Golden era Grateful Dead in the most golden city in the Golden State? Yes, DAVE'S PICKS VOLUME 46 features the complete unreleased show from the Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, 9/9/72. Loosen that tie, this ain't a red carpet rodeo - it's the after party that legends are made of. Consistently excellent from start to finish, this West Coast groove showcases tracks that would soon debut on EUROPE '72, solo material from both Jerry and Bob, a riveting iteration of "China>Rider," a couple of Chuck Berry doozies, a bonkers 35-plus "Other One" that hits all the psychedelic highs, and wraps up with a "Casey Jones"/"Sugar Magnolia"/"One More Saturday Night" finale that'll have you wondering why you wore a tie in the first place. Hooray for Hollywood, indeed.

Limited to 25,000 numbered copies, this release was recorded by Owsley Stanley and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering. Oh, and it ships next week so you'll wanna grab a copy while you can.

seems like its taking a while for everyone to get their 46, listened through just once, about to get down with round two this weekend. Now, for apps and horseradish, though I do not have them often, a little bit of horseradish in your bloody mary mix is a nice way to spike it. Raifort sauce is a classic for horseradish, whether the base be bechamel, mayo or just fold it into whipped cream as topping for roast beast. Simple apps like caprese, (fresh mozz with cherry tomatoes and basil leaf), smoked salmon with chive cream cheese, smoked trout or mussels, honeydew melon wrapped with prosciutto. Little pastries like samoosas, empanaditas, stuffed filo pillows, or fritters like pakora, why not mini crab cakes, tapenade, clams casino. Then stuff like oysters on the half shell, escargot in garlic butter, charcuterie, not for everybody.

Pie, as in Octo pie yuck yuck.

Bacon: haven’t had red meat since 1984, but I do like me some Morningstar fake bacon!

APPS: always dug a good hearty healthy crusty Bread, or especially beer bread with spinach and artichoke dip.
The Oasis in Boulder had a fav BITD, great pale ale too, but that place is long gone.
Glenwood Brewpub used to have a delicious cheddar cheese beer soup that came in an artisan bread bowl that was a fav. ISTSHOW, ever been, 15-20 years ago used to be a decent restaurant with great beer, but like most, got worse with new ownership. Usual mo: portions get smaller, favorite recipes either go away, or get wrecked, prices go up…progress…whatever….nothing last as the pranksters say!

46: playing the hell outta it ala the bad old daze when we didn’t have so much to choose from so would play whatever was new to death lol. Still haven’t made it to bonus…all good things, in….
    Did I mention…
    Good Sheet Mon!

K men are starting to scare me.
Just a thought and certainly no offense to Vince or any other supporters of the following teams, but theoretically we’re looking at conference finals made up of not only no teams from Canadaland, but no teams from north of the mason dixion line? Florida, Carolina, Dallas, with Vegas being the northern most location….doesn’t seem right in some way???
Again, no offense ment, just seems weird having all teams from the more tropical regions lol.

Got my new Dave’s 46 and 2023 Bonus CD yesterday. Just finished color-corrected scans of John Vogl’s artwork that’s graces the CD packaging. I've squared the scans as is my obsession. Chromedomebodhi may have even higher res versions shortly, but these should hold you for now. Pass ‘em around, and let the music play!

Just saw the one where he makes a "Galloping Goose" train track riding truck out of junk from the railroad bone yard. Lots of great fabricators out there but Ian has style and imagination. I like what he has done with concept cars too. Now he doesn't want to restore cars anymore, he wants to make art that rolls. Genius stuff.

I like a nice shrimp cocktail. Traditional. The red sauce is the only thing I can stand horseradish in. My sister in NZ likes fried squid rings.

Anyone else watch Full Custom Garage with Ian Roussel? This man is incredible to watch. Imagine watching Leonardo painting the Mono Lisa. Gets all done and decides the smile ain't right, so he just paints over it. Ian does this with metal. With almost no tools and not a lot of measuring, he'll just draw a line with a sharpie and start cutting.

Because calamari is my favorite appetizer. Seriously.
Every time the wife and I check out a new restaurant, if they have it on the menu, we order it. We judge them on it.
When we were dating back in 1997, she had never tried it. I convinced her to give them a shot.
"Eww. No". was her response. Then.
I remember her eyes lighting up after the first bite.
The breading is key my friends.
She enjoys the rings. I prefer the tentacles. So it's a win/win.
Later on, she tried to turn me onto liver and onions. "Eww, no".
It's still "Eww, no", but she loves it.
    Eww.
Twice baked filled potato skins are high on the list as well.
Gimme your favorite appetizers. I'm hungry.
Soups and salads don't count, because that's a different course.

Jack/Oro/Mr Ones - I feel a little like Max Smart now, with the old “Listen, about that Leaf Stanley Cup win…”. Florida beat them every which way, and some. Jack is right - the big guns disappeared. Leaf lament: Maybe next year.
VGuy - Looking really good for the VGK to make it to the final. They are doing a great job containing Edmonton’s dynamic duo.
The upside of having your team lose out is now just being able to enjoy watching the games for the joy of watching the sport. No favourites, no skin in the game.

The Warning is a three piece sister band from Mexico. Look out for them. You heard it here first.
I've been paying attention to them for the past year or so.
Very talented. Have the looks. And the stage presence. The trifecta.
Opened for Foo Fighters and Stone Temple Pilots and will be opening for Muse later this year.
They dropped a new video yesterday. More. The video is well produced and the song kicks ass imo. I love how it slowly creeps from a 4:3 ratio to 16:9. Check em out and let me know what you think.

Indeed, a blast from the past VGUY. I somehow stumbled across a thing saying that Sputnik had put out a 4-disc set/remaster of Flaunt It, mostly remixes and b-sides but also a final CD containing a short live performance from Abbey Road. I had to check it out. Nothing really new there, and it's aged about as well as one would expect, but they had some clever hooks, I'll certainly give them that

Happy Sunday everyone. Got Garcia and Kahn 10/16/85 Santa Cruz playing rn

Had gotten almost all of the show itself by the time the wife and I headed for Vermont, right in the same vicinity as dmcvt was describing ticks abounding... Anyhoo, just lovely scenery all around us, and while driving in Rutland noted mountains in the distance in all directions, and it being such a wondrous thing. And I had yet to get into the Dead that was on my USB, went through mix cds I made that snuck in Yonder Mountain doing Reuben and Cherise for NYE one year and it was included on a Jerry Jams cd for Rex Foundation about 10 years back and Cumberland from Workingman's, as well as Levon Helm's take on Tennessee Jed, otherwise Dead free. Then the wife began to drift in and out of napping, so I put on 46 at a low volume, so now I couldn't hear Phil, but could hear Jerry, some Bob, and a lot of Billy. This gave me a new perspective on the playing, and Jerry was really hot. Bird Song is incredible (a previous listen suggested the same at much better volume, and at which one could hear how locked in Phil and Billy were for this rendition, just amazing, given the nature of the song and their playing styles), with Jerry just ripping it. The Kreutzmann drum roll across his kit in Bird Song is panned beautifully thanks to Owsley's mic placement, and a really well executed version that takes it time even as the band comes back in early. I wasn't as impressed by the Playing. Veneta outshines it, sure, but so do other ones from this monthly period. China Rider was excellent, Phil and Jerry really on it, Bob and Billy, too. Not commenting much on Keith, because another release where you hear him sometimes, but nothing that really stands out. Likely the mix. Wonder why Bear never challenged himself to finally solve the problem of mic'ing Keith, or just buying a damned electric piano? But I digress, love the bluegrassy Friend of the Devil, even if they were shaky on it. The He's Gone is a nice pre-cursor to where it would be in two months, and beyond where it was as a first set song just two weeks before in Berkeley on DaP 24 8/25/72. Truckin' is a blast, Jerry and Bob are tearing it up when they begin an Other One jam, but first Drums, then the beast is unleashed. I've got 4 full listens now of the released version (3 back when first announced on Archive version that seemed most complete), and the one with the wife at low volume featured us driving past a dead turkey in the road, and she remarked "what was that dead animal?" I told her it was a turkey, she said, "No, it was the sound coming out of your Grateful Dead". "Oh." But then we got a nice bit with Brokedown Palace from the Bonus as we drove past a river in the friscalating dusk light.

Hopefully, you like that Other One, Proudfoot, I think it's one of my favorite versions ever. I'd also be so bold as to say Dave screwed up in 2001 when he chose 9/17/72 Baltimore for DiP 23 over this show. I actually pulled that out to listen to it when this was announced and I checked it out on Archive, and I wasn't so impressed by it. But this one, this one is in my top 10 Dave's Picks, probably top 5. Wish the Bonus had the Other One from Jersey City for another jam, but loved the Half Step, never heard Jerry sing one with that much enthusiasm. The vocal mix on the bonus material is way too loud, especially the harmonies. Hence another wish that Other One had made it. But overall very pleased.

....but whether it's Dallas or Seattle, Vegas has the upper hand.
I've been wrong before, but I'm just armchair forwarding here.
No ticks in the SW. Hot here.
Miss Half Step is a tough song to categorize.
So I'm not even going to try.
'It was coming out of your Grateful Dead'. Been there!
Except it's 'that's the Grateful Dead talkin' for ya'.
I have a step granddaughter that says that to me, then rolls her eyes, then gives me a hug and smiles.
It could be worse.

To Vegas and Vguy. Only saw the first period but the skating was fast and furious. Unlike some other games I've watched in the playoffs those two teams spent a lot of time between the blue lines stealing it away from each other. These guys are fast and not afraid to let the defensemen do the defending. They take risks which is more fun to watch.

I thought it was "friscillating" all these years, and was hoping somebody would pick up the reference. An interwebs search discovered not only had I spelt it wrpng in my head all these years, somebody made a song based on the reference, which is the only reason I've even heard of such an archaic word was Owen Wilson's character's absurd concluding paragraph in the reading of his second novel Old Custer ("Now, everybody knows Custer died at Little Big Horn; what this book presupposes is... maybe he didn't?") in The Royal Tenenbaums: The crickets and the rust-beetles scuttled among the nettles of the sagethicket. "Vamanos, amigos", he whispered as he slung the busted leather flintscraw across the loose weave of the saddlecock. And they rode on in the friscalating dusklight.

It was kind of boring. A couple of very odd goals for Dallas.

Vguy - as a Sabres fan, I can’t in good conscience ever back Dallas. So, I’m on your side again. Not a good omen for you.

Gotta go with the Panthers simply because they took out Boston. Very unexpected final four. It feels weird.

I’d normally be rootin for the ultimate underdogs (FLA) but I can’t behind them for several reasons.
Canes meh, and, no offense, like Angry Jack it’s against the law back in Bu faf to ever root for any Dallas team lol.
All that plus I think the Knights are the team to beat currently.
So yeah, sorry Vince, with AJS and myself backing the Knights, hopefully we won’t spread the curse!

Man these fall 72 jams are sweet. Recently got reacquainted with Dicks 23 and 36, yoosah…

The Dallas Stars' owner long-ago screwed over the State of Hockey, aka, Minnesnow-ta, and took our beloved North Stars way down south, so there's no way I can root for them. And if your ponds don't freeze in the winter, then it's difficult for me to root for your hockey team . . . :)

By the time I got the email from RGM it said sold out and the notify me when available tab was under that. Oddly, I had looked on their site less than an hour ago when I saw LMG's post and went through a huge number of GD items, mostly DiPs and Road Trips CDs and never saw the DiP 1 vinyl offering, but I did see the DaP 1 vinyl there. Must have missed it. Dang, that is a great release and this new version even has Phil's missing bass solo. Five minutes late with a dollar in my hand. Dennis, you lucky dog!

funny story-I gifted a DaP46 to a good friend who helped us stay in Ventura for the Skull & Roses Festival this April. He was surprised, did not know of this release. He's not tracking dead.net like we do. He's looking forward to listening to it. In his words, "This show turned me into a deadhead". Sweet.

As with 1stshow, got the email too late for any good to come of it. Not following the 1000 online. I was able to get DiPs 26, 36, 19, and 26 all relatively easily. 19 and 26 had larger runs, and didn't sell out that quickly, more like days, and I think those were limited in first batch online and also like 20 bucks less, too. Bummer, was hoping for this one on vinyl, hope they get me with the email...
