    Reflections on a Tour
Well, the Spring Tour 2009 is in the bag and was definitely one for the books! That's for sure. I know a lot of people might think the Dead are dead without certain members, and to be honest, the last couple of tours the Dead have done were great experiences for me, but I always felt like people were "sitting in" to fill some big shoes left behind. Even Warren, in 2004, felt like he was filling in. So I went to the LA Forum show expecting what we got in 04. Oh how wrong I was! That first throat grabbing chord of the show was like the band was saying to everyone in the Forum, "Listen up people! We're not f*#cking around here, we're here to play so let's get down to it!" And then BOOM, right into that unreal VLB groove, with a beat that you just had to move to. I have been doing tours since the late 70's/early 80's and to my ears, this band has never been better. On the one hand, they're tighter, yet they're also looser. I cant explain it, and honestly, that's about the best one can say about the Dead when they're really "on", "well, I cant explain it man, you just have to experience it..." ;) I've been keeping up with the Tour, listening to the shows online as the Tour progressed and the first half was just okay for me. But in LA it felt like something happened that night and everything the boys had been striving for just all fell into place that night. The Forum felt like an old school East Coast indoor arena show, complete with rabid, hardcore heads that were so grateful to be back at the party again. This was not a "best of" tour. This was a "here's who we are now, dig it" tour, and man did I love what I heard on the West Coast leg of this Tour. That night in LA, I realized that Warren and Jeff no longer felt like they were filling in for anyone anymore. The *were* the Dead just as much as Bobby, Phil, Billy or Mickey are. To me, the Dead has always been a band in flux. There have been so many iterations of them I've sort of lost count. So to those who lament a Jerryless Dead, all I can say is, you don't know what you're missing. Sure I miss Jerry and I miss Brent. But the Dead as they are right now? Sound the best I've ever heard them and they're not stale, they're still out there pushing the envelope and really, isn't that what this is all about? So yeah, I no longer get weepy when I hear Brokedown Palace or Ripple or Box of Rain. I just revel in the fact that I get to experience this amazing thing we call The Dead, once again. And I am truly Grateful. One final comment...It felt so great to experience Shakedown once again and the lot scenes in LA and the Gorge were excellent. Like some upthread said, I found my self also saying things, and using expressions that I haven't used in a long time...It felt good to have the tribe back together again, didn't it?!

My sentiments exactly. It was a bittersweet night. Very cool to stay up until 3 am+ listening to the whole show, with great interviews and commentary thrown in during the set break. But it was so great to back out there catching 4 shows, eagerly anticipating seeing the setlists of the shows I didn't catch each morning, listening to the downloads etc. I'm going to miss all that. I'm firmly in the camp that thinks the music has changed/evolved in a great way....new sounds, tunes I never thought I'd get to hear live, Rhythm Devils taking it to new heights each night etc etc. Warren and Jeff are as good as it gets in the post Jerry/Brent/Keith/Pigpen era, which is to say they're both amazing musicians who fit right into the fabric of the band and helped to make the magic each night. Jeff is a monster on the keys and Warren managed to channel the ghosts of Jerry/Brent/Pigpen in his paying and singing while keeping it new and fresh and his own as well. Branford's interview during the set break was spot on: they're older, they've each gone on to do new things are are coming at playing together from a new angle, pushing the boundaries and not just treading the worn path. By the time they got to the Gorge, they seem to have all completely melded musically and got the bugs all worked out. We may not see them out on the road two thirds of the year anymore....at least as The Dead, but I gotta think the fun they seemed to be having along with the embrace of the fans will pull them back for another go around or two down the road. And yes, it was really cool to hear Mickey thank the crew and bring them out onstage for some well deserved applause. I've seen them with Jerry from the early 80's onward, seen Phil and his band, Ratdog, the Dead 2003/4 and I can say I had as good a time at these shows and I've had at any. All different, all excellent and all the music of the Grateful Dead which is what it's all about. Thanks guys!

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum to use but I'm sure Marye will let me know. I just went to the GDTS TOO website for the first time in years to see about Ratdog tix and was amazed at what i found. It prompted me to send them the following... Please don't take offense. Just a little constructive criticism. It's been many years since I've visited your site. Back in the day I thought it was the greatest thing ever. The days of calling the hotline every day sometimes multiple times were over, but come on guy's, your site is really quite primitive by today's standards. To my dismay, when I tried to fill out the credit card form I discovered it wasn't interactive. I consider myself a caveman for not having a printer/copier/scanner combo, but times are tough. I don't even know where to find a fax machine. Aren't we supposed to be a paperless society by now? This planet needs all the trees she can produce. The decorative envelopes are still very cool, and should be an option, but how about an online interactive version of the envelope? I'm sure there are thousands of heads out there into web design who would be willing to collaborate and put something together for you. I'm not a designer myself but I'm willing to help wherever I can. Just something to consider. Peace and much thanks for all you do. So this would be a shout out to all of you webmasters out there if they are receptive. I know youre out there, a simple Google search for anything Dead related shows me there's some mad skills out there. I have not recieved a response yet, but when I do I'll post it.

thor369 - I'm still waiting for my two Chicago show downloads that were ordered May 3rd! Hope your wife is better. she is doing much better. it was an asthma and panic attack type combo, scary stuff. my CD isnt a download, it was a CD i paid for, at the show, they was recording off the mixing boards, and pressing official show CD's on the spot for $25, with show date, and place, on official The Dead CDs. it is why i dont want the download to replace my CD, my puter dont have good speakers, and i only listen to my CDs in my car, or my headset CD player. i cant reburn 1 on my puter, and it isnt the official CD with the printed faces on them.

Chicago was incredible... 20 years since since my love's and mine last show but with one more in tow - our 11 year old son whose favorite song right now is Throwing Stones. All with a different yet better spirit. The magic was back. It does remind me of reading a book where you don't understand the words and you go back later and understand it even more after life experience. I started reading the book long ago and loved it - and It means even more now. The shows brought smiles, healing and joy. Peace Mike P.S. Please Tour again !!!! - You are beautiful together ! Such a long long time to be gone and a short time to be there

Everyone stops the bullshit about this that the other ones and remember what's it about. The Music! Does anyone remember the music? The way it made you feel the first time you heard it? Maybe it was China Cat or Estimated Prophet? All of a sudden, out of nowhere, you need to get up and dance. And then, everybody's dancing. The music is what draws us in together. The music is what brings the band together. Not everyone gets the Dead. We get it. The music will never stop. I'm sure everyone has a song that they have enjoyed over the years with someone dear to them that is no longer with us. Be thankful that you get the chance to be here at this time to enjoy life with new people, new dreams and new hope. Hey that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. The stars were spinning dizzy, But the band kept us so busy We forgot about the time. "Oh if a man tried To take his time on earth And prove before he died What one man's life could be worth I wonder what would happen To this world."

"Well it sounded so sweet. I had to take me a chance,I rose out of me seat, Lord I had to dance, Started moving my feet, and clapping my hands." Going 'round and 'round... The Grateful Dead were a dance band. The Music man! Well said.

Reading through this, this does not surprise me. Just got an email from Sugarmegs.org (i've been working alot throughout all of this) and they said ALL the Mail orders have been fulfilled, except for a few (1 out of 3 ain't bad for Shoreline) and this is all just wrong. I used to mail order everytime for shows, only got shut out once. Needless to say, I suspected that Ticket Bastard and others did this for along time before this. NOW I KNOW. "It's a sign of the times", people say. "It's all about the Benjamins", others do. But really? I don't blame the band at all. They are just musicians that are the best in the world....think of how many bands they've influenced, why so much GREED? So wrong. Thank God I got my tickets to Chicago. I'm skeptical about getting any for Shoreline. Most of my headicated friends from home (Bay Area) had to work at the time of the presale too, except for the mail orders, and "tried" to buy tickets through Ticket Bastard to no evail. I'm so excited to see these shows, I've been dancin and singing all over town. Yet, this really pisses me off. Thank you to all on this forum for letting me know that at the very least, WE all still have our original values. There are some really good people in this community, so let's just stay true to each other, and say FUCK the money monger bastards! I can't wait to see the boys in full swing, making me feel like I'm home again. Blowing my mind, and melting my innards. Thank you Billy, Bobby, Phil, Mickey, Warren, and Jeff for letting me know you are NOT apart of this rape! ____________________________________________________ Will you come with me? Am I reading correctly or incorrectly that it sounds like Ticketmaster sold, "allotted" or whatever, huge blocks of tickets to their sister company TicketNow? But isn't scalpers BEFORE public ass-backwards? Setting the public up for higher priced tix, from the get-go? Like "if you wanna see this show, bow down and beg, and pay out the nose"?Simple business calculations would seem to indicate that every party involved in selling these tickets earns their percentage on them, making the end price higer, after every extra agency they go through. ********************************** It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine

February 1st, 1960 marks the 49th anniversary of the fateful day four brave black students sat down at a segregated lunch counter in a woolworth's store in Greensboro and made history. The counter's chairs and stools were for whites only, while blacks had to stand to eat. The four were refused service, but were allowed to stay. The next day, 28 students joined the sit-in, and the next there were 300 more. About 5 months later, 3 major stores changed there policies to allow intergrated counters. 4 yrs later the civil rights act was signed by LBJ.How cool is that? I remember the day when hippies, long hairs and dead heads were treated the same way. Like once in a restaurant in Ohio in l969 when we were refused service due to our appearance. Thank the stars for people like these students and dead heads everywhere for standing up for what you believe in. "We will survive"

State websites usualy list where their rest area's are. Find one close and crash there, thats what im doing. Look up truck stops too, they have shower rooms you can use also for like $6-$8 if your the type that needs a shower. You can look up car pool lots also, there's many places to crash. Just dont get so tanked you cant make it, nothing spoils a tour like having to deal with the law.

I guarantee you can't camp in Chicago as well. I'll bet the parking lot scene will be sketchy to say the least. Maybe for a few hours before the show....personally I don't even drive downtown to see shows, train it from one of the many places in the 'burbs you can spend the night in your car. All great suggestions so far, if you need to park somewhere close, I recommend parking near Giordano's at Van Buren and Halsted...or just south near the Italian row of restuarants. We'll be heading away from the venue before the show for the whole day before, then heading down about 2 hours before the doors open. PM me if you need anymore info. ____________________________________________________ Will you come with me? I keep seeing people saying they can't get Shoreline tickets on Ticketmaster without being redirected to Tickets Now. That's because Shoreline tickets are sold at livenation.com. Lawn tickets are still available. Maybe you can even still get lucky and pull reserved. I got section 203, row U. Crossing my fingers for mail order. If my husband is a lucky 1 in 3, we'll have a couple of reserved for sale at our cost. SCALPERS SUCK!

I will be traveling East from Denver for 6 shows; Buffalo, Wilkes Barre, Uniondale, MSG, Hartford, and East Rutherford. Any local places to gather before the shows or are people just going to be in the arena parking lots? Also, any local campgrounds or local tips where I can "Rest my bones" at the end of the night? I did figure out that I can take the "E-Train" from Queens the day after the Nassau Coliseum show and it will take me to the MSG show (Penn Station). Leaving my vehicle near Nassau instead of driving into Manhattan. Any other tips?

rosa rugosa I wish you well, and I really love your analogy of Jerry being gone from the band being akin to losing your Mom from the family. It can even make you cherish your remaining family even more! I thought that you summed it up perfectly. I missed Jerry, but I can't travel back in time to see him, so I'm just really grateful that I didn't miss the boat completely and will get to see the rest of the band in April (both Worc shows, can hardly wait!)

Tell me friend, have you noticed of late, how only the strange remain? It's actually been a trip lately picking through my old cassestes (they still work -- aftter all these years!) and hearing some really great audience tapes. You ever checked a really good copy of an audience tape vs. DPs for Salt Palace 73? The Other One is truly awesome. Phil's intro is captured very well in the DP version, but the tape I have really NAILS Jerry's jamming later in the song, along with Bobby & Phil. A tip of the hat this morning to all those tapers out there over the years who made it possible! BOYCOTT THE NITROUS MAFIA THIS TOUR! JUST SAY NO TO HIPPY CRACK!

I have searched this site and the GDSSTOO(or whatever it is) site and cannot find any info on status of mail order. A friend of mine sent me a bulletin(from where I don't know) about the status of mail order. I just wanted to double check with the source to see if it was true that we were getting all the tix we ordered! WOOT WOOT Can someone point me in that direction? I am getting a little let down on how hard it is to find out some info on shows lately. What is all the secrecy about? I signed up MONTHS ago and then again when the word came out about tour for the email alert. Well, I got ONE email the DAY before mail order went down and NO word about online ticketing. Had to find that out thru friends but its all good. Then on the day of mail order AND online tix sales, I get a message on email at 2:30 that tix are sale online. Several hours too late in my opinion! lol So is there any news on the status of mail order? Please someone help! lol Hope that everyone got the tix they wanted and don't support scalpers!

Looks like MSG, Spectrum & Shoreline were the only shows to sell out completely. What percentage of those tickets went to scalpers is unknown. Seems like states that have strong laws against scalping (Ma. Ct. etc.) were on sale easily. Others got directed to resale sites. Tickets were available from alternate sources, but sailed under radar until those in the know had theirs (typical). Mail order sure looked like the way to go, many thanks go out to those still running that operation. As I suspected, every other venue still has tickets for sale at the sale price (plus the vig). There will be shows that never sell out entirely. That was predictable. All things considered, it is shaping up to be a very comfortable tour for the dedicated. Shakedown St. should be fully operational at most venues. Ten mile skid on a nine mile drive.

Hoping for tickets to Shoreline. Had my bookmarks set. I log in. Takes a bit but I am in. I sit and fiddle...kinda hung over. I click on "more info", since the tickets aint offered yet. IT LOGS ME OUT!ARGGGGG!! What have I done??? (Spoiler, this gets a bit graphic, reader discretion advised.) I been on two kinds of anti-biotics for a few days... and was drinking the night before...know what a "shart" is? I run to the bathroom... (lmao) Clean myself up as best I can... 8:59AM I am back... not logged in. I sit and watch the little blue line crawl as I berate myself for ever clicking on "more info". I further wish I hadn't gotten drunk the night before... so anyhow, I say a prayer and switch to 64bit Internet Explorer. I get in! SMILING NOW..... till nothing happens.... watching the blue line crawl....OH NOW WHAT? 9:10-9:26AM I am supposed to score tickets for my brother and his wife too. 9:27AM success!!! Fast forward to the present... I testify that my prayer to God in His Son's name..Jesus was answered. Lesson from all this? Faith is rewarded and its a shitty job but someone has to be me!!!

Did anyone else fail to receive an e-mail alert from Dead.net? I just found out now that tickets for the Chicago show went on sale this past weekend, and I am seriously bummed.

This has to be a bad joke. $100 for a ticket? What the hell happened to the spirit of the 60's? Looks like the Dead has turned into another version of the Stones, the Who, the Eagles, etc. It's really too bad. I didn't think it would happen to them.

I just bought four tickets each to two Yankees games for this summer. I paid $960!!! For two freakin baseball games. The Yankees play 81 home games each year. No guarantee they will win. No guarantee it will even be a good game. Paying $100 to see a rare event like the Boys gettin back together, and experiencing the music we all love seems like a bargain to me. If anything they should add another show at Shoreline. "Everybody's braggin' and drinking that wine, I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines. Come to daddy on an inside straight, well I've got no chance of losing this time"

Everyones complainin about ticket prices. Heres somthin else for us on the left coast to piss and moan about. Just did some quick math. To do the entire east coast leg, total drive distance is aprox 2800mi. Total shows=16. West coast aprox 1400mi. Total shows=3. 5x the shows for 2x the driving. Plus youre still payin .25 less per gallon back there. Cmon guys, wheres the love????? What about Vegas, Monterey, Sac, Eugene, Portland. "One way or another, this darkness got to give"

Shipped OrdersBy choosing UPS 2nd Day Air or UPS Worldwide Express, it does NOT necessarily mean that your tickets will arrive two days after processing your order. Tickets will be shipped approximately two weeks before the event date; however they might be shipped earlier. If you have not received your tickets within one week of the event date, please email deadtickets@musicotoday.com immediately and we will happily assist you. Shipped orders cannot be delivered to PO Box addresses. Entering a PO Box address may cause a delay in delivering your tickets and/or extra shipping charges. If any shipped orders are re-routed after they have been sent, there is an additional fee. "Everybody's braggin' and drinking that wine, I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines. No kidding - just in the distance from LA to Shoreline (about 350 miles) you could see 8 shows on the east coast (the Wilkes-Barre to Philly stretch) in almost the same distance (about 525 miles). I have read where people are trying to get into MSG but Long Island the night before is only 30 miles away with tickets to spare. Man if I lived out there I would hit all 8 of those shows without thinking twice about it! "Everybody's braggin' and drinking that wine, I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines. why does the dead still use Ticketmaster im complaining because we got 3 of the worst tickets i have ever gotten for the the Gd,the dead, the other ones, and back to the dead.. and then you go on tickets now, and stub hub, and e-bay, and craigslist, and there are hundreds of tickets good seats available through scalpers.. i mean come on half of these tickets will not even sell they will have to eat them... its such a waste and unfair to a true fan...i pretty sure all these companies and websites are sleeping with Ticketmaster because does one get so many good tickets and a true fan cant get one good one... its a joke....

The real outrage is that Ticketsheister actually owns at least one of these "premium" sites. Obviously they funnel the best seats directly to their own site and never even make them available to the public. I don't know, but it seems illegal to me, or at least fraudulent. I wish someone from the Band would address these concerns, but I don't think they really even care. "Let there be songs to fill the air."

Stub Hub has 1525 but Tickets Now is gaining fast with 1078. So sad. GDTSTOO does a great job and the bad guys still win. Anyone have ideas? Come on Mail Order. Take care all.
