Welcome back to the Tapers’ Section, where this week we have music from the second half of Brent’s time with the Grateful Dead.
Our first selection this week is the end of the show from SPAC on 6/27/85, featuring: Space > Truckin' > Spoonful > Black Peter > Turn On Your Lovelight, Baby Blue. This show was an interesting part of my tape collection back around 1986, as my collection mostly consisted of second sets (when not a complete show), but I only had a few only-first-sets in my collection, and this show’s opening half, along with 4/4/85 in Providence, were two such tapes. Both excellent first sets, but I was very happy when I finally obtained the second sets.
And speaking of first sets… next is the entire first from 6/28/88 in Pittsburgh, featuring Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo > Little Red Rooster ; When Push Comes To Shove; Mama Tried > Big River ; Cumberland Blues ; Gentlemen Start Your Engines ; Big Railroad Blues ; The Music Never Stopped. This was the first of only two live versions of Gentlemen Start Your Engines. I can only think of one other original Grateful Dead song that was played less, Revolutionary Hamstrung Blues, played on 3/27/86.
Lastly this week is the entire first set from 6/23/90 at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, OR, the first night of a terrific two day run of shows that started at noon with Little Feat opening, the Dead playing around 2-5 PM, and we were back at our hotel by 5:30 PM: Feel Like A Stranger ; West L.A. Fadeaway ; Me And My Uncle > Cumberland Blues ; Far From Me ; They Love Each Other ; Cassidy ; Tennessee Jed > The Promised Land.
Be sure to join us here next week for more music from the vault.
