Since we're all going to have a fair amount of spare time on our hands for the foreseeable future, what about starting another thread where we all listen to the same show/release on a given day and then share impressions afterward? Folks can submit suggestions and one person (not me) picks what we'll all listen to - call it Deadnet Picks or something. Anyway, if this idea is deemed to have merit, I'd suggest one of the loyal regular posters take the lead and do the picking - y'all can decide who. Might be fun. If it does go forward, I nominate Dick's Picks 18 for the first listen. Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Excellent advice Jimbo.

I listen to new CD arrivals to confirm that they are not defective, then make a disc image on a HD. I then type in the track names and make any necessary edits (removing those stupid overlap transitions between CD’s), and export the files as Sd2f. The Sd2f file is then used to make copies in various formats: AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, AAC-320 (each format on a separate HD).
The ALAC files go onto micro SDXC cards for my iBasso music players (DX80 and DX120), and into iTunes for my iPod 5 Classic which a few months ago I upgraded to 1 TB using an iFlash Quad.
The AAC-120 and FLAC files are for playing from USB drives in cars.
With the AIFF files I burn 2 copies to CD-R as backups (glad I started doing that now that the CD rot issue has been brought to our attention), and listen to one of the copies to confirm that the files on the HD are not corrupt.

I then make multiple HD backups

Where do I find the time?
I don’t play video games, I don’t go to movies, and I watch very little TV (no Netflix or other subscriptions). I do watch a lot of hockey but I can see and hear the TV from where my computers are, so I try to have the computers running and converting audio files/burning discs while watching hockey.

I do get to listen to a lot of GOGD.

    Ah-ha! Now that makes sense.

    Thanks JACK BALLER!
I now know with the help of your response and a quick google search that Rip Van Winkle is one of the Great Northern Catskills best-loved figureheads.
That makes so much sense, and the regional touch is really cool.

This came out in 1996 and I've always questioned the marketing angle as the first thing I thought of was why would they release this if they thought it was a snooze fest?

But lo!! It's quite a bit more clever than I.. and it's pretty keen.
(I didn't recognize ole Rip in the bushes and thought that was just some stoned hippie laying there;)

That clears up a lot and makes me like this release that much more.

DAVE ROCK: Dosin' at the Knick ain't bad either as I'm sure there was a lot of that too...

Well, you just can't beat that.
Good music and I learned a few things.

The Good Ole Grateful Dead strikes again!

Given the album cover and Albany's proximity to the Catskill Mountains, "Dozin" is a reference to the Rip VanWinkle story. Deeply ingrained in those of us from Upstate NY!

What's the origin story of that title?

I'm gonna blame that title for me always blowing off this release.. cause it's a bad ass show.
And it's not a snooze fest even if it's marketed as one!
(This is all tongue in cheek btw, keep up the good work Dead.net and see comments below about Fade In & Out Tracks if anyone who produces these great CDs read this stuff)

I thoroughly enjoyed all of that.

The Set 2 PITB > UJB > Terrapin > Mind Left Body > Drums is a spring '90 highlight!
Inventive, fresh, strong singing. Damn these people that release this stuff might be on to something:)
Space > Wheel > Watchtower real nice, usually tire of later Watchtowers, but this was played with some real gusto.
Stella Blue even caught my daughter's attention, she said "this one is really good Dad, did Jerry write this?"
But got pissed when I told her that NFA was a cover, she mentioned that should be a Dead song.
AWBYGN is always a treat and Jerry sounds like he's really enjoying delivering this one.

    Far OUT!

I'm stoked that came up, thanks to DEADVIKES for keeping us on course with releases and Thanks to the GD for breaking that one up all into pieces so that I didn't really want to listen to it that much and could really enjoy it today!

RE: JIMINMD I agree that trying to patch up fade in & outs is a pain for real.
If the power's that be read this stuff a couple of separated Fade In & Fade Out tracks placed at the beginning and the end can easily be added to any CD to keep continuity and easily deleted by the consumer to create seamlessness for the hardcore freaks. Just saying.. that'd be great!

Ive always been a gear geek. BITD no matter how poor i was, hell I often didn’t have a car, but from high school on I always had me at least a decent stereo. So I’ll talk gear or tell stories with all y’all anytime, but I fear there are many here among us who feel this is but a joke!

Phil’s killin’ it on the intro to Help, and they nail the start, shit their nailing things like a damn carpenter all over this! Always loved that Loser! Nice OMSN end of set change up. Smooth spacey, but tight, Playin’, awesome jam and transition into UJB, then like a Swiss watch, Jers not messin’ around, head first into this smooth Terrapin etc, and of course that sweet jam. Moments like that were what kept me still going after all the years....And all this goodness even before a great 90 D/S midi fest, it’s a shame Lee eSdee and I weren’t hanging out at this time..
Wheel, Watchtower when it was fresh, Stella...oh Stella, sigh, Oh to be able to hear Jer live bring it all down, way down, like during a Stella or Dew one last time, to lay me down, sigh.

Well, ya knew they’d be saving that one...no, it probably had to be NFA, with the still fresh and always welcome (to this day) Bid You Goodnight!

For those who care, spackling coming along fine.

ML-9600 - intrigued me enough to look also. Went to their web, yes, appears discontinued. I read their description and thought, "shit, that's gonna be a few bucks." Was shocked high price I saw (for ten seconds of looking) was 300 bucks. Still don't think I need one, but a lot cheaper than I had in mind. I was thinking 1-2k. Why I'm not on the price is right.

Home network/wi-fi/wired - two cents on this. My wi-fi sucked for a sundry of reasons. Found these thing by EERO, they replace your current wifi. I bought the 3 unit box. They talk to each other and can balance the load. Also learned about "switches" (I think that's the name). Stupid little cheap boxes that act almost like a usb hub. Run a cat 5 wire out of router, plug into this thing and bang you got 6 more holes you can plug cat 5 wire into. So one cat 5 wire into attic, into switch and then a cat 5 to each room. The switch I got runs off 5 volts. One of my cat 5 wires goes to eero box 2, other side of house in tv room. Box 1 is connected directly to router. Box 3 in other end of house, close enough to box 1 to run wi-fi between them, but communication between 1 & 2 are wired.

    Got that?

I've always liked Dozin, my era I guess. I go with the crowd mike added in. But the recording I think is great. Used to listen to the disc a lot when first came out on good stereo. I need to splice the 2 "spaces" into 1 space, just because.

Playing Dick in car!?! I would never complain, I'm an Auto-Erotic. Owned a repair shop for years, fixed cars long time.

    Back to spackle.

Not sure if there is a better year, so many great shows and yes, sound quality on releases have varied over the years. Would be interesting to hear 10/19 with Plagent.
I think the HCS Box sounds better than the PNW box.

Which reminds me, I should listen the Des Moines show tomorrow.

Would love to send some rain your way Jim. We have had more rain here in the last three months than we had in the previous three years.

July should bring us the 2024 Box reveal and for sure Dave's Picks #51. What will it be?

85, 77 and 69? 91?

I saw that video hanging around there.. like an hour and a half. I've been crazy busy doing useless crap for other people lately.. so I only got about a third of the way through it last night. It must have been uploaded recently.

Needing a pick me up, how about 5/7/89, something someone we all know and love mentioned on the Dave's 50 thread. I don't think I have listened to it.

Sorry about your rain DVikes. If you pee in the river I live on it would probably double the flow. (not that I am recommending peeing in rivers, power to the fishies)

Sweet, fun (partial) listen yesterday - Cold Rain and Snow through Samson. Phil way dialed up in the mix - that Let it Grow opening - whew. The Samson entrance may be the most laid back, in that '76 way, that I've ever heard. May rewind and def will finish that show. 9/27/76 you say?! Onward back in time to the show that was the day before!!

Excellent show, for sure

Thunder is good, thunder is impressive; but it is lightning that does the work......

On September 27, 1976, the Dead brought the thunder AND the lightning. I should know, I was there. It's a long story, but here's the Reader's Digest version:

It's a long way from Amherst, Massachusetts to Rochester, New York. We completely missed out on the June Music Hall shows, were disappointed by Colt Park, and were hot to see the Dead. Why Rochester? I'm afraid that reasoning is lost to the ravages of time and memory, but off we went. We took our excellent doses too early, and by the time we hit town we were on one of the outer rings of Saturn.

Even though Providence 74 was still somewhat fresh in our faulty memories, Rochester impressed us, especially the very big, bobbing & weaving, waves crashing second set.

How we made it there and back in one piece, only our guradian angel can tell...........

The man who has perceived God looks upon all types of men as dream motion-picture images, made of the relativities of the light of cosmic consciousness and the shadows of delusion......

Rock on,

Doc
Long before the awakening of thought on earth, manifestations of cosmic energy must have been produced which have no parallel today......

Pretty sweet Doc, I would have loved to see them in 76.

How about a pick?

7/31/82, Manor Downs from the 30 Trips Box. I am channeling an 82 show for #51.

Thanks for the visuals.

It happens to best of us.. you try to time everything perfectly and it kicks in way before your ready to follow the yellow brick road in the land of Oz. That cracked me up resulting in a waste of some perfectly good coffee.

As for 51, there are some good sounding boards from 82 and Jerry's voice is mostly in fine shape compared to what was to become. I get the feeling one of these days we are going to get a Bruce show too. With all the back and forth on the Dave's 50 page Halloween 91? Hopefully we will get a good one. I'd really like to see a banana box or something very, ,very old and very very primal. It's been a long time since we got anything earlier than 69. If we get anything discussed, I'd be happy. Gotta admit, when the 77 came I was simply not in the mood for another 77. Still, it's an interesting release and I am sure I will warm up to it once I am fully in the mood. I hope they dial back on repetitive offerings a bit though and reach just beyond their comfort zone. At this point, to me, that's the sweet spot.

I would really like to know exactly what is in the vault and the quality of the tapes. Just a peeksie. After this heat wave we are going to step up efforts on that tunnel under the vault.

I'm going to play something with a Cold Rain and Snow. Replacing an exterior window in this heat has turned me into a giant, surly raison.

A Plangentized/Normanized Box of summer ‘85 next year for 2025 would be grate.
There’s enough material for 2 Boxes if it can all be cleaned up. Some shows have that buzzing or distortion that I had previously read somewhere was caused by a loose cable or something in Phil’s system.

They played the PITB from this one on Satellite radio about a week ago and I wondered why I have not hit it since the initial listen.

They played the Stanger opener from 11/30/80 today and I felt like diving into that show for a repeat also.

I'm waiting for Dave's 51 to get my religion also. No offense meant doc but I do find myself reveling in that first Full Norman listen.

Saw TTB last year with Los Lobos, this year with Little Feat. Both shows were outstanding. Derek Trucks is a savant. Susan certainly no slouch, either. Worth $150 per ticket? Depends on one's financial situation.

Wife and I had a great time at a Bruce Hornsby show last week. He's still so good, his band always tight and having fun. Earlier saw Gov't Mule, Bonnie Raitt, plus Dead & Co. at the Sphere a couple weeks ago.

I love how well-behaved deadheads can take over a large city like Las Vegas for a few days. Looking at the gawkers who don't "get" the deadheads reminds me of those 1967 bus tours in the Haight pointing out all the filthy, miserable hippies to startled vacationers. Pretty hilarious!

I had a blast in LV. The visuals in the Sphere were mind-blowing, seats vibrating and bouncing during Rhythm Devils, just a great show all around.

Staying at the hotel attached to the Sphere, every time the elevator door opened, I said, "Oh, no. Deadheads!" I waited for the expected frowns before admitting my shared allegiance, eliciting hugs and high-fives. What a privilege to be part of such a kind community!

So grateful to be seeing live shows again after the musical desert during the Covid lockdowns. As Joni said, "Don't it always seem to go, you dont know what you got 'til it's gone."

Ice rider, and good ole DV, oh, and Bolo too, and, and, “all my friends, come around….”
It’s like old home daze lol
All that’s missing is Jimmy.
Glad yer back on water, but easy on that busted wing Hoss ; )

I have not “done the tour” YET, DV, but I’ve heard all the included shows except the third one?
Back when, 78 was another “fly over” because I didn’t put the work in, and relied too much on written nonsense. I started out getting weened on lots of 78 boots at the then current time, so that and negative comments had me uninterested, “until…until, until I say, that fateful day”, no not SF in ruins, but until DaP 37!
I’m sure I’ve pontificated enough on glorious DaP 37 (along with 43 and 49), my favs from last few years,(thanks so much D & C= Dave and company lol) but 37 really shown me the light and got me down the spring 78 rabbit hole! And of course being a audio idiot, this tours Betty’s are Magnifico! So, yeah, I’m psyched fo sho!

New blood, awesome!
Better late than never icerider!
Don’t be a feared, we don’t bite..usually lol
Only rule perhaps, don’t be a dick!
Best advice. Don’t read too much on the internet lol
Make up your own damn mind, there is no such thing as right or wrong. Just many flavors as Doc would say. Learn what you like by listening, not reading what others like. Comments make good starting points, the rest is up to you…
I like to read about shows after I’ve checked em out to get my own opinion.
If you get confused, just listen to the music play!

Jump on in, the waters fine!

Edit: DV, I’ve only streamed TTB recently, from the Greek.
Totally enjoyed it. Not going to get weird and go on tour, but I bet they’d be awesome to see live at least once! In fact, I bet their even better live.
WTH, it’s only money, and hey, you get to have a nice night with your Other One!
