    David...
I was pleasantly surprised to hear you on CBC radio today. I listen to CBC at work because I can't stand listening to normal radio stations playing the same shallow music all the time. Imagine my glee when I got to hear UJB and Morning Dew. Its good to see you haven't forgotten your hozer roots David. Thank-you from Sudbury Ontario.

    SPAC
Dave, you must have SPAC on the brain because the date you list for Pittsburgh '88 is actually the SPAC '88 date. One of those Saratoga shows would make for a damn good pick. 2nd set of '88 is incredible.

Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from the second half of Brent’s time with the Grateful Dead.

Our first selection this week is the end of the show from SPAC on 6/27/85, featuring: Space > Truckin' > Spoonful > Black Peter > Turn On Your Lovelight, Baby Blue. This show was an interesting part of my tape collection back around 1986, as my collection mostly consisted of second sets (when not a complete show), but I only had a few only-first-sets in my collection, and this show’s opening half, along with 4/4/85 in Providence, were two such tapes. Both excellent first sets, but I was very happy when I finally obtained the second sets.

And speaking of first sets… next is the entire first from 6/28/88 in Pittsburgh, featuring Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo > Little Red Rooster ; When Push Comes To Shove; Mama Tried > Big River ; Cumberland Blues ; Gentlemen Start Your Engines ; Big Railroad Blues ; The Music Never Stopped. This was the first of only two live versions of Gentlemen Start Your Engines. I can only think of one other original Grateful Dead song that was played less, Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues, played on 3/27/86.

Lastly this week is the entire first set from 6/23/90 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR, the first night of a terrific two day run of shows that started at noon with Little Feat opening, the Dead playing around 2-5 PM, and we were back at our hotel by 5:30 PM: Feel Like A Stranger ; West L.A. Fadeaway ; Me And My Uncle > Cumberland Blues ; Far From Me ; They Love Each Other ; Cassidy ; Tennessee Jed > The Promised Land.

Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.

I wish the official releases were chosen from the shows frequently shared here on the Tapers Section. This is where most of the magic happens for my money.

wasn't there a second encore of Johnny B. Goode....?????Also, the first set includes some prime crowd-directed banter from the stage.

Johnny B. Goode, It's all Over Now Baby Blue were the two encores that night. Band Banter as I remember it: Management has kindly asked that you do not hang off the balcony And don't hang off the Balcony! You gotta understand that the first step is a doozy. Band starts yelling at people in the Balcony. Get back in your seat There's about 50,000 people waiting for you to get back into your seat. Hey Phil my dog has no nose. No nose how does he smell? Blooming Awful (laughter). Do you have any friends up there, we do not want you falling on somebody, do unto (muffled) - Jerry steps into Stagger and we are off to the races again. Officially 40,231 at SPAC, insane on the lawn, people up in the trees, naked dancers on the ramps to the mezzanine and just people everywhere. Twenty years so far back drop was dropped during the Midnight Hour opener or when they walked out on stage. A little fuzzy on that.

I just listened to the SPAC show last week. Having been there a bunch of times, I will say it's a long drop from the balcony to the floor.

For some reason, the Baby Blue is really, really good. The solo is outstanding - the mix is killer. Super dynamic and heartfelt - check out the "Forget about the dead you left" line. Also dig the crowd clapping along to the final vocal reprise. Lovin' Bobby's guitar sound here. An unusual tone he has for this and the Hershey show next night - probably my favorite 85 show... He sounds drunk as well - both nights!

never did recover. . . thank God. Jerry with short cropped glowing silver hair and the Rosebud - just radiated power and majesty. They were so on. Still remember my friend chewed his new Steal Your Face sticker to little pieces up in the bleachers. Some kind of experience...whew.
