We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

I've had that before with older players as well, but as you said, sounds like there is still something specific to the disc that it cannot read while newer ones can..better error tracking, or whatever. Given that and the fact that the rest of the box played fine on it, I'd still proceed with contacting Mary or Rhino for a replacement. Doesn't mean you can't also get a new player...just to be *sure. :D I got to do some listening today, finished the 1988 Trip this morning, and this afternoon have had a replay of the 1976 show. Unfortunately took a nap for a decent chunk of the first set, so need to relisten there. But really enjoying the Playin' and on sequence for this second time through.

I've experienced that with CD-R's. The new player doesn't have problems when the old player does. I think that newer players are better at getting the data through a defect. There is an import setting in iTunes that does something like read the data around a defect repeatedly to figure it out. I always have that box checked when importing CDs.

it hangs up in the same place actually, at 1:14 of shakedown. I listened to the rest of the show on that same player without a hitch and only have 5 or 6 more shows to go before I've spun the whole set. Since the place it gets hung up is consistent there is something happening there, perhaps the encoded data at that mark just can't be read by my old player? I would think if it's a disc defect it would happen in most players. I'll try it in my car later today.

Glad it's solved.Were the problems always at the same place on the CD or random? Same place would indicate a disc defect. Buy a carousel CD player, just plop in a whole show and press play. I've had good luck with Onkyo going back to tape decks. The old CD player is from 1997 (6 disc changer) and I use it in my office. Only within the last year has started having more pops and clicks. I didn't think to clean the laser, thanks Wilfred. But I wouldn't be surprised if it is finally wearing out. It has served me well! My newer one is a 6-disc changer and sounds great (with Onkyo receiver and Bose speakers).

Try cleaning the laser lens. Sometimes dust gets in there and affects the playing of discs.

You hit the nail on the head, just tried it on my iMac and blu-ray and it played flawlessly. The CD player in my office is about 10 years old so that must be the culprit. Good news in the end, it was puzzling since the disc looked pristine. Good excuse for a new player!

Three Weeks, still no word

Three weeks (almost) in after returning Boxzilla, still no updates past the fact that they received it. Will wait until the 1 month mark, than going to start pestering MaryE and Dr. Rhino. In the interim, got this interesting email from SpinCDs where they are releasing (not in the US or Japan) of Keith's first show in ' 71. Said going to be released in February, anyone know if GD is going to officially release this as well? Or should eager shoppers jump over to Spin? They also have a nice Cambodian benefit CD (from 1980, I think), though it is short, the Sugar Mag with Santana looks inviting.

Secondary market beats dead.net

I bought a single show from a helpful head on this site that doesn't like Brent.I bought it for my brother in Texas,as he couldn't buy the box.Looks like my first listen to physical product will be with this secondary market purchase before TPTB can get my order to me. In this day and age,this is pathetic. Shit,we got tha interwebs,indoor plummin' & lots o modern convienences out here in the boonies.... Give me an address....I'll come pick it up. Good excuse for a road trip,eh?

For those still waiting

I received my box last Friday at 1:47 pm. The email with tracking info arrived Friday at 7:42 pm. Also as far as ripping, I put in the comments: YYYY-MM-DD-## town, state, venue ##= set list number. Then in iTunes I sort on comments and get all the tunes in chrono order. For studio albums, I use release date.

Anyone selling the 5/16/81 show?

I probably should have thought of this sooner, but jrf68's post got me to thinking that an individual show could make a great gift, especially for someone who was at the show. An old friend of mine that's not a deadhead, but does enjoy them, was at the 5/16/81 show. And he lives in Texas, too. But, jrf68, unless your name is Michelle, my friend is not your brother so there is no risk of us both buying this show for him :) If I can get it for a reasonable price, PM me.

Still do not have my box either in Georgia. When most of you got yours last week, I called and was assured I would get it today. Didn't get it today and called and was told that it may be a while before mine was shipped, but that they would do something special for me. Got an email a few minutes later letting me know that since I was being patient about not getting it when the rest of you did, they would let me stream the box for free. Really?!?! Like the rest of you, trying to stay positive and wait for the box. Kind of weird that I ordered it on the day that they announced it and still don't have it while guys in Europe are already getting theirs. Wish they knew more about what is going on at dead.net. The wait will be worth it.

Check those discs...

Finished ripping almost all the CDs to my computer. Had a couple shows that played better on another computer, but the freakin' last disc of the 1995 Salt Lake City show won't play on any of my computers. Looks to have a little bit of disc rot or something on the edges. haha..the last disc. Anyway, check those CDs. Wouldn't want to find this problem 3 or 4 months from now.

...I feel (felt) your angst this past long (holiday) weekend, but, with absolutely no notice, and while completely off radar at UPSMyChoice, 30 Rock debuted in the Dark Heart of Appalachia today. Based on criticisms, I had expected a balsa contrivance secured for shipping with only a few drops of Mr. Ed destined to disintegrate upon contact with O2 at opening. Far from it. Not Samsonite; but, at a gross price per disc that we near-universally agree is fair without discount for packaging, anything more is simply unrealistic. This is the new bar. Moreover, having collected every official release except TOO (a Spring Too Far), or any of the "greatest hits" comps, and in light of the comprehensive coverage provided through this production opus, I now withdraw from compulsory purchases. Thank you Rhino & GDP - it's been a phenomenal trip! what's with the static? & a worst sounding show question

Wow, a lot noise going on about some Australian guy (or gal, or guys), can't follow it, probably better if I don't. Anyway, I am waiting (I guess until the beginning of November) for the USB set, and restraining myself from listening to any of the streaming sets. My question (may sound odd, but give it a read), which show has the worst sound in the set? That is the one that I want to start with. Why? Because I don't know where I want to start, and I already thought about bouncing back and forth starting form the middle. From what I've read, it looks like one of the early '80s shows has the poorest sound (on the CD). Also, I am curious about if there is a difference between the poorest sounding CD and its USB (supposedly high res) version b/c I was told they were separately mastered. If anyone is interested in a virtual shoot out, send a PM, we can trade copies and compare. In the unlikely event that I get more than a couple of responses, I'll pick two at random. Glad everyone is loving this set (aside from a few defects, not surprising).

was just diggin Dave's #6 & thought how there hadn't been a comment about the show from 1970 while feeling jrf68's pain reading these comments...pretty sure most of us in Cali are still waiting too, brother... but we ALL SHOULD be happy tomorrow... mine is supposed to be delivered on wednesday & read a few others expecting their Boxzilla's tomorrow as well... may the force be with you... ♤

It is approaching!

30 Trips arrived in Paris! It is approaching. Home delivery is scheduled for tomorrow. I will take a day off to take delivery of the magic box. I'm overjoyed! Wilfred, No, I have not proposed or submitted article on the show Zenith. I attended the show on 28 October. That of October 27 has great moments, like China> Rider.
