    Subject: setting me on fire

left the orchestra section during ship of fools and arrived in the loge for the basso profundo MNS - it's the best of the tour so far, i think, and the balcony is shakin' to its raging outro leading. i sit to take a short break, too.

yet another night of the first set seeming to spill over. first half of this second set is well-played, indeed, but the sugaree is the INSANE highlight, and keith and jerry are battling it out. one of the strongest estimateds of tour and i, for one, am happy for the FOTD break. the second half belongs to jerry - eyes is short but stellar and bridges to yet another rip-your-heart-out wharf rat, and NFA showcases some down in the weeds jamming. we're stomping and clapping and grinning our faces off, and then joint is jumping for sure as they close it down. another fine UJB encore sends me out the door, so very deeply in love with this band and its music. is there anything better than being a deadhead?

Is there anything better than being a Dead Head when one of your favorite shows is officially released in its entirety? We'll double down on your sentiments WolfmansBrother, with DAVE'S PICK VOLUME 50: PALLADIUM, NEW YORK CITY, NY 5/3/77, and we'll bring the fire extinguisher to cool you off after you listen to Betty Cantor-Jackson's complete recording. Don't want the party to end? We'll stoke those embers with a few hot tracks from the first set of  5/4/77. Dave's Picks Subscribers score the monstrous second set from 5/4/77 featuring "Scarlet>Fire,"  "Terrapin," 'Playing In The Band," "Comes A Time," and more. Woowee!

    Dicks 12 on vinyl....

....this slut already spent his allotted record $ this month. Thanks Crow, I guess.
Then again, my birthday is next week.
So I have an excuse teacher.
Just listened to 12 a couple of weeks ago. Stays in semi-regular rotation, as it should be in all of our homes.
BTW, this is what I bought at the record store Sunday after seeing my mom. King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana. Phish - Fuego. My Morning Jacket - Z.
I got a little high last night and was totally absorbed in that Gizzard record. Good stuff.
Careful HF. It's a helluva drug my man.
Edit. Good excuse to get 12 Joey. It's for sale on Real Gone. CD that is if you're not the slutty type.
Edit again because hey nows aren't effecting me yet. My father passed from Alzheimers Crow. It's a rough road that one. Peace.

In case you haven't heard, Real Gone is going to issue a vinyl version of Dicks 12. Which is a killer diller, some of jammiest jams ever. It's a run of only 3000, goes on sale Thursday. You've been warned.

Also, I've been trying (trying and trying) to post something to say how grateful I am to everyone who helped sort out my problem with the defective disc. Thanks Doc, Mary, and everybody else!

And also to thank everyone who sent kind words and good karma after I posted about my mom's dementia the other day. There's some very nice humans around here.

Hope this doesn't get Hey Now'd. To the best of my recollection, I am not now nor have I ever been a robot.

On the Hoffman site someone posted a fun thing; a poster (dont know if it is fake..) from Hawaii, june 1970. It clearly states; "the shows will be recorded for future albums" (!).. So this must be multi-tracks..

That poster shows that the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and the New Riders played at the Honolulu Civic Auditorium on June 12 and 13, 1970 but two lists of concerts at the Honolulu Civic Auditorium that I found differ in what they say. One source shows that the Dead played there on both days but only has a setlist for June 13. The other source shows that the Dead and Quicksilver played on the 13th but no mention of the 12th. That source also shows that Steve Miller and the New Riders played there on June 16. All I know for certain is that Quicksilver played the Honolulu Civic Auditorium on the 13th (as shown on the poster) as I have a CD of their performance - and it is a legit release at that.

I'm would think a few watch it, but ARS this week they had a women whose brother collected concert posters. He would send Bill Graham 3 bucks (?) and postage and he would mail out posters. These were 1st pressing deals. She had 47 of them from the Fillmore shows in the late 60's. All in all about 40K worth of posters,,,, the experts said a Hendrix one was worth the most (The Flying Eyeball?),,,, about 6K.

Anyone else buy posters from the Fillmore back in the day?

Simonrob - that one has slipped through my net completely. I'll have a dig round later. I have all sorts of live recordings by them, often the same one twice with a different label on the can. But this is a new one on me, so cheers!

It is called simply "Hawaii 1970" and was on the UK label Gonzo Multimedia. I just looked on their website and it was no longer listed there. It was released in 2014. I guess you'll just have to dig around.

This album appears on Amazon UK. It isn’t available on cd and clicking on vinyl displays an entirely different album. It appears to be streamable on Prime although initial attempts show an error message. Clicking on the track titles does let them play. I do subscribe to Amazon Prime Music so that might be why I can play it.

Simorob and Colin - thanks for the tips about this album. I think I may be able to play this through Amazon Prime, too, although I have never done it before. I saw the cd for sale for £196.00! I might be enthusiastic - but I'm not that enthusiastic.

Hits on the cosmic jukebox this week -

"HMS Donovan" by Donovan - despite featuring one of the most embarrassingly awful songs ( The Pee Song) I have ever heard in my life
"Travelling The Great Circle" - and incredible box set by Ozric Tentacles. All they play are space jams, and have been doing so since 1984. They simply never came down. And still haven't. This box features arguably their 4 best albums, plus much more, with incredible sound quality.

U.S. Blues always sounds great to me in 1974 shows, but a bit throwaway after that

I'm just messing around a little... :)
I feel like we're going to be waiting a while longer.

I got a new phone and found an old phone number for deadnet, I called it and its definitely not deadnet anymore, lol.
Some senior citizen rip-off line. :(

Got my copy of the reissue yesterday. The remastered studio album sounds great! Much much much better than my ancient vinyl copy, which is great because I feel like I can finally appreciate all the weird little things they did to fill out those 32 tracks. Lots of interesting sonic doodads (is that a backwards cowbell) lurking in there.

The live show? Well, I've only listened to about 2/3rds of the first disc but I thought the audio was kind of disappointing, given that it was touted as being "pristine." It's one of those where the levels are being tweaked as we go so that vocals rise and fall in the mix, and if Weir's guitar was plugged in I couldn't hear it. Interesting to listen to, still, if only because Keith is so well audible and he's really playing well. And Garcia is really taking some chances. But the audio's not great, especially for WoS era show. IMO and all the usual disclaimers. Still glad to have it.

The studio album I've always liked, even if it is a relatively slick version of the what the Dead were about. Clearly, they were trying to make a record that radio would like, and that has its plusses and minuses. Like the studio version of Scarlet is wonderful, great energy, really propulsive rhythm playing by, well, everyone. And it's concise enough to get played on radio. But it's also frustrating in a way, because you really want the song to open up and breathe the way it did live, and it's always disappoints me (still!) that it just fades out immediately after that calypso riff at the end comes in. But US Blues really benefits from this "short and sweet" approach, and Lucy and Money are similarly rocking if also similarly misogynistic (tho pretty much everybody was in rock world of '74).

And China Doll is just a fucking miracle. Just sounds otherworldly in this pristine (ha ha) recording: Garcia's incredibly weird solo, those ghostly backing vocals. Wow.

I'm figuring the Half Baked box will be announced any minute now. Probably happened while I was typing this.

Last five, because why not?

Coltrane: Meditations (the quartet version)
GOGD: Mars Hotel
TTB: Crescent (from I am the Moon)
Little Feat: Feats Don't Fail reissue (similar to Mars, studio album sounds great, live bonus material not so much)
Brahms Symphony 1 (a Phil favorite!)

Go to
GQ/John Mayer and Mickey Hart of Dead & Company Talk About Their Big, Strange Sphere Trip—and the Future of the Band

Just got an email from realgone. They have Dick's Volume 28, 1973; and Dick's Vol 32, 1982 back in stock. I grabbed the 1982 Alpine Valley show. I have missed the last few times they got it in stock. So I am very glad to see it and grab it. Only 3 Dick's short, hopefully complete soon.

Would add more to this post, but I already forgot what I was just reading on this board. Losing memory can be a good thing "Officer I don't remember." Cheers to all!

From Nugs - A few nights back Pearl Jam was playing in Seattle. They did a tribute to Bill Walton. Weird to see Mr. Walton on their video screen wearing a big Grateful Dead shirt.

From Nugs - Phish's Live Bait 21 looks awesome!

Got me some reading to do.

Also been over at GD at blogspot. Reading a lot of great stuff. Have known about them for a long time. But really interesting to read articles like 1967 Human Be-In; which of course Bolo with his mother in tow ran across. Let me know if you see this Bolo and I have spoken truth or not.

Cheers again.

"Now the Shorelines Beckon: Hawaii/Alaska '70 '80 ! Primo!

I am just not buying it...and this statement of mine has multiple meanings : )

It just seems like there are many better options at this point in the game...

Whatever GD that exists in the vault from

1967
1968
1969

A whole BUNCH of that

A mix of 70 and 80?

Ok

That stuff from the 60s and Greek shows are better options

I truly think that if that material exists in the vault it would have been released by now.

Hawaii and Alaska?

While I don't NEED it, I certainly WANT it.

Are you for real, LMG? Or are you trying to play my greedy mind?

....family is out, so I get to crank the big boy. Currently on China Rider.
Wasn't this the show where it was extremely windy and the sound was going everywhere? I recall reading about it.
Never mind. The band just mentioned the wind in between Rider and El Paso....El Paso!!!! Yay!
Idk Crow. Sounds mighty fine to me.
There was a strange warble during Sugaree, but otherwise chugging right along.
'74 China Riders are so, so good. Check out Phils vox during the sun in my backdoor verse. Tasty.
It's officially baseball season. Checks in on the Marlins. Disregard. It's officially Frisbee season.

With these predictions, is not always easy to spot who knows what they are talking about, and who just likes to look as though they know what they are talking about. In life generally, most people fall into the second category.

40 years ago today I was at Wembley to see The Stones. Ably supported by a loose limbed Black Uhuru and George Thorogood and the Destroyers. The Stones set was released as part of the "Tattoo You " box set that came out a year or two ago. Top banana. Although, unlike with Dead sets, they don't make it clear which night is included. "Chantilly Lace" is included on the cd, and I don't remember them playing that when I saw them. And believe me, I would if they had.

Thanks for the heads up on Phish Live Bait,,, I was surprised I missed getting 20 when it came out, but 20 & 21 down. Hard to beat FREE! Great sounding, got Maze playing right now.

Also too saw and bought the Dicks (28 & 32) from Real Gone Music. Boy they know how to move product, bought yesterday in mail today! Guess Jeff Bozo taught them well :-)

I like the idea of the two new states getting a box. Never matters to me what the box is, I'll take what they dish out.

No further words from Experience on 2/11/69 vinyl. Not happy about Experience, they seem to sell stuff that hasn't even been pressed yet (ordered back in Feburary!)

I'd say saylavee, but I can't spell it.

Enjoy

PS - listening to Live Bait,,,, they did My Friend, My Friend to the music of Little Drummer Boy. Wild or Odd?

I went back to my emails for the PacNW '73-'74 box set (since it was announced later in the year than last year's box) but I couldn't find the email w/ the announcement. I preordered in June 2018 but there's a post on dead.net about the box that seems to be dated May 8th. Release date was Sept 7th.

Separately: I went digging within an hour of that reddit post about "Shorelines Beckon" (using both page source view and Chrome inspector) but I was unable to find any of that HTML in the new releases page. Hmmm. Probably doesn't mean anything. But it would be the work of a minute to fake that screenshot...

Interesting stuff. What is Chrome Inspector? You guys definitely know a lot more than me.

The LTTR Box was announced in July and released in October, so there is definitely precedent for fall releases, however, they are typically larger box sets.
