Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Though Donna Summer does have many fine tunes, I’m specifically referring to I Feel Love.
Smoke a fatty, or perhaps just as the trip is starting to take hold, sit dead center with a good system and crank THAT song.....it’s a stoners delight I tell ya, Healy would be proud of all that auto panning goodness, lol......seriously, this tune is sixteen seventies stoned in your room with your black light and posters groovy cool!

Polished Jim, that’s the word. The Hampton shows from my POV are better, say as a concert going DH freak, but as a finished, professionally produced product for market, I think Nightfalls is better. The song list, the flow, tightness,(perhaps their playing more to the recording so a tad safer?), and yes, as good as Hampton sounds, it’s yet another one that frustratingly just doesn’t come through on tape and do the shows justice. We’ve touched on this before about similar feelings with 10/14/83, and 3/27/88 for starters. 10/16 does seem to breath better and is perhaps mastered better? Again, this is probably splitting hairs as all four 89 fall releases sound good, just not the same...
So big 10/16/89 tonight, need to wait for proper conditions to manifest and align with the flux capacitor etc. Maybe I’ll go for that 84 show, or sometime this WE I’ll have to spin some of that awesome Acoustic Warfield stuff from last year. Still have some killer 74 someone generously sent me to rip and crank, need to find that Dico 78 Dead that was the impetus for this ramble, and probably will start the Spectrum 89 shows to keep on the path....
Speaking of, spent a couple rotations with 10/15/89 yesterday whilst continuing my Swiss madness in the basement. Another perfectly good 89 show, but it didn’t move me as much as 10/14, which is funny cause that one had to grow on me a bit. Some of it is probably just set lists, but 10/14 seemed to build up nicely overall. 10/15 has some notable tunes for the time; Standing on the Moon, Just a Little Light, Crazy Fingers, Victum, Stella, Box oRain, and even a Far From Me! Like I say, good show, just didn’t flow for me? Probably just me....
GOLLUM, you still along for this ride? What say you old chap? And I think Jim needs to fire up the Deer and head back to fall 73 as we appear to have lost ole Bluecorn chasing some minx in the parking lot after the Syracuse show???
    Ok, ONWARD!

    Happy Birthday Bob!

Been hearing some great music this week.

After the deep dive into 10/14/80 on Wednesday (great tape with a couple small issues & the audience recording is real nice too, overall not too shabby for a bootleg!) Thursday's Deadcast presented us with a deep dive into the Warfield shows.

    Serendipity?

That episode was fascinating, and the supplementary material is highly recommended. I believe based on some quick sleuthing that the live footage in the mini-doc seems to be from 10/13/80, as they show footage of an Around And Around > Johnny B. Goode as well as The Other One and all those tunes were played on 10/13. Plus from the sounds of things, the filming took place more towards the end of the run based on Bill Graham's decision to document the occasion. Well done Mr. Graham! And Mr. Jarnow!

Bounced from that to 10/15/84, which is a personal favorite. I love October '84. The PITB on this show is real good, and Jerry's furious fanning burst in Wharf Rat gives me a smile every time. Good stuff and again I have to give some props to the Audience recording by Rick Pauline, it's a really great capture.

Add in the newly released American Beauty The Angel's Share outtakes which are amazing.
DaP V36 Announcement of Dave's First & Charlie Miller's favorite '87 show. (Note: CM mentions that he really likes 3/26/87, so I don't wanna presume too much)
Some killer Garcia interviews from '81 & '83.
Damn it was a Grateful Day!

Today as you all venture forth into a Nightfall of Diamonds, I've noticed some cosmic 1981 nods.
Jam of the Week has a little bit of 5/2/81 which is sounding real nice and our good pal Bolo mentioned 3/28/81 on the DaP V36 forum. Speaking of... lil bit dicey over there.

    Alright, lots to listen too!
Shall we go, you and I, while we can?

Ha.. so funny you mention that. I had a big day and went to decompress in the tub last night.. didn't quite have the time or energy for 10/14/80 and picked nightfall instead somewhat randomly. I made it through the first set and just dipped my big toe into the second set before I had to help with homework and put my son down for the night.

...and I was unconsciously comparing this to Hampton, not something I often do. I think Nightfall is more polished, it flows better and it might just sound a little better too. I think Hampton sounds good but I have always been critical of the mix. The instrumentation sounds cluttered and Nightfall has a little better separation. It's probably a better show, but it doesn't have the surprise and excitement of the Hamptons. Oro alluded to this a couple weeks ago, 10/8 might just be a better show overall than 10/9, but the DS, DDHNM and Attics, like watching BAR BAR BAR come up on the slot machine.

I think Nightfall might just be better. The sound felt better and the vocals, again.. just a touch better?. The show is likely just as good, but I wouldn't trade it for either of the Hampton shows. The best word choice I can come up with is in the same league. I might add to this after I listen to the rest of the second set later today. So funny to hear this mentioned after my deep dive into the first set last night. Serendipitous.

I'm staying away from the 36 thread for a while.. poor ventilation and too few porta-potties.. somebody should light a match or spray some Febreze or something. Visualizing a modified fire hose that instead of spraying water to cool everyone off on a that horrid, hottest day of the summer tour, it contains a foaming mixture of cleansing spring scents with just enough sanitizer to cut through the stench. Wash all my troubles away....

Edit: I lied.. had to reply to the book reference on the cover art. I like to read.

Oroborous, Donna Summers? Okay, I will have to admit I haven't heard a Donna Summers tune in a long, long time.

And then there is the Dead, made it through so many different eras and stuck to their guns, thank god. Never waivered.

I think Dave's chat put the idea of a second box set for 2020 to rest. It is not going to happen. Bummer.

#36 with two complete shows is a great bonus however, can't wait.

    Stay well out there.

Edit. Okay I did and still do like Earth, Wind and Fire. Not sure if they are considered Disco?

10/15 another of those “days”...Remembering my ma 2016, first and only St Stephen 1983, My only Florida shows including 10/15/88, etc, etc, some days just seem to have more happen? Like just minutes away from the Big Chat!!
But today we’re going to continue on with 10/15/89. Been through 10/14 a bit and really enjoyed it.
Starts out pretty standard, decent performance and energy. Followed by a nice FOTD one of only 2 (10/25) on the tour.
Then after Bobs quick psychedelic cowpoke side trip, we get a sweet first set closing of Help>>Slip>>Franks!
This set started out with a nice relaxed vibe that built nicely into a real treat. Second set picks right up where they left off with a nice Foolish Heart, good WomenR, but perhaps not quite the fire of the summer versions i.e., 7/4/89.
But the big surprise, ok, we’ll after the H-S-F, was a nice Stand alone Scarlet, followed up by Truckin’ leading the trip into the Weird Zone, which is another 89 space fest. Out the other side with another surprise and the only China Doll of the tour, and fourth of only four for the year! Perhaps presenting this chestnut is how they get away with a quick Saturday night show on this NY crowd? Though now that I look, it’s close to 140 minutes, so mostly looks short on paper I guess?
But non the less, after the China Doll, big Rocking One Mo Saturday to bring it home, and a Muddy River to send em out into the night with a peaceful easy feeling.
Not gonna say it quite hangs with the big dogs on the tour, but it could definitely work as “filler” on a box due to cool set list and the big carrot for me, multi-track madness! Ok, onward! Today’s first call is 10/15/89, but with all kinds of other great suggestions going on here. Want to check out that 84, in fact if anyone wants more 84, I can recommend 10/20/84!
Still looking to find the Stayin Alive madness y’all were on about 4/24/78. That sounds like must hear viewing!
STAYING ALIVE: funny, I hated that shit back in the day....loathed it, aaaaaa, like the closed minded yute I was, pretty much couldn’t tolerate anything popular....”not cool” idiot! Anyway, some of that music like a lot of things, has really grown on me. Don’t get me wrong I don’t go up to the stereo room on Friday nights, get properly tuned and go for the disco. But occasionally when the stars align I admit I can dig some disco! I even made a 2 disc volume of hits of my choosing that I call “Pedro Mix”. I’ve done this with several artists of genres and did the Disc mix for my buddy and former associate’s kid. He’s liked many of my mixes, especially the Soul Jazz, so asked me to make a disco mix for his little girl who was getting the Boogie Fever! They loved it, my misses really loves it (“anything but dead”) LOL, and I do too!
Some time, when your feeling extra groovy 😉, fire up Donna Summers I Feel Love on a good system and deep listen in the captains chair, loud of course! Follow that with Stayin Alive, and see if that doesn’t get ya outta the chair! We all ripped on the Bee-Gees back in the day, and some for good reason, but my cousin worked on their studio a bunch back in I think the 90s and he said they were cool as shit and NOBOODY to this day, even his buddy Lenny K, smokes as much weed as the them! Too funny!
I love the stuff that comes round here that jump starts all kinds of thoughts and memories!

BTW can't get enough of this 1970 cache of studio outtakes.
Props to Dead.net on this day of announcement (fingers crossed)
I really wanted some 1970 this year.. preferably never-before-released or tapes we thought lost (9/17 & 9/19 looking at you) and what'd they do?
Gave us a treasure trove of unknown studio outtakes from both 1970 albums.

Not sure if there is a better year, so many great shows and yes, sound quality on releases have varied over the years. Would be interesting to hear 10/19 with Plagent.
I think the HCS Box sounds better than the PNW box.

Which reminds me, I should listen the Des Moines show tomorrow.

Would love to send some rain your way Jim. We have had more rain here in the last three months than we had in the previous three years.

July should bring us the 2024 Box reveal and for sure Dave's Picks #51. What will it be?

I saw that video hanging around there.. like an hour and a half. I've been crazy busy doing useless crap for other people lately.. so I only got about a third of the way through it last night. It must have been uploaded recently.

Needing a pick me up, how about 5/7/89, something someone we all know and love mentioned on the Dave's 50 thread. I don't think I have listened to it.

Sorry about your rain DVikes. If you pee in the river I live on it would probably double the flow. (not that I am recommending peeing in rivers, power to the fishies)

Sweet, fun (partial) listen yesterday - Cold Rain and Snow through Samson. Phil way dialed up in the mix - that Let it Grow opening - whew. The Samson entrance may be the most laid back, in that '76 way, that I've ever heard. May rewind and def will finish that show. 9/27/76 you say?! Onward back in time to the show that was the day before!!

Excellent show, for sure

Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work......

On September 27, 1976, the Dead brought the thunder AND the lightning. I should know, I was there. It's a long story, but here's the Reader's Digest version:

It's a long way from Amherst, Massachusetts to Rochester, New York. We completely missed out on the June Music Hall shows, were disappointed by Colt Park, and were hot to see the Dead. Why Rochester? I'm afraid that reasoning is lost to the ravages of time and memory, but off we went. We took our excellent doses too early, and by the time we hit town we were on one of the outer rings of Saturn.

Even though Providence 74 was still somewhat fresh in our faulty memories, Rochester impressed us, especially the very big, bobbing & weaving, waves crashing second set.

How we made it there and back in one piece, only our guradian angel can tell...........

The man who has perceived God looks upon all types of men as dream motion-picture images, made of the relativities of the light of cosmic consciousness and the shadows of delusion......

Rock on,

Doc
Long before the awakening of thought on earth, manifestations of cosmic energy must have been produced which have no parallel today......

Pretty sweet Doc, I would have loved to see them in 76.

How about a pick?

7/31/82, Manor Downs from the 30 Trips Box. I am channeling an 82 show for #51.

Thanks for the visuals.

It happens to best of us.. you try to time everything perfectly and it kicks in way before your ready to follow the yellow brick road in the land of Oz. That cracked me up resulting in a waste of some perfectly good coffee.

As for 51, there are some good sounding boards from 82 and Jerry's voice is mostly in fine shape compared to what was to become. I get the feeling one of these days we are going to get a Bruce show too. With all the back and forth on the Dave's 50 page Halloween 91? Hopefully we will get a good one. I'd really like to see a banana box or something very, ,very old and very very primal. It's been a long time since we got anything earlier than 69. If we get anything discussed, I'd be happy. Gotta admit, when the 77 came I was simply not in the mood for another 77. Still, it's an interesting release and I am sure I will warm up to it once I am fully in the mood. I hope they dial back on repetitive offerings a bit though and reach just beyond their comfort zone. At this point, to me, that's the sweet spot.

I would really like to know exactly what is in the vault and the quality of the tapes. Just a peeksie. After this heat wave we are going to step up efforts on that tunnel under the vault.

I'm going to play something with a Cold Rain and Snow. Replacing an exterior window in this heat has turned me into a giant, surly raison.

There’s enough material for 2 Boxes if it can all be cleaned up. Some shows have that buzzing or distortion that I had previously read somewhere was caused by a loose cable or something in Phil’s system.

Saw TTB last year with Los Lobos, this year with Little Feat. Both shows were outstanding. Derek Trucks is a savant. Susan certainly no slouch, either. Worth $150 per ticket? Depends on one's financial situation.

Wife and I had a great time at a Bruce Hornsby show last week. He's still so good, his band always tight and having fun. Earlier saw Gov't Mule, Bonnie Raitt, plus Dead & Co. at the Sphere a couple weeks ago.

I love how well-behaved deadheads can take over a large city like Las Vegas for a few days. Looking at the gawkers who don't "get" the deadheads reminds me of those 1967 bus tours in the Haight pointing out all the filthy, miserable hippies to startled vacationers. Pretty hilarious!

I had a blast in LV. The visuals in the Sphere were mind-blowing, seats vibrating and bouncing during Rhythm Devils, just a great show all around.

Staying at the hotel attached to the Sphere, every time the elevator door opened, I said, "Oh, no. Deadheads!" I waited for the expected frowns before admitting my shared allegiance, eliciting hugs and high-fives. What a privilege to be part of such a kind community!

So grateful to be seeing live shows again after the musical desert during the Covid lockdowns. As Joni said, "Don't it always seem to go, you dont know what you got 'til it's gone."

Thanks for the info guys. I better step up to the plate and buy the tickets. They are playing at the renovated armory in downtown Minneapolis. Seems like a cool venue.

I'm a shiny new member, never had the privilege to go on tour, discovered the dead way too late in my life unfortunately. Always been on the search for the best song but there's too many as I've learned, watching you guys chat whooping off dates is like me talking RC car parts I getting all technical but it's so impressive and cool and now with those dates I'm going to go hunt them down and see what's so great about them and learn on this never-ending journey nice to meet y'all hope I didn't say too much! 😄

Welcome, always good to see a new face.

Super excited about this new box. OB? I think you did this tour a while back, so you must be excited?

How about 10/17/72 from the still not sold out LTTR box.
Who is with me?

Ice rider, and good ole DV, oh, and Bolo too, and, and, “all my friends, come around….”
It’s like old home daze lol
All that’s missing is Jimmy.
Glad yer back on water, but easy on that busted wing Hoss ; )

I have not “done the tour” YET, DV, but I’ve heard all the included shows except the third one?
Back when, 78 was another “fly over” because I didn’t put the work in, and relied too much on written nonsense. I started out getting weened on lots of 78 boots at the then current time, so that and negative comments had me uninterested, “until…until, until I say, that fateful day”, no not SF in ruins, but until DaP 37!
I’m sure I’ve pontificated enough on glorious DaP 37 (along with 43 and 49), my favs from last few years,(thanks so much D & C= Dave and company lol) but 37 really shown me the light and got me down the spring 78 rabbit hole! And of course being a audio idiot, this tours Betty’s are Magnifico! So, yeah, I’m psyched fo sho!

New blood, awesome!
Better late than never icerider!
Don’t be a feared, we don’t bite..usually lol
Only rule perhaps, don’t be a dick!
Best advice. Don’t read too much on the internet lol
Make up your own damn mind, there is no such thing as right or wrong. Just many flavors as Doc would say. Learn what you like by listening, not reading what others like. Comments make good starting points, the rest is up to you…
I like to read about shows after I’ve checked em out to get my own opinion.
If you get confused, just listen to the music play!

Jump on in, the waters fine!

Edit: DV, I’ve only streamed TTB recently, from the Greek.
Totally enjoyed it. Not going to get weird and go on tour, but I bet they’d be awesome to see live at least once! In fact, I bet their even better live.
WTH, it’s only money, and hey, you get to have a nice night with your Other One!
