"When we began discussing audio projects to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead back in 2012, we knew we wanted to do something completely unprecedented. We could think of nothing more exciting or ambitious than a career-spanning overview of the band's live legacy focused on what best tells the story: complete concerts. Our first criterion was the very best live music to represent any given year in the band’s history. We wanted to make sure that there were not only the tent-pole shows that fans have been demanding for decades but also ones that are slightly more under the radar, but equally excellent. For those who listen to the entire box straight through, chronologically, the narrative of the Grateful Dead's live legacy will be seen as second to none in the pantheon of music history." - David Lemieux

We are more than pleased to announce the Grateful Dead's most ambitious release ever: 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN. Available as both an 80-disc boxed set and a custom lightning-bolt USB drive, the collection includes 30 unreleased live shows, one for each year the band was together from 1966 to 1995, along with one track from their earliest recording sessions in 1965. Packed with over 73 hours of music, both the boxed set and the USB drive will be individually numbered limited editions.

The 80-disc boxed set is individually numbered and limited to 6,500 copies, a nod to the band’s formation in 1965. Along with the CDs, it also includes a gold-colored 7-inch vinyl single which bookends the band’s career. The A-side is “Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks)” from the band’s earliest recording session in 1965 with the B-side of the last song the band ever performed together live, “Box Of Rain” recorded during their final encore at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 9, 1995.

The box also comes with a 288-page book that features an extensive, career-spanning essay written by Nick Meriwether, who oversees the Dead archives at the University of California, Santa Cruz, along with special remembrances of the band submitted by fans. Also included is a scroll that offers a visual representation of how the band’s live repertoire has evolved through the years.

The USB drive version* will be shaped like a gold lightning bolt with the Grateful Dead 50th anniversary logo engraved on the side. The drive includes all of the music from the collection in both FLAC (96/24) and MP3 formats and is an individually numbered limited edition of 1,000 copies. Digital version of the book also included on USB.

Shows will NOT be sold individually on CD. This release is sure to sell out quickly so pre-order your copy today and stick around as we will be revealing a mighty fine selection of music, art, and much, much more right here.

(Looking for a smaller 50th Anniversary commemorative keepsake? September 18th will see the release of a four-CD version of the collection titled 30 TRIPS AROUND THE SUN: THE DEFINITIVE LIVE STORY 1965-1995. More on that here.)

Why are we bombarded every day with sales posts from a certain overseas member, who is using this space for personal gain through commodification. The Terms of Use for this site states it is forbidden to: "Use the Site to advertise or offer to sell or buy any goods or services without our express prior written consent." So why is this continually allowed to go on here? It's unethical and an abuse of what this space is for. Do we need moderators? Or do they need more help? This needs to be addressed. Who do we need to contact to communicate this to the management of this site?

Although I only comprehend 1/3 of your knowledge, I hear ya about blind loyalty to purchase. But since this isn't technically Rhino selling this anymore you should see if anyone on this site may have some 90's shows for sale. Who knows you may get lucky and someone posts they have these available to purchase. I doubt it though. Good Luck

Concerning the worst sounding shows on USB vs CD, when they said they used different masters I expect for the USB they didn't do any fadeouts and the slight overlaps that they do for the CD's, plus in order to do the HDCD encoding, the peak amplitude must be under -6db because the HDCD adds 6db (or decoding reduces by 6db - amounting to the same thing). Maybe they applied some dynamic range compression to the CD masters, but if so I bet it would be a very small amount. In the past I posted how it appears they did some dynamic range compression on spring 90 TOO because I compared the 3/29/90 show hi res download to the CD. I realize now that I didn't decode the CD version using hdcd.exe before analyzing those, so it's possible they used absolutely no dynamic range compression on the CD's, I will need to recheck that. In any case, the sound quality of the worst sounding shows (or any of the others) will not be any different on USB vs CD. The hiss on the '82 show and the multi-song aud patch on the '81 show will sound exactly the same. I'd bet the "different masters" only refers to the fadeouts/overlapping, and maybe peak volume level and that's it. I think it's highly unlikely the masters are any different in any other respect at all. Edit: the double blind testing a friend and I were going to do last weekend or this weekend will have to wait a little while. Highly unexpected success of the cubbies (and a couple of other things) has intervened ;)

Also, do NOT repeat over and over and over in your mind the following: I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, I cannot live without Spring '90 TOO, .......

I got mine today in the UK. Very nice package. The only negative is that the segues aren't indicated on the packaging, or in the book. When I rip CDs, I join the tracks for all the jams, so I'll have to look up each show elsewhere. But I'm looking forward to listening. I'm going to take this slowly, one show a day. I assume my scroll doesn't say MIRACLE; I guess it would be printed pretty big, but I don't see it anywhere. Has anyone gotten a miracle scroll?

I promise y'all, this is the LAST time I will acknowledge this problem many of us have called saintstephen1971 (aka thebanditisback on eBay, aka Stephen Gilmore from some hole down under). Let's do this: Simply send a PM to MaryE, our patient moderator, saying something along the lines of: "Despite many, many pleas to stop his commercial posts on this message board, member saintstephen1971 not only has not stopped, he has antagonized everyone who complains. He is blatantly violating the Terms of Use with his advertisements of product purchased on this site expressly for resale at a profit. Many of us find this (and him) offensive. Please moderate his activities on this board if you would be so kind. Thank you." All you have to do is log in, go to your profile, and hit "Write Message". Type "MaryE" in the "To" box and fire away. Thank you to all who take the time to do this. And my apologies to any supporters of saintstephen1971 (if any).

Kate's post reminded me of a funny convergence of sorts between Mr Ed and the Grateful Dead (beyond the obvious rhyming.). East Troy, WI that is home to the Alpine Valley Music Theatre, on the weekend of 6/28-29/86 hosted both the Grateful Dead AND a Mr. Ed convention. Did you know there were EdHeads? I bet references to "a few drops of Mr. Ed" would be frowned upon.

30 Trips has been scanned into Portland as of 12:41am PST. I can practically smell the balsa wood and globs of "Mr. Ed". Now time to get some sleep for a few hours in bed before I move down to the couch/living room for less comfortable daytime sleep. 3rd shift is uncool.. except being home during package deliveries.

Wow! Today I received the box (much earlier than I expected it). It's a true wonder. Normally I don't care about the package, but this time I first had to look at this beautiful wooden box in amazement before opening it. The pictures of the four seasons are lovely. And the book is even more beautiful than the pdf file we received on 9/18. What I like especially about this box is the fact that all the CD's have a normal format, so I can put them in my Grateful Dead shelves ordered by date. (With the May 77 box that was not possible). Now there are about 660 Grateful Dead CD's on my shelves, most of them officially released! And finally the content, the heart of the box: All the concerts I had the time to listen to until now are exceptional. This box is a labour of some years and we the fans can do the harvest; thank you David Lemieux and all others involved in this project! So.....da nnn da da, dadahhh ripple in still waters Music is Love Romeo Nathan Bumann (alias Mr. RNB)

I'm curious if any of you serious collectors have compared the sound quality of the shows on 30 Trips to the better boards of the shows in circulation. I gave a quick listen to 2/22/69 Vallejo (one of my favorite shows) and compared it against the Charlie Miller board I have and I'm not convinced the 30 Trips one sounds better. There's a nasty quality glitch between Mountains and Dark Star a dn Dark Star sounds a bit muffled, though less hiss. Anyone else?

I think Rhino Records or GDP should hire Charlie Miller to work on the Grateful Dead vault for the official releases. The young man with "golden ears". Agree or disagree?

All my children are named Charlie Miller, even the girls. Goldfish and cat too. Its a bit confusing at times, but the least I could do. He seems to do a better job with the cassette masters, that's for sure. ..but Norman and company have come a long way too, I mean no disrespect.

IT's concerning to me that within in the 30 TRIPS box set of the 1980s shows, the 1986 show sounds better than any other show in the 1980s decade other than 1989(which has to sound the best, it was multi-tracked)...I'm not a big fan of the 10/26/89 1st set. Anyway, 1986 is often regarded as the "worst" year played by the band, and this show sounds phenomenally played & recorded.....ima a little suspect of the effort than went into the rest on the 1980s decade on this BOX.....Haven't listened yet to any year before 1979, but I bet they sound perfectly recorded & mastered, jus sayn

I've said here before and will say again, there are times I swear Rhino just goes to the archive and downloads a Miller board and releases it as "official". Even the run times are close. In reality, the official ones "most" of the times seem to have a little more "presence", the sound seems a little closer and wider. But I always check against what I've downloaded. I know one of the shows I checked against the streaming stuff sounded a lot better than what I had. Even when some here post about some "great" soundboard on the archive I go check against my copy to see if it's a newer, better copy. But Charlie the man! Anyone remember or have a copy of that youtube cartoon, where the guy is raving to his wife about a new Charlie miller soundboard he just downloaded? When the video of "i married a deadhead" came out I went looking for it and couldn't find.

I'm sorry but this is even better than the Europe Box Set, I think out of all the box sets ever released this is as good as it gets, thank you Dave for having this idea, and Rhino for supporting it. And if you don't agree that is cool (no need to start some crazy this box set is better than that one), just my thoughts and I felt it so much I wanted to thank the folks for making it happen. I love it even down to the red velvet, leather bound book, etc....just cool all the way. But looking at all 30 shows lined up in the box, looking through them and picking a year and giving it a spin, that is where the real majic is happening. Downtown

Charlie is indeed the man. St. Charlie? This one? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfy3uJrfVWo "Charlie Miller is releasing new soundboard sources for a number shows from 1972. I need to download these shows from etree as soon as they are seeded." Classic. In I married a deadhead, the wife says she would rather gargle with drano and shove broken glass and needles in her eyes than listen to more shows. In this one it ends with his wife asking for a divorce. Someone needs to do one of these depicting the moment Boxzilla gets delivered on the doorstep.

I probably would not return a 'Golden/Miracle/Special' scroll. Are you kidding me? 2 years from now, if I open a sealed shipping box with a 'Golden/Miracle/Special scroll? Cool Beans! It seems as if someone had the idea to make sure all shipping boxes were opened, as they were never sealed beyond the actual shipping box (Many of the shipping boxes have UPS/USPS writing on the boxes, as well, so between the shipping stickers and writing the shipping boxes won't be as pristine/collectible. So, a Golden/Miracle scroll or a 'made up something' to make sure, and I totally get the idea, less resale for $$$$ is what the powers that be wanted, and rightfully so. I dig that. Gratefully, Scroll #3625

This issues I am hearing on both the 82 and 83 shows will be worse in hi-res, which is a huge disappointment. The kick drum in 83 will most likely be more prominent. That 89 show will sound incredible though. That's the trade off. I think we all have to take into consideration how we are listening to these shows. If we hear, say, the 89 show, then immediately listen to the 82 show - the difference will be obvious, but if you just listen to the 82 show without hearing any other show the it is quite listenable (even with the hiss). It would be very disappointing if they just put 80s shows in the set that they knew weren't up to par quality wise because they knew those shows wouldn't sell on their own. I mean, for 83 especially - they could have done 10/15 or 10/17.

I have seen some people mention that the song segues are not denoted with the '>' symbol on the disk sleeves. I put those in as well when entering the info in Google Play. I was a little bummed at first but then noticed that they are denoted on the disks themselves. Hope this helps a few Heads out.
