With five distinct performances painting the masterpiece of 1978, Betty Cantor-Jackson's always-pristine soundboard recordings, and the "hall-of-fame pedigree" of the Dead's first-ever shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, this is one release that far exceeds excellence in music, sound quality, and rarity.

RTR Vs. E72 Steamer

Pretty much the same, except there are 2 bonus tracks from 5/24 on RTR (Lovelight & Stranger). And yet the steamer is stretched out to 4 discs. Some of the tracks start and end in different spots - Wharf Rat for example. One Man pointed out that discs 3 & 4 of the steamer are identical mixes, while discs 1 & 2 are slightly different. I can confirm that Sugar Magnolia is an identical mix, having compared the two on headphones (afterall, it's THE version of THE song that got me on the bus). Agree with Wharf Rat evaluation on RTR. This was my first ever Grateful Dead CD. It's no accident this show was chosen above the rest for commercial release. The Lovelight from 5/24 is Pigpen's last, and in my opinion best, as far as the non-jam arrangements in the song. They jammed so much and so differently on it over the years, you can't really compare them. It's also the only of the 3 E72 versions to include the doot-doot-doo section, which is the best part of the song (not sure how that gets left out). The jam is great here, they sound like the Allman Brothers - very Jessica-like. Hundred Year Hall is missing a ton of good tracks. I would advise picking up the Steamer version, which also features a better mix to my ears, at least when I put Bertha side by side on headphones. Bobby and Keith sounded louder, but not at anyone else's expense. Overall 4/24 & 4/26 are two of the best sounding shows in the box, probably as One Man confirmed with JN, they were not as rushed as the rest of the set, having already undergone a lengthy mastering process for their previous commercial release.

RtR/HYH vs. E72 Content

Rockin the Rheine has bonus content from the 5/24/72 Lyceum show, while Hundred Year Hall is missing several songs and the order is rearranged. Can't speak to any difference in sound as I don't have those shows from E72. Been picking up a couple shows at a time from E72, but since I already have Rockin the Rheine and Hundred Year Hall, the E72 versions of those shows are at the bottom of the list for future acquisition.

That melody in Part 2 is exactly the moment that might make it my favorite Dark Star (top three for sure). You just made me pop it in.Sinister is a perfect description of that Me and My Uncle, menaced by the dark galaxy wherein it resides. Love that final chord, all hands unleashing and Pigpen's organ shimmering on top of it all and disappearing into Phil's punctuation and Keith's swirling notes as the ship launches back into space. One of the rare Wharf Rats with vocals as sweet as Skull & Roses, and Jerry may go one better with that last, heartfelt "true to me".... Can't advise if Rockin the Rhein is much different-sounding then the steamer, I haven't done a side by side. But it always seems especially rich in the context of that chocolate-wood packaging. spam, How lucky to have seen that Cobo Doors show. I've only heard bits, but I think it's one of the better-regarded of those Bright Midnight releases. lowspark, thanks for the Meadows tip, this weekend is out, but maybe, just maybe, next Sunday.... Snowboard has been under my bed for about four years. Shameful.

Kardashians - just for a laugh

Was at a neighborhood bunko party last night, yes a deadhead who goes to couples bunko parties, but I did eat a bunch of eatables before going! Oh, sometimes a half hit! Need something to get thru parties with conservative Christian republicans! (was that redundant?) Anyway the K-Girls came up, mostly negative comments with racial undertones. All I could think about was what my old man would say, not politically correct at all with his barely 6th grade education. "I wouldn't kick her out of bed for eating crackers" or another of this choice comments, "...a ass only a black man could love". Me, I got nothing against the K-girls because they don't affect my life at all. Now Ted Cruz,,, he scares me!

RtR DS is awesomestill totally happy over the new box release The Yes Album: an album for the ages I do not at all advocate killing any person, but can we kill the CONCEPT of the Kardashians? Please? I give not one fnk about them, yet I know about them, and they keep popping up in my world: internet, grocery store check out, cnn.com, time.com, etc. They do nothing to better the world. Yet they are everywhere. luckily i can click them away, or turn the page, or focus on putting groceries on the conveyor belt. Hmmph. anyway, have a beautiful weekend, fellow Deadheads.

"5 complete shows, 3 mastered from the never-before-circulated Betty Boards" Does this mean that only 3 of these shows were from Bettys' board tapes? Or that 3 have them haven't circulated but are all from Bettys' tapes?

Less than a week now...

Another fine collection of Grateful Dead will be hitting my mailbox or doorstep in mere days. As if Dave's 18 weren't enough, now 5 more Bettys to soak up. What I've heard in the Listening Parties has me anxious to dig in. I'm not huge on May '78, which is mainly what's been released apart from the two Dave's 7 & 15. 7 is my least favorite Pick so far, 15 one of my top 4-6 (depending on my mood). The segues on 15 are not very good, but the songs themselves are extremely well played. The Listening Parties have much smoother segues, particularly that Estimated> Other One> Wharf Rat> Around & Around, but still the same powdery intensity that is the hallmark of '78 Dead. The biggest selling point to me is the 3 Wharf Rats! Was slightly disappointed that May '77 only had one, they killed Wharf Rat throughout '77, particularly because of the addition of Mickey for the huge build into the Fly Away, but Dave's 15 Wharf is probably my favorite version, so I look forward to these, plus Jack Straw, some Scarlet> Fire action. Anyone else excited?

All that talk of Walkerswood made me hungry. Picked up a jar at Kroger for $5, shrimp was on sale for $6/lb. Gonna have grilled jerk shrimp tacos. Just put in 5-9-77, having a beer while the shrimp soaks up some flavor. Will save half of the shrimp for tomorrow, they should be well marinated by then.Cheers, all.

Big shout out to Vince (Vguy72) - was great hanging out with him on Cinco de Mayo down in old part of Vegas. So cool to talk shop with a fellow head. Vince is a great guy - thanks for your hospitality! Vince - I'd post over at DaP18, but have not had a chance to listen to the release yet and would prefer to listen with fresh ears!!! Definitely looking forward to the new boxset! Will try me some of that Walkerswood. They sell the seasoning, marinade and sauce. Which do people use? I made 50 lbs of Jerk chicken wings for a ski club party once. Split the wings into roughly 10 lb bags - did one with 2 Habenero peppers, two with 5 Habenero peppers and two with 10 Habenero peppers. I preferred the 10 pepper wings. It was a lot of work to make - wore cloves but still had lost sensation in fingertips, but did not touch eyes or other parts that would really hurt :o

10oz jar of jerk seasoning hot and spicy will act as the perfect introduction. You can do mild, but the lack of scotch bonnet peppers will be missed. If you dig it, from there explore!We found a Bravo store close y with the full product list. Icecreamkid you are in for a lil bit of heaven with the shrimp. The only thing I've put it on so far that didn't truly rock was a burger. Not bad, but after chicken and shrimp, just not as orgasmic.

That's really great news. I hope I get mine soon and box like by the weekend!I didn't do the Daves script this year, thinking I'd do ala carte instead. But this box really set the hook, I ordered same day as the announcement. 5 shows will provide me a fix for most of the summer. I move slow with these releases, needing 6 or more spins to get the understanding of a show. Funds are low so I'm picking my cherries this year. Hope we all have um soon.

These Red Rocks shows are all-timers and we get all new Betty Boards! I absolutely CAN'T wait!! Beautiful artwork, essays and pics. Plus, the "Full Norman"? Yes, yes and YES! So excited that some of us will soon be holding this wonderful set in our hands and sitting down and pressing play. What a journey this will be. Absolutely nothing to dislike about this. :) Thanks to DL2/Pinkus and everyone at Rhino for pushing these projects into reality for us. overpriced?

a lot of dollars, yes, but it isn't like boxzilla or E72. I find vinyl overpriced. This box is a wet dream in my opinion. GD78 is fantastic, classic GD to me. Christmas in May. Shipping Notices??

Not great timing.. but like Dantian before me my CD's get delivered by horse and it seems to take a fortnight from their shipping barn in Va. I'm heading to Philly to stalk some mailboxes of some heads I know. I need this box set now! (kidding.. reminds me of that scene in Willy Wonka, Daddy, I want an Upmah Lumpah now. Got my shipping conf, also HDCD playback Question

Just got my shipping notice, still waiting for the delivery date to be updated. I feel like a child on Christmas Eve, really excited for this set. I skipped the Daves picks this year and am going to pick up 1 that is tbd. I have a question about HDCD and what people are using on here to listen to that higher res 20-bit format. I'm aware that the HDCD will play on a regular cd player via regular 16-bit playback, but I was wondering if anyone on here has a HDCD player, and where they got it? Or if people on here are using windows media player to play and hear the HDCD format (does WMP play out in 20-bit formats, thought they may since Microsoft owns the HDCD copyright now)? Any info and help on this would be greatly appreciated, thanks you.

There was lot of noise regarding this about a year or so ago. wjonjd and fourwinds did a lot of research on it (I think).. lots of back and forth on specs, what to play it on, what the impact is, etc. I think wjon burned from two different players to file and did some analysis on the resulting lossless digital files too, but could be wrong about this. In summary.. playing on a standard player does not seem to make a very noticeable difference in the sound quality. Keithfan had the best advice on buying a player, instead of rolling out big bucks for a new one, look on EBay. I got mine for something like $40 + shipping. I rarely use it..

No shipping notice. Passing the time with DP14 while I smoke some baby back ribs. One of those "no Donna" releases. That Eyes of the World from November 30, 1973 (disc 2) is bonkers. That is all. Edit: I've never heard a Brown-Eyed Women like that. DP14 has some amazing moments.

FedEx for a change

Rec'd my shipping notice and its with "FedEx SmartPost," a new one on me. The tracking # actually works and it indicates that FedEx got the "information" at 8:12am on Fri, May 6. Shipping notice from dead.net today, May 11. I'm outta here to the backcountry Mon, May 16, so I'm hoping to get my sweaty little paws on this baby by Sat. Or get the neighbors to keep an eye out. Come July it'll be 38 yrs since we fried our brains on the Rocks two days running for those July 7/8 shows. I still retain and experience little visual flashes of that stand on occasion. AND hitting the Rocks this year for Dylan, Tedeschi-Trucks (Los Lobos opening -- my two favorite live bands in one show) and Bonnie Raitt. My 42nd year at the Rocks. Oh, wait, shouldn't have defined myself as "old foot-in-the-grave hendrixfreak"... too late!!

Five Betty shows are en route....

....man, life sucks. I personally, have never had a release arrive a week later than when the first announcements started ringing. Never had a box cutter, missing disc, etc. Fresno has a small issue in Row Jimmy that even toothpaste can't fix. Can't explain why some heads get the slow boat to China. Some ship UPS ground, some USPS media mail, others FedEx air. Fucking weird business model. But, in the end, strap them on a sloth riding saddle on a slug. Just keep feeding me Seymore....

Fed-Ex - when you don't give a shit when it comes....

Lets see mine did something at crozet, va on the 6th. Six days later it made West Virginia, says in 6 more days will be here. Almost 2 weeks to go all of 1200 miles. That's worst than book rate at the post office.

I honestly don't understand it. Is it cheaper for dead.net than plain old US mail (media mail)? Because it is for damn certain slower.

But thanks for the vibe, JimInMD... It's kinda sparse pinon-juniper trees scattered across the savannah, but dense enough in places to give cover to the beasts. (Yes, including me and the four-leggers...) Today the tracker said that while "information" had been "delivered" to FedEx on May 6, an actual pkg left W. Virginia this morning. Yep, that'll arrive while I'm gone. Perhaps FedEx has the tracking thing down pat and that's its involvement? That might be an improvement over the "USPS" tracking, which has never worked for me. Had a flash last night to hold the RR shows til July 7/8 and do a back-to-back listen, but acknowledged to self that that's not realistic. Too eager to hear the tapes and compare new RR with old, boot RR. I'm thinking the quality difference will be tres noticeable.

Yay, Monday delivery

Got my shipping conf and it should be here on Monday. I haven't been this excited for a release in a while. The clarity on these recordings is incredible, the subtle effects on Jerry's rig really ring and I'm basing this off of a lossy streaming format, stoked here!! I also bit the bullet on several Europe 72 shows, some of the more popular ones, 4/8, 4/24, 4/26, 5/4, 5/11, and 5/26. Looks like most of them are back in stock, although it also looks like 4 or so have been permanently removed, like 5/3, 5/10, and 5/25.
