First of all, what a great thing this vine is!!!!!!!! Everyone should take a step back, now take another step back the people up front are getting squashed. Any lossless vine should be from an original source (ie. original sbd tape or aud recording.) The original recording is a WAV file that is converted to a lossless compression format for the sole purpose of reducing storage space. A lossless compression format (ie flac/shn) reduces the size of a file by approximately 40 to 50 percent without losing any of the original file's information, that is why the format is called lossless. where as a lossy compression format (ie .mp3,.aac,.wma) reduces the file size by approximatley 60 to 90 percent (depending on the bit rate of the compressed file) but the information removed from the original file is lost forever that is why these formats are refered to as lossy. Lossy formats were created for the puropse of being able to have more music in a smaller package. That is why you can get a cd player for your home or car that will play .mp3's .wma's and the like. That is why you can fit several shows on one cd in .mp3 format. Also these lossy formats are the reason I have 32 days of Good Ol Grateful Dead on my Ipod. Apple uses their own lossy compression for the ipod and to be quite honest they sound great. I commute along way , and in my car is where most of my music listening happens. I have a very high end sound system in my car and my Ipod plugs directly into my head unit so I don't have to fumble with thousands of cd's. IMHO you would be hard pressed to sit in my car and hear a phil bomb at 120db and be able to tell if it was a compressed format or not. Lossless compression was developed by audiophiles and was intended to be used for reducing the storage space necessary for storing digital music on a computer while maintaining the integrity of the original file. If you will notice, there are no players aside from a plugin or two for a computer audio player that will play shn or flac files. This is because the formats were developed for archival purposes. I myself copy the flac or shn files to my external hard drive where they stay forever, decompress the files to WAV without deleting the flac or shn, I then import the WAV files into Itunes and compress them into aac file and put them on my Ipod. I then delete the WAV files because they are the largest files which take up the most space and everything is great in my world. I have the music on my Ipod to take with me everywhere I go and I have the lossless file archived on my hard drive. Some people decompress the lossless files and burn the resulting WAV files to cd's or convert them to mp3's to make mp3 cd's or put on a portable mp3 player, it is your choice how you consume the product once you recieve it. Whatever tickles your spot. If you really want to get down to the nitty gritty of the sound quality issue, we should come up with a way to vine on vinyl because the original analog recording on good vinyl with the right record player would put this digital stuff to shame, but it would be impossible to vine this way. I think we should all need to educate ourselves so that we can take advantae of the technology we have (alot of which is free I might add) right at our fingertips for it is this technology that makes this vine possible. I mean really ,all of us remember trading tapes right?? Try to find the ying for your yang!! This beats tape trading hands down and here we have people almost getting hostile over some technology misunderstandings. As for the copy of a copy of a copy of a cd we are dealing with digital format, and I can rip (copy) the WAV files off of a cd and then burn them to a cd again and agian and again with the same results. There are differences in computer software and hardware as well as differences in storage media (cd's dvd's) If you usae a program called Exact Audio Copy (EAC) which is free on the internet and a good burning software like Nero, and you have a good name brand burning drive with quality blank cd's, cd's can be copied with no loss of qualtiy. You are taking an exact copy of the digital information on the cd, and writing the exact same digital information to a new cd. As for the volume differences, most burning software has volume adjustment settings or something called normalize volume for all tracks or something of that nature that if you don't understand how to use this feature or don't know it's being used can have adverse affects on the sound quality of your copies. Again I'm not trying to be condescending in any manner, just informative, but a thorough understanding of the technology and all of the aspects surrounding it will solve the discussions I'm seing on this thread. It's all about education, which is free on the internat reguarding all of the programs (software) formats (flac,shn,.mp3 etc..) and computer hardware. I'm just an old hippy who misses the Grateful Dead and has been taking advantage of this technology for the better part of ten years now!! When I found out I could download high quality recordings of my favorite music, I couldn't learn fast enough!!!! I by no means know it all, but I do have quite a bit of experience with all of these formats and technology. I hope this is helpful in the grand scheme of life, because I know how it is to be jonesing for Jerry licks and god forbid they be sub par sound quality when you get them!!! If I can be of any help to anyone I'm more than willing to help! All that being said, I will say again that no vine listed as losless should be sourced from a lossy file, period! Don't sweat the small stuff, and by the way It's ALL small stuff!!!

Small vines, large vines, wav, flac I like them all and they all have advantages and disadvantages. I'm trying to obtain as many shows as possible and with how long it takes to get vines I think it is nice to get one large one rather than waiting for 2 or 3 smaller ones - you can knock out the entire year of 1977 in what 4 vines?? That's awesome! In addition, along those same lines I prefer flac its just faster and easier all around (especially for large vines, they have to be in flac to even be manageable, plus it is cheaper, I can go on and on). But hey it is also cool opening up a vine with one special show in wav format. I like all the vines and vine formats, keep them coming! "I've stayed in every blue-light cheap hotel. If anyone knows how time-consuming and overwelming big vines could be, I do. If I had to do it all over again, maybe I would break them down even further or space them further out. Hindsight. The positives of big vines are less cost (4 DVDs at a time v 4 shipments of 1 DVD each), especially for our European-based brethren, and speedier acquisition of a whole hunk of music. But the sheer enormity can be overwelming and take away the gleeful feeling we should get upon receiving a vine. While big vines are more efficient, perhaps they are like Wal Mart, giving us what we want but leaving us with an empty feeling. As for the whole source controversy, I think we all agree that the seeder should provide all the information he or she has (WAV, Lossless) and avoid MP3. Just like with the official releases and life in general, variety is a good thing. We can pick and choose what we want. Just because I generally eschew officially released compilations (I prepurchased the new Pure Jerry though) and am now firmly planted on the lossless side here, doesn't mean that Rhino or my fellow viners should solely cater to my taste. This is the best community on the net as far as I am concerned and I am proud to be a part of it. In the end, the love we make...

I certainly missed Erickat. Maybe I am old-fashioned, but I convert whatever music I get in the vineyard to Wav for cds for my car, and I also convert it for use on my ipod. I do back up everything that comes to me in flac form on my external hard drive, but I almost never listen through my computer. So I guess I appreciate both formats. What I do not appreciate is people telling other people what or how they should vine. If someone prefers wav cds, cool for them. They do not need to be told to enter this century. If I want to convert a flac vine to wav bc I was asked to do so by people, that is my perogative. If that makes me old-fashioned, so be it. I think we all know that a very wise man said once a note leaves his guitar it is no longer his and people are free to do whatever they like with the music. The same should be true with vines. Once it is out there it is not really proprietary to the viner, it belongs to the vineyard. As to the mega-vines, I believe Dstache's efforts were heroic and I was happy to contribute to the 77 vine. However, my personal preference is for smaller, theme-based vines that surprise me with their creativity and the occassional show that I have been pining for. On the other hand, there are others who prefer to get it all at once. Indeed, a wise lady has said that there is room in the vineyard for all types of vines. So, in conclusion Erickat, you are greatly appreciated. Derek, you are greatly appreciated. In fact, everybody that contributes to and participates in the Vineyard is greatly appreciated. Lets not lose sight of how amazing it is that we can hear our favorite music long after it was created. Peace to everybody! "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The 68 lossless vine has been posted, as has the final part of the 1973 lossless vine (which I forgot about in my last post). That leaves only the remainder of the 1977 lossless vine outstanding from me. I will probably wait a week or two before working on this as I need a little break and have some other commitments. Oh Yeah and/or other MAC users, get back to me about changing my burning speed or whatever the problem is and I will change it before burning the final parts to the 1977 vine.

In my opinion I have not heard such a remarkable difference between 24 and 16 that I want to go through all that trouble. I just want to simply pop a CD into my boombox, actually mainly into the car stereo. Has anyone tried converting to MP3 for iPod use? Just wondering, suppose I could give it a try.. Wait a second, I'm on vine hiatus, what am I doing?!?!?! BTW, listening to Led Zeppelin 2/12/75 right now, an amazing MTX, excellent show. Man, the No Quarters from this tour are amazing. And the 34 min Dazed & Confused was not none too shabby either.

A couple of fellow vinners and I have been messing around with sending each other tape friendly music through torrents. We were looking for a cheaper alternative than trading DVD's with each other. So far we have just been e-mailing each other links, which works but I would like to try some other experiments. Anyone interested PM me and I will elaborate more.

The JGB 1981 vine still just blows me away. Not one hit. Anyways the community has dwindled down to just a handful of us. I hope it is not because the trend has kind of gotten away from one show on wav format to multi shows on flac? In my mind it takes as long to rip one wav format show as it does to copy multiple shows in flac format. I am a completeist though - I want it all so I'm guessing that's not how everyone else thinks. Stuman - what other trading sites are out there becasue I like doing this but it has been way too slow here. Besides I am signed up for like 15 vines and at least 8 or 9 of them are officially dead, that's another annoying aspect of this site. Plus no one seems willing to re-seed and it feels like this community has dissolved. It's too bad because I love it here, and I am with you stuman I have a ton of stuff I was getting ready to vine but am putting it on hold, it's not worth burning all those dvd's just to have the vine die after 2 people. I know Lopezz, stuman and raymond have been doing the torrent sharing. I'd be really interested in joining that community although most of what I have you all probably already have - but I am sure not everything!! Please let me know if there are other ways we can trade?? I am still here and willing!! "Here's my half a dollar if you dare .. double twist when you hit the air. Well I use , shn/flac.net or commonly known as losslesslegs they have a vine systme that seems to move a little faster and folks are more willing to re-seed dead vines. .The Traders Den also has a vine systme but I have not used it yet . Also Deadhook has a vine systme but you need to be a member for like a month and you must post X amount of times in the other forums before you can use the vineyard . Workingmans tracker has vines but again I have not used that systme it looks like it moves even slower then Dead.net . And I think Yahoo has a music trading community but I hav`nt seen it probobley because I hav`nt looked for it but I think Ursa Minor uses it . Oh and your JGB 81 vine looks like carolina boy singed up for it and I will take it next as I am also a completest like you . *** Clean***Sober***Proud***

I also vine at deadhook and philzone. We are FAR more active here though. I got a bunch of stuff from philzone that I have turned around here. I don't know if it has been less active here lately because of the big vines we have done. I do know that we have vined over 1/3 of the catalogue, including most of 68, all of the first half of 69, most of 70, most of 71, most of 72, all of 73, most of 74, all of 77, and a good chunk of 79. In other words, the best years have been vined, at least in this viner's opinion. '82 is a good year, I like Fall '83 a lot, and '89 and '90 are really good, but for the remaining years it can really be hit or miss. I think it would be good for someone to do for the other years what I did for '79 and make some "best of xxxx" vines. Someone who has almost everything from '87 say, could do 3 vines of 4 shows each (on both SHN/FLAC and WAV) of what they deem the best 12 shows from the year. Actually, I'm not sure there are 12 shows from '87 that deserve to be called the best (haha, boo, hiss!). That being said, once I catch up in a month or 2, I'll be back and signing up for Hippy's '90's vines and for that big 81 JGB.

If you guys want a project to work on...I certainly would not complain if you found, downloaded and vined the following: From '90: 2/26, 2/27, 3/14, 5/5, 6/9, 6/10, 6/24, 7/4, 7/8, 7/10 and 7/14 (7/8 might be from the Download Series, can't find it on the site here though) From '89: 7/2, 7/9, 7/10, 7/12, 7/13, 7/15 and 10/18. I have the rest of 89 pretty much from June onward, and could vine some of that (thanks RMB!) if folks want. 10/25 and 10/26 especially are noteworthy, as are the July Alpine Valley shows (though one or more of them may have been vined already, I seem to recall a video at the very least). Thanks downloaders, other seeders and regular old viners for what you do!

I acquired the run a little while back and am finally getting around to listening to it. I've listened to the first 2 nights, quality shows and sound. Here is a link if you want to sample the first night: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1991-09-20.fob.oneil.brennecke-young.g… And here is a note re: the sources: "The James Young & Clay Brennecke FOB Vault - a GEMS Production May 2008 ... we are in progress with The James Young and Clay Brennecke FOB Vault Transfer Project. We have all the Master DATs and are hard at work transferring, editing and soon to be releasing the shows Clay & James recorded from 1991 through 1994. James and Clay began recording with B&K 4011 microphones and a Sony Pro DAT in the Spring of 1991. Summer 1991 mainly saw recordings from the Front Row Dead Center of the Official Taper Section (OTS). June 28, 1991 was their first FOB Recording. And starting with Fall 1991, all of their recordings were All FOB All The Time! Early they recorded with the B&K 4011 Cardiod Mics in the ORTF pattern into a Modified Sony Pro DAT Deck. In 1993, James traded in the B&K's for the AMS ST-250 Soundfield Mic and recorded in the Blumlein pattern into the modified Sony Pro DAT Deck. We are starting at the beginning and working our way to the end of this vault. Spring 1991 through 1994. We have added artwork for CD's and included an m3u playlist for import into your choice of PC/MAC media player ... and if your player supports FLAC, all you have to do is place the folder where you plan to store the files and import the playlist - tracks, tagged and with art are ready for you. We hope you enjoy their body of recording work. ------- Todd & Jamie - Project GEMS." If people are interested, I will vine the run. Because it is 6 shows, I would prefer to make it SHN/FLAC only.

Here is a copy of a post from Ltapilot from Dec that I used to create a list of shows from my hard drives..... Its great to get things organized.... I am using the excel example.... Hope it works for you! Raymond On December 30th, 2009 Ltapilot said: You can build a list of the contents of a drive in a few short key strokes. 1. Open a command prompt (CMD) 2. change to the drive you want to list C:\Users\Rick>g; 3. Type in dir /b /s /a:d >show.txt (you may call it what ever you wish) This will create a text file in the G drive called show.txt if you would like an Excel file use the .xls extension. More in-depth explanations found here www.computerhope.com/dirhlp.htm Here is an example of the code I use - C:\Users\Rick>g: G:\>dir /b /s /a:d >show.txt G:\> Happy New Year Everyone, Peace Rick

I live in Canada and want to join some vines. Just wondering if it's cool for me to do so.

Of course! We'd love to have you. Check out "New Decade, New Vines Topic" (if you haven't already) to get started. "Here's my half a dollar if you dare .. double twist when you hit the air. Look at Julie down below .. the levee doing the dopaso"

Is there anyone here who has the '86 Garcia/Kahn acoustic shows? I'd love to hear those. Would someone be interested in vining those? I hope so as I have nothing to trade.

Any interest in another Pink Floyd vine? SHN/FLAC or WAV or both? I've got a great AUD from The Wall tour, as well as a good AUD from the Animals tour. I'm hoping to acquire a couple more shows within the next couple of weeks.

http://gdluckynumbers.org/ I never knew about this site.... but its AWESOME! Bill Tetzeli has rated many of the GD AUD's available on the LMA for FREE downloads without bit torrent software.... If you are using Firefox you can DL from LMA all at once with an add on called DownThemALL (or something like that) ... but as an Internet Explorer user I can only DL one flac file at a time.... but nonetheless I have acquired some real nice AUD's this way. Nice to have them rated and linked from this site! Check it out! Raymond

It's a go then on the Pink Floyd vine. I'm waiting for a possible trade to make it at least 4 PF shows in the vine. So far I have a Wall tour AUD that sounds great and an Animals tour AUD that isn't nearly as nice sounding but is still quite listenable. This vine will be offered in both SHN/FLAC and WAV. I've also got a "mostly classic rock" vine in the works. 1 show from Rush (excellent sounding 78 SBD), 1 show from Yes (84, haven't listened yet), Queen (84, haven't listened yet) and [here's why it is MOSTLY classic rock] the Clash (82, very good AUD). I'm looking for another show or 2 to fill out the DVD and want to listen to everything first to make sure the sound/shows are up to snuff. This will just be SHN/FLAC. And finally, I'll post a "best of spring 89" vine in a couple of weeks, once I finish going through the tour, given to me by the always generous RMB.

That was the Dead's final show from that run at the Radio City Music Hall and it was also shown on closed ciruit TV for the East Coast audience (according to DeadBase). This was a 3 set show; first the acoustic set (with the only Sage and Spirit ever played) then 2 electric sets followed. It is on 4 DVDs which contain of the complete show along with the Franken & Davis comedy duo and their routines during the break (even dragging some of the Dead and the crew into the skits). All proshot or shot for the TV audience but this is only hampered by whatever transfer to get it our on DVD (VHS > ? > DVD). Anyway, if there is interest then I will get Mac to burn copies to vine. I really believe that they should pull a crisp copy of this one out of the Vault to release with remastered sound for all those who are calling for some 80's DVDs. Al Franken is loaded, and so is Brent. He can hardly speak when they are interviewing him. It's a classic!

Not sure, but I seem to recall this was commercially released. I remember this show and saw it in a movie theatre in Albany after seeing three RCMH shows live. I remember afterwards that I was dissapointed. Kinda funny in hindsight as to how spoiled I was at the time. "That path is for, your steps alone."

The info that comes with the show Oroboros is talking about says they are cuts that didn't make the movie. And possibly from other nights. I don't know if thats true or not, I know there is 4 dvd's worth of film which has to be more than one night. I got a copy from Working Mans Torrent which is usually good about not posting released material. Of course I have some Beatles bootlegs that made it on to store shelves for a couple weeks before anyone realized.

but someone back East made a copy of the TV proshot from that 10-31-80 show. It is 4 DVD's due to one of the DVDs being a series of comedy skits that were shot for the 'break'. Really the music is about 2 1/2 to 3 DVDs of the Dead playing, the rest is Franken & Davis spoofing on the Dead (Jerry's Kids!), the skit Lopezz was talking about, then they drag Parrish into a skit, then Billy, then some political spoof, and then some more, I can't recall it all. I can see how it may have been a disappointment with all the extra comedy, and espcially if you weren't seeing the Dead live. Just on the screen. But.... But the music is from that single night, start to finish. The Dead Ahead is a compilation with special effects/visuals, and crystal clear video. This is good but not crystal. Deadbase lists this show as most desirable for 1980 with 64 votes (Lewiston 9-6-80 is second with 39 votes, boy wouldn't Lewiston be wonderful show to have on video!). The Deadhead's Taping Compendium rates it as a tape from 80 to get as well. Anyway, whatever marye says we will go with. Just trying to spread it around, you know. The Truth is realized in an instant, the act is practiced step by step.
