Some consider Spring 1990 the last great Grateful Dead tour. That it may be. In spite of outside difficulties and downsides, nothing could deter the Grateful Dead from crafting lightness from darkness. They were overwhelmingly triumphant in doing what they came to do, what they did best — forging powerful explorations in music. Yes, it was the music that would propel their legacy further, young fans joining the ranks with veteran Dead Heads, Jerry wondering "where do they keep coming from?" — a sentiment that still rings true today, a sentiment that offers up another opportunity for an exceptional release from a tour that serves as transcendental chapter in the Grateful Dead masterpiece.

Listening back to the Spring '90 tour tapes...

...and I've come to the realization that not a single show from this tour should be limited in edition. ALL are mandatory listening. If people are passing on this because they don't like the era, it's probably best for them to give up on music altogether and focus on other things in life like sports, cars or politics because they obviously don't have an ear and/or an open mind for greatness. Musical/artistic taste is subjective in nature. Some people get it, some don't. I would like to once again express my gratitude for those whose generosity is making this release possible for me to acquire. It's the single coolest thing anybody has ever done for me!

change of heart

OK, so after initial disappointment with another 1972 and general ambivalence about the 1972 release, some of you have talked me into being excited about receiving it. I do love jazzy Dead and the one-drummer era. The Veneta PITB is off the hook, so this one likely will follow suit. I wonder when they will have a page up for this release. Odd that one hasn't shown up yet. I like good debates about eras. Everyone has a right to their opinions. Sometimes the debates get a bit too heated, though. I am still hoping that DaP12 will be something from the 1980s. Sure, they just put out this box set, but at $250+ dollars (with s/h) a lot of folks are passing it. We get a Brent fix with the 3/29/90 show, but 1990 is very different from 1980s-- the MIDI effects and all.

kjohn - that's great! Glad you got onto White Denim (bad name, great band) thin - well said indeed. I don't recall that post from the DaP 10 thread, so I'm glad you re-posted. It is just plain thrilling that there are so many gaps in official releases, even in years that have a lot of releases. It means we can look forward to years of releases, I hope. bolo - too funny. Some of those - like "Pauley's distant relative," are perfect. Who ARE you, man?

As requested, clue recap I - for those who care

This might get long, so I apologize in advance for taking up so much space. Those of you who don't give a rat's behind about this can move on to something more interesting June 21 post Anyway, here's the situation. See, me and my buddy Paulie blew into town, just passin' by ya unnerstand, but we ended up havin' to spend the night on account of our van broke down. So we're hangin' out at the garage when we look across the street and see a lot of them filthy hippie types millin' around, lookin' like they was up to somethin'. Nothin' but trouble, I tells ya. With nothin' left to do at the garage, we decided to go see what all the hubbub was about. Next thing ya' know, some hippie chick throws her arms around Pauley, claiming to be his distant relative or somethin'. He swears he don't know her. But, she has extra tickets to some musical shindig there, so we figure, what the heck, we're stuck here so we might as well go in with her and check it out. Man, what a trip! This guy - I think his name was Gary or Gerry - he was doin' stuff with a guitar like I never heard before. Weird night, man, but fun. Thanks Coconut Phil ... I will try to get over there. I dont' use facebook but its about time I learned ...my whole family is on there. I don't post often but I do usually read most of the threads. I find them very entertaining and am interested in everyone's opinions. Also, I have learned a TON about my favorite band from all of you so thanks for that. Also, got hooked up with Brian hahne here which helped me score a few DP I was needing so that was cool too. Wanted simply to say ... keep the opinions coming you all. That is what makes the forum so interesting. However, please leave the people bashing and name calling at home. This is a GD website ... no one is going to die from what is discussed here. There is other more important stuff to get angry about out there in the world so please chill on this site. That all being said, I agree with others who have posted and think a part of the problem here is that when we all subscribe to DaP in fall, we obviously have no idea what the picks are going to be. So, when some of us are disappointed with a pick, there is anger at spending good money for something we don't want. So, DaP could help the situation by giving at least an idea at what the picks might when we sign up in advance. And who knows, maybe they just don't know what the picks are going to be when we subscribe so they can't give us a clue? I would find this hard to believe. Even a general idea to the effect that there will 4 picks that will come from for example, years 72, 76, 85 and 92 blah blah blah would be helpful. At end of day, no one is forced to subscribe. I did not subscribe the first two years as I didn't like paying up front and having no idea what the picks were going to be. I lost out for 2 years. This is my first yr with DaP and willing to take the chance that there will be some picks I don't like. But since I generally like all dead, it should be ok. Wanted to conclude on a big Thank you to Dave L, rhino and the band and anyone else out there working so hard on these releases. We are VERY FORTUNATE to have so many releases coming out from the DEAD so thank you for this. I will continue to trust in your judgement and will know that not every pick will thrill me but its a chance I take. Keep up the good work. I am out

This is going to be nice. The music will play. I'm happy with this release, I'm sure it will sound awesome. I am surprised that another 1990 was released so soon. Deadheads were talking about the 80's so much that I believed it would be 80's. I'm sure some heads will be disappointed. i'm always glad just to get anything. 24 year old shows will entertaining for sure. I passed on the print, it's nice but just not for me. I bet it sales out in a few weeks at the most, 9000 copies is not really that many. Looking for hints on DP11. Peace

.....need advice

I like the Brandford show.....but I have a copy. As a 70's fan, will I listen to the rest enough to warrant buying this? Need some honest advice from the 80's and 90's guys (or the 70's guys) to help me make up my mind. I'm asking VERY sincerely and NOT trying to start up an ugly war of words! Just want HONEST feedback please. Peace.

I'm a 60s and 70s guy, but I loved the first box set

If you have the first box, I would say that's all you need. With the exception of 3/29/90, the better shows are on there. If you missed the first one, you might want to look into getting this one. The shows are well-played, but lack the power of the 6 from the first box.

Darn it!

Before I met a wonderful woman and got married and had a wonderful child I could have afforded this! I had to pass on the first Spring90 box and have to pass on this one too. The only show I knew I loved on the first box was 3/22, but this has two I love: 3/25 and (of course) 3/29! Sob...I desperately hope that in a year or so GDM will issue the Spring90 shows individually like they did with the E72 shows. I will jump on about half of them! Ooooh I want this!

a whopping € 41, sigh... I guess a completist's gotta do what a completist's gotta do, even if it means skipping eating out for a month. Anyway, apart from the 3/29 Marsalis set there is enough to savour. It may not be the years Spacebrother wants released, but at least the later years are not ignored. @Thursday's child: I'm basically a pre-hiatus fan, but especially if you missed out on 1990/the first one, you'll need this. Great playing, Brent & Jerry in top shape, some nice rearrangements (Death don't have no mercy, Loose Lucy) and, as far as I'm concerned, nice warm sound. It works whether you play it loudly or just as background music. Now for some October/November 72 or some 67 or some 70?

Comes to $30 per show....

....price is right. I'm probably on board. I too enjoy the Drumz/Space from this era....

Just purchase the 3/29 show by itself. Save the remainder of your money or pick up a few road trip shows from the 70s. Easy decision.

My sincere appreciation to TPTB for releasing the Branford show on it's own. The box looks fantastic but with a wife and two busy teenagers I just can't afford the big bucks on a 1990 release. I would LOVE to buy a couple of these shows a la carte, much the way the Europe '72 shows have been offered.Personally, I'd like to see more boxes in the $100 range but that's not meant to be a complaint, just input. There's a ton of great music in this box and cheers to those of you placing your orders; I'm getting a bit of a vicarious thrill knowing how much you will all enjoy it!

It's not Spring 1976?

I think on this one the quality of the recordings made this the reason for the box. I would much rather see a lot of other spring tours (such as 76) but the recording quality and vault availability are probably challenges. If you love this era, then congratulations and enjoy! I got the first box (no regrets) but I'd be lying if I said it gets a lot of rotation on my IPOD.

We were making DATs and Minidisc not T6 on this tour. Of course I will order and continue to wonder why Barton Hall is held Ransom when things go out at about $270,000 for the remaster and boxing per show. Anyways back to work on West High 6/21.

I love all Dead eras, with my favorite probably being the pre-hiatus time along with '77.But I could not pull the trigger on this fast enough! I loved the first '90 box and I am sure I will love this one also. To me, this is the last great tour and I cannot have too much of that. Order soon as it will disappear quickly I suspect. Rock on

Just what we need: another over-packaged behemoth. Seriously kids, just give us the music at a lower price and we'd still be happy. Does anybody really spend time fondling their "replica ticket stubs and backstage passes" while listening to 'Loser' from 3/24/90? (And I don't want to know if you do ...). I picked up the first one and truth be told, ditched the actual box once the discs found their new home on my shelf. As for the ephemera, it's out there . . . somewhere.

Another 90 Box?!?! How long did the the 1st 90 Box sell out in?

While Spring 1990 is great GD, I think that the GD legacy would be better served by a box set from an altogether different time period. Having said that, I'll still enjoy it. How long did it take the first Spring 90 box to sell out in? $$$ are tight at the moment.
