"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

*Helpful hints for using your USB:

Running the 30 Trips Player / Reader program:
On Windows – Navigate to the USB drive and double click the PCStart.exe file to run.
On MacOS – Open the GD 30 Trips drive, and double click the MacStart to run.

    Viewing the digital book:
You can either view it within the program that comes on the drive, or by opening the PDF directly.

To view the PDF, open the PDF folder on the drive and the USB_bk_spreads_08-31 file within. Selecting the option within your PDF reading application to view as a “single page” might be preferable to viewing as a continuous document.

Importing music into iTunes and other library programs:
When you import the songs from the USB into your library, the information used to identify the track will likely leave them sorted incorrectly. Please use the song list found here to re-number the songs for each show so that they playback in the correct order.

    Set Lists...
I couldn't help but think that a couple of these set lists would have really pissed off some folks here. I went Friday and loved it, and couldn't believe how much of Blues For Allah they played. No disappointments for me, and Ripple is my favorite song on the planet, so to hear it semi-acoustic for the first time since Radio City was truly special. Seems like there have been two shows out of four where they haven't ventured beyond '78 in their set list, with night 1 in Santa Clara being the most focused on early stuff. I'm going with my wife tonight and looking forward to another memorable show. I thought about my Friday show all day Saturday. I can't remember the last time that happened after a concert. I would think there would be no guests based on the first 4 shows, except for Bolo's contest. I think it would be cool if the opened with Tomorrow Is Forever, sung by special guest Donna Jean Godchaux. But I don't get to officially guess, since I am already basking in the glow of my recent Bolo Contest. Have fun tonight. I'd be very surprised if the set list was as "mundane" as last night. Either way, I am sure there will be tears shed.

Man, I sure wish I could make a show this weekend. The universe worked completely against me starting from before the mail order, Ticketmaster on sale date and a number of other attempts to score a ticket for any show. I watched the PPV on Friday and it has only made me wish I was there all that much more. Damn I live close to Chicago and got totally shut out from a once in a lifetime experience. ;( A lot of it is nostalgia, but, when it's done, it's done, and all that will be left will be the memories. I'm lucky that I got to see them as often as I did when Jerry was alive and am Grateful for that. Admittedly, it's going to be tough to not sulk for a while though for missing out on this weekend (I tried)... ...unless they decide to say "fuck it, we're not ready to retire yet". Wishful thinking....sigh...

Yes, no chatter about guests. In typical fashion, I missed the time for the Bolo contest (significantly). So in the five min or so it took to think up some names and check their tour schedules, I realized every fucking body (except me) is in Chicago right now. Melvin Seals, David Grisman, David Nelson, Mahatma Gandhi, Elvis, Roy Orbison, Janice, Jimi (I can do this all night.).. So I frantically put five names down, quick, and hit send, quick. Only after I hit send did I began to give it some serious attention, but surly in jest.. I am no better at solving Bolo clues than I at double Jeopardy. one edit: for me, Jorma would be a welcomed guest. He did a masterful job on Sugaree at the Dear Jerry show, really special. Plus, did anyone else besides me pick up on what a beautiful new guitar he was sporting? A magnificent instrument. By the way, what about Phil's (new to me) bass? Another spectacular instrument, real art and I'm happy to see these guys use them.

I think Bob Dylan is touring Europe right now so he seems to be doubtful for tomorrow night. Funny that there's been no chatter about Bolo's latest contest. My first thought was that the best guess would be no guests at all since that might somehow take away from the "core four" who are already sharing the spotlight with Trey and Bruce (and Chementi). But I was/am really hoping for an appearance by Donna Jean; and David Nelson seemed to be a natural fit since NRPS is in Chicago. If he wasn't invited to play on Ripple or FOTD it seems doubtful he'll be there tomorrow.Since so many people made the same guess at the very first minute in the last contest I decided to go out on a limb with a far out guess: Keith Richards. The Stones were in Indy on the 4th so maybe he'll stop by for a Satisfaction encore or first set closer. Actually, that sounds beyond ridiculous. What was I thinking?

Can someone post the setlist or a link for tonight's show? Any thoughts or reviews? A while back I posted about telling my cousin about purchasing the new box and how I was a bit embarrassed to tell him how much it cost. He called me this morning and said he couldn't resist yesterday and spent almost $800 on two tickets for him and his girlfriend last night. He was pumped about the show and that almost inspired me to buy the PPV. But the only option on Comcast seemed to be $40--I've got plenty of video that I virtually never watch so pulled out Crimson White and Indigo and watched that instead. Pretty kick ass show and Phil is on. Maybe I'll spend the money tomorrow night...

Geez, what's with the spate of hate for vinyl? Surely it takes more effort than the follow-on options, and I concede that it's subjective, but I'd invite anyone to come to my place and do a side-by-side comparison between vinyl, CD and whatever else. To me, there's no comparison and I'm willing to invest the time and money (and get up and flip the album every 18 or so minutes) if I'm in the mood for serious listening. That said, I also have a CD player and a few 160GB iPODs with uncompressed music. There's room for everything in audio-land, folks. No need to disparage old technology just 'cause it's old. To my old ears, vinyl is - and will likely always be - the best (you should hear the MSFL mono set of Beatles records I have!)

floridabobaloo, I have one of those Apple shaped Beatles USB's. Really amazing sound - I play it in the car and you can hear things you have never heard before on songs you have heard thousands of times. Only two problems with the USB: The Apple "Stem" is attached to the USB portion and a lot of people have lost theirs over the years - you have to be very gentle with it - that won't be a problem with the 30 Trips USB. The other problem is the White Album - since it is two records, each with an "A" side and a "B" side (no "C" or "D" side) you wind up with two songs as song 1, two songs as song 2, two songs as song 3, etc.when you load it on to a hard drive it truly corrupts the running order of the LP. I re-numbered everything and thought I had it right but when I went to play the album it reverted back to the two songs as 1, two songs as 2,.....Apparently I have neither the talent or authority to fix it. So my hard drive, which I play a lot more to avoid damage to the "Stem", goes: "Back in the USSR", "Birthday", "Dear Prudence", "Yer Blues",.....

Automaticslim, You have to use an MP3 tag editor to fix this. iTunes has one built in, you right click the song and click get info and it takes you to the screen where you can edit the metadata. I have seen your issue before, the problem is that MP3s have a "track number" and "disc number" field. It sounds like the track number is being used but not the disc number so it should just be a matter if going in and populating the disc number properly. I have had a lot of experience with this given all of the 3 disc dead releases. Final note is that a lot of players use the metadata (i.e. track number) and not the file name when sorting your songs for playback. This is why simply renumbering the files has no effect, it still sees 2 track 1s and without the disc number to further sort by it just plays them consecutively. Hope this helps.

so are they shipping today?? I know they're not but it would be nice if they did...I heard they have used tracking of a cd in the past via the net I remember a neil diamond title had that I know a lot of you are laughing but he must've been afraid of teenagers uploading and downloading his cd for free once someone else bought one...far as this box set goes I can see someone burning someone else a copy and what can you say...700$ a pop is for the rich or the very very loyal grateful dead fan who are willing to give blood work extra shifts and work 2nd and 3rd jobs for awhile...I see it this way for the people who are worried this is a limited edition and they have or will sell it out...life is limited we will not be here forever so don't worry about such things...when I get my box set no one will know about it I will keep it secret if someone knew what kind of a collector you are odds someone will break in and rob you.

Some of the very people who were accused of being "Capitalist Stooges," happen to be the same people who PM'd me when I erroneously gave the impression I wasn't getting the Box. Their offers were universally kind and generous, and completely unprofitable to themselves - in the sense of capital. None of the "Communists" sent me any such messages. Thought it was worth mentioning.

Excellent article :) I'm not anti Vinyl, I have many thousands of records in storage, along with the analog system to play them. Records are a ritual I no longer have the time or space to enjoy. I like to listen to music in more than the 20 minute chunks allowed by lps. My post was that 10 years ago I read an article in a newspaper, the Wall St Journal, that interviewed a label big wig that stated it was their, the labels, intention to phase out CDs as a distribution media because they were the only method that allowed for an exact copy, which he called a "bootleg". It was the quote that stuck in my mind all these years. "Anyone with a PC has a bootlegging machine, no one has a record press in their basements". I found this strange as at the time, records were found at yard sales and flea markets, in collectors magazines or on the internet, but they were no longer being sold in stores and the old record shops were now Used CD stores. It seemed far fetched, but totally logical from a corporate point of view. That was when I started buying CDs the day they came out as I wanted a master I could make an exact copy from for my HD that I listen from. Now we have Vinyl as the hip the audiophile choice and CDs are closer to saved MP3s than the true audiophile releases they promised when they got everyone to buy the remasters on CDs of the records they already owned. Soon everything will be digital distribution and the players will no longer need to support non purchased files, because you can play your record on the record player. Again great article link, that has nothing to do with what I was talking about.

I can tell mine hit, but i won't be able to completely confirm until tomorrow after today's bank closing of the day's books and posting to the accounts. Of course, some might be able to go online and see it, but I do not handle bank transactions online. Hope this helps, G

Glad I was able to help with that moment. That caution sounded pretty tight - and it was extra special because I heard it on Pig's bday. Also, I have both the Beatles USB & Queen USB (you probably never heard about that one). - and they both sound awesome. I agree, you should duplicate the USB content because you never know what could happen. BUT, as for them being infected, that is always out there. Try to keep the chip safe. Beatles USB http://www.amazon.com/The-Beatles-USB/dp/B002VH7P4O Queen USB http://www.amazon.com/The-Orb-Queen/dp/B005P4HK22 It's a great model, but there is risk with everything. Some people who got the Spring Box Too set complained about some CDs not working. It can happen anywhere. Rock on!

I was hoping the scroll would be lickable. As far as charging, banks/cc - as everything else, different businesses do it differently. My bank receives the charge today (on a cc), so I can tell it is there, but until they close their books at close of business, it is more like a hold. Some banks may not show you that interim step and instead just show the charge at one time after the close of the business day. They were to charge today, technically it would not show until tomorrow unless it was done as a debit. If it is a cc or a debit card run as a cc it will show after the close of business. Hope that helps, again, different banks operate differently. Don't mean to add to the confusion. edit1: i definitely would not freak out at all if you have an order number. Remeber, all of this has to flow thru the federal reserve system's clearing house.

great article on headphones and the next thing to getcha! When I was in graduate school, we had the President of the marketing company that handled Debeers Diamonds. He gave us a great speech about marketing and the Debeers monopoly on the african diamond mines. Not to offend the ladies, but what he basically said was that the marketing program was designed to get people to pay a lot of money for a rock. They had to create an image of rareness or exclusivity. When I was home at Thanksgiving I had this sort of conversation and the ladies at the table made the comment that I just did not understand love. As far as the headphones, or better amp, or speakers, or whatever, there is also some basic science involved. I was trying to get a car started one time and I couldn't, A friend asked if it had gas. Then, would it turn over, etc. on and on. The science I speak of is the natural progression or the "path." The path is something I struggle getting my elderly parents to understand when they cannot get their dvd player to play a movie. There is a natural progression of problem solving. First, is it this or that. Second is it this? With amps, headphones, speakers, etc. the wellhead of the path is its source. People on here seem to not realize this and think, why can't they get Keith more into the mix. Most of these tapes are board tapes. That is the source, that is where the path starts. You can only improve an old board tape so much. You cannot go back and remix the actual audio, you can make minor modifications in frequency ranges but that does not change the underlying source. Again ladies no offense, but guys if you can get by with a shiny cubit zerconium, why not? Why pay Debeers for their fluffed up imagery. Yeah, I know, I do not know anything about love.

I too am disappointed with the delay. On the flip side though, they only have one chance to get it right. I would much rather have them take the time needed, than to hurry a box and deliver it with mistakes. And so begins a new countdown...

Yea I'm bummed. I also think it has something to do with the USB delay. Maybe so many people bailed on the USB, when they annouced that delay, the PTB had to hold the release because of folks electing for a pirated copy. Another month would give them time to get those sales back. I don't know for sure but whatever it is stinks. I hate to be harsh about this but I think Rhino does owe us SOMETHING for this.Maybe a discount promo code for a future purchase. I was getting pretty excited.

Better to get it right. I'm not going to let this ruin my day. There's enough to listen too in the mean time.

...is not a release date. It sounds more like "shipping whenever the fuct we get around to it". But certainly not when we promised. I guess our boxes were in a warehouse in Tianjin that doesn't exist anymore.

I think it is safe to say that we have been more than understanding regarding this release and this delay is completely unacceptable. Who else out there spends 700 dollars, yes 700 dollars, on a product they haven't even seen. I know that I am not the only one who has emailed Dave regarding this release with no response. This announcement doesn't deserve one of those WIND videos explaining what is going on? Really? Just talk to us and fill us in. Of course it won't happen because we are all drones that shell out our money anytime Rihno even thinks about maybe releasing something Dead related, but the best response to this silence would be to have everyone cancel there orders and wait for them to prove this product. To anyone who doesn't love this band looking in from the outside this whole situation must seem completely absurd............BECAUSE it is. Shame on us for allowing it.

I'm ok with the delay. Not happy, but I would rather have a product that is exactly perfect. However, why charge on 9/17 and not 10/17? That's the only thing that upsets me. What charge me a month in advance? Also, I bet the music provided online is streaming, not downloaded. Big difference. I can't listen to this in the truck....

What a horrible disappointment and amateurish display of piss poor planning . Why is there such a shortage these days of anyone who can do anything right the first time ? I find it incredibly difficult to put any kind of positive spin on this , just abysmal customer service and lack of respect for a loyal fan base . We are everywhere? Yup , and we are all fools for accepting this treatment as normal ... PS- John Mayer can go suck a friggin egg
