Been talked about here lately, and, had it been a single show rather than a compilation, we'd probably be talking about it in the same conversation as Cornell, Veneta, etc. Or perhaps even Gainesville?? Stay safe and healthy, friends - this planet needs as many Deadheads as possible.

10/31/1970 last live Viola Lee Blues!

Fifty years ago this time I had arrived at Stony Brook by hitchhiking from the panhandle, of Connect over the Throggs Neck Bridge and out the Island to S.U.N.Y. First time seeing the Dead away from the Fillmore. 1970 rural Long Island would have been a different world from now.
Charlie from Brooklyn was numero uno Dead Freak in those days. I met him before the Halloween shows at the student union. He was playing a cassette he made the night before on a high end recorder, boom box. To my memory that was the first Dead tape I ever heard aside from records. Vintage Dead and then Historic Dead were considered like bootlegs.
I recently listened to the complete night from 10/31/70 during the last full moon October 1, same time as breaking a four month Ganga fast. It was blissfull. Otherworldly. NRPS was great with Garcia on pedal steel. Relisten ing now. I easily bought tickets for the two shows. Although everyone was let in free for late show around midnight. I vaguely recall being on Gymnasium floor for early show. Late show was on the top bleacher on the end closest to the stage not 80’ away. One light projection man had a wizard get up with a pointed hat. Pigpen wore a psychedelic fireman’s hat, (for a few songs)each section was painted a different day-glow color.
After the late show ended (3am or later?) I left the Building out the exits behind the stage. Met Pigpen in passing as he was getting in his limo as I was funneled down the police barricade right behind him. I told him thanks, he asked me “did jya have a good time?” , to which I replied. “Definitely!”, . Pig;”that’s good”. My one time meeting the man.
Afterward vaguely remember catching a ride in a Dodge Challenger that drove close to a 100 mph. Over the dawn Troggs Neck Bridge with no traffic. Dropped off in New Rochelle , got on a train for the last stretch. Home by 8am.

Halloween treats

Just scored 5-9-77 vinyl at a local shop, $125 + tax.
There were 2 copies, another guy was there at the same time and grabbed the other.

Sounds awesome, but the curse of vinyl means that you have to flip the record after Slipknot!

DaP 36 is ‘in transit by post office’, so fingers are crossed that it comes today.
AB50 is also supposed to arrive today.

Good thing clocks turn back tonight, I’ll need that extra hour for listening if in fact all the CD’s show up.
Not sure if I’ll get in the Halloween anniversary listens, I’ve heard them all many times and the new arrivals may have to come first. We’ll see how things play out tonight.

Halloween shows attended. 10/31/83

37 years ago at the Marin Veterans Auditorium, they played the last St.Stephen. I had a lot more fun the night before, 10/30/83, when we all dosed, fun city. My favorite Halloween show is 10/31/69 from San Jose State. I saw the Garcia Band on 10/31/86, the Oakland Auditorium kinda swallowed them up, when you were used to seeing them at Keystone Palo Alto.

1970 & 1980 Halloween

10/31/70 NRPS from Fifty years ago playing as I type this.
Digging these NRPS sets and the story behind these shows.
SBDs recorded by the SUNY sound crew and we get essentially 4 complete shows Early & Late with the NRPS both nights!
That’s killer.
10/30/70 you can tell the band is a bit frustrated with the scene and if you read about what was going on around them that night and in general at this time, it gives cool insight to what you’re hearing.

The student sound guy for one is turning down the mic volume when there’s no singing and then when the singer gets back on the mic, the mics not working. I noticed this a couple of times in Lovelight, which in turn throws off the bands timing. I believe by 10/31 Bob & Pigpen threaten the sound guy, looking forward to that today :)

Well worth a visit for their completeness in a tape desert during this historic period in the GD verse.

10/30 & 10/31/80 - Who watched Shakedown Stream?!?
Some killer info about the story behind the 1980 Radio City & Warfield tapes.
DV - DL gives the skinny on the story of the master tapes in detail (minus the dates of what exists and what doesn’t). You gotta check it out.

From what I was hearing, random reels of those masters were recorded over for Brent Mydland’s solo stuff.. At the time the archival value wasn’t perceived and they essentially saw those tapes as having already been used up in the making of Reckoning & Dead Set. So they'd grab.. say reel 5 of 7 and use it for a new project.
Fascinating and somewhat heartbreaking stuff!

Favorite Halloween shows - 10/31/85 has always been a favorite. (Wow Dennis you were there, I’ve always loved that one since I first heard it BITD) and 10/31/71, 10/31/69.
Shit I like em all! 10/31/83, 10/31/84.

Starting today off mellow with JGB 10-31-87 Early acoustic.

Last night while waiting for Shakedown Scream to start I listened to set 1 of 10-31-91. Saving set 2 for tonight.

Has everyone been to at least one Halloween show :-)

Our group only made one.... 1985-10-31 - Carolina Coliseum USC - Columbia, SC.

I remember the unique sound system arrangement. I remember the place being one level pie shaped and in the back corners they had speakers set up. Bob screaming during Werewolves was piped through these speakers and the sound wrapped around the arena. We gave Music Never Stopped and Tenn Jed a plus 1. LL Rain got a plus 3, listening right now,,, nice recording,,, came from archive.

I remember a huge spray string war at a holiday inn down the street. I remember people changed the sign in front of IHOP to read something like LSD served inside. Can't say I remember how heavy I was tripping, but I know I was!

Halloween Space

I was thinking about some of the best Space Jams the band ever did. I haven't thought about it a whole heck of a lot, but the Brain Fry Space meltdown from 12/2/73 and the Space Jam before Wharf Rat on 7/5/78 are good. Someone was mentioning the Space Jams from October '94 all being good.

Anybody putting a Space Jams soundtrack together for Halloween?

I completely agree.

On occasion and if I'm not careful volume gets the best of me. One day I might live to regret this. Thankfully, that day was not today.

A new one for me. Some sound weirdness especially in and around banter, but what the hey.

I don't know what it is, but I have soft spot for The Eleven, Born Cross-Eyed and especially New Potatoe Caboose. Good show with some vintage grease to end the night with me feeling a little dirtier than I did when I woke up.

If there's no pick for tomorrow, I suggest the next in line. It's a partial, starts with a rare Clementine. 1/20/68 Euraka Municipal Auditorium. I think we should set up a go fund me to find all the missing reels, there's a couple missing from this show. It would be something for them to be found.

4/30/88 at the Frost

Hey Jim, I know you have had a lot on you plate this year. Thanks for checking this one out. Yes, the recording is decent, not great. Like a lot of 88 recordings out there. Still think they have some good ones in the Vault.

I liked the show, anytime I see a Hey Pocky Way, I am in. Nice Shakedown to open the second set. Love the triple Encore with China Rider OMSN.

It is good to get out of the comfort zone once in a while Doc.

Carousel Ballroom 68, okay Jim, Ok will have to que it up this morning.

44 years ago today, there when Roy Buchanan along with Levon and His All Stars opened for the Dead. My last in person show, on the bus since their first album, however things had changed so much.... Doc was there, a wild late summer scene, part of my farewell to Maine.

All is worthwhile if the soul is not small.....

9/6/80 Lewiston

I'm in - hopefully sometime this weekend I can transport my mind and spirit into late summer beautiful day/evening Maine. Sounds like a dream show and setting. Very cool that a couple of you guys got to be there. Didn't realize this was the last show before the Warfield run. Long and heartfelt write up on grateful seconds (he was there). Comment at the end from a guy who was 8 at the time and lived a "bike trail" away from the fairgrounds. Listened to part of the show from his clubhouse. Rode his bike over and snuck in. Totally dug the Drums. Made major bank (for a kid) collecting cans and bottles for deposit afterwards (which is exactly what 8 yr old me would have done.) Think I might travel John Deere with the Jim Wise FOB.

But back this week. I can do Lewiston again.

As I recall there is not a good soundboard that circulates, right? And the one that does is first set only and it sure does sound like an audience (or ultramatrix on steroids at least).

High energy though.. like Gainesville, there must have been something in the water.

You have to wonder if this was recorded and if so where the hell are the master tapes? I think someone (Parrish??) tossed out the language that some of the master reels were left on the seat and when the truck pulled away they must have flown out the window or something.

I'd love to see more reels (and cassettes) returned.

Anyway, Lewiston Me for me tomorrow.

Edit: Started tonight - why not? Gave up on the "soundboard" and settled on the Jim Wise same as Bluecrow. Good news, Bluecrow.. The John Deere Broke down and was sitting in the yard for the last half of the week. I got it working today. Had to replace the solenoid. Damned electronics are always interfering with time travel. Just imagine if this broke back in time before Jebediah Solenoid created the first working model for riding mowers.. we would have been screwed.. I mean, nothing wrong with being stuck in 1980 but why not go back another 10 to 15 years...

High energy is right. Pretty good audience.

Follow-Up

While I was in the neighborhood, I took a quickie with 11/28/80 Lakeland Civic Center - Lakeland, FL (30 Trips).

I figured why not.. most enjoyable, especially To Lay Me Down. Not sure why I like that song so much, but I do.

More 1980

Ah, yes, more 1980. You don't have to twist my arm. A shorter show for the time period, but still really good. Will get it going after I finish up Dicks #36, which was mentioned on some other threads. Such a great show, but apparently didn't sell well at the time. No idea why.

My Favorite Non-Multi-Track 1980 Release

Random Musing - 1980

My favorite non-multi-track 1980 release has got to be Dave's # 8, 11/30/80 Fox Theater. Love how that Matrix worked out. If anyone remembers the seaside chat, he was spot on.

Crowd noise was not as big an issue in 1980 as they could play in some pretty intimate venues. Also, as the age of the cassette master replaced the lovely Ms. Cantor Jackson, a lot of those early soundboards are a bit sterile sounding without the crystalline highs and the booming lows. Blending those early 80's soundboards with one of those near perfect audience masters works. When they aged out of the smaller, cooler venues (thinking after Jerry's coma and In The Dark) audience tapes had to compete with hundreds of the guy next to you screaming "JERRY!!" at 95 decibels, this was no longer possible.

That SBD/Dr. Bob matrix is almost exactly perfect (or as good we are going to get for the time).

On the opposite side of the same coin, I think some of the Ultra Matrix's have a bit too much of the guy yelling JERRY! then I sometimes want to hear. Thinking a lot of 87 suffers from this, and by then the audience tapes were no better.

Anyway, if Mr. Norman can pull of similar wizardry I wish they would do more like DaP#8.
