Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? I am definitely in on this one Bob t. Have it going now. Wang Dang Doodle encore! Cool, I loved this tune in the later years and didn't know they played it this early in their career.

The Met Center, former home of the MN North Stars. Saw the boys there in 88 and 89. Today, this is where the Mall of America sits.

Would love to go back in time to see the scene their in 1973, can't imagine.

They usually played at the St. Paul Civic Center in the 1970s, so this is interesting.

Thanks Bob t, good call. Sound quality is really good so far.

    I'm hip.

Also OB - Taper's Compendium confirms Double Time C.C. Rider on 12/5/81 only happened once and is unique.

What'd you all think of that show? I dig it, the boys ate their Wheaties that night (or something!)

BTW - 5/5/91 Set 2 on Jam of The Week, real nice short lil Jam out of Truckin' > Terrapin. Dig it and it's sounding good this AM.

    Happy Friday Gang!

Last night after the obligatory 10-21-78 anniversary listen I started 12-9-81 at China>Rider which wasn’t earth-shattering, then Scarlet>Fire in which the AUD patch went on way longer than I remembered, but then was totally rockin’ to Drums. I didn’t remember that portion even though I’ve listened to the release several times. That was smokin’ and I think one of the reasons Dave picked that show.

I have a lot of 81 shows on a HD that I haven’t listened to yet, but will hold off since, as I pointed out last weekend, the entire 1981 project folders arrived on etree last week. I’m going to grab those this weekend, then will check out some of the shows mentioned here, including the Senator Seagrams show.

Also need to listen to those 87 shows.

Winter’s coming (sorry DV, a little too early) and there’s no hockey until at least January, so I’ll have a lot of time to listen to shows I haven’t heard before.

    Thanks man!

The Saint Of Circumstance out of Space on 5/17/81 caught me off guard, I had to go back and make sure there wasn't a song missing. This is a great show, and further confirms my May '81 being killer theory.
Super cool you were there for this one. It's a total keeper.

Now I wanna hear that March 13 show again.. Damn I'm getting behind.

Just realized it's the 30th Anniversary of my only 1990 show.

LOL, when I opened my device first thing I saw was “7 inches in October” and I thought somehow I went to the wrong site! Yeah, too early for all that!

PARK CITY: nice show, only heard on iPad but good for working.

12/5/81: cool, always wanted to check out this whole show. I know the 1st rocks so it will be good for working. JG was obviously diggin’ BRRB in those days. Believe that 5/17 one really rips...

SPELLING: you can call me anything, just not late for supper....but OB is fine, or Senator in a formal setting 😉

C.C. RIDER: long time so my memory etc, but I seem to recall the dbl time shift was a thing for a while, but it almost sounds like they all weren’t ready for it here? research project for GOGD....when was the first and for how long etc

5/17: I told ya that one just rips! I was just starting to move outta the local circle cause there weren’t enough shows and I was old enough that the rents weren’t gonna try and stop me. I didn’t have a car yet so I decided to take the bus after doing so for Utica in March. So off I go to Syracuse and see if I could score a ticket and go. Remember it was a Beautiful Spring day, not necessarily the norm in upstate. So I get there and it’s the usual scene in those days, very laid back, no shakedowns yet per say. Just a small number of friendly freaks lounging round the ole Aud. Awesome day but nobody had tix....somehow I find out that they’ll sell whatever few remaining from promos, promoter etc. so I manage to get a good spot in line and end up with a ticket!
Not sure where it was located cause I went right for the floor and low and behold just as security is about to come question me, I see an empty seat third row, Garcia side about five people in, boom I slide in and start asking if anyone’s sitting there etc and acting like this is where I belong etc and security backed right off. As I said, things were often pretty loose in those days. So the show soon starts and straight away it’s apparent that JG is ready and ripping.
Now they were still using the big Clare Brothers PA boxes and for whatever reason they didn’t hang them so they were on the ground and thus me being being more to the side they were almost right in front of me. So being that close it was ridiculously loud and believe me in those days I knew loud and this was probably the loudest Dead show I saw. To add to it, JG was trying out the new at the time McIntosh MC 2500 power amp instead of the usual MC 2300. Probably grabbed a few from MAC in nearby Bingo town? So the combination of these factors with JG just ripping was awesome, but I had my first collage final exam the next day and my ears were ringing so bad I couldn’t hear a word the prof said lol. Later, when I got the show on tape it reinforced what a hot show this was and it’s always been my favorite 81 show.

9/26 I don’t recall as much. It was a posse of us up in the side seats about halfway back which was kinda of a weird bummer for me as up until that show I’d always been up front with like 10th row at 11/9/79 being the farthest back I’d been. So up in the seats in a more social setting I’d sorta taken this one for granted. Remember On the Road again, but not too much else music wise? Finally heard it in just the last few years since my cousin said Dave kept playing it etc, so checked it out and it’s another good show, though I still like 5/17 better.
3/13/81: This was the first time I took the bus and went to a show myself. Nasty cold drizzly upstate late winter day. Friday the 13th to boot!
Ran into my peeps from one of the bands I roadied for and though I had hardly any money they talk me into going for dinner since it was so shitty out. So I spend a bunch of money and eat too much, and then grab a bottle of Seagrams as 7/7 was the R&R drink of choice then, at least in the other main band I crewed for. Now I had a pretty good tolerance in those days, but was too green to know that most Deadheads don’t really drink like that, at least not before shows. So I’m stuck in line for hours basically drinking most of it myself, which would of probably been ok except for all the joints....
So the gate opens, which is at the other end from the stage and we run in and not through the normal entrance but run down this isle and try to jump the boards but being toasty, trip and fall several feet to the floor lol. Luckily bumbles bounce so I’m up and running and end up in front of JG. As I say all would of probably been good except now you have the often long wait for the show to start so we sit and start smoking non stop joints. Well like Fat Freddy says getting drunk and then getting high is like pissing in the wind! So of course the whole building starts spinning etc but there’s no way in hell im giving up my spot on the rail. Dumb yute that I was I probably could’ve gone to the rest room and they would of held my spot, but instead I end up standing, more like slumping on the fence and sorta pass out, until, ooopppsss, barfed over the rail onto that little area between the fence and the stage where photogs and security etc would hang. Well some of the folks next to me got uptight even though I followed the number one rule of parting: no shootin’ without a cooler....meaning if you have to, just make sure it’s in a appropriate place. Not on or near people, or in the car or whatnot. So that’s what I did, it wasn’t pretty, but no one got violated. The security guys were grumbling a little but they put some cardboard down and eventually everyone chilled out. So now I’m basically sleeping standing up with the fence holding me up. But the dudes next to me kept trying to get Security to remove me, which wasn’t going to happen lol. Funny thing they were all trippin and got too high and during the second set a couple of them had to be pulled over the fence and carried out. Ha! Rookies! Lol.
So I distinctly remember feeling/sensing, since I was out, the lights going down and of course then the big roar and just as i open my eyes JG comes round the corner of his gear and we lock eyes for a moment and he didn’t look much better than me, or so I thought? He had on a blue or black long sleeve work short with a big burn in the. pocket like he put a half lit J or something in there! Anyway, I used to think this show sucked but after finally hearing it, again because I heard Dave had been playing it, it was yet another nice surprise. So there ya go, those are my 81 stories, and a testimony to how awesome it is to be able to hear these shows all these years later.

Speaking of shows that bloom in the presence of shorter songs ( although 4/21/71 may not actually be that particularly), Daves 21 - 4/2/73 is a good listen. Beautiful playing, but for the most part within the confines of more structured songs.

Love Dave's 21. One of may favorites. Sound quality is A++.

6/10/73- I think may third time through this show and it is so good. Probably my favorite at this point from the box, but I need to listen to the other shows some more. That Eyes is wild. Some really interesting work in the last part of the song. Of course the third set is really fun.

Hope that tracking for #50 hits soon.

5 3 79 thru 7 1 79

Dedicated to GODV!

Tour starts out decent, but nothing special.
Every night seems to gel until late first set on 5/7.
From then on things take off, especially with the second set Shakedown opener.
The next 2 nights, 5/8 and 5/9 are the shin dizzle!
Both shows are ripping good! Only Auds, but not bad. Don’t let that keep you from enjoying these hot shows!
Bill Ricka I heard before and didn’t need to rehash.
The twelfth is good, and Maine perhaps better to close the tour.

6/28 had Aud first, SB second, but not the best show, a bit mellow compared to the previous fireworks. Similar on the 30, but ending on a better note, and a nice HS matrix on 7/1. Probably the best recording of the bunch, but again, the 8 and 9 are must hear shows if you dig 79!

5/6/84 thru 6/14/84 up next
Onward!

Did you say 79 OB? I think I have poked around a bit during that time period and noticed a lack of SBs. Reminds me a lot of 1980, where the SBs are lacking. Hey anyway, I will check out some of the audience recordings OB. Nice job and bring on a 79 Box before we all get too damn old.

No shipping notice yet over here for #50.

They played part of the second set last night on TIGDH. I forgot how smoking the Eyes of the World was. Creative jam and Jerry was on fire.

Similar yet different, Dave's Picks 7 and 15 can cure what ails you (ales you?)

I enjoyed 6/10/73 too. It's interesting listening to Betts and Garcia play off each other. A once in lifetime occurance I guess, so glad someone hit record.

I was thinking of the 7/13 show for the Scarlet/touch/fire because the arrangement derivation reminds me of the Frost Shows in DaP 49. I might do 7/15 for the PITB / UJB. Sometimes in this era the ferocity of Jerry's Playing is contagious. It's also got a late era non-disco Dancin' in Streets and Do It In The Road, a nice prelude to what we would see develop in 1985.

One last later era show and perhaps next time I'll go way back.

It’s a shame DB wasn’t more comfortable with the boys and/or had more chance to jam. All discussed in one of those ABB books out sorta recently.

Gonna wait till summer for that as I’m back in research mode, chipping away at the mother load!

Great show Jim. Good first set, recording is good. Yes, love that Scarlet, Touch, Fire,Man Smart. Good Miracle Stella Blue, Sugar Mag finish and then wait, what, a Dark Star encore. Billy must have loved this one.

This well known and deservedly classic Dead show crackles with an energy and intensity that even the Dead themselves could only rarely conjure. I must admit, this is my all-time favorite Dead show. It isn’t flawless, but it’s very powerful and has killer versions of El Paso, The Rub, Cumberland Blues, Morning Dew, Hard To Handle (best ever!), and The Other One. Throw in the big closing jam with TC and voila---magic!!! Without doubt, this is my “desert island” show………………..

Doc, thanks to you I have that show. It is absolutely top tier stuff! Time for a listen.

4/28/71

That Other_ One is Other Worldly and always takes me back to the first spin of S&_Roses. Among the first records I purchased from my limited revenue stream at the time cutting lawns in the neighborhood.

If I feel in need of an after burner, I'll be sliding in 4/5/71. It's nice to finish this with that closing twofer from this show. Puts me in a good working man's mood to get stuff done. It might even inspire me to cut my own grass.

Edit: The things you have to do to get pass the HeyCow elitists. They did not like the way I discussed cutting my neighbors lawns.

Is that five already? Shoot, didn't even make it to 1980.

Unless it’s the audio track of video.
I’ve recorded video at several shows. They’re on utoob at DeadFloyd69.

Otherwise, with around 4TB of SBDs on HDs, most of which I haven’t listened to yet, there is no reason for me to listen to an AUD recording of GD.

Floyd is a different story because AUDs are mostly what exist.

I can only assume it is true. Finished work a little early today, setting the controls for 5/2/1970. A few drops of tincture under the tongue. Hopping on the John Deere. I expect my afternoon will begin by cutting my grass and end destination unknown.

My only wish is that the Hey_Blow nazi's let this post go through unchanged.
5/1 vs. 5/2. I'm in the 5/2 camp but if you toss in both shows plus the New_Riders from 5/1.. well, lets just throw in 5/6 for a threefor. Trust me, it's going to be alright.

A tip of the glass to what's going on in the world today. I cannot help think of these shows juxtaposed over what's going on in college campuses right now. I refer to my previous statement, chill out a little people, everything's going to be ok. Sit back, listen, enjoy and be.

I love all you guys and girls, the world would be much worse off without us in it.

That's when I realized this was a really different band, and got on the bus, attending the San Jose 1972 show and two of the Berkeley Community Theater shows, one of was the Dark Star>Morning Dew show, which sealed my fate forever.

We made it to May, which means Oberon time here in MN. Finally some warmer weather.

Hope we hear some announcements soon, MUATM and how about the 2024 box set? Man, mum's the word.

Hope all is well out there. Tomorrow I need to finish the Dave's #50 release, which is fantastic to my ears.

Getting in the anniversary listen.

DV, enjoy the Oberon. Too bad it takes so long to get to you.

For all those with an anniversary mentality, think May 11 1969............

Maybe there's a better copy in those banana boxes............

............along with a new and improved Crockett 69 and a complete Chico 68.........

Rock on rockers!!

Doc
May you live as long as you wish and love as long as you live.....

Love that 5/11/91 show Conekid. And yes, the Oberon is back!

Will throw out 5/25/72 to hit up this week. Need to bust out a few more E72 shows this month.
