 & 10/2/77. Back-to-back complete previously unreleased shows on 4CDs? You betcha! Why? Because we couldn't pick one over the other of these two nights that have been described as "fire," "mind-frying," and "crispy" (bit of a theme here) too many times to count. Witness it for yourself when you dig into the inventive medleys and pristine sound, not to mention the first "Dupree's Diamond Blues" since '69 and the first live "Casey Jones" since '74.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson (with a boost from Bob Menke, more about that in David's video) and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Grab a copy while you can.

Brand X live…bet that was sweeett!

77 overkill: I know that’s my feeling. I mean I’ve enjoyed every great 77 show they have given us, (especially shhhwiiinnngg!) and I’m sure I’ll dig these 2 hot rods, but there’s so much awesome other stuff out there still and only so many releases left….
Hey, some folks are happy smoking the same brand of weed and beer day in and day out, some folks like to mix it up…
It’s all good, chever way your pleasure tends…
I think 25k is just the right number: they all still sell out eventually, but notice we haven’t heard anyone bummed that they missed out because it sold too quick.

PT, thanks for the intel! Lol, BITD I they were never around long enough to go bad!
I believe she said they were dried when she got them, so good news!
Think some “retired” folks might try a little bitty stem together and go play in the snow! Weeeeeeeee

Speaking of, shoveled yet another six inches (more up on top) over here on the western slope VGUY. We’re actually considered not in drought for the first time in…? course it’s still early so hopefully we’ll get more including the big dumps like we used to get in the spring 🤞

    Mikey, how’s it going eh!
My Goodness what dicks: “ok, your not dead so we can sack ya now” Fuck Off greed heads!
Talk about a string of luck! Kinda like the Leafs ; ) teasing of course!

And Dennis, sorry to hear old sport. Just like the pranksters say “nothing lasts” and I will add “especially if it’s something you like” yaassss those old golden handcuffs are hard to shake! Good luck going forward…forward, never straight!

At least for me, I think I am simply trying to gauge it's popularity and am surprised when everyone else's likes or dislikes don't line up with mine. Which is silly really. If this site should teach me anything it's that there's room for all.
And in birding news there's a Sharp Shinned Hawk outside my window looking for breakfast at my feeders. This girl is a proven predator. Doves beware!

    Sold Out or not

Can anyone explain why it matters whether the item sells out? With any limited release it will eventually do so. If you want it you buy it and it doesn’t matter if it sells out. If you don’t want then you don’t buy it and why would you care if it sells out.

I can think of two reasons why you might care:

    1. You haven’t got the money at the moment but will have shortly. In this case you don’t want it sell out quickly, but if your cash flow is that critical perhaps you shouldn’t be buying discs. You have known for several months when the release date was and could have saved enough to have it available when needed.

    2. You have bought the item and you hope to make a profit by reselling it. In this case you are gambling on a future outcome. You win some and you lose some, this might be seen as capitalism in action.

25000 appears to allow enough leeway to allow everyone to get a copy if they want it. Presumably if they don’t sell so many the PTB will reduce the number they produce.

I’ll keep subscribing as long as they are issued, unless I run out of spare cash or stop breathing.

    fresh or dried?

Dried shrooms will last quite a while. I still have some from the nineties that still look ok. Fresh, if not consumed or dried quickly, they will spoil and put off a rather pungent odor like rotting flesh. Even in the refrigerator, they will only last about a week to 10 days, then they will rot.
Peter Gabriel, what can you say about this man, his concerts are unbelievable, such a production. Incredible.
Saw him twice in the 90's, once in 93 inside in an auditorium and the second time was at Woodstock 94.
The inside show at the orena in Orlando was as close to perfect as it can get. The show opens with a moody little instrumental piece and then it turns into Come talk to me, with Peter rising up from under the stage in a phone booth, he's singing and starts to pull on the phone cord, it pulls and he pulls and tugs and drags the phone line out of the booth down this long ramp that juts out into the audience, he pulls and tugs and yanks that phone cord till he's at the very end of the ramp, which is right in front of where we were sitting, he is now almost in our faces and the phone cord starts to pull back, as the song is finishing, the cord drags him all the way back, slowly, into the booth. And that was the first song. There were so many props that came up, a giant tree with many limbs rises out of the stage, and Peter and Paula cling to its branches while singing Shaking the Tree. During Steam Peter walks right down that ramp and once again he is in our faces, almost right in front of us. At the end, a briefcase is brought out from behind the stage, as the show is ending each band member walks to the briefcase, opens it and jumps in, disappearing into the briefcase. The absolute pinnacle of the show was Secret World, as the song played, a giant screen above the band began to rotate, spinning slowly at first, gathering steam and spinning fast. Then stopping as the song ends. Of all the shows that I have been to, this is definitely a top 5 show, if not top 3.
Peter will be on tour in Europe and England this spring, Daverock, if you get a chance, I highly recommend catching one of his shows it will blow your mind. There is a US tour in the works for after the European tour, I will be at one of these concerts if they are not too far away from me. It's been 20 years since he toured with a band outside of WOMAD.
Not a fan of Genesis, I have 3 sides live and it's not bad, just not what I listen to, so much to listen to, so little time, stereo going 16 hrs. a day pretty much now.
    Last bunch of listens:
    Mahogany Rush - Strange Universe
Jimi Hendrix - The Cry of Love
Robin Trower - For Earth Below
Randy California and Spirit - Future Games
Traffic - When the Eagle Flies
    Spooky Tooth - Spooky Two
    REO Speedwagon - REO T.W.O.
Peter Gabriel - Alive and Bumpin'
    Peter Gabriel - OVO
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - 1997 Fillmore concerts live
    Santana - Caravanservi
    Santana - Borboletta
Jerry Garcia and Sanjay Mishra - Blue Incantation On Jan. 5th Jerry Garcia Music and Arts Label will release Front Street Outtakes which has Jerry and Sanjay outtakes from Blue Incantation
David Crosby - If I could only remember my name - It's all coming back to me now
Crosby Stills Nash and Young - 4 way street

Dennis - Sorry to hear your business is closing. I got “downsized” after 32 years at my job a few years back (the VERY day I returned after being off 8 months recovering from cancer and all that involves - real pricks) and finding comparable income at a certain age is impossible. I hope it works out good for you, Dennis. I’ve been the same lately with buying music, I’ve bought only two things this year, the new Dylan (arrived yesterday), and DaP 45.
On that note, some have wondered why DaP 45 has not sold out. All good reasons listed, but may I also add the international shipping rate is likely a factor. Not a complaint, it is what it is, that is the cost of things, but a charge of $16.99 shipping for a la carte items is just beyond what some folks may pay. I did not subscribe this year, it just outpriced me, I’ll just bite the shipping bullet on select items, but it is what it is.
Love the Genesis chat, and it seems everyone is a Gabriel fan. When we saw him, I’m thinking early 80s, me and my buddy were sitting right beside an entrance to the seating area in the arena he played at. My friend is loading up his pipe with some hash, just as the house lights go out. Being Gabriel, he and the band couldn’t just show up on stage from the wings, no, it had to be theatrical. A very bright light appears from the entrance beside us, a hand held light, very bright, and at different entrances around the arena. My friend thought it was some cops thing and freaked, and dropped/threw his pipe and all this great Lebanese hash! It was a member of the band making their entrance to the show, where they would walk to the stage holding this incredibly bright light skyward! (Gabriel is a genius theatrical performer). I laughed so phucing hard at my friend, he was so pissed!! (He did something similar at a football game we were at one time, too!) Genesis has a great catalogue of music, with Broadway and Seconds Out highly recommended.

I have ordered that Genesis, Mike.

Most comments seem to echo my feelings. Saw Pete during the "Plays Live" tour and the Bicycle tour. The man puts on a hell of show.

Always thought Pete was the brains behind Genesis, never thought they were as good after he left.

Got Bob Dylan's Bootleg 17 in cds tonight. The LP's are lined up for tomorrow.

Just for the record Mike, my buying MAY (?) slow down. The store I work in is closing the location I work at. I will be looking for something new, but first my wife says I need to do some work around the house. Current job will be hard to match. Not too many jobs you can do the amount of substances we do and still have a job :-).

As for NOT.. I'm not saying the flooded the market with the 25k limited edition, but this in combination with the box set model of sandwiches of great shows surrounded by ok shows and take years to sell out. Well, they have released a mountain of material and it doesn't seem nearly as limited as the paychecks that keep it afloat. As much as I like '77, they seem to overly rely on it this time of the year. So here we are.

Keep in mind the stuff they do release is mostly mind-blowing stuff, I don't feel taken or anything. There might just be some saturation competing with shrinking paychecks.

Smithers, release the hounds (sorry, just love saying that)

Only Dave's picks I've seen last a week, which is a bit of a shock to be honest. I've gotten them all from 30 on and this is probably my most anticipated show to be released. No doubt there have been some good ones since then but I thought this one would be gone quickly

Marx Brothers classic.
Groucho - I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member.

RT Vol. 1 No. 1, 1979 - Interesting sound on this. Very dynamic and heavy on the midrange? Vocals not so much. Brent's electric piano (synth?) so bright and loud it hurts. Phil sounds good though.

Glad to hear that folks are getting their Dave's Picks 45 in the mail. I got a shipping notification 5 days ago, but if I click on the tracking number USPS still says they are waiting for the package. This has happened before and I've come home and found the package waiting for me, so who knows.

Thanks to all who've weighed in on why this Pick isn't sold out. Anecdotally I've often found that people wax lyrical about Spring '77 but don't seem to have the same affinity for Fall, so maybe that's a factor. IDK. I just know that I was enjoying the heck out of Dave's Vol 25 yesterday. Pulling out 23 today just to listen to it while it's still January...

When you get your copy, pay attention to the time when the audience tape fades into the soundboard on track 2. :)

Istshow - great quote by Groucho Marx. Filched by The Cramps for the opening line of their classic " No Club Lone Wolf".

Paste that tracking number into the UPS system.
Mine tracked all the way with UPS until it was handed off to USPS.
At that point the USPS system tracked it until it was put in my mailbox today.

Started with 10-2 set 2 since I had a pretty good cassette copy of that show and know it well.

Sounds grate!
And waaaaaay better than the opera.

UPS tells me "A delivery date will be provided as soon as possible", the same message since 1/25/23. USPS just says Status not available. If I hadn't had three prior bouts with Dave's Picks being lost in transit and taking months to get resolved, I'd be less anxious about it. Not too encouraged seeing the shipping address is missing my apartment number, which my billing info definitely has as it's listed twice on the order status page at deadnet. Oh well, plenty of Dead to listen to...

Last five as best as I can recall:
GOGD 5/17/77 and 5/15/77
Jazz is Dead 4/14/99
Peter Gabriel Secret World Live I suppose watching a concert film counts
And GOGD DaP 45 Listening Party followed by my own Listening Party to 9/9/72 The Other One, which was a relisten as I listened to it when it was announced, curious at a 34 min Other One a week after the 9/3/72 Folsom one that is filler on DiP 36 9/21/72. It more than delivered, but this time I let the Stella Blue play, and I normally don't care much for '72 Stellas, as they just haven't yet found it, and it's almost exactly perfect in '73; but this one was fantastic. Phil is all over it. Far better than the one 2 weeks before on DaP 24 8/25/72 where Jerry is still searching for the vocal and the guitar voicing (another 30+ Other One on that one, too), but I also believe Jerry was completely wasted at that point. But anyway, I know some like to go in with virgin listens to the Normanized, I just get excited and want to hear some of the highlights of what I will hear in better quality. I also listened to Bird Song and Playing on this venture on 9/9. Saving the rest for May, I suppose.

Hope to hear more good things about DaP 45. I liked the Listening Party, except Jack Straw. Way too fast a tempo. Doesn't need to be funereal slow like Dead & Co, but I like a good loping pace to Jack Straw that builds to a fiery peak, not the double time, frenzied pace of this one. DaP 25 11/6/77 shows how by the end of the tour, they learned how to burn the place down with Jack Straw and keep it about the same tempo, just throw in more and more of the power chords.

This just popped up. Dave's 23 on 5 LPs.
I always buy the vinyl but I just listened to this and it is good but...
I better decide fast only 5000 copies.
That's what I thought about Light Into Ashes.
And I think it is still available. (Yes, and it was a 7200 copy release)
Could justify Dave's 1 on vinyl because I don't have the CD.
I'm waffling. Where is Dennis' wife's credit card?
Cheers

So I guess the Dave's Vinyl model isn't doing them all in numerical order starting with No.1. More of a pick and choose by them.

Garcia Family Provisions album of the month.
Garcia Live No. 5, NYE 1975 at The Keystone for 20% off.
Don't have that one yet and it's got Nicky Hopkins.
Tough choice, $124.95 or $13.59. Hmmm.
$13.59 it is! Where is my wife's credit card?
Cheers

Well that was unexpected. Seems a bit of an odd choice for a release to me on the back of Daves 45, featuring shows played only two months before it. I played the cds last month and while I do think it's a great show - both sets - I can't remember thinking there was anything wrong with the sound quality that could be improved by listening to it on vinyl.
I guess buying it would be insurance if the cds become unplayable in a few years, as some of them seem to have become..but otherwise, I'm not so sure.

None of my GD CDs have what has been discussed here as "disc rot".
Most of them have never been played (or stored) in the car.
Just lucky? They have been in the dry high desert W. Colo. environment.
Hard to say. Maybe just bad pressings (are CDs pressings?) or production issues for the rotten ones?
Cheers

Edit: Thanks Dennis, I'm good. Gonna pass I'm afraid. Your DFW area looks like they drivin' in the funny papers (to quote Hoke in Driving Miss Daisy) on that ice. Just one after another piling up. Got a CO buddy who is in Ft.W and he always remarks at the lack of bad weather driving skills down there. No practice I guess! And likely no snow tires either.

Edit 2: Oro is famous! He is cited in Community Bits in the Feb. GD Bulletin currently in my inbox. Way to go Oro! And they mention it is Dave L's anniv. of 1st day working for the GD. PIc of him in his bold ski outfit and some cool looking rockered skis with bolts on them. Seen lots of different GD skis but don't know who made that newer model. Anybody know? The pic with his cat is cool too. Big ole long hair. Of course it's a longhair! Dang hippies, get off my lawn!

Got mine today. Haven't listened to it yet, but I'm very pleased that it contains both shows. Wasn't expecting them to both be complete shows. Thank you Dave.

The 10/2 post-drums section is one of my favorites of all time. Especially Wheel>Truckin>Other One - the transitions are exceptional. Yes, The Other One is brief, but that whole trifecta with the transitions is picture perfect. I can't wait to listen to it.

I have not been lurking here at all in recent months. I hope everyone is in good health and enjoying 2023 so far. Stay warm this weekend!

Hi all, I hope the crew is doing well. I got my copy yesterday and after hard jiu jitsu training session, I came home and gave it a listen. I got through CDs 1 and 2 which is the 10/1 show. As expected very much a classic 77 show. I really love that we are getting more of the fall of 77 being released simply because those shows still have 1977 Grateful Dead feel and flow (obviously), but they do differ (at least to my ears) from April and May of that year. Right now I am listening to 10/2 and I have to say there is quite the exceptional Casey Jones opener... In any case, 1977 is the year that keeps on giving.

Random things:
I have recently discovered Jethro Tull beyond the one commonly played song Aqualung that circulates through the local radio stations. Needless to say I am jumping head first down that rabbit hole.

Oro got the shoutout in the monthly Grateful Dead bulletin in the Community Bits section. Very cool!

I believe that today is the anniversary of Dave L coming on board with the Grateful Dead. All I can say to that is what I always do: Thank You Dave for everything! And when you can , how about a 1985 release pretty please?

Picked up at the PO yesterday, previewed a few last night. Audio quality preliminary (*after auds) seems excellent. Busy with prep for the bitter cold weekend, will keep warm with this full listen soon. Nice to have more October to go with DaP Dekalb and RT 1.2 releases. Howdy!

Depending on how rocked out you like your music, my recommendations are Thick as A Brick and Passion Play. Enjoy

PF - only 46 days until Spring - tonight, in my area, they are expecting -30 C/22 F, so I sure hope so.
I will NOT be out with my binoculars in my backyard tonight trying to see The Green Comet (Comet C/2022 E3 on its birth certificate), not seen since Neanderthals roamed the earth. It can wait a night or two.

My wife's been watching every night for a week.
Drags herself out of bed after the moon sets in bitter cold air.
She's over it now and not very impressed with Greenie.
At best it was a fuzzy blob, as comets are, but color was evasive.
That said she did not set up the little telescope, just 10x binos.
Amazed at her dedication. You go girl!
Cheers

Tull - Thick As a Brick, easily my favorite, Living In The Past comes in second. For more modern releases Rock Island and Roots And Branches weren't too bad. Oh, and Crest of a Knave was good.

Kudos to your Mrs for her dedication. You’re right, though, most of the time - with the exception of Neowise - comet gazing is a dud. Neowise was a rock star.

Just delivered. Will comment later. I listened to Dap 21 last night. Those east coast shows are hot.

Have yet to listen to 45, but it did arrive yesterday. Everyone seems pretty pumped so far....

Hey PF, I have a junior in high school, and he just wrote an essay for his English class titled something like "Why the SB 49 call was not as bad as you thought." He makes some great points, including that there was an 80% chance that play call would result in a touchdown. He goes into this "the analytics say" stuff and I'm just like, I don't give an EFF what the analytics say, you got Beast Mode, hand.off.the.ball. Kids and their analytics these days, pfttt

Jethro Tull - Benefit, Stand-up, Storm Watch, Living in the past.
Spinning 45 now, after the first two tunes, it evens out and becomes very pleasant. Mexicali with Jer shredding and the last Dire Wolf in the key of E. A Cassidy then Deal with Jerry again on top of it into a killer Passenger then back to Tennessee. Great first set here with a real pretty Peggy-O. Second set looks great too.
