"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

I reviewed my LMA MP3 derived set of the complete Dead sets from 5/15/70 and can't find the Pigpen rant I have been angry about GDM removing during the Road Trips editing! I must have imagined it years before. It was so firmly entrenched in my mind that I never discovered it WASN'T THERE until you're disbelief made me check in with reality! Well, I am still right and accurate with any other comments I make. Everyone forget about this regrettable incident. My credibility is totally blown... Got a lot of hateful thoughts towards GDM to make up for. Maybe buying this box will balance the scales? There's a $700 see-saw rocking in my head, me on one seat, my wife and baby on the other. When will the see-saw settle to one side? Which side will it be?

....some fans have stated there is nothing "new" in this box. My opinion is as thus. If I haven't heard it yet, then any given show is "new" to me, and that's all that counts....this box is for me, not anybody else. Don't mean to sound presumptuous, but that's my take. Do with it what you will. ....as far as packaging, this release is gonna be pretty big and heavy. I fear the discs might be packaged ala Road Trips style. I hope I'm wrong....

Lot of Money -- Not really "new"
IMHO -- -- This box set strikes me as a pretty opportunistic venture by GDM. Talk about "sticker shock." Wow. And, after 36 editions of Dicks Picks, another 12(?) of Dave's Picks, the "So Glad You Made It," and "May '77" box sets, not to mention "Road Trips" and various exceptional -- and some not so hot -- single disk releases, I couldn't honestly even think about plowing more $$$ into another "epic" box release. I'm a deadhead, and I can find reasons to appreciate even some of the "lamer" shows and tours, but I can't see plunking down so much mooola for stuff that, basically, has been duplicated many times on other GD releases. Do I really need another '77 show? Or another '84 show? '93? No.

Yep it's happened again…it seems there's always someone who gets a set with a missing disc…this time it's me.I'm missing disc 2 of the 1975 set. Who else should I contact? I already contacted customer service but she didn't seem very interested in helping. Who else can I notify Deadland? Can someone tell me how to contact Dr. Rhino or Marye?

New edition also has a dust jacket and is the same size as the previous edition. This is basically a reprint of the 2005 edition--same Forward,Preface, Introduction, Afterword and same illustrations. This just a reprint with a new cover touting the 50th anniversary of the band--similar to the recent reprint of the soft cover edition of "Grateful Dead The Illustrated Trip" which has a gold 50th Anniversary stamp on the cover. For those who want a new cover illustration only I suppose. Hope this helps. Any other questions just post and I'll get to it soon. Cheers.

Package finally arrived in Brunswick, Maine at 3:30 today. I feel a sick day coming on for tomorrow and perhaps the rest of the week!! No miracle, but hell, this awesome music to enjoy for weeks to come is the real miracle. Looking forward to hearing the shows from Maine-did not make either show.

In the tragicomedy that is my wait for 30T, the UPS driver again mocked me today by speeding past just as I arrived home from work. His timing has been impeccable the past few days. Also, I'm loving hearing from so many of the normally-silent majority on the joys of receiving and listening to the big box. Keep those cards and letters coming.

Did you happen to see my post regarding this show? I'm asking because you might be able to shed some light on it for me. I've already sent an email to vault.com. In any case it would appear (at least to Deadbase50) that the front half ('Viola' to 'Schoolgirl') is from 11/10/67 while the back half ('That's It For The Other One' to 'Caution') is from 11/11/67. Check your Deadbase if you have one and let me know your opinion.

I constantly check the door. Even though It's not supposed to hit Portland before Weds and my tracking info has no update since Friday when it departed from IL, I still check the porch... JUST IN CASE.

Mine just arrived Tix - 10/27/91 - Oakland Col BSP - 6/9/93 - Auburn Hill, Michigan Box condition ok, but I can see where people are complaining about delamination. I think a little wood glue would work on mine and painters tape for a clamp. I will try the glue, but on the same note, once I suck in all the disc I will not be touching the thing, well almost never. The book is a little cheap, cover a little flimsy, and maybe not attached to the book very well. Scroll is a cute idea, leather throng will suck to retie. Scroll not very useful unless you work to get the curl out of it. Might be worth framing. I have no gripes about the cd cases, they will be handled once and will survive. All in all it nice, in the end the cd's are what you really want and price per disc is acceptable. I haven't checked the disc to see if they're all there, will find out when I suck them in. Will be using two computers for sucking so shouldn't take long. I had a red lining. The whole unit has a nice heft to it, feels like 700 bucks of weight. :-) You know what really would have pushed this over the top, a little music box device to play maybe a little refrain from ripple or something. Maybe a little cheesy, but a good chuckle.

Jesus Christ, the 9/10/91 show smokes. Actually, all the shows from 89-91 have been great. Really great. I will need to re-listen to 85-88, I don't recall specifics (except the 87 Dew). The 89 show I was already very familiar with, and with the multi-track remixing, it sounds amazing on top of being a very intense show. 90 just cooked - I'm not taking notes, but I remember the China-Rider in particular was smokin', and Saint Of Circumstance (not one of my favorite tunes, normally) was fantastic. Oh, yeah, the Crazy Fingers, and Playing sandwich was top notch, too. But, 91 is playing now, Marsalis is mixed well, even though it's just two track, you can hear the crowd going NUTS in the background, and for good reason.

I wouldn't put much stock into Deadbase having the correct dates/setlists for the early stuff. Deadlists has some interesting comments, from Jeff Tiedrich: Jeff Tiedrich: "There's a bit of a mystery here. The Alligator>Caution that appears on both the 11/10/67 and 11/11/67 tapes are identical -- even on the vault reels! it is unknown which of the two dates these songs belong to, but it's not unreasonable to presume that 11/10 is the original and 11/11 is the copy. The best explanation (read: speculation) is that someone copied the 11/10/67 Alligator>Caution onto the end of the 11/11/67 reels. The master reels for these two shows were not originally in the Dead's vault -- they were stored at Warner Brothers, which is presumably where all this mysterious copying took place." David Sorochty: "There is another Cryptical-->Other one--->Cryptical sequence on the Shrine '67 tapes currently listed as being from the 11/10/67 show, which definitely is not duplication of the other one (i.e. The 11/11/67 version). The two versions have slightly different lyrics. It is not duplication of any other version in circulation. Maybe they did play it both nights. If more information comes to light about this sequence and its correct date, then its status may change. This is another mystery about these tapes.

My box made it to the heart of dixie on 10/09 the 26th anniversary of my last show. I have not opened it yet. Tomorrow represents the completion of my 51st trip around the sun. I will open tomorrow and give an update. The UPS guy was on the ball, he pushed the SunStealie against the wall so the nosy neighbor could not see it. Thanks local UPS guy. Box looks in good shape. I had gone by the house at 5 pm on Friday, nothing. Went to visit the folks and check in on them. Got back to the house at 6:15 and there it was. I had given up on 10/09 as I too had no emails or communication. A little bit a backstory stuff. On August 7, 1995 I had just started grad school. On the 9th, after class, I went to the local mall in search of a Chick-Fil-A fix. As I am walking in their was a group of young hippies outside crying. Went I went in I saw that Jerry had passed. It made me look back but I was also starting a new future so I did not let it get me down. On October 2, 1995 I mailed a detailed letter of affection to a close female friend. On October 9 (7 days, 7 which means "complete") her name became a named storm which became a hurricane. Not to bore with details, the affection was rebuffed. So Friday, instead of opening the box, I listed to the last show that I attended. It sounded so good, and I got so incredibly torqued. As we rounded the corner into "Death Don't" through to "Attics" it dawned on me the dates. 20 years to the date that I mailed her the letter, we got the email saying last chance to update mailing address. Seven days later the box arrived on my doorstep. 26 years from my last show. The number of man being the difference in the dates. As I said, I had been so involved when Jerry passed with other parts of life I never really mourned Jerry. As I was torqued up and listening to Attics, all of the dates clicked in my mind and I lost it. Staring at just the nice shipping box and putting all this together I finally had all of that release of missing Jerry. How much he (and all the family) mean to my life. The death of love and the rose withering away. It all was just way more powerful than I could have expected. I don't know why there was a shipping delay from 9/18. All I know is that single day will go down as a truly epic day in my memory. Now tomorrow as I celebrate another year, and continue to move forward, I get to open this monster and bask in the glory of 50 years. Raise a glass to GOGD and all of my new friends on here! Salute! PS - I am going to try and upload a poor picture of 1987 Ventura Fairgrounds. It has the SunStealie as its Tapestry Backdrop.

JUST IN CASE. Ha! I'm the same way. If I didn't have to leave during the day to go to work, I'd be camped out on the front porch the entire time, except for the times when I go check the back door ... just in case, since a FedEx package was dropped off there once.

The box has arrived, I have not opened it yet. The anticipation is killing me. Tomorrow, I will take the entire day to dive into this box of goodness. Kinda reminds me of when I was a youngin, the anticipation of the new box, the wait for the ok to go into the box, the joy of the box, the sweetness, the savory sweetness... then, it was over. But with this box, it will last and last. Can't wait to dip into this sweet jelly roll. Thank you, for a real good time.

Number 4959 arrived in NH this afternoon. Beautiful package and no issues with the box! Listening to '66 right now and loving every second. Only nit I have is that I have two copies of Disc 2 from the the Albany 3/27/93 show but no Disc 3. Backstage pass was for Autzen 8/22/93 and the ticket was Cal Expo 5/27/93. I really do miss those mailorder tickets with the glitter on them.

Try it on another system (computer, home hi-fi, etc.), as it could be your car's system that is the problem. My old car used to scratch up my CDs, which is why I will only use CD-R copies (never originals) even in my newer car now.

Another happy, excited camper listening to 1966 disc 1 right now. Just checked the list, happily see 5 shows which I attended, 9/24/72, 4/25/77, 5/3/86, 3/20/92 (with my then 2 year old daughter!) & 10/1/94. And the Cape Cod venue from 1979 is just a few miles from my present home. Can't wait to hear them from this box!! But, I must go in order... I see a lot of posts with the Box # listed. I can't find it on mine, can anyone give me a clue on where to find it? Ticket in the book was 5/27/93 Cal Expo & BSP was 8/22/93 Autzen Stadium Dave/Rhino/GDP/Nicholas/Jerry/Bob/Phil/Mickey/Bill/T.C./Keith/Donna/Pigpen/Brent/Vince/Bruce/et al, THANK YOU FOR THIS AND ALL GOOD THINGS IN ALL GOOD TIME.

so have no idea what my box number is or if I have a "Miracle." I am putting the CDs on the shelf with my other CDs and have no use or room for the box itself (pretty as it is). Will likely put the physical box (sans CDs) scroll and book up for auction on ebay.

The EAGLE has landed in Alaska. Was very excited to open box. However, found some damage issues. Two top corners of lid are somewhat crushed. Bottom of box pushed in, tearing paper liner of book compartment lid. Box cutter slice near sunken treasure chest in same compartment. Crease on front of box. Chip out of corner. Music, so far, just exactly perfect.I think more care should have been given in protecting the box for shipping. Amy at customer service took down notes for my damage claim. She does a great job, thank-you Amy. Dr. Rhino is suppose to get back to me in a week or two. Not sure what can be done but till then I'll just listen to the music play Hope all are enjoying this amazing release!!!

(Everyone asking if my name is in the book, too. No personal acknowledgement for Deadhead submissions. Bothers others more than me.) Every silver lining has a touch of gray. (See 1 & 2 above.) Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile !!! (See 1 & 2 above.)

If you look at the picture of the reel on the CD sleeve, it shows the dates as in Deadbase. Deadbase does rely on what's in circulation and does have errors. It's always best to check multiple sources to be sure. That show has a lineage that has been under discussion for years. I'll defer to Dave as what they want to call it.

#352 landed in Denver about an hour ago. Ticket - 1991-10-07 Oakland Colisuem Backstage - 1993-06-11 - Buckeye Music Center - Hebron, OH Everything with the box itself appears to be in good shape after a good once over. Going through the disks now and unfortunately disk 1 of the 75' show has a crack that goes all the way through from the center about 3/4 of the way to the outer edge. Don't even need to bother to see if it will play. Getting a replacement disk should be easy enough. Check your disks folks! Still going through it but hopefully that is the only problem I am going to have to report to customer service. Almost forgot...I have the red faux velvet interior.

Gary Farseer, great story . . . thanks for sharing that. Crazy how numbers can work sometimes. I've also been missing Jerry, more than usual lately. While we've been waiting for the Box, I've been watching a lot of GD Live and interviews with Jerry, on youtube. And though Jerry wasn't the most demonstrative lead guitar player, I just love to watch him play. His "liquid-y" runs and slurs are so articulate and beautiful, I can't think of another guitar player who plays like that. And he emanated such cool grace. There is one interview, in particular, that is just great. It's Jerry being interviewed for the "The History of Rock 'N' Roll" mini-series. But this is the unedited 52 minute interview (and at the end of the interview, there is a short piece with Dick Latvala giving a tour of "The Vault"). If you haven't seen it, and you need a break from the Box, spend a little time with Jerry and this interview. It's really laid back, like he's in your living room, telling you stories. He's immensely interesting, like the grand wizard, and some of his facial expressions and reactions to the "off camera" interviewer, are absolutely priceless. In a moment, he goes from . . . 'jeez, do I have to answer that stupid question for the 8 millionth time?' . . . to telling the story like it's the first time. Such a great conversationalist . . . really, like his soloing. Just search, "Jerry Garcia Interview The History of Rock 'N' Roll", on youtube. Such a cool guy . . . I miss him on this earth . . . and sometimes (most times) when I listen to "Mountains Of The Moon" on Aoxomoxoa, and I'm in a certain head space, my god, get me a kleenex. Probably, my favorite "ballad" of Jerry's.
