DAVE’S PICKS VOL.3 FEATURES SHOWS FROM KEITH’S FIRST TOUR!

This product is officially SOLD OUT. Stay tuned for news on Dave's Picks Volume 4.

In all the years that archival Grateful Dead recordings have been coming out, there have been just three from the red-hot fall of 1971, Keith Godchaux’s landmark first tour with the band. Those would be Dick’s Picks Vol. 2, a rippin’ single-disc release of the second set of the group’s Halloween show at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus, Download Series Vol. 3 from the 10/26 Rochester show and Road Trips Vol. 3 No. 2 from November 15, 1971 in Austin, Texas. Now there is a fourth: Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 features the complete October 22, 1971 concert from the beautiful Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on two discs, with a third disc culled from the previous night’s scorcher at the same venue.

Keith came into the band in mid-September ’71, at a time when Pigpen was desperately ill and the band was hungering for something new to help fill out their sound. A sparkling pianist, Keith was a complete unknown at the time, yet, miraculously it seemed, fit in with the Dead immediately. The live “Skull & Roses” double-album (recorded in the winter-spring of ’71) had just come out, and the band was still enjoying a surge of unprecedented popularity since Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty were released the previous year. They were on a roll!

Never ones to rest on their laurels, however, the band continued their torrid pace of introducing new songs: “Sugaree” and “Brown-Eyed Women” first appeared in the summer of ’71, and that fall, when the band with Keith hit the road, starting out in Minneapolis (10/19) and then moving on to Chicago (10/21-22), they had a whole bunch of other freshly minted tunes waiting to be born—“Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Ramble On Rose,” “Comes A Time” and “One More Saturday Night,” all of which appear on this set.

The sparkle and verve that Keith brought to the band is immediately apparent, as he tears through rockers and bouncy mid-tempo numbers with the confidence of someone who had been playing this music forever. If the quiet keyboardist was nervous or unsure of himself on this first jaunt, it certainly wasn’t apparent. And you can feel the electricity in the rest of the band, as Jerry, Phil, Bob and Bill absorb and play off of the amazingly inventive musings of their new recruit. Of course Pigpen’s absence was deeply felt (and the band acknowledged it at every stop), but Keith’s entrance was so seamless and the energy he injected into the music so impressive, the group didn’t appear to lose any of the momentum they had been building tour after tour.

The songs are a blend of old, still-recent (from Workingman’s Dead on) and brand-new. One forgets that crowd-pleasers such as “Bertha,” “Deal” and “Playing in the Band” had come into the repertoire only eight months earlier, and “Truckin’” and “Sugar Magnolia” were just over a year old. Even a bunch of the cover tunes were relatively recent additions—“Big Railroad Blues,” “Me & Bobby McGee” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Keith handles all of those (and earlier chestnuts like “Cold Rain and Snow” and “Beat It On Down the Line”) with his characteristic aplomb, but perhaps most impressive is how he fares on the Dead’s big jamming numbers. On Disc Two, you’ll hear his thoughtful and inventive contributions to a truly stellar, 29-minute version of “That’s It for the Other One.” And on Disc Three (from 10/21), listen to him as he navigates through a spectacular “Dark Star,” which is split by a spirited romp through “Sitting on Top of the World.” The encore of 10/21 also features the first of only three “old school” (pre-hiatus) versions of “St. Stephen” Keith played on.

Most of the 12,000 limited edition copies of Dave’s Picks Vol. 3 are already spoken for by subscribers to the series, but there are a still a few thousand available through Dead.net only. These will definitely sell out—and fast—so if you want make sure you get your copy, order today! As always, the 3-CD set has been lovingly mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman from the original vault reels, and the eco-friendly Digipak includes a booklet with an essay about the show and, in this case, some very cool photos of the interior of Chicago’s historic Auditorium Theatre. My original copy had been lost in the mail initially, but did eventually arrive nearly a month after it was originally shipped. I had contacted Dr Rhino about mine being lost in the mail, and I sent him an additional email when my package arrived finally. When I looked in my mailbox today, I saw the familiar package and thought that it was Dave's Picks Vol 4 as an extra early arrival. To my surprise, it was a replacement copy of Vol. 3. At this point, the Dead.net crew, Dr Rhino and Mary E have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help out in every way and and thank you all! The bonus bandana is cool too.

All postal services in the EU have suffered - all have to be broken up and privatised under EU rules, "to improve competition" (actually, to stuff public money into private hands). Anyway. my DP3 is now a month overdue, and I am being told I have to wait another week before I can inquire about where it is. Boring.

not sure why these post offices have to be privatised. fact is they dont have to be privatised. they are for the universal good. privatisation of this service is bad for the average person and shipping costs will go up significantly. it shouldnt happen.

When viewed using Safari, i.e. iPhone, is not just exactly perfect. There's a couple bugs that will hopefully be worked out. For instance, the comments are displayed in a very narrow column, as compared to the width of the page. The display of the home page is kind of scrambled. Difficult to describe, though it's easy to see when looked at on this particular mobile browser. Thanks

My only question is how is this going to work with the numbering on the back of the album cover. Will it still be numbered out of 12,000? If it is, how will you know which numbers have actually been lost in the mail? I paid for a limited edition copy and expect to get a limited edition copy. But i have no clue how this will work now that you have no idea which numbers were lost in the mail. Does anyone have an explanation?

Received shipping notice of July 30th & nothing yet in Hawaii. It does take longer to get here normally but I received my Spring 90 Box on Monday. After waiting patiently, ha, & reading posts of non delivery I emailed dead.net & got a case #, then emailed dr. rhino. Haven't heard back from dead.net & never a response from dr. rhino. I am definitely lucky to have a band I love still releasing music but this mail order is a joke. I swear my wife has ordered & received a half a dozen different orders from the mainland since my supposed shipment of July 30th. Come on Man!!!

I'm still waiting here in the UK for dave's picks 3 on subscription. I've sent emails but received nothing but emails telling meI would receive a response, but that's it.I've now made 3 calls to customer help, and on the second call 10 days ago I was give a case number. Today I was told again that the shipment was being investigated, and that if, after 21 business days from my case date (so that takes me to Sept 18!) it still hadn't been located, it would be considered lost ! I would then be sent a replacement from a reprint, which would be sent out mid-October ! So maybe I will receive it end of October after around 3 months ! Maybe I'll still be also waiting for my copy of spring 1990, and be preparing to wait for DAP4 by then. I have purchased every release by the Dead over the years, and will continue to do so ..... All I ask in return is that I actually get to hear them ! Why can they not take an interest, and use a reliable shipper like they used to do.

All good things in all good time...Arrived today on my little island in Canada . Mailed first class aug 20th similar to the fellow in Toronto who got his recently. I never did inquire about it with rhino so they must have realized something happened with the international orders and reshipped them. Was pleasantly surprised to find Dave's picks vol 4 enclosed too...so dec 94 will get a revisit too. Peace.

I think I paid for every Dick's Pick and Road Trip series from the beginning until the end. I missed out on Europe 72, but that's where the problem seemed to start. I'm still waiting for a response about Dave's Pick 3 and the 1990 Box Set should have been in my mail by now according to the response from customer service. I'm hoping things work out, but I won't be ordering in the future if this issue is not resolved. I can't afford to chase bad money with good. I still hope to attend some live events as time allows, but may have to rely on my memory of events, instead of a disc. Craig Parman

I'm still waiting for my Daves Picks 3 (and Spring 1990 box!) here in the UK despite being told DaP3 was shipped on July 30. I'm now starting to get very concerned about both sets after having spent a vast sum of money plus shipping to maintain my GD collection. Could someone please help me and tell me who I need to contact to get a real updateI have emailed deadnet@custhelp.com who have given me a case number and advised me in their 1st email that my case "has been escalated for further info" and more recently informed me that they are "still working on my case". Do I need to email Dr Rhino as well as I've read on posts here that they are sending out replacement sets? Going crazy here wondering if I'm going to miss out on these releases!!

Despite numerous mailings to customer service and Dr. Rhino, I am still not being told what lots of other Euro deadheads who also bought Dave's Picks 3 have been told - that a shipment went missing and more will have to be made and that we won't get them until October. Why not put an announcement up on this on dead.net? Then anyone can find it out without getting confusing and contradictory emails (as I have had -- wait another week (already a month late), email Dr. Rhino (I did. He can't be bothered to reply) which only serve to piss your customers off. I only found out by chance what had happened - which is not what it states at the start of the article above. I gather a shipment to Europe was "lost" by UPS, that more will have to be made, and that we will not get them until October. Some European customers have been told this, other, such as myself, ignored. Over the years I have probably spent a good $3000 on dead net - so I don't take to well to being fobbed off and treated - so it seems - as a nuisance. I've paid my money. I want my goods. Tell me - tell us all - in clear terms - what is happening? Please?

There seems to be a lot of worried people sending in emails from the UK and beyond. Remembering the fun and games we all had with the Europe 72 box I can understand this. However, I think we can all hold back on the panicking for the moment. No-one in the UK or Europe has received a DP3 sent by post so I quess we are all in line for a replacement set come October (or more likely November.) A number of people have received DP3s sent out with an August 20 date on the packet - if any non-US/Canada orders are in with this lot then they will arrive next week or the week after. If the various eurohead forums start reporting arrivals then I will post a note here, ditto if mine turns up! As regards the Spring 90 box, the despatch emails were only sent out last Friday so I wouldn't expect the boxes to arrive here in the UK until early or even mid September. The note sent to me said to allow a reasonable (8-12 working days) amount of time before contacting them about non-delivery. I would give it until 10 September at least. Again if anything starts happening over here I'll post notes here and on the Spring 90 board.

Looking through the posts here, I can only find one post from a European customer (Christian in France) who has stated that DP3 has arrived. As that post was a long time ago, I can only assume that he opted for UPS shipping instead of USPS (though I cannot remember what international shipping options were available when I got my subscription some 10 months ago) or he ordered an individual copy. Either way, it would seem that the entire batch - with that one exception - that should have been sent to European customers has gone astray. I also noted that a number of US customers who have recently received copies have stated that the packages were postmarked August 20. If a bunch were also found and sent to Europe on that date, they should arrive sometime next week. If nothing turns up in my letterbox next week then I will have to assume that I will never see my original order and will have to wait for the October replacement copy. Only time will tell, but my optimism is not endless.

I got my copy of Dave's Picks Volume 3 today (in Los Angeles). First let me say I don't really care about it being delayed by a few weeks, I'm just happy to get it and am glad they eventually sorted this whole thing out. There have been a lot of comparisons between the shipping of the Spring 90 box and Dave's Picks Volume 3, but there are at least two important differences between them that I think are important to remember. First there is the simple matter of size. The Spring 90 box is a lot bigger than Dave's Picks Volume 3. I think that the bureaucracy for larger and heavier packages is different, and there are a lot fewer large packages that the post office has to look after. So, given the woefully underfunded nature of the United States Postal Service if they are going to loose track of something, then it makes sense that it would be something smaller in size. Secondly, they shipped from different locations. My copy of Dave's Picks Volume 3 shipped from Redwood City in northern California, while my Spring 90 box shipped from Shepherdsville, Kentucky. So whoever was responsible or shipping out the Spring 90 Box was different than whoever was behind the Dave's Picks kerfuffle.

As can be seen from my two earlier posts I live in the UK. Following my PM to Mary I have now heard from Dr Rhino and I am now down for an October shipping. All well and good. I am relatively new to the Grateful Dead "experience", and having missed out on ALL the previous road sets, I thought I 'd collect these. Volume 1 I bought on eBay (!), and Volume 2 I purchased from here. I was thinking of buying the 2013 subscription, but now I am not so sure. It has to be said that my experience of this purchase has not been a happy one. The complete lack of communication has been a source of frustration, the inept emails from "UFC Store Customer Care", the failure to post the international orders (at least) with tracking codes, and Dr Rhino's failure to respond to questions, all give me the impression of chaos. Looking back at comments made on previous mail outs - E72 for example, clearly tells me that this is an issue that has occurred before and yet no lessons appear to have been learnt. Call me naive, but I thought the whole purpose of this website was to promote the Grateful Dead and their amazing music. All that this has done has pissed people like me off and wonder whether it is worth my while supporting them through this website. I cannot begin to wonder what those closest to the band make of all this. And before anyone asks my Spring 90 box set hasn't turned up yet either! Over and out.

The only info I have received was the vague response regarding the October reprint, but that was in a phone call nearly a week ago.

Mr. Outpost, don't give up. Send another email to dead.net customer services AND Dr. Rhino with your details and using this forum copy in Marye telling her what you have done and explaining your concerns over the lack of formal response. I've had emails from both dead.net and Rhino confirming that they have logged the problem and put me down for a replacement set in October. Mind you it's the weekend so don't expect any response until Monday afternoon UK time. I still think that some orders might turn up this week. Then again I thought that Spurs would have hung on for the win against Norwich!

Actually a Sat delivery for something ordered on Wednesday is pretty good - they must have gone out and posted it straight away. From what I understand of the US postal system the speed of service both for internal deliveries and airmail depends a lot on where you are and the luck of the draw as regards pickups and, if you are a contract customer what sort of arrangements you have in place. However, I suspect the problem here does lie with the despatch operation rather than USPS and, for that matter, the post at the UK end. I think the best way forward is to send email after email until you get a response. You could then contact your credit card company as a last resort to challenge the payment on the basis of non-delivery and use the evidence of non-response from the company to back your case up. But let's hope it doesn't come to this for any of us. Such an action would result in a temporary holding-back of income to the relevant companies by the bank supplying credit card payment services to them which would hit cash flow and cause problems to setups which are probably working to tight margins hence the problems in running an efficient customer service operation. However I remain optimistic about these problems resolving themselves sooner rather than later. Things will be a bit clearer when the S90s start arriving in Europe.

Got my CDs today, September 1. The box is marked as mailed from San jose and the internal packing slip indicates shipping from Redwood City, CA. I wonder if it really entered the mail stream on July 30. It only had to travel a few hundred miles to get to me. But it's here now! I can relax and enjoy. Thanks Marye for the encouragement and assistance.

Finally received my copy today (#1076) in central IL. The package was mailed first class with no date whatsoever and no tracking number. I didn't pay for first class shipping and it's highly unlikely that USPS would misplace hundreds of first class parcels coming from the same sender. Since dead.net is not telling us what happened we can only speculate but I think most of us can connect the dots. This situation has been really frustrating. I can live with my CD coming a month late (it's not like I don't have anything else to listen to), it's the lack of communication that's maddening. Dead.net/Rhino provides unique products that many of us want very much to buy, but please, can't someone convince them to provide adequate customer service?
