Wow! Just as when you think eyes is gonna go to drums out of the bliss comes dancing! One of my all time fave moments! Not just classic 77 but classic ever dead! - @emrysdavies1215 on 10/1/77, YouTube

...this show was off the hook from the very get go. The Casey Jones is the best I've heard... beginning a jam that goes through each member going off on an instrumental solo. The end has them jamming so hard you can no longer hear them singing through it. Now you know you're in trouble (The Good Kind) when a show starts like that... Weirtheir on 10/2/77, Dead.net

Holy hell, the 10/2/77 Betty Board sounds incredible... I just wanted to pay homage to this unreleased gem, which features the lovely, tight playing you'd expect of a 77 show with some of the highest audio quality I've ever heard ... What a treat. u/monsteroftheweek13 on 10/2/77, Reddit

We know where you've been and we're taking you back with the twice as nice DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 45: PARAMOUNT THEATRE, PORTLAND, OR - 10/1/77 & 10/2/77. Back-to-back complete previously unreleased shows on 4CDs? You betcha! Why? Because we couldn't pick one over the other of these two nights that have been described as "fire," "mind-frying," and "crispy" (bit of a theme here) too many times to count. Witness it for yourself when you dig into the inventive medleys and pristine sound, not to mention the first "Dupree's Diamond Blues" since '69 and the first live "Casey Jones" since '74.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson (with a boost from Bob Menke, more about that in David's video) and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Grab a copy while you can.

*2 per order. Very limited quantity available.

Jack - That’s hilarious! One can never go wrong with a little Europe ‘72 coming from the speakers!
Agree on the Sabres - their goaltending was their Achilles Heel in the end. If they tighten up their defence in the off season, they are a definite team going places.

Oro - My best friend growing up became a heavy duty mechanic, and he always believed in the KISS rule on vehicles - When it comes to accessories and thingamabobs, Keep It Simple Stupid, and party every night!!

Go Leafs Go! My youngest told me today he tried to get playoff tickets, he said the resale on resale made Taylor Swift’s nightmare with TicketBastard look like child’s play. Ticket sellers are organized crime, IMHO. All of us grew up with $6, $10, $12 concert tickets, and now, all this!!!

Had to purchase a car unexpectedly last year.
Not fun. Supply and demand bs being exploited by the man: no haggling, give us a down payment sight unseen and no test drive. I ask the guy “ what if we give you this big, nonrefundable deposit, wait a month for delivery, then test drive it and think it’s not right”? But I digress. So, since you either had to wait forever, or just take what little was available, we went with one that had more upgrades then we would have normally paid for, but it did have an upgraded JBL system, which is nice, but not sure it’s worth what it cost…ce la vie.
But yeah Mike, it was all about the phuching screen and more crap to break that you don’t need.
But hey, I don’t get to drive it, I just paid for it lol. The other one does love now having serious XM, though she’s become addicted to yacht rock lol. I really like the jazz station, and on the rare occasion I do get to drive it, it’s nice to have the GD channel!

My last in person car purchase - I brought a copy of 5/26/72 on CD. The salesman shows me car. I open and close the door. Sounds solid enough.

Let’s hear the sound system. I put in a CD and listen for a minute or so. I get back out.

    Ready for a test drive?

    Nope. I’ll take it.

The Sabres are running out of time. Too little, too late.

Beware of the Oilers and Avs. Both are hot right now.

    Hey Nitecat and OB,

The 91 shows were actually 48 track recordings. I remember Dave talked about this when the box was released. And yes, the 89 shows were 24. 87 was definitely not a multi track.

Hey aren't we supposed to get a new Dave's Picks this month?

Just heard from Rhino, #45 actually sold out in January, they just forgot to update the site.

Companies can make shipping errors - that is expected. I worked for a major vehicle manufacturer in my career, and the wisdom was that customers should know problems may happen - a car has 10,000 individual parts, so if .5% of them malfunction, that is 50 parts - usually it is one part, well within an acceptable margin of error. So if a company makes good on their shipping error, costs absorbed, and apologies all round, it should be good. But to do it twice, after carefully explaining to them what the problem was in the first place - that’s on them, wholly. Not someone you want to do business with. Warning Will Robinson!

Speaking of vehicles, we just purchased a new one. Instead of the salesperson running through features of the brakes or the steering etc, it’s all about the computer screen vehicles have now. I thought I was getting a Google lesson. You are buying a laptop with wheels now. Didn’t even cover the sound system, such as it is. The last car we bought for the wife about 4 years ago, I must have been thinking out loud and said “Oh! No CD player”. The salesman gives me this look like I was a Luddite, and I swear I was going to smack him if he said “Ok Boomer”, but he just mumbled about the “new technology”.

Well the replacement copy of GL14 came last night.

    Failed.

As I worried, it was another Reflections album wrapped in a GarciaLive cardboard shipping sleeve!

I gonna try for another replacement,,,, maybe. Might just send back and order one from garcia com (and hope it's the right one). I think warner/rhino has labeled the wrong album,,, might get the same results from jerry's site.

    Anyone else buy this?

UPDATE - I guess amazon is out of stock OR they've pulled copies because I'm not the only one to complain,,, but I could only return this second copy. I've ordered a copy from the garcia site. Cost a few bucks more than amazon, but I did get a free copy of Reflections! So at this point a few bucks up I guess,,,,,, as long as the copy from jerry is the right album!

    Now we just wait :-)

Extra fun in Auro 3D immersive!
I believe they had something like 48, 64, or 96 channels or some crazy number since it was produced with I believe ABC for some late night In Concert show or something? So typical GD got the network to pull, all the stops lol.

EDIT: I’m referencing the 91 shows, or at least the Blu-ray, the 89 shows are multitrack 24? as all shows from summer 89 through spring 90 I believe we’re recorded multitrack for the live album that became With Out A Net.
Still boggles my mind they haven’t released more of them! Hashtag RELEASE THE MULTIs lol

Love the Day of the Dead box, every disc is great. Was recently thinking about the box and Bonnie "Prince" Billy because along with Reuben and Cherise, BPB covers If I Had The World To Give, which was at the heart of 11/20/78, a Pick of the Day a couple of weeks ago. He also sang it live in the studio of the CBS Morning Show, the video is easily found, and it is absolutely and completely beautiful. And yesterday evening, before VGuy posted, I had sought out another Bonnie "Prince" Billy video - No Time to Cry - which is from the vinyl of Best Troubador (a Merle Haggard tribute album I think.) Learned that No Time to Cry was written by Iris Demint. Another truly beautiful song. Saw Jerry and John Kahn play Reuben and Cherise at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago July 1982. Here's to a good week ahead.

I think that is the same Haight Ashbury documentary made in March 1967. There is a moment in there where a gentleman is speaking and he is so prescient. He is discussing the massive changes to the world coming as computers (think AI) and robots will eventually do all work for mankind. Interesting (recent: think last 5 years) the calls for a universal income and how do we live without work. He discusses universal income back in March 1967. Just WOW. Not sure it is the same documentary but think it is. I think I watched on Amazon a few years back.

Cheers!!! More Beer, Less Work.

You sort of almost comment on it but from my myopic thinking, I always looked at changes in their styles over the years was always based on one factor. That factor being: We have to entertain ourselves first, then the crowd will follow. Of course, it always did.

Just finished my 5th listen thru the MSG box. Great Box. Also ran thru some tube videos.

Voodoo Nola!!! If you see this thanks so much for your incredible work!!! Check out his 8-9-89 of the Greek and 9-12-85 from Kaiser/AO. Was at the Greek show but the 1985 show, I finally got to see the 20th Anniversary Screen behind them in full bloom. Wow good stuff. I had seen pictures of the screen but never it coming to life, animated. Just love it, and the boards are crispy.

40 years ago today I was up at the Warfield Theatre for another fun night with the Good old Grateful . The Dead could have played at the 20,000 seat Oakland Coliseum and sold it out, but they played the 2,000 seat Warfield Theatre for a much cooler experience. Fun times!

All of the discussions a few weeks ago, got me into listening to a lot of their material again. Man, that band was really good. For those of you who are interested, use your Google machine to look up Traffic Live 1973. There’s a half a dozen or so, high quality videos. Great stuff.

Gary -those were great visions of the future that you mentioned people had in the 1960's. The idea that robots would replace humans in the work place, and increased, improved technology would mean we wouldn't have to work so much. They went on to assume that when this happened, we would all be living in some kind of Utopia. Walking round my home town yesterday - it's very evident that people are working much less than they were 50 years ago partly as a result of improved technology. It's also very evident that the 1960's vision as to what would happen socially as a result of this hasn't come to pass.
Just this week a friends neighbour died following a botched attempt to burgle her home. Yesterday we saw a security guard smash a woman to the ground after he had apparently caught her leaving one of the poorest shops in town with something she hadn't paid for. Welcome to Utopia !

4/7/72 - the last Dead RSD album released on vinyl was delivered this morning. Steaming in with "Greatest Story.." - a real ray of sunshine. Sparks are really flying on side 2's "China Cat-Rider".

Good points Dave. For YEARS now I've been asking (and never hear being asked), what are we gonna do with all the people? There are more people than jobs, period. Certainly on a worldwide level, I think we're close to that in America, maybe still have a couple more jobs than people here, but MOST places?!

Andrew Yang pointed this out during the last election cycle when he said your job ain't gonna to China, it's going to a robot!

So what do we do with everyone? Seems like people in general aren't down with someone getting "stuff" for nothing. I always hear at "gatherings" from people in my neighborhood about how the poor should work harded, about how "I" worked hard for what "I" got and they should too.

They NEVER want to believe it was luck and if they got "good shit", they deserve it. NEVER have they gotten a job because they knew someone or knew someone who knew someone. My old man worked 3 jobs his whole life, so don't tell me about hard work. NO one worked harded. Most of what we have in life is pure luck, think what you may.

So what do we do with "the people"? Maybe you have the balls to say "let's kill 70% of the world's population, it's an answer. Not a good one. (everyone will believe they are in the 30%) Maybe we do away with all robotic type machine and EVERYONE has a job. Maybe that job will only entail 10 hours a week of work (so everyone has a job)

But it seems like it will take a complete change in the base human personality. You would think this would be easy since EVERYWHERE we seem to have a "higher god" that tells us to love everyone. Certainly in the Christian world, we love what Jesus says, but fuck doing it.

For me it don't matter much, I'm old and it will be good until I die. I only have one kid and he will get all that my wife has earned when she croaks, so he will probably be ok for his lifetime. I look at people in our neighborhood group, they LOVE their grandchildren, they're GREAT christians, but don't want to hear about climate change and how fossil fuels are not forever. Where and how to they think these grandchildrens will live? Hint - they'll be in the 30% because they earned the right!

Sorry for the rant, maybe I earned one :-)

Just finished his bio, written by him and read by him.

I like Bruce and the band, but Bruce the man, maybe not as much.

I listened to a 20/30 minute interview with Jerry and then did Bruce. Talk about 2 different people,,,, wow!

Bruce talks about HIS band being the baddest, greatest band that ever existed. AND it was HIS BAND.

Jerry said, when pressed, about how the future remembers him, he said he like to be remembered as a competent musician.

Bruce, a band you'd go see.

Jerry, a man you'd like to meet.

Opinions.

When asked how he wanted to be remembered, Garcia said "As a guy who had allot of fun".

I’ve been doing the same gig for 16 years.
In that time technology has increased the work, not lessened it!
Partly because half this crap doesn’t work.
These companies are run by greedy idiots who are in such a rush to get it to market, that they’ll knowingly release unfinished/imperfect product that the consumer can then waste their time on firmware updates and service calls until the product maybe functions as intended, but usually only intermittently/inconsistently.

In the past, we installed say one black medal box that worked the first time you plugged it it.
You might have to set a few things in a simple menu, but it was easy, intuitive and most of all, it came with what you needed and it worked!
Now, it takes more crap, power supplies, gadgets, widgets, dongles, converters and a seemingly never ending list of things you probably weren’t given with the product, or even knew you needed.
So after taking longer just to install, while loosing your sanity in the process, now you have to go through another ridiculous list of tasks, known or otherwise, to get the unit to function properly. Most of it requiring internet, which is itself then another possible rabbit hole of nonsense and fuckstration.
Meanwhile, your boss is now probably some kid who doesn’t know their ass from their elbow and doesn’t care but can’t understand why the job is taking so long?

So, when/how will technology make my life easier? I’m waiting…
In fact what’s this about we won’t have to work at all…yeah right.

And since we’re on a warm fuzzy roll. Overpopulation and wealth inequality are the 2 biggest problems we have that effect ALL other social issues. Every sperm is not holy, we are going to die from making our home uninhabitable.
Throwing Stones indeed..the futures here, we are it, we are on our own!

Sorry, I should have coffee first lol.

Dennis - You seem a tad pissed off today. Perhaps ordering the Miles Davis “The Electric Years” very limited Vinyl set will make you feel better. If ever I was going to break down for vinyl, this set would be the reason I would do it. But with a kid getting married, and a new car, and planning to move homes…too much, unfortunately. But it is a beauty collection, Wow! His best period IMHO.

As for Springsteen, I personally never “got” him (I can include Pink Floyd in that, too). I had friends that thought he was alright, but someone once said to me “You can never get Dylan to speak at a show, and you can never get Springsteen to shut up”. I think the boy suffers from a touch of hubris.
Anyway, feel better Dennis. We are on THIS side of the ground! ;)

A shoutout to my hombre Oro!

PS - Go Leafs Go! And now that baseball is back, Go Blue Jays Go!

The radical, he rant and rage.
Someone's got to turn the page.
We've known we had to do something since we were teens.
Everyone here is still fighting the good fight.
Let's keep on keepin' on.

As for tech, I miss being able to understand and work on my own car. Yeah, my VW bug was a polluter but It was said you could drive one for a penny a mile. Well at least when gas was fifty cents. And don't get me started on how much I don't know about my own computer. I'm a fossil!

Sad news: Little Big Man Otto, see avatar, didn't make it. Multiple cancers and only three years old. A trouper all the way. He had it good for those four months we had him. Maybe the Bobby Sands He's Gone today. Isn't that on a Dick's Picks?

Yes, Len Bias was drafted as the #2 player in the ('84-'85?) NBA draft. The party to celebrate included LOTS of Cocaine (well, it WAS the '80's). Len Bias died of cocaine intoxication. Which sucks for a million reasons, not least because I would have love to see him play with (an older) Larry Bird. Lefty Driesell the Univ. of Maryland coach apparently did some stuff to try to hide certain facts from the press. He was not coaching at Maryland for much longer after that.

I loved Bruce Springsteen from 1977-1985 or so. Great concerts and I always LOVED his long stories. I've seen him twice since '85, it's just not the same for me.
Saw Dylan in '78, '87!!, early '90's (Joni Mitchell opened) and 2012. It always great because it DYLAN!! I probably had the most fun at the 2012 show.
Another band that NEVER talked from the stage was The Cars. Saw them 9 times, second time was Philly. The ENTIRETY of stage banter at that show consisted of "good cream cheese".

Last 5:
Paul Winter-Canyon
Will Ackerman-Imaginary Roads
Deodato-In Concert
Miles Davis-Panthalassa (Bill Laswell re-mixes)
Neil Young-Road Rock

Go Maple Leafs-I'm all in!!

Thanks Mr. Ones, for noting Will Ackerman. Years ago there was a very special concert not too far from home to celebrate Froggy Bottom Guitars, crafted not far away either. Will lives here in Vermont, played that night and we had a chance to hang out with him. During a rambling conversation, he revealed he had severe insomnia and seldom slept much. Which of course made his extraordinary talent all the more amazing. Now time to go find whatever I have of his music.

1st, sorry for the loss of Otto. My condolences. Pets are part of the family as much as children.

I’m counting on your Leafs this year more than ever. Or should I say OUR beloved Leafs since my Red Wings suck again. But let’s take this slowly. Their primary job should be to take out the damn Bruins. If they can’t win the Cup, at least do that. Before that even, how about we start with winning a playoff series? It’s been almost 20 years. You’re worse than the Sabres. I mean what the hell is going on down at that end of Lake Ontario? Yeah, I know Buffalo is on lake Erie, but it’s close.

Sorry Oro about banging on the Sabres. I did, however, catch your RJ cookie jar reference last week. Well done. By the way, if you’re missing DP13, it’s on Amazon right now for less than 20 bucks. You might want to grab that. He’s Gone was played in tribute to Bobby Sands, not Len Bias. I posted about it a few years back, but was rebuked for my pro-Irish stance.

So, even before the playoffs start, my teams are the same as last year. The Leafs in the east and the Oilers in the west. And of course the Kraken should they hold on. I will say, that I think a lot of people are overlooking the Avs. They are getting hot at the right time and Makar is a baller. Good luck to everyone outside of Boston.

....didn't check in here all day, because it's end of the month. And gets tense at my work during those. I don't think robots will be able to do what I do anytime soon. They would need to be able to handle stress. Interesting how robotics would be able to handle it. Would they follow my lead and smoke weed after work? Or download dopamine programs?
Got a hard back copy of Fahrenheit 451 today. I've never read it. Fixing that.
More beer? Enjoying a beer from Abita called PB&Jams. And yes. It tastes like PB&J. 7.5/10 Can robots brew new beers?
Sorry about Otto. Cancer sucks in any form regarding any person/animal/best pal.
MLB did start today. Marlins lost. They didn't do much in the off-season, so I'm not that hopeful. Besides, the Golden Showers are still hanging tough (my Avs jerking cousin calls them that. I love it) and the Dolphins are making some smart decisions. Not too worried about the Bruins. President Cup winners usually don't fare too well in the post season.
But, like someone earlier today said, March 30th wasn't all bad. A certain former president got indicted. Rumors swirling 34+ counts of business fraud. Couldnt have happened to a nicer guy. First of several dominoes to fall? Better be sure these charges are air tight. No loopholes. Wonder how that man in the grocery store last year that confronted me is feeling. Probably sad. And pissed. And probably somehow personally offended. Enjoy it my dude. My Make America Grateful Again tee just got promoted to top tier bitch.
No one is above the law.

Going on from yesterday, while it seems true that less people are working these days, those that are still doing so seem to be working longer hours under more stressful conditions.
Last 5 coming up -

Georgia Peaches -Live 10/73 - Iggy and The Stooges
Off The Bone - The Cramps
BBC Sessions - The Pretty Things
Trouble In Mind - Son House
Live 69 ( 5/29/69 Wisconsin) - Albert King

That Albert King has some coruscating solos on it. Makes you want to get out your own guitar and have a go. And if you haven't got a guitar, maybe go out and get one. Preferably one shaped like a harpoon. Many tried to get Albert's tone, but failed, citing the fact that he played upside down, was left handed and used an unusual tuning to explain why. That pipe must have had something to do with it too.

Istshow and Gary - sorry to read of your losses.

1st show, GFar.. my heart sinks.. best of luck through these troubled times.

Thanks for the shoutout regarding Terrapins. If nothing else we can at least agree they have a pretty cool mascot. Yes, twas Len Bias. His greatest contribution might not have been his basketball talent, he helped teach the world that cocaine is actually dangerous shit, be careful...

Dennis.. you have grace dignity and style, you are in class all your own. (and I found myself nodding several times during that rant)

I hate to admit this.. but I have been in a bit too busy to open, read the liner notes and listen to Dave's 45. I might have to fix this tonight and take some time to relax and completmplate. This is the longest I have ever waited to listen to a new release.

Keep on keeping on folks.. you are bright spot in a world that needs hope, unity and promise.

Rockin' The Rhein bonus disc 3-72

MLB opening day: What is this new rule about no "shift"? I mean defense is part of the strategy. I was a decent pull hitter (softball, .750 ave. zero HRs) and always aimed where they weren't standing, duh. The time clock is good though, much needed.
Thanks to all, That Mike, AJS, Vguy, DR, Jim, Oro, Gary, et.al. for the mentions.
It helps for sure.
Even though I haven't watched a single game this season gotta go with the Avs simply on my local team basis. That and I have a childhood friend from STL, who I chide, who is a Blues fan. (he actually coached an Olympic sled-hockey team)
Cheers to all and let's get out there and have a good weekend. Fresh stash and 3 cases of beer in stock. Beyond Meat brats and burgers for the bar-b if it doesn't snow! Everyone's invited.

The War on Drugs podcast is excellent if you have some listening time, which I know is in short supply around here. I mention it because there is an episode all about Len Bias, and how that single even helped to super accelerate the bogus WoD we all had to suffer through. The hosts are really funny, you'll wanna shake my hand after listening.

If our Leafs (I include Jack, Oro, & Mr Ones) can get by the Carolinas and the Bostons in the east, it is on to the Land of the Giants - LA, the AVs, the Knights. I don’t ask Santa for much…

PS - IMHO the new Dead camping gear just shouts “We have weed!!” to other campers. Stick to music. Let’s get some box set news.

Is this a tie-in to an upcoming Box announcement?
Such as HendrixFreak lying on his sleeping bag at Watkins Glen?

Or just another cheezy money grab?

LOL! I've been lucky having a 6" stealie on my bumper but I drive slow. Just having a Colo. license plate puts us under suspicion in all the states that aren't legal yet, like Utah. But if the merch helps keep them in business then so much the better. I liked the fire starter steel. But it's not like I don't have a lighter at all times.
Yes! BOX announcement. Or go crazy and tell us what DaP 47 will be Dave.
Cheers

It's a cheesy money grab!
$75 for a "Cosmic" poster. $35 for a "Cosmic" water bottle. $32 for a "Cosmic" fire starter!!

Who comes up with these ideas anyway? Can it get more ridiculous?

Many requests one here for shows and boxes from all eras - but I have never seen one asking for camping gear. I had a poke around on the merchandise stall just now-somewhere I never think to go, and I have just noticed all that stuff to go with Bears Choice when it comes out again. Weird that they think people would rather have all that than a box of the shows.

Hey rockers!!!

This just in: this year's box set to be pacific Northwest early 1968, copies of many complete shows were in the banana boxes...........

APRIL FOOLS!!!!!!

We saw 2 April Fools Day shows. One in 85--was a joke and we should've been refunded our money. 1986 was a bit better..........

The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year........

Rock on!

Doc, off to morgue
I shine in tears like the sun in April..........

Hello everyone!

What do you do when you see a bear while cosmic camping? You play Bear's Choice!

This year is about celebrating 50 years since Pigpen passing away.

My box guess is Fillmore East '69 '70 '71 re-masterd Plangent transfers 30 Disc Box.

that isn't working where I work, we all got cut to 15 hrs a week, but there are several folks who don't work, so it's still the few that do all the work. What's the answer? Quality will go down the few will not and can not make up for the others that just come in to get a check. There seems to be no pride in one's work anymore. I'm semi-retired so it doesn't matter to me anymore, it used to, but now I just shake my head, and say I'm glad I'm on my way out of here.
The cosmic camping traveling take advantage tour has started, and what a doozie it is. Have you ever seen such cheesy crap in your life? nuff said
The indictment ahhhh, so flavorful but I want more, I want he who won't be named to suffer, just like we all suffered the entire time he was in office. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of the end for the orange traitor. When I see his face or image, I upchuck a little bit in my mouth. When will we be rid of this disgusting waste of human flesh?
Last five
Yes - Live close to the edge
Steppenwolf - Monster
Ten Years After - Cricklewood Green
Roger Waters - Amused to Death
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Echo

The cosmic axe was replaced by the cosmic mushroom tool.

And while typing this I got an email from Garcia merchandise marketing that flat rimmed hats are back!

Focus on new releases of live music recordings people, not an endless flow of schwag.

I saw that "flat brim hat". When did they stop calling them baseball hats?

I was expecting a fedora type of hat or a porkpie hat!

And a Pigpen Bowler hat. We could replace the flint steel with the Primal Dead Flame Thrower. We could really get a fire started and camping would be fun again. Just don't point that thing at the car or the children.

They really should just step aside and put us in charge.

Note: Do not put Jerry's hand print on the axe, that would not be cool.
