We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

first, i agree and echo everything @across the rio has said. but to pile on a bit, there is no doubt that rhino is aware of how incredibly terrible the usb product delivery has been and how inexplicably awful and bewildering the metadata issue is. or how they promised the book, etc etc but are they really just going to blow the whole thing off without a word on it. and by word, i don't mean, "happy holidays. here are some greeting cards we found in a closet and ticket to a show you didnt go to". i love - strike that - live for the music but i have lots and lots and lots of music. i think i may be done supporting the GD/Rhino "products"

USB Metadata

The USB metadata issue is just astonishing. Setting aside I have no freaking need for show-venue-date-that "the song is live" in the song title field (all captured in appropriate fields already): You simply can't play them as a show without massive repair of the song sequencing. As delivered if you simply try to play a show you will typically hear Set 1 song 1, set two song 1, set two after drums, set one song 2, etc. It is flagged for CD use. I spent two hours re-tagging five shows and am trying to work the rest. At that pace (which will probably be slower since early shows have some really short shows) it is at least 12 hours of re-tagging to make usable. multiply that by 1,000 - 12,000 hours of effort by the buyers because Rhino didn't have one person spend 40 hours doing it right in the first place. They should be ashamed. And now, I find that I can't really listen to the ones I fixed because the music is so good I can't concentrate on re-tagging correctly while listening (but that may be just me :) ).

#740 arrives in northwestern Montana!

Somehow, I find myself both mightily impressed yet equally underwhelmed at the same time. The Bolt is a lot smaller than I pictured it and it's made of metal whereas I assumed it would be made from some high-tech miracle plastic. I successfully transferred both the FLAC and MP3 directories to my PC just fine and spot checks of the copied files seem to indicate that everything is in order, technically speaking. But having added the MP3s to iTunes, I am stunned by the amount of time and effort it's gonna take to simply put the Songs in their proper playing order, to say nothing of cleaning up the annotations. I am not looking forward to that EPIC task but hey-- at least I'll have really good Music to listen to while I do it! Regarding the ongoing "Books for BoltHeads" discussion: I sure hope that Dr. Rhino's "promise" is true and not just a mean-spirited Group Punking by some jackass who thought it'd be fun to mess with those of us participating in the "Epic Wait". But assuming that it's true, consider this: by the time that email from Dr. Rhino appeared in this thread, Dead/Rhino were already deep into the Bolt Shipping process and the last thing they'd wanna do is re-tool the packages, delaying receipt even more. Also, the original Print Run for the physical Book would have been only enough to fill the limited edition CD Box Sets and a few extra for promotion and/or "breakage", right? It seems to me that Dr. Rhino is gonna have to place an entirely new Order at the Printer for 1,000 more copies and it's not like they can be produced overnight. I always assumed that if the Book is actually provided to us, it'd come separately and certainly not until well into the new year. In the end though, it's really all about the Music for me and WOWZER!-- this is some AWESOME Music!!!

Yes, the first place i checked was "my computer" realizing that it would likely not autoplay. The USB drive just flat out does not show up. Going to try it on my laptop, then reboot the desktop. i just want to upload it to my cloud storage and have a safe copy of the music before i start doing anything with it. Hoping my Dead Bolt isn't Dead!

Deasons,The Bolt is not auto play. You need to go to your computer where your drives are listed. You should see a lettered drive with the 30 trips Icon. Open that, and there will be a list of folders. Note the high res files are in the Music folder - sub folder flac. The presentation folder is MP3 only. I hope you don't have a "Dead Bolt"

Bolthead Question

Am I reading right, did the bolt NOT come with the big wooden box? Or a book? I thought you were getting everything but the disc. Besides all the file naming problems, THAT would really suck not to have the box. You DID pay the same price and waited a whole lot longer. I know the box is a useless piece of shit, but a neat useless piece.

First of all, as I explained in later responses, my comment was purposefully hyperbolic and snarky because it was in response to another comment much much the same tone. If you go back to the comment I was responding to, referenced in the title of my comment, mine might make a little more sense. Secondly, ripping a cd to hd is easy, but ripping a cd to hd correctly (i.e. no bit loss and in an archival format)and tagging the tracks takes time. It approximately 45 mins per disc if there are not imperfections on the disc surface. That's no imperfections, not "ah shucks this still plays in the cd player" condition, but truly pristine quality. Any imperfection adds time to the extraction process, adding to the effort. Now I'm not saying you have to be active the whole 45 mins. Approximately 75% of that time is taken up by the extraction process. But if you want to get it right, your computer's resources will be dedicated mainly to the extraction process. You can get light stuff done, like tagging, so lets bump the time per disc down to 35 mins. You could walk away and forget it I guess, but you have to come back every 35 mins to repeat the process for each disc. Spreading it out over a few nights or weekends lessens the burden of the effort, but not the amount of time it takes. At 35 mins per disc, 83 discs, it works out to about 48.4 hours of time from start to finish. If you want a lossy (mp3) copy for your i-tunes or on the go, you have to add file conversion time to this process which can take 5 to 15 mins per show. The time effort for the USB, product to hd (and in a perfect world where Rhino actually sells a finished product), takes from 90 mins (USB 3.0 connection) to 4-6 hours (USB 2.0 connection) and requires no additional effort. I've estimated the times based on my experience transferring similar amounts of audio data over those connections, since I don't have the USB for a direct measurement. In my several decades of experience (I've lived in 5 different decades after all) 48.4 hours from product to hd, with a break to change the medium every 35 mins while tagging the last fileset, is considerably more effort than 6 hours with no additional effort. YMMV.

Secondary market beats dead.net

I bought a single show from a helpful head on this site that doesn't like Brent.I bought it for my brother in Texas,as he couldn't buy the box.Looks like my first listen to physical product will be with this secondary market purchase before TPTB can get my order to me. In this day and age,this is pathetic. Shit,we got tha interwebs,indoor plummin' & lots o modern convienences out here in the boonies.... Give me an address....I'll come pick it up. I received my box last Friday at 1:47 pm. The email with tracking info arrived Friday at 7:42 pm. Also as far as ripping, I put in the comments: YYYY-MM-DD-## town, state, venue ##= set list number. Then in iTunes I sort on comments and get all the tunes in chrono order. For studio albums, I use release date.

Anyone selling the 5/16/81 show?

I probably should have thought of this sooner, but jrf68's post got me to thinking that an individual show could make a great gift, especially for someone who was at the show. An old friend of mine that's not a deadhead, but does enjoy them, was at the 5/16/81 show. And he lives in Texas, too. But, jrf68, unless your name is Michelle, my friend is not your brother so there is no risk of us both buying this show for him :) If I can get it for a reasonable price, PM me.

Still do not have my box either in Georgia. When most of you got yours last week, I called and was assured I would get it today. Didn't get it today and called and was told that it may be a while before mine was shipped, but that they would do something special for me. Got an email a few minutes later letting me know that since I was being patient about not getting it when the rest of you did, they would let me stream the box for free. Really?!?! Like the rest of you, trying to stay positive and wait for the box. Kind of weird that I ordered it on the day that they announced it and still don't have it while guys in Europe are already getting theirs. Wish they knew more about what is going on at dead.net. The wait will be worth it.

Finished ripping almost all the CDs to my computer. Had a couple shows that played better on another computer, but the freakin' last disc of the 1995 Salt Lake City show won't play on any of my computers. Looks to have a little bit of disc rot or something on the edges. haha..the last disc. Anyway, check those CDs. Wouldn't want to find this problem 3 or 4 months from now.

Based on criticisms, I had expected a balsa contrivance secured for shipping with only a few drops of Mr. Ed destined to disintegrate upon contact with O2 at opening. Far from it. Not Samsonite; but, at a gross price per disc that we near-universally agree is fair without discount for packaging, anything more is simply unrealistic. This is the new bar. Moreover, having collected every official release except TOO (a Spring Too Far), or any of the "greatest hits" comps, and in light of the comprehensive coverage provided through this production opus, I now withdraw from compulsory purchases. Thank you Rhino & GDP - it's been a phenomenal trip! what's with the static? & a worst sounding show question

Wow, a lot noise going on about some Australian guy (or gal, or guys), can't follow it, probably better if I don't. Anyway, I am waiting (I guess until the beginning of November) for the USB set, and restraining myself from listening to any of the streaming sets. My question (may sound odd, but give it a read), which show has the worst sound in the set? That is the one that I want to start with. Why? Because I don't know where I want to start, and I already thought about bouncing back and forth starting form the middle. From what I've read, it looks like one of the early '80s shows has the poorest sound (on the CD). Also, I am curious about if there is a difference between the poorest sounding CD and its USB (supposedly high res) version b/c I was told they were separately mastered. If anyone is interested in a virtual shoot out, send a PM, we can trade copies and compare. In the unlikely event that I get more than a couple of responses, I'll pick two at random. Glad everyone is loving this set (aside from a few defects, not surprising).

It is approaching!

30 Trips arrived in Paris! It is approaching. Home delivery is scheduled for tomorrow. I will take a day off to take delivery of the magic box. I'm overjoyed! Wilfred, No, I have not proposed or submitted article on the show Zenith. I attended the show on 28 October. That of October 27 has great moments, like China> Rider.
